Quantitative Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) during in-situ straining experiment is able to reveal the motion of dislocations -- linear defects in the crystal lattice of metals. In the domain of materials science, the knowledge about the location and movement of dislocations is important for creating novel materials with superior properties. A long-standing problem, however, is to identify the position and extract the shape of dislocations, which would ultimately help to create a digital twin of such materials. In this work, we quantitatively compare state-of-the-art instance segmentation methods, including Mask R-CNN and YOLOv8. The dislocation masks as the results of the instance segmentation are converted to mathematical lines, enabling quantitative analysis of dislocation length and geometry -- important information for the domain scientist, which we then propose to include as a novel length-aware quality metric for estimating the network performance. Our segmentation pipeline shows a high accuracy suitable for all domain-specific, further post-processing. Additionally, our physics-based metric turns out to perform much more consistently than typically used pixel-wise metrics.

Abstract Introduction Cortico‐cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) were described as reproducible during trains of single‐pulse electrical stimulations (SPES). Still, few studies described a variability of CCEPs that was higher within the epileptogenic zone (EZ). This study aimed at characterizing the relationship of CCEP variability with the occurrence of interictal/ictal epileptiform discharges at the temporal vicinity of the stimulation, but not during the stimulation, by effective connectivity modifications. Methods We retrospectively included 20 patients who underwent SPES during their stereo‐electroencephalography (SEEG). We analyzed the variability of CCEPs by using the post‐stimulation time course of intertrial standard deviation (amplitude) and the timing of peak amplitude signal of CCEP epochs (latency). Values were corrected for the Euclidian distance between stimulating/recording electrodes. Receiver operating characteristics curves were used to assess the relationship with the EZ. The link between CCEP variability and interictal discharges occurrence, seizure frequency prior to the SEEG recording, and number of seizures during SEEG recording was assessed with Spearman's correlations. Results A relationship was demonstrated between the EZ and both the distance‐corrected latency variation (area under the curve (AUC): 0.73–0.74) and the distance‐corrected amplitude variation (AUC: 0.71–0.72) and both were related with the occurrence of seizures. Conclusion Seizures before/during SEEG impact the dynamics of effective connectivity within the epileptogenic network by reducing the variability of CCEP latency/amplitude when the seizure frequency increases. It suggests a strengthening of the epileptogenic network with the occurrence of many seizures. These findings stress the importance of early epilepsy surgery at a time when the network organization has not yet been complete.

Online Behavioral Advertising (OBA), a recently emerging format of internet advertising, targets users based on their past online behaviors. This study examines the impact of OBA on consumer attitudes and impulse buying behavior, while exploring the moderating influence of privacy concerns, a crucial factor given that OBA relies on personal data collection. To test our conceptual model, we conducted surveys in Korea and France, to further analyze the potential cultural distinctions. Our findings, derived from a series of linear regression models, reveal that OBA significantly affects consumers' impulse buying, with this effect mediated by consumers' attitudes toward OBA. Moreover, consumers' privacy concerns weaken the positive effect of OBA on attitudes. Notably, we observe significant cultural differences, with these effects primarily manifesting in the Korean sample. Our study provides valuable insights for creating effective online advertising strategies that contribute to consumers' purchase funnel, ultimately leading to purchases, while addressing privacy concerns and cultural variations.

Abstract Background Solving the structure of mRNA transcripts is a major challenge for both research and molecular diagnostic purposes. Current approaches based on short-read RNA sequencing and RT-PCR techniques cannot fully explore the complexity of transcript structure. The emergence of third-generation long-read sequencing addresses this problem by solving this sequence directly. However, genes with low expression levels are difficult to study with the whole transcriptome sequencing approach. To fix this technical limitation, we propose a novel method to capture transcripts of a gene panel using a targeted enrichment approach suitable for Pacific Biosciences and Oxford Nanopore Technologies platforms. Results We designed a set of probes to capture transcripts of a panel of genes involved in hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. We present SOSTAR (iSofOrmS annoTAtoR), a versatile pipeline to assemble, quantify and annotate isoforms from long read sequencing using a new tool specially designed for this application. The significant enrichment of transcripts by our capture protocol, together with the SOSTAR annotation, allowed the identification of 1,231 unique transcripts within the gene panel from the eight patients sequenced. The structure of these transcripts was annotated with a resolution of one base relative to a reference transcript. All major alternative splicing events of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes described in the literature were found. Complex splicing events such as pseudoexons were correctly annotated. SOSTAR enabled the identification of abnormal transcripts in the positive controls. In addition, a case of unexplained inheritance in a family with a history of breast and ovarian cancer was solved by identifying an SVA retrotransposon in intron 13 of the BRCA1 gene. Conclusions We have validated a new protocol for the enrichment of transcripts of interest using probes adapted to the ONT and PacBio platforms. This protocol allows a complete description of the alternative structures of transcripts, the estimation of their expression and the identification of aberrant transcripts in a single experiment. This proof-of-concept opens new possibilities for RNA structure exploration in both research and molecular diagnostics.

Abstract Background The aging global population forecasts a significant rise in severe trauma cases among individuals aged 65 and above. Frailty emerges as a paramount predictor of post-traumatic outcomes, surpassing age and trauma severity indices. Despite this, scant attention is given to the trajectory of elderly patients post-intensive care unit (ICU) stay following severe trauma, justifying this study. The objective of this study was to analyze trajectories (frailty, place of residence) following a major trauma requiring an ICU stay. Materials and methods An observational cohort study was conducted, leveraging data from a level 1 trauma center spanning 2018 to 2023. Inclusion criteria included elderly patients aged 65 and above admitted to the ICU for severe trauma. Data encompassed demographic profiles, trauma severity scores, clinical parameters, and frailty assessments sourced from the Traumabase database. Results Among 293 patients included 190 were non-frail, frailty was correlated with elevated mortality rates (114 (38.9%) at 6 months), heightened incidence of traumatic brain injuries, and notable declines in post-traumatic autonomy. Only 39.2% of patients had resumed residence at home six months post-injury, with a conspicuous trend towards institutionalization, particularly among frail individuals. Conclusion This study highlights the role of frailty in determining the outcomes of elderly patients following severe trauma. Frailty is associated with higher mortality, increased rates of institutionalization, and a decline in functional status. These results highlight the importance of assessing frailty in the trajectory of severely injured patients over the age of 65 years-old.

Crystalline defects, such as line-like dislocations, play an important role for the performance and reliability of many metallic devices. Their interaction and evolution still poses a multitude of open questions to materials science and materials physics. In-situ TEM experiments can provide important insights into how dislocations behave and move. During such experiments, the dislocation microstructure is captured in form of videos. The analysis of individual video frames can provide useful insights but is limited by the capabilities of automated identification, digitization, and quantitative extraction of the dislocations as curved objects. The vast amount of data also makes manual annotation very time consuming, thereby limiting the use of Deep Learning-based, automated image analysis and segmentation of the dislocation microstructure. In this work, a parametric model for generating synthetic training data for segmentation of dislocations is developed. Even though domain scientists might dismiss synthetic training images sometimes as too artificial, our findings show that they can result in superior performance, particularly regarding the generalizing of the Deep Learning models with respect to different microstructures and imaging conditions. Additionally, we propose an enhanced deep learning method optimized for segmenting overlapping or intersecting dislocation lines. Upon testing this framework on four distinct real datasets, we find that our synthetic training data are able to yield high-quality results also on real images-even more so if fine-tune on a few real images was done.

Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) is a salmonid fish that is the second-most consumed country food species by Nunavimmiut. Its nutritional quality is determined by omega-3 fatty acids and carotenoid pigments. Those molecules cannot be synthetized by fish and must be acquired through diet. We sampled Arctic char in 10 rivers from the three marine coastal regions of Nunavik (Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait, and Ungava Bay), described diet (stable isotopes δ13C and δ15N) and flesh quality (fatty acids and carotenoids, measured by chromatography) and assessed associations between both diet and flesh quality (including also bio-impedance and colorimetry). Our results suggested inter-regional differences in the diet and nutritional quality of Arctic char in Nunavik, where δ13C values indicated that the diet of Arctic char in Hudson Bay was more pelagic, while in Ungava Bay it was more coastal. We also observed inter-regional differences in omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin, the pigment responsible for the redness of the flesh color, where concentrations were highest in Ungava Bay Arctic char. In all sampling locations, Arctic char were an exceptional source of omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin, confirming its importance as a high-quality wild food. Our models suggest that astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, and water content influence flesh redness. Our data highlight inter-regional differences that could be taken in consideration to better predict the impact of climate change on fish quality and, ultimately, on Inuit diet and health.

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for estimating the modes of an observed non-stationary mixture signal. A link is first established between the short-time Fourier transform and the sparse sampling theory, where the observations are modeled as a stream of pulses filtered by a known function. As the signal to retrieve has a finite rate of innovation (FRI), an adapted reconstruction approach is used to estimate the signal modes in the presence of noise. We compare our results with state-of-the-art methods and validate our approach by highlighting an improvement of the estimation performance in different scenarios. Our approach paves the way of future FRI-based mode disentangling algorithms.

SUPPLY & demand ,EMPLOYEE selection - Abstract
Production and service systems often rely on stationary queueing formulas to determine the number of agents that need to be scheduled. However, this results in over-staffing decisions when the system starts empty. To address this issue, we propose a solution called transient staffing, which involves providing appointment times for agents to ensure that the expected queue length remains below a certain threshold. We model the system as a transient Erlang-A queue. To compute the appointment times, we employ a uniformized approximation that discretizes the elapsed time, which can be made as accurate as desired. We prove that the appointment times decrease with the arrival rate and traffic intensity, while increasing with the abandonment rate. Through numerical investigations, we find that adopting a transient staffing strategy leads to substantial cost savings, especially in scenarios where demand is high, customers are patient, traffic intensity is low, and the service level objective is intermediate. Furthermore, we use a fluid approximation to derive closed-form expressions for the agents' appointment times, and prove the impact of the system parameters. We show that this approximation performs well in predicting the first appointment times in contexts with high demand, low traffic intensity, and lax service level objective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
High entropy alloys are a class of materials with many significant improvements in terms of mechanical properties as compared to ``classical'' alloys. The corresponding structure-property relations are not yet entirely clear, but it is commonly believed that the good mechanical performance is strongly related to dislocation interactions with the complex energy landscape formed due to alloying. Although in-situ Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) allows high-resolution studies of the structure and dynamics of moving dislocations and makes the local obstacle/energy ``landscape'' directly visible in the geometry of dislocations; such observation, however, are merely qualitative, and detailed three-dimensional analyses of the interaction between dislocations and the energy landscape is still missing. In this work, we utilized dislocations as ``probes'' for the local energy maxima which play the role of pinning points for the dislocation movement. To this end, we developed a unique data-mining approach that can perform coarse-grained spatio-temporal analysis, making ensemble averaging of a considerable number of snapshots possible. We investigate the effect of pinning points on the dislocation gliding behavior of CoCrFeMnNi alloy during in-situ TEM straining and find that (i) the pinning point strength changes when dislocations glide through and (ii) the pinning point moves along the direction close to the Burgers vector direction. Our data-mining method can be applied to dislocation motion in general, making it a useful tool for dislocation research.

Mathematics - Statistics Theory - Abstract
We propose an approach to construct a new family of generalized Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern (GFGM) copulas that naturally scales to high dimensions. A GFGM copula can model moderate positive and negative dependence, cover different types of asymmetries, and admits exact expressions for many quantities of interest such as measures of association or risk measures in actuarial science or quantitative risk management. More importantly, this paper presents a new method to construct high-dimensional copulas based on mixtures of power functions, and may be adapted to more general contexts to construct broader families of copulas. We construct a family of copulas through a stochastic representation based on multivariate Bernoulli distributions and Coxian-2 distributions. This paper will cover the construction of a GFGM copula, study its measures of multivariate association and dependence properties. We explain how to sample random vectors from the new family of copulas in high dimensions. Then, we study the bivariate case in detail and find that our construction leads to an asymmetric modified Huang-Kotz FGM copula. Finally, we study the exchangeable case and provide some insights into the most negative dependence structure within this new class of high-dimensional copulas.

Science - Abstract
Abstract The Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is an emerging pathogen of the Orthonairovirus genus that can cause severe and often lethal hemorrhagic diseases in humans. CCHFV has a broad tropism and can infect a variety of species and tissues. Here, by using gene silencing, blocking antibodies or soluble receptor fragments, we identify the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) as a CCHFV entry factor. The LDL-R facilitates binding of CCHFV particles but does not allow entry of Hazara virus (HAZV), another member of the genus. In addition, we show that apolipoprotein E (apoE), an exchangeable protein that mediates LDL/LDL-R interaction, is incorporated on CCHFV particles, though not on HAZV particles, and enhances their specific infectivity by promoting an LDL-R dependent entry. Finally, we show that molecules that decrease LDL-R from the surface of target cells could inhibit CCHFV infection. Our study highlights that CCHFV takes advantage of a lipoprotein receptor and recruits its natural ligand to promote entry into cells.

Background: Virtually everyone is exposed to power-frequency MF (50/60 Hz), inducing in our body electric fields and currents, potentially modulating brain function. MF-induced electric fields within the central nervous system can generate flickering visual perceptions (magnetophosphenes), which form the basis of international MF exposure guidelines and recommendations protecting workers and the general public. However, magnetophosphene perception thresholds were estimated 40 years ago in a small, unreplicated study with significant uncertainties and leaving open the question of the involved interaction site. Methods: We used a stimulation modality termed transcranial alternating magnetic stimulation (tAMS), delivering in situ sinusoidal electric fields comparable to transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Magnetophosphene perception was quantified in 81 volunteers exposed to MF (eye or occipital exposure) between 0 and 50 mT at frequencies of 20, 50, 60 and 100 Hz. Results: Reliable magnetophosphene perception was induced with tAMS without any scalp sensation, a major advantage as compared to tACS. Frequency-dependent thresholds were quantified using binary logistic regressions hence allowing to establish condition dependent probabilities of perception. Results support an interaction between induced current density and retinal rod cells. Conclusion: Beyond fundamental and immediate implications for international safety guidelines, and for identifying the interaction site underlying phosphene perception (ubiquitous in tACS experiments), our results support exploring the potential of tAMS for the differential diagnosis of retinal disorders and neuromodulation therapy.

This work deals with an inverse two-dimensional nonlinear heat conduction problem to determine the top and lateral surface transfer coefficients. For this, the \textsc{B}ayesian framework with the \textsc{M}arkov Chain \textsc{M}onte \textsc{C}arlo algorithm is used to determine the posterior distribution of unknown parameters. To handle the computational burden, a lumped one-dimensional model is proposed. The lumped model approximations are considered within the parameter estimation procedure thanks to the Approximation Error Model. The experiments are carried out for several configurations of chamber ventilator speed. Experimental observations are obtained through a complete measurement uncertainty propagation. By solving the inverse problem, accurate probability distributions are determined. Additional investigations are performed to demonstrate the reliability of the lumped model, in terms of accuracy and computational gains.

This study explores the potential of untapped lithium hydroxide (LiOH) as a phase change material for thermal energy storage. By overcoming the challenges associated with the liquid LiOH leakage, we successfully thermal-cycled LiOH in a laboratory scale experimentation, and observed its stability (>500 thermal cycles), without chemical decomposition. This step has never been performed to date. Its solid-to-liquid reversible transitions temperatures and related solidification/melting enthalpies values have been verified. Then, the first experimental characterization of LiOH's thermal properties shows unexpected values for its heat capacity, thermal conductivity and diffusivity, in contradiction with the few ones available in literature. This opens avenues for LiOH's applications for the storage of sensible and latent heat, as shown through the increased cycle efficiency potential of a thermal energy storage system if based on its energy storage capacity; up to six times more volumetric energy density compared to traditional Solar Salt-based systems used in the solar tower plant (4.5 GJ/m3 vs. 0.76 GJ/m3 over 1000 thermal cycles). Additionally, we observed a softening phenomenon that occurs inconsistently during heating, but which may account for its excellent melting properties and the interplay with other raw chemicals. This new insight contributes certainly to the underlying mechanisms in the synthesis of another promising heat storage material in development: the peritectic compound Li4Br(OH)3. This pioneering work suggests LiOH as a promising ultra-compact thermal energy storage material for filling the intermediary gap from current to next-generation solar power plants, although its large-scale application requires further investigation to achieve economic viability.

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity ,Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The recent observation of cyclotron resonance in optimally-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using time-domain THz spectroscopy in high magnetic field has given new possibilities for the study of cuprate superconductors. One can measure the cyclotron mass in more disordered cuprates possesing short scattering times therefore expanding the study to materials and dopings in which quantum oscillations have not been observed. Here we present the measurement of the carrier mass of the hole doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ across a a range of dopings spanning the slightly underdoped ($x=0.13$) to highly overdoped ($x=0.26$), near to the termination of the superconducting dome. These results reveal a systematic increase of $m_c$ with doping, up to values greater than thirteen times the bare electron mass. This is in contrast with those masses extracted from the heat capacity, which show a peak near the pseudogap critical point $p^*$ and/or Lifshitz transition. The cyclotron frequency is linear in field up to 31 T for all dopings giving no evidence for field induced Fermi surface reconstructions. The cyclotron mass is found to be positive for all dopings, but with a magnitude systematically below the heat capacity mass for under and optimally doped samples, while exceeding it for overdoped samples. Among other aspects, these results are surprising as photoemission reveals a Lifshitz transition in the middle of our doping range and the sign of the cyclotron mass determined from a finite frequency resonance is -- in conventional theories -- a {\it topological quantity} only sensitive to whether or not the Fermi surface is closed around holes or electrons. We see no sign of a divergence of the mass near $p^*$ nor near the Lifshitz transition, showing that any singularity -- if it exists -- is not strong enough to affect the cyclotron mass., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The observation of hydrodynamic transport in the metallic delafossite PdCoO$_2$ has increased interest in this family of highly conductive oxides, but experimental studies so far have mostly been confined to bulk crystals. In this work, the development of high-quality thin films of PdCoO$_2$ has enabled a thorough study of the conductivity as a function of film thickness using both dc transport and time-domain THz spectroscopy. With increasing film thickness from 12 nm to 102 nm, the residual resistivity decreases and we observe a large deviation from Matthiessen's rule (DMR) in the temperature dependence of the resistivity. We find that the complex THz conductivity is well fit by a single Drude term. We fit the data to extract the spectral weight and scattering rate simultaneously. The temperature dependence of the Drude scattering rate is found to be nearly independent of the residual resistivity and cannot be the primary mechanism for the observed DMR. Rather, we observe large changes in the spectral weight as a function of disorder, changing by a factor of 1.5 from the most disordered to least disordered films. We believe this corresponds to a mass enhancement of $\geq 2$ times the value of the bulk effective mass which increases with residual disorder. This suggests that the mechanism behind the DMR observed in dc resistivity is primarily driven by changes in the electron mass. We discuss the possible origins of this behavior including the possibility of disorder-enhanced electron-phonon scattering, which can be systematically tuned by film thickness., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the modes of an observed non-stationary mixture signal in the presence of an arbitrary distributed noise. A novel Bayesian model is introduced to estimate the model parameters from the spectrogram of the observed signal, by resorting to the stochastic version of the EM algorithm to avoid the computationally expensive joint parameters estimation from the posterior distribution. The proposed method is assessed through comparative experiments with state-of-the-art methods. The obtained results validate the proposed approach by highlighting an improvement of the modes estimation performance., Comment: Submitted to GRETSI 2022

In this article, we present the main models of written verbal production activity that allow us to analyze and describe the processes implemented during this activity. According to these models, writers activate several types of knowledge: knowledge about the domain of the world evoked by the text to be produced, knowledge about language and texts, and pragmatic knowledge. The analysis of these models makes it possible to account for and describe the knowledge activated during the realization of this text production activity, but also the different processes implemented during this complex cognitive activity. We examine the effects of the development and generalized use of digital tools on the functioning of working memory and written verbal production.

Drug development from medicinal plants constitutes an important strategy for finding natural anticancer therapies. While several plant secondary metabolites with potential antitumor activities have been identified, well-defined mechanisms of action remained uncovered. In fact, studies of medicinal plants have often focused on the genome, transcriptome, and proteome, dismissing the relevance of the metabolome for discovering effective plant-based drugs. Metabolomics has gained huge interest in cancer research as it facilitates the identification of potential anticancer metabolites and uncovers the metabolomic alterations that occur in cancer cells in response to treatment. This holds great promise for investigating the mode of action of target metabolites. Although metabolomics has made significant contributions to drug discovery, research in this area is still ongoing. In this review, we emphasize the significance of plant metabolomics in anticancer research, which continues to be a potential technique for the development of anticancer drugs in spite of all the challenges encountered. As well, we provide insights into the essential elements required for performing effective metabolomics analyses.

Computer Science - Computational Engineering, Finance, and Science ,Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
Within the environmental context, several tools based on simulations have been proposed to analyze the physical phenomena of heat and mass transfer in porous materials. However, it is still an open challenge to propose tools that do not require to perform computations to catch the dominant processes. Thus, this article proposes to explore advantages of using a dimensionless analysis by scaling the governing equations of heat and mass transfer. Proposed methodology introduces dimensionless numbers and their nonlinear distortions. The relevant investigation enables to enhance the preponderant phenomena to \emph{(i)} compare different categories of materials, \emph{(ii)} evaluate the competition between heat and mass transfer for each material or \emph{(iii)} describe the transfer in multi-layered wall configurations. It also permits to define hygrothermal kinetic, geometric and dynamic similarities among different physical materials. Equivalent systems can be characterized in the framework of experimental or wall designs. Three cases are presented for similarity studies in terms of \emph{(i)} equivalent material length, \emph{(ii)} time of heat and mass transfer and \emph{(iii)} experimental configurations. All these advantages are illustrated in the given article considering $49$ building materials separated in $7$ categories.
