1. LLM-for-X: Application-agnostic Integration of Large Language Models to Support Personal Writing Workflows

Abstract

To enhance productivity and to streamline workflows, there is a growing trend to embed large language model (LLM) functionality into applications, from browser-based web apps to native apps that run on personal computers. Here, we introduce LLM-for-X, a system-wide shortcut layer that seamlessly augments any application with LLM services through a lightweight popup dialog. Our native layer seamlessly connects front-end applications to popular LLM backends, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, using their uniform chat front-ends as the programming interface or their custom API calls. We demonstrate the benefits of LLM-for-X across a wide variety of applications, including Microsoft Office, VSCode, and Adobe Acrobat as well as popular web apps such as Overleaf. In our evaluation, we compared LLM-for-X with ChatGPT's web interface in a series of tasks, showing that our approach can provide users with quick, efficient, and easy-to-use LLM assistance without context switching to support writing and reading tasks that is agnostic of the specific application.

2. Deep Learning with Information Fusion and Model Interpretation for Health Monitoring of Fetus based on Long-term Prenatal Electronic Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring Data

Abstract

Long-term fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring during the antepartum period, increasingly popularized by electronic FHR monitoring, represents a growing approach in FHR monitoring. This kind of continuous monitoring, in contrast to the short-term one, collects an extended period of fetal heart data. This offers a more comprehensive understanding of fetus's conditions. However, the interpretation of long-term antenatal fetal heart monitoring is still in its early stages, lacking corresponding clinical standards. Furthermore, the substantial amount of data generated by continuous monitoring imposes a significant burden on clinical work when analyzed manually. To address above challenges, this study develops an automatic analysis system named LARA (Long-term Antepartum Risk Analysis system) for continuous FHR monitoring, combining deep learning and information fusion methods. LARA's core is a well-established convolutional neural network (CNN) model. It processes long-term FHR data as input and generates a Risk Distribution Map (RDM) and Risk Index (RI) as the analysis results. We evaluate LARA on inner test dataset, the performance metrics are as follows: AUC 0.872, accuracy 0.816, specificity 0.811, sensitivity 0.806, precision 0.271, and F1 score 0.415. In our study, we observe that long-term FHR monitoring data with higher RI is more likely to result in adverse outcomes (p=0.0021). In conclusion, this study introduces LARA, the first automated analysis system for long-term FHR monitoring, initiating the further explorations into its clinical value in the future.

Abstract

The non-line-of-sight imaging technique aims to reconstruct targets from multiply reflected light. For most existing methods, dense points on the relay surface are raster scanned to obtain high-quality reconstructions, which requires a long acquisition time. In this work, we propose a signal-surface collaborative regularization (SSCR) framework that provides noise-robust reconstructions with a minimal number of measurements. Using Bayesian inference, we design joint regularizations of the estimated signal, the 3D voxel-based representation of the objects, and the 2D surface-based description of the targets. To our best knowledge, this is the first work that combines regularizations in mixed dimensions for hidden targets. Experiments on synthetic and experimental datasets illustrated the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method under both confocal and non-confocal settings. We report the reconstruction of the hidden targets with complex geometric structures with only $5 \times 5$ confocal measurements from public datasets, indicating an acceleration of the conventional measurement process by a factor of 10000. Besides, the proposed method enjoys low time and memory complexities with sparse measurements. Abstract

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging aims at reconstructing targets obscured from the direct line of sight. Existing NLOS imaging algorithms require dense measurements at rectangular grid points in a large area of the relay surface, which severely hinders their availability to variable relay scenarios in practical applications such as robotic vision, autonomous driving, rescue operations and remote sensing. In this work, we propose a Bayesian framework for NLOS imaging with no specific requirements on the spatial pattern of illumination and detection points. By introducing virtual confocal signals, we design a confocal complemented signal-object collaborative regularization (CC-SOCR) algorithm for high quality reconstructions. Our approach is capable of reconstructing both albedo and surface normal of the hidden objects with fine details under the most general relay setting. Moreover, with a regular relay surface, coarse rather than dense measurements are enough for our approach such that the acquisition time can be reduced significantly. 12. A non-local gradient based approach of infinity Laplacian with $\Gamma$-convergence

Abstract

We propose an infinity Laplacian method to address the problem of interpolation on an unstructured point cloud. In doing so, we find the labeling function with the smallest infinity norm of its gradient. By introducing the non-local gradient, the continuous functional is approximated with a discrete form. The discrete problem is convex and can be solved efficiently with the split Bregman method. Experimental results indicate that our approach provides consistent interpolations and the labeling functions obtained are globally smooth, even in the case of extreme low sampling rate. More importantly, convergence of the discrete minimizer to the optimal continuous labeling function is proved using $\Gamma$-convergence and compactness, which guarantees the reliability of the infinity Laplacian method in various potential applications., Comment: 44 pages, 4 figures

20. OsAMT1.1 Expression by Nitrate-Inducible Promoter of OsNAR2.1 Increases Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Rice Yield

Abstract

Nitrate (NO3–) and ammonium (NH4+) are two main inorganic nitrogen (N) sources during crop growth. Here, we enhanced the expression of OsAMT1.1, which encodes a NH4+ transporter, using the NO3–-inducible promoter of OsNAR2.1 and an ubiquitin promoter in transgenic rice plants. Under field condition of 120 kg /hm2 N, agronomic N use efficiency, N recovery efficiency and N transport efficiency, and grain yield of the pOsNAR2.1:OsAMT1.1 transgenic lines were increased compared with those of the wild type (WT) and the pUbi:OsAMT1.1 transgenic plants. Under 2.0 mmol/L NO3– + 0.5 mmol/L NH4+ and 0.5 mmol/L NO3– + 2.0 mmol/L NH4+ conditions of hydroponic culture, compared with the WT, both biomass and total N content were increased in the pOsNAR2.1:OsAMT1.1 transgenic lines. However, biomass was significantly reduced in pUbi:OsAMT1.1 transgenic plants under 0.5 mmol/L NO3– + 2.0 mmol/L NH4+ condition. The lines expressing pOsNAR2.1:OsAMT1.1 exhibited increased OsAMT1.1 expression and 15NH4+ influx in roots under both 2.0 mmol/L NO3– + 0.5 mmol/L NH4+ and 0.5 mmol/L NO3– + 2.0 mmol/L NH4+ conditions. Our study showed that expression of OsAMT1.1 can be promoted when driven by the OsNAR2.1 promoter, especially under high-level nitrate condition, leading to enhancement of NH4+ uptake, N use efficiency and grain yield.

Abstract

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) have shown osteogenic and bone regenerative potential. Improving the in situ bone regeneration potential of DPSC is crucial for their application as seed cells during bone defect reconstruction in clinics. This study aimed to develop DPSC-derived organoid-like microspheroids as effective seeds for bone tissue engineering applications. DPSC osteogenic microspheroids (70 μm diameter) were cultured in a polydimethylsiloxane-mold-based agarose-gel microwell-culture-system with or without cannabidiol (CBD)-treatment. Results of in vitro studies showed higher osteogenic differentiation potential of microspheroids compared with 2D-cultured-DPSC. CBD treatment further improved the osteogenic differentiation potential of microspheroids. The effect of CBD treatment in the osteogenic differentiation of microspheroids was more pronounced compared with that of CBD-treated 2D-cultured-DPSC. Microspheroids showed a higher degree of bone regeneration in nude mice calvarial bone defect compared to 2D-cultured-DPSC. CBD-treated microspheroids showed the most robust in situ bone regenerative potential compared with microspheroids or CBD-treated 2D-cultured-DPSC. According to mRNA sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, and confirmation study, the higher osteogenic potential of CBD-treated microspheroids was mainly attributed to WNT6 upregulation. Taken together, DPSC microspheroids have robust osteogenic potential and can effectively translate the effect of in vitro osteoinductive stimulation during in situ bone regeneration, indicating their application potential during bone defect reconstruction in clinics. Abstract

Sonic layer depth (SLD) is crucial in ocean acoustics research and profoundly influences sound propagation and Sonar detection. Carrying 90% of oceanic kinetic energy, mesoscale eddies significantly impact the propagation of acoustic energy in the ocean. Recent studies classified mesoscale eddies into normal eddies (warm anticyclonic and cold cyclonic eddies) and abnormal eddies (cold anticyclonic and warm cyclonic eddies). However, the influence of mesoscale eddies, especially abnormal eddies, on SLD remains unclear. Based on satellite altimeter and reanalysis data, we explored the influence of mesoscale eddies on seasonal variations in SLD in the South China Sea. We found that the vertical structures of temperature anomalies within the eddies had a significant impact on the sound speed field. A positive correlation between sonic layer depth anomaly (SLDA) and eddy intensity (absolute value of relative vorticity) was investigated. The SLDA showed significant seasonal variations: during summer (winter), the proportion of negative (positive) SLDA increased. Normal eddies (abnormal eddies) had a more pronounced effect during summer and autumn (spring and winter). Based on mixed-layer heat budget analysis, it was found that the seasonal variation in SLD was primarily induced by air–sea heat fluxes. However, for abnormal eddies, the horizontal advection and vertical convective terms modulated the variations in the SLDA. This study provides additional theoretical support for mesoscale eddy–acoustic coupling models and advances our understanding of the impact of mesoscale eddies on sound propagation. Abstract

With the continuous research on functional factors, the essential components in functional foods, numerous functional factors have been developed and applied to functional foods. For instance, unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols and carotenoids have their own low bioavailability due to their special physicochemical properties, thus restricting their application in food. Therefore, the development of functional factor transport systems to improve the utilization of functional factors in food organisms has become an urgent problem to be solved. In this paper, we systematically summarize the physicochemical properties of nanoemulsions, multilayer emulsions, solid -phase lipid particles, and gel particles based on recent research on functional factor delivery systems and explain the mechanism of action and application of various delivery systems. The target delivery system could help improve functional factors' problems and achieve the controlled release of targeted action sites in vivo. 48. Correlational analysis of sarcopenia and multimorbidity among older inpatients.

Abstract

Background: Sarcopenia and multimorbidity are common in older adults, and most of the available clinical studies have focused on the relationship between specialist disorders and sarcopenia, whereas fewer studies have been conducted on the relationship between sarcopenia and multimorbidity. We therefore wished to explore the relationship between the two. Methods: The study subjects were older patients (aged ≥ 65 years) who were hospitalized at the Department of Geriatrics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between March 2016 and September 2021. Their medical records were collected. Based on the diagnostic criteria of the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group in 2019, the relationship between sarcopenia and multimorbidity was elucidated. Results: 1.A total of 651 older patients aged 65 years and above with 2 or more chronic diseases were investigated in this study, 46.4% were suffering from sarcopenia. 2. Analysis of the relationship between the number of chronic diseases and sarcopenia yielded that the risk of sarcopenia with 4–5 chronic diseases was 1.80 times higher than the risk of 2–3 chronic diseases (OR 1.80, 95%CI 0.29–2.50), and the risk of sarcopenia with ≥ 6 chronic diseases was 5.11 times higher than the risk of 2–3 chronic diseases (OR 5.11, 95% CI 2.97–9.08), which remained statistically significant, after adjusting for relevant factors. 3. The Charlson comorbidity index was associated with skeletal muscle mass index, handgrip strength, and 6–meter walking speed, with scores reaching 5 and above suggesting the possibility of sarcopenia. 4. After adjusting for some covariates among 14 common chronic diseases in older adults, diabetes (OR 3.20, 95% CI 2.01–5.09), cerebrovascular diseases (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.33–3.22), bone and joint diseases (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.32–3.14), and malignant tumors (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.17–6.55) were among those that still a risk factor for the development of sarcopenia. Conclusion: In the hospitalized older adults, the more chronic diseases they have, the higher the prevalence of sarcopenia.
