Background: Indigenous birds are low producer of egg and meat due to poor genetic potential. So, improved dual type backyard chicken rearing can increase egg and meat production in the rural areas. Scavenge feed resource is also an important factor on the performance of rural chicken. The nutrient status of these birds under scavenging system shall help to take future steps in this area. Methods: A study was conducted on 600 numbers (200 each of Indigenous, Vanaraja and Crossbred) chicken. The day old chicks were distributed in a contiguous area for convenience of the study. Accordingly 30 farmers (10 numbers of farmers for each group) were selected randomly and 20 numbers of chicks were provided to each of them for rearing. The chicks were brooded for initial three weeks by the beneficiaries by their traditional methods and different parameters were recorded. Result: The final body weights and part period egg production up to 52 weeks of age were found to differ significantly (P=0.05) among the types of chicken. The egg size was significantly (P=0.05) different. Significantly (P=0.05) higher percentage of Crude protein (CP) and Crude fibre (CF) and lower Nitrogen free extract (NFE) of the crop contents were recorded in Vanaraja than Indigenous and Crossbred chickens. The mean CP contents of crop were significantly (P=0.05) highest in Vanaraja (10.24±0.37%) and lowest (9.16±0.29%) in Crossbred chicken. The mean CF contents of crop were differed significantly (P=0.05) among the type of birds. The mean NFE content was significantly (P=0.05) different among the types of chicken. The study showed that the nutrient concentrations of scavengeable feed resources consumed by rural poultry were below the recommended levels for optimum growth and egg production. Background: The present work was conducted to study the effect of incorporation of soy protein isolate (SPI) and Inulin (I) on certain Physico-chemical and sensory qualities of low-fat duck meat sausages. Methods: Duck meat sausages were prepared by using three different formulations i.e. T1 (2.5% I), T2 (2.5% SPI) and T3 (2.5% SPI+2.5% I) along with a control (CT-0% SPI and I). The pH, water holding capacity, TBARS value, tyrosine value and sensory qualities were evaluated on days 1, 5 and 10. Result: Duck meat sausages with a combination of 2.5% soy protein isolate and 2.5% inulin were the best ones, with a shelf-life of 10 days under refrigeration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A double regioselective cycloaddition reaction of 1,3-diynes with azide is reported to synthesize fully substituted 5-alkynyl-1,2,3-triazoles without any catalyst, metal, or other factor. Computational studies revealed that the 5-alkynyl-1,2,3-triazole derivative is both kinetically and thermodynamically favorable irrespective of the nature of the substituents at the alkyne termini in 1,3-diynes. The simplicity of the reaction, extremely high regioselectivity under metal-free conditions, wide substrate scope, and good to excellent yields might inspire further studies of the cycloaddition of 1,3-diynes in addition to click chemistry.

Background and Purpose: Onychomycosis caused by dematiaceous fungi is rarely reported and the identification is also quite tricky due to poor sporulation. Recent emergence of dematiaceous fungi as a major cause of onychomycosis is a matter of concern in the field of mycology. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the dematiaceous fungi as a possible cause of onychomycosis, especially among agricultural workers. In addition, the evaluation of the antifungal susceptibility patterns led to the idea of an accurate drug that will help to treat and prevent antifungal resistance., Materials and Methods: The standard procedure was followed for direct microscopic examination and fungi isolation. Furthermore, antifungal susceptibility testing was conducted in accordance with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute M-38-A2 protocol., Results: Both potassium hydroxide and fungal positivity were found in 275 out of 356 suspected cases, 52%, 4.3%, 28.7%, and 14.9% of which were non-dermatophytic molds (NDMs), yeast, dermatophytes, and sterile hyphae, respectively. Among NDMs (52%, n=143), 45.5% (n=65) were hyaline hyphomycetes and 54.5% (n=78) were dematiaceous hyphomycetes. Among dematiaceous fungi, Pestalotiopsis spp. and Arthrinium spp. were the commonly isolated ones. Additionally, azoles, amphotericin-B, and anidulafungin showed excellent antifungal activity against tested isolates., Conclusion: Dematiaceous fungi are now becoming a potential cause of onychomycosis. Mumps is a vaccine-preventable disease, and research on the vaccine's efficacy has recently indicated declining efficacy that has failed to protect against primary infections or reinfections, leading to a global resurgence in nations that use mumps vaccine in their national immunization programmes (NIPs). Lack of reports on its infection, documentation and published studies prevents it from being recognized as a public health issue in India. The waning of immunity is ascribed to the changes between the circulating and vaccine strains. The goal of the current study was to describe the circulating MuV strains in the Dibrugarh district of Assam, India, from 2016 to 2019. Blood samples were examined for IgM antibodies, and throat swab samples were put through Taqman assay for molecular detection. The small hydrophobic (SH) gene was targeted for genotyping through sequencing, and its genetic variations and phylogenetic analysis were carried out. Mumps RNA was found in 42 cases, and Mumps IgM in 14, of which 60% (25/42) of the cases were male and 40% (17/42) were female mostly affecting children between the ages of 6 and 12. Sequence and phylogeny analyses of SH gene revealed Genotypes C (83%) and G (17%) were simultaneously circulating during the study period. The study offers crucial genetic baseline information for the creation of Mumps prevention and control measures. Therefore, based on the research, it is clear that developing an effective vaccination strategy should take into account all currently prevalent genotypes in order to provide better protection against the disease's comeback., (© 2023. It is believed that establishment of the gut microbiome starts very early in life and is crucial for growth, immunity, and long-term metabolic health. In this longitudinal study, we recruited 25 mothers in their third trimester, of whom 15 had vaginal delivery while 10 had an unplanned cesarean section (C-section). The mother-neonate pairs were followed for 1 year, and we generated 16S metagenomic data to study the neonatal gut microbiome along with mother's breast milk and vaginal microbiomes through 12 months after delivery, at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. We inferred (i) mode of delivery is an important factor influencing both composition and entropy of the neonatal gut microbiome, and the genus Streptococcus plays an important role in the temporal differentiation. (ii) Microbial diversity monotonically increases with age, irrespective of the mode of delivery, and it is significantly altered once exclusive breastfeeding is stopped. (iii) We found little evidence in favor of the microflora of mother's breast milk and a vaginal swab being directly reflected in the offspring's gut microbiome; however, some distinction could be made in the gut microbiome of neonates whose mothers were classified as community state type III (CSTIII) and CSTIV, based on their vaginal microbiomes. (iv) A lot of the mature gut microbiome is possibly acquired from the environment, as the genera Prevotella and Faecalibacterium , two of the most abundant flora in the neonatal gut microbiome, are introduced after initiation of solidified food. The distinction between the gut microbiome of babies born by vaginal delivery and babies born by C-section becomes blurred after introduction of solid food, although the diversity in the gut microbiota drastically increases in both cases. IMPORTANCE Gut microbiome architecture seems to have a potential impact on host metabolism, health, and nutrition. Early life gut microbiome development is considered a crucial phenomenon for neonatal health as well as adulthood metabolic complications. In this longitudinal study, we examined the association of neonatal gut microbiome entropy and its temporal variation. The study revealed that adult-like gut microbiome architecture starts taking shape after initiation of solidified food. Further, we also observed that the difference of microbial diversity was reduced between vaginally delivered and C-section babies compared to exclusive breastfeeding tenure. Background and Objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are highly prevalent in the tribal populations; however, there are limited data regarding health system preparedness to tackle NCDs among these populations. We estimated the availability of human resources, equipment, drugs, services and knowledge of doctors for NCD management in the selected tribal districts in India., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 12 districts (one from each State) with at least 50 per cent tribal population in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and eight northeastern States. Primary health centres (PHCs), community health centres (CHCs) and district/sub-district hospitals (DHs) were surveyed and data on screening and treatment services, human resources, equipment, drugs and information systems indicators were collected and analysed. The data were presented as proportions., Results: In the present study 177 facilities were surveyed, including 156 PHCs/CHCs and 21 DHs. DHs and the majority (82-96%) of the PHCs/CHCs provided outpatient treatment for diabetes and hypertension. Overall, 97 per cent of PHCs/CHCs had doctors, and 78 per cent had staff nurses. The availability of digital blood pressure monitors ranged from 35 to 43 per cent, and drugs were either not available or inadequate. Among 213 doctors, three-fourths knew the correct criteria for hypertension diagnosis, and a few correctly reported diabetes diagnosis criteria., Interpretation & Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the health system of the studied tribal districts was not adequately prepared to manage NCDs. The key challenges included inadequately trained workforce and a lack of equipment and drugs. It is suggested that capacity building and, procurement and distribution of equipment, drugs and information systems to track NCD patients should be the key focus areas of national programmes.

Background & Objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death in India. Although studies have reported a high prevalence of NCD in tribal populations, there are limited data pertaining mortality due to NCDs. Therefore, in this study we estimated the proportion of deaths due to NCDs among 15 yr and older age group in tribal districts in India., Methods: We conducted a community-based survey in 12 districts (one per State) with more than 50 per cent tribal population. Data were collected using a verbal autopsy tool from the family member of the deceased. The estimated sample size was 452 deaths per district. We obtained the list of deaths for the reference period of one year and updated it during the survey. The cause of death was assigned using the International Classification of Diseases-10 classification and analyzed the proportions of causes of death. The age-standardized death rate (ASRD) was also estimated., Results: We surveyed 5292 deaths among those above 15 years of age. Overall, NCDs accounted for 66 per cent of the deaths, followed by infectious diseases (15%) and injuries (11%). Cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death in 10 of the 12 sites. In East Garo Hills (18%) and Lunglei (26%), neoplasms were the leading cause of death. ASRD due to NCD ranged from 426 in Kinnaur to 756 per 100,000 in East Garo Hills., Interpretation & Conclusions: The findings of this community-based survey suggested that NCDs were the leading cause of death among the tribal populations in India. It is hence suggested that control of NCDs should be one of the public health priorities for tribal districts in India.

The conventional paper-based system for malaria surveillance is time-consuming, difficult to track and resource-intensive. Few digital platforms are in use but wide-scale deployment and acceptability remain to be seen. To address this issue, we created a malaria surveillance mobile app that offers real-time data to stakeholders and establishes a centralised data repository. The MoSQuIT app was designed to collect data from the field and was integrated with a web-based platform for data integration and analysis. The MoSQuIT app was deployed on mobile phones of accredited social health activists (ASHA) working in international border villages in the northeast (NE) Indian states of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh for 20 months in a phased manner. This paper shares the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of MoSQuIT for malaria surveillance. MoSQuIT employs the same data entry formats as the NVBDCP's malaria surveillance programme. Using this app, a total of 8221 fever cases were recorded, which included 1192 (14.5%) cases of P. falciparum malaria, 280 (3.4%) cases of P. vivax malaria and 52 (0.6%) mixed infection cases. Depending on network availability, GPS coordinates of the fever cases were acquired by the app. The present study demonstrated that mobile-phone-based malaria surveillance facilitates the quick transmission of data from the field to decision makers. Geospatial tagging of cases helped with easy visualisation of the case distribution for the identification of malaria-prone areas and potential outbreaks, especially in hilly and remote regions of Northeast India. However, to achieve the full operational potential of the system, operational challenges have to be overcome.

Background: Malaria continues to be a major public health problem in the Northeastern part of India despite the implementation of vector control measures and changes in drug policies. To develop successful vaccines against malaria, it is important to assess the diversity of vaccine candidate antigens in field isolates. This study was done to assess the diversity of Plasmodium falciparum AMA-1 vaccine candidate antigen in a malaria-endemic region of Tripura in Northeast India and compare it with previously reported global isolates with a view to assess the feasibility of developing a universal vaccine based on this antigen., Methods: Patients with fever and malaria-like illness were screened for malaria and P. falciparum positive cases were recruited for the current study. The diversity of PfAMA-1 vaccine candidate antigen was evaluated by nested PCR and RFLP. A selected number of samples were sequenced using the Sanger technique., Results: Among 56 P. falciparum positive isolates, Pfama-1 was successfully amplified in 75% (n = 42) isolates. Allele frequencies of PfAMA-1 antigen were 16.6% (n = 7) for 3D7 allele and 33.3% (n = 14) in both K1 and HB3 alleles. DNA sequencing revealed 13 haplotypes in the Pfama-1 gene including three unique haplotypes not reported earlier. No unique amino-acid substitutions were found. Global analysis with 2761 sequences revealed 435 haplotypes with a very complex network composition and few clusters. Nucleotide diversity for Tripura (0.02582 ± 0.00160) showed concordance with South-East Asian isolates while recombination parameter (Rm = 8) was lower than previous reports from India. Population genetic structure showed moderate differentiation., Conclusions: Besides documenting all previously reported allelic forms of the vaccine candidate PfAMA-1 antigen of P. falciparum, new haplotypes not reported earlier, were found in Tripura. Neutrality tests indicate that the Pfama-1 population in Tripura is under balancing selection. This is consistent with global patterns. However, the high haplotype diversity observed in the global Pfama-1 network analysis indicates that designing a universal vaccine based on this antigen may be difficult. This information adds to the existing database of genetic diversity of field isolates of P. falciparum and may be helpful in the development of more effective vaccines against the parasite., (© 2022. Background/objective: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem globally. Northeast India is home to indigenous tribes with different ethnicity and high rates of drug abuse and HIV infection. The study was designed to estimate the burden of HBV infection across various spectrums of liver diseases from this region. HBV genotypes and subgenotypes play a role in the chronicity of disease, response to treatment and its progression. As very limited data are available from this region, we tried to elucidate the role of HBV genotypes, HBV mutants and their phylogenetic analysis., Method: We designed a prospective multicentric study, and included 7464 liver disease cases, 7432 blood donors and 650 health care workers, who were screened for HBV infection. HBV DNA positive patients were genotyped and subjected to surface protein, precore and core mutation and phylogenetic analysis., Results: The prevalence of HBV infection with respect to different types of liver diseases, blood donors and health care workers was 9.9% (1550/15,546). 49.5% (768/1550) cases were found to be HBV DNA positive. The most common genotype was found to be genotype D 74.2% (570/768), followed by genotype C 6.5% (50/768), A 4.4% (34/768) and I 0.9% (7/768)., Conclusion: This study highlights the high hepatitis B burden in Northeast India, reflecting lacunae in health care needs of the region. Also, the different genotype distribution and presence of mutations may translate into different rates of liver disease progression, prognosis and ultimately, clinical significance. The electric field induced motion of a charged water droplet suspended in a low-dielectric oil medium is exploited to evaluate the rheological properties of the suspending medium. The time-periodic electrophoretic motion of the droplet between the electrodes decorated in a polymeric micro-well is translated into a proof-of-concept microfluidic prototype, which can measure viscosities of the unknown fluid samples. The variations in the instantaneous velocities of the migrating droplet have been measured inside silicone oil of known physical properties at different electric field intensities. Subsequently, a balance between the electric field to the viscous force has been employed to evaluate the experimental charge density on the droplet surface. Thereafter, a comprehensive scaling law has been devised to find a correlation between the charge on the droplet to the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding medium, size of the water droplet, and the applied electric field intensity. Following this, the scaling law and force balance have been employed together to evaluate the unknown viscosity of an array of suspending mediums by simply analyzing the electrophoretic motion of water droplet. The model proposed is also found to be consistent when a solid amberlite microparticle has been employed as a probe instead of the water droplet. In such a scenario, minor changes in the exponents of the scaling law are found to be necessary to reproduce the results obtained using the water droplet. Background: The safety of health care workers (HCWs) in Bangladesh and the factors associated with getting COVID-19 have been infrequently studied. The aim of this study was to address this gap by assessing the capacity development and safety measures of HCWs in Bangladesh who have been exposed to COVID-19 and by identifying the factors associated with respondents' self-reported participation in capacity development trainings and their safety practices., Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on an online survey of 811 HCWs working at 39 dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in Bangladesh. A pretested structured questionnaire consisting of questions related to respondents' characteristics, capacity development trainings and safety measures was administered. Binary logistic regressions were run to assess the association between explanatory and dependent variables., Results: Among the respondents, 58.1% had been engaged for at least 2 months in COVID-19 care, with 56.5% of them attending capacity development training on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), 44.1% attending training on hand hygiene, and 35% attending training on respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette. Only 18.1% reported having read COVID-19-related guidelines. Approximately 50% of the respondents claimed that there was an inadequate supply of PPE for hospitals and HCWs. Almost 60% of the respondents feared a high possibility of becoming COVID-19-positive. Compared to physicians, support staff [odds ratio (OR) 4.37, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.25-8.51] and medical technologists (OR 8.77, 95% CI 3.14-24.47) were more exhausted from working in COVID-19 care. Respondents with longer duty rosters were more exhausted, and those who were still receiving infection prevention and control (IPC) trainings were less exhausted (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.34-0.86). Those who read COVID-19 guidelines perceived a lower risk of being infected by COVID-19 (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.29-0.67). Compared to the respondents who strongly agreed that hospitals had a sufficient supply of PPE, others who disagreed (OR 2.68, 95% CI 1.31-5.51) and strongly disagreed (OR 5.05, 95% CI 2.15-11.89) had a higher apprehension of infection by COVID-19., Conclusion: The findings indicated a need for necessary support, including continuous training, a reasonable duty roster, timely diagnosis of patients, and an adequate supply of quality PPE., (© 2021.
