Current models of chemical evolution during star and planetary formation rely on the presence of dust grains to act as a third body. However, they generally ignore the reactivity of the dust grains themselves. Dust grains present in the protoplanetary phase will evolve as the Solar system forms and, after protoplanets have appeared, they will be constantly delivered to their surfaces in the form of large aggregates or meteorites. Chondritic meteorites are mostly unaltered samples of the dust present in the first stages of the Solar system formation, which still arrive nowadays to the surface of Earth and allow us to study the properties of the materials forming the early Solar system. These materials contain, amongst others, transition metals that can potentially act as catalysts, as well as other phases that can potentially react in different astrophysical conditions, such as FeS. In this work, we present the reactivity of chondritic meteorites under H |$_{2}$| -rich atmospheres, particularly towards the reduction of FeS for the formation of H |$_{2}$| S and metallic Fe during the early phases of the planetary formation. We present the obtained results on the reaction rates and the percentage of FeS available to react in the materials. Additionally, we include a computational study of the reaction mechanism and the energetics. Finally, we discuss the implications of an early formation of H |$_{2}$| S in planetary surfaces. This work constitutes a new trial to enhance the properties of palladium supported on alumina modified with zirconium used as catalysts for methane combustion. The effect of the support drying mode is studied. For this aim, Al2O3-ZrO2 binary oxides with zirconium loading of 2 and 5% in weight were prepared using sol–gel process then dried under ordinary or supercritical conditions. Palladium with a loading of 0.5% was deposited on the support by wet impregnation. Several techniques have been used to investigate differences between the two types of the derived catalysts. High-index dielectric nanoantennas, which provide an interplay between electric and magnetic modes, have been widely used as building blocks for a variety of devices and metasurfaces, both in linear and nonlinear regimes. Here, we investigate hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoantennas, consisting of a multimode silicon nanopillar core coated with a gold layer, that offer an enhanced degree of control over the mode selection and confinement, and emission of light on the nanoscale exploiting high-order electric and magnetic resonances. Cathodoluminescence spectra revealed a multitude of resonant modes supported by the nanoantennas due to hybridization of the Mie resonances of the core and the plasmonic resonances of the shell. Eigenmode analysis revealed the modes that exhibit enhanced field localization at the gold interface, together with high confinement within the nanopillar volume. Consequently, this architecture provides a flexible means of engineering nanoscale components with tailored optical modes and field confinement for a plethora of applications, including sensing, hot-electron photodetection and nanophotonics with cylindrical vector beams.

The electrochemical glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) presents an opportunity to produce hydrogen and high-value chemical products. Herein, we investigate the effect of Sn in Ni nanoparticles for the GOR to formic acid (FA). Electrochemical results show that the maximum activity is related to the amount of Ni, as Ni sites are responsible for catalyzing the GOR via the NiOOH/Ni(OH) 2 pair. However, the GOR kinetics increases with the amount of Sn, associated with an enhancement of the OH - supply to the catalyst surface for Ni(OH) 2 reoxidation to NiOOH. NiSn nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (NiSn/CNT) exhibit excellent current densities and direct GOR via C-C cleavage mechanism, obtaining FA with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93 % at 1.45 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. GOR selectivity is further studied by varying the applied potential, glucose concentration, reaction time, and temperature. FE toward FA production decreases due to formic overoxidation to carbonates at low glucose concentrations and high applied potentials, while acetic and lactic acids are obtained with high selectivity at high glucose concentrations and 55 °C. Introduction: Before implementing a new health care strategy, it is important to assess effectiveness but also to perform an economic evaluation. The goal of the present study was to perform a comparative economic evaluation of a new strategy aimed at using proposed implementation of the Plateletworks guidance (measurement of platelet function) with usual practice (delayed time to surgery) in patients on chronic antiplatelet treatment and scheduled for surgery with neuraxial anaesthesia due to proximal femur fracture., Methods: This is an economic evaluation carried out alongside a randomised controlled clinical trial at four centres in Spain. Patients were randomised to undergo either early platelet function-guided surgery (experimental group) or delayed surgery (control group). As AFFEcT trial results demonstrated significative difference between groups in the primary efficacy endpoint, the median time to surgery, a cost-effectiveness analysis was performed. Direct costs associated with hospitalisation until one-month post-discharge were considered and measured from a hospital perspective. All costs were reported in euros. Analyses were performed on a per protocol basis. Effectiveness outcome measures were the incremental cost and incremental cost per reduction in days to surgery. A deterministic sensitivity analysis was implemented to quantify uncertainty., Results: A total of 156 patients were randomized to the two groups ( n  = 78 per group). A total of 143 patients were included in the per protocol population (75 and 68 patients in the experimental and control groups, respectively). The median time to surgery was 2.30 days (IQR: 1.53-3.73) in the experimental group and 4.87 days (4.36-5.60) in the control group (a reduction of 2.40 days). Total costs during the 1-month study perioperative period were higher in the delayed surgery group (€18,495.19) than for the early surgery group (€16,497.59). The incremental cost was negative (€1,997.60), a statistically significant difference ( P  < 0.05). As measured by the reduction in time (days) to surgery, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for early surgery was negative (777.28€/day). Background: 10% of postmenopausal breast cancer cases are attributed to a high body mass index (BMI). BMI underestimates body fat, particularly in older women, and therefore the cancer burden attributable to obesity may be even higher. However, this is not clear. CUN-BAE (Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator) is an accurate validated estimator of body fat, taking into account sex and age. The objective of this study was to compare the burden of postmenopausal breast cancer attributable to excess body fat calculated using BMI and CUN-BAE., Methods: This case-control study included 1033 cases of breast cancer and 1143 postmenopausal population controls from the multicase-control MCC-Spain study. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs). The population attributable fraction (PAF) of excess weight related to breast cancer was estimated with both anthropometric measures. Stratified analyses were carried out for hormone receptor type., Results: Excess body weight attributable to the risk of breast cancer was 23.0% when assessed using a BMI value ≥30 kg/m 2 and 38.0% when assessed using a CUN-BAE value of ≥40% body fat. Hormone receptor stratification showed that these differences in PAFs were only observed in hormone receptor positive cases, with an estimated burden of 19.9% for BMI and 41.9% for CUN-BAE., Conclusion: These findings suggest that the significance of excess body fat in postmenopausal hormone receptor positive breast cancer could be underestimated when assessed using only BMI. Bioabsorbable Mg wire-reinforced poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix composites are potential candidate for load-bearing orthopedic implants offering tailorable mechanical and degradation properties by stacking sequence, volume fraction and surface modification of Mg wires. In this study, we investigated the cytocompatibility, cell-material interaction, and bone differentiation behavior of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells for medical-grade PLA, Mg/PLA, and PEO-Mg/PLA (having PEO surface modification on Mg wires) composites. MTT and live/dead assay showed excellent biocompatibility of both composites while cell-material interaction analysis revealed that cells were able to adhere and proliferate on the surface of composites. Cells on the longitudinal surface of composites showed a high and uniform cell density while those on transversal surfaces initially avoided Mg regions but later migrated back after the formation of the passivation layer. Bone differentiation tests showed that cells in extracts of PLA and composites were able to initiate the differentiation process as osteogenesis-related gene expressions, alkaline phosphatase protein quantity, and calcium mineralization increased after 7 and 14 days of culture. Interestingly, the bone differentiation response of PEO-Mg/PLA composite was found to be similar to medical-grade PLA, proving its superiority over Mg/PLA composite., (© 2024 The Author(s).
