The chance of getting colorectal cancer (CRC) is higher in people with chronic ulcerative colitis (UC). The impact of parasitic infections on UC is underappreciated. The purpose of this study was to look into the effect of intestinal protozoal infections on the dysplastic changes generated by UC. The research included 152 adult patients with histologically confirmed UC and 152 healthy controls. Fecal samples were examined for the presence of parasites and fecal calprotectin (FC). The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measured serum anti-p53 antibodies (p53Abs) and metallothioneins (MTs). The advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were measured by a spectrophotometric method in all subjects. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and IL-6 were also measured. In addition, histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations of intestinal tissue were done. Our results exhibited significant increases in FC and CRP, IL-6, AOPPs, MTs, and p53Abs in ulcerative colitis patients with parasitic infections compared to those without parasites. In contrast, GSH levels showed a significant decrease in the same group compared with other groups. Histopathological and immunohistochemical assessments of intestinal tissue signified severe inflammation and strong expression of PD-L1 in patients with parasitic infections compared to others without parasitic infections. Our research indicated a greater frequency of intestinal protozoa in UC patients with elevated inflammatory and dysplastic biomarker levels. This suggests that these parasites may be involved in the etiology of chronic UC and the associated carcinogenetic process. The inflammatory reaction and pathogenesis of COVID-19 may be modulated by circulating trace elements (Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn)) and Metallothioneins (MTs). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate their relationship with clinical, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters in patients with COVID-19 at the early Intensive Care Unit (ICU) phase. Critically ill patients (n = 86) were monitored from the first day of ICU admission until the third day of stay. Serum samples were used to assess mineral levels via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and MT levels via differential pulse voltammetry. Levels of Cu and MTs were significantly decreased after 3 days (p < 0.05), increasing the prevalence of Cu-deficient values from 50% to 65.3% (p = 0.015). Fe and Zn were shown to have a predictive value for mortality and severity. The present study suggests trace element deficiency may be a risk factor during early ICU treatment of COVID-19, as it is related to different biochemical and clinical parameters, indicating a possible beneficial effect of restoring proper levels of these micronutrients. The fast-growing healthcare demand for user-friendly and affordable analytical tools is driving the efforts to develop reliable platforms for the customization of therapy based on individual health conditions. In this overall scenario, we developed a paper-based electrochemical sensor for the quantification of iron ions in serum as a cost-effective sensing tool for the correct supplement administration. In detail, the working electrode of the screen-printed device has been modified with a nanocomposite constituted of carbon black and gold nanoparticles with a drop-casting procedure. Square wave voltammetry has been adopted as an electrochemical technique. This sensor was further modified with Nafion for iron quantification in serum after sample treatment with trifluoroacetic acid. Under optimized conditions, iron ions have been detected with a LOD down to 0.05 mg/L and a linearity up to 10 mg/L in standard solution. The obtained results have been compared with reference methods namely commercial colorimetric assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy, obtaining a good correlation within the experimental errors. The study aimed to evaluate the prooxidant, antioxidant and biological activities of newly synthesized nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and its combinations with silver and copper by luminescent and microbiological assays. The antimicrobial activity was tested in a liquid medium during 24 h against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The Gram-positive bacteria were more resistant than the Gram-negative. Strongest antibacterial effect was demonstrated by the graphene nanocomposite decorated with silver and copper. The cubic silver nanoclusters size 30 nm showed better bacteriostatic effect than the spherical nanoparticles on reduced graphene sheets with 43 nm diameter. The eukaryotic cell cytotoxicity effect was evaluated with two cell lines—MDCK kidney epithelium noncancerous cells and A549 lung cancerous epithelium cells, tested in cell culture medium for 24 h. Our results showed that RGO Ag:Cu had stronger cytotoxic effect on eukaryotic cells. We have discovered that the cancerous A549 cells show stronger sensitivity to the nanomaterials than the noncancerous MDCK-cells. The pro- and antioxidant activity of all nanomaterials was studied according to the free-radical oxidation reactions (pH 7.4 and pH 8.5) in the following chemiluminescent model systems: (1) chemical, with Fenton's reagent (H2O2-FeSO4), for the generation of hydroxyl radicals (.OH), (2) chemical, with oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), (3) chemical (NAD.H-PhMS), for the generation of superoxide radicals (O2.−). All tested nanomaterials presented definitive antioxidant activity in both tested media at neutral and alkaline pH. The only exception was RGO Ag nanoparticles, sized 30 nm, that exhibited less than 10% prooxidant activity in the Fenton's system, at pH 8.5. A novel heavy metal resistant actinobacterial strain was isolated from an old lead and zinc mine in north-eastern Algeria. This strain was shown to resist high concentrations of heavy metals, including up to 500 ppm arsenic, 700 ppm cadmium, 1750 ppm chromium, 1250 ppm cobalt, 1000 ppm copper, 2750 ppm iron, 2750 ppm lead, 800 ppm mercury, 1750 ppm nickel, and 2750 ppm zinc. In addition, it was able to degrade dyes of the most used families, i.e., triphenylmethane (Malachite Green), azo (Ponceau S), and anthraquinone (Remazol Brilliant Blue R) dyes at 97.79%, 62.93%, and 39.41%, respectively. This bacterium was identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA encoding gene and affiliated to the genus Streptomyces by the RDP Naive Bayesian rDNA Classifier Version 2.11. The genome of Streptomyces sp. KY75 was sequenced using Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore. It was annotated by the MicroScope platform, and gene codings for resistance to heavy metals and dye biodecolorization were identified. It has a single linear chromosome with 7,837,660 bp and a GC content of 71.58%, 7509 of coding sequences (CDS), 66 tRNA genes, 18 rRNA genes, and 11 pseudogenes. The effect of hexavalent chromium on the dye biodegradation in liquid medium was also tested. Surprisingly, the dye biodegradation was not affected by the addition of hexavalent chromium. These observations make the actinobacterial strain Streptomyces sp. KY75 a good candidate for the bioremediation of textile dyeing industry effluents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
