The goal of this work is to investigate the effect of varying phase fractions on the overall spall strength and damage behavior of a material. Specifically, two plain carbon, ferrite–pearlite steels (1045 and A283) were subjected to spall recovery experiments to investigate the effect of pearlite fraction on spall strength and total damage. The A283 (20% pearlite) alloy exhibited a higher Hugoniot elastic limit and spall strength compared with 1045 (60% pearlite). Discontinuous and continuous yielding behaviors were observed at quasi-static and dynamic rates for A283 and 1045, respectively. The yielding behavior was connected to pearlite fraction and the prevalence of dislocation-emitting, ferrite/cementite interfaces. Postmortem characterization revealed cementite lamellae cracking within pearlite of 1045, suggesting that pearlite reduces spall strength by providing low-energy damage nucleation sites. The rate of damage growth and coalescence was similar between the two alloys; however, 1045 exhibited more continuous cracks than A283, which exhibited a greater prevalence of discrete voids. In this work we estimate the yield of the radioisotope 225 A c in a thorium metal target geometry similar to that described by Roberston et al.. We do so in three different yet complimentary studies. In the first study, we pose a three-way coupled time-dependent model describing beam position, temperature field, and local growth of the activity of the radioisotope and solve this numerically. In the second study, we present an analytical solution of the model equations for a generalized solid target in the "beam-thin" limit, i.e. where only a small fraction of the incoming energy of the proton beam is deposited into the thorium material. In the third study, we use the insight gained from the analytical solution and describe an operating strategy to maximize yield by modulating the beam flux temporally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There is a growing interest in understanding the impact of duty hours and resting times on training outcomes and the well-being of resident physicians. However, to this date no state-wide analysis exists in any European country. Objectives: Our aim is to describe the shift work scheduling and to detail the degree of compliance with the Spanish legislation and the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) of Spanish resident physicians, focusing on territorial and specialty distribution. Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional analytical study was designed through an online survey adapted from the existing literature. Results: Out of the 2035 surveyed resident physicians undergoing PGT in Spain, 80.49% exceeded the 48 h per week limit set by the EWTD and 13% of them did not rest after a 24-h on-call shift. The mean number of on-call shifts in the last 3 months was 15.03, with the highest mean reported in Asturias, La Rioja, and Extremadura. 51.6% of respondents had a day-off after a Saturday on-call shift. Significant differences are observed by region and type of specialty. Conclusion: Resident physicians in Spain greatly exceed the established 48 h/week EWTD limit. Likewise, non-compliance with labor regulations regarding mandatory rest after on-call duty and minimum weekly rest periods are observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clogging or jamming of particle suspensions is a ubiquitous problem, hindering the efficiency of particle–liquid and particle–particle separations. Motivated by pressure screening in the pulp and paper industry, we characterize jamming of dilute and semi-dilute mono-disperse rigid-rod suspensions passing through channels mimicking dead-end and cross-flow filtration membranes, experimentally, using particle-tracking velocimetry. We observe that jams nucleate by either bridging of isolated particles across the constriction, or by localized mechanical entanglement of the particles, i.e., flocculation. Uniquely, we observe floc-formation during acceleration into the aperture and report this as primary mechanism for jamming events. We characterized the accumulation-release cycles of the jamming event using an exponential probability distribution; this distribution is indicative of a Poisson process. For jams nucleated by single-particle bridging, the distribution is (primarily) related to the number of fibers passing through the aperture; this is similar to dry, granular materials. For floc-based nucleation events, the distribution is (primarily) related to the suspension concentration with the average time between jams decreasing inversely with the square-root of the initial suspension concentration. Graded metal pushered single shells (PSS) are a viable alternative to low-Z capsules (Z is the atomic number) for indirect drive inertial confinement fusion implosions due to enhanced core tamping and radiation trapping, but they can be compromised by the pusher mixing with the fuel. We compare 2-shock and 3-shock laser pulses for Be/Cr PSS capsules filled with deuterium–tritium gas fuel at 6 mg/cc density. 1D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations predict higher core compression and, hence, ∼2× higher fusion yield for the 3-shock drive than for 2-shock. Nevertheless, we observe similar core ion temperatures and fusion yields for both drives. The implosion burn duration is 25% shorter and the core volume is ∼2.5× smaller for the 3-shock drive than for 2-shock, consistent with a higher compression. 1D LASNEX mix simulations using a buoyancy-drag model matching the measured yields also agree with the observed core sizes and burn durations and suggest ∼40% and ∼70% yield degradations for 2-shock and 3-shock drives due to hydrodynamic instabilities and atomic mix at the pusher–fuel interface. At the same time, 2D HYDRA simulations show that mid-mode (2–250) instability degradations are negligible for the 2-shock implosion (9%) and significant (45%) for 3-shock. Subtracting these from the 1D mix simulations, we infer similar degradations from high-mode instabilities and atomic mix for both drives. Graded metal pushered single shell (PSS) capsules are predicted to be a viable alternative to low-Z capsule indirect drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions for achieving high fusion yields [MacLaren et al., Phys. Plasmas 28, 122710 (2021)]. The first experiments with Be/Cr-graded metal PSS capsules indicate that the implementation of the principle design feature, the graded density inner metal layer, has succeeded in producing a stable implosion with performance in agreement with predictions. With 50% Cr concentration in the pusher, PSS capsules have greater than ∼2× higher shell densities during stagnation for enhanced core confinement and radiation trapping at ∼35% lower shell implosion velocities than low-Z capsules. High-energy >30 keV inflight shell radiography recorded 215 km/s implosion velocities and show that implosion Legendre mode P2 asymmetry can be tuned via inner-to-outer beam wavelength separation, similar to other implosions. Shell radiographs and neutron core images show similar P2 asymmetry, suggesting no symmetry swings between peak implosion velocity and stagnation times. Despite the modest implosion velocities, gas-filled deuterium–tritium capsule implosions generate 1015 neutron yields at relatively modest core ion temperatures of 2.75 keV, indicating that in spite of the high-density inner layer, the implosions have been stabilized by the design density gradient. When compared with hydrodynamic simulations, the measured yield-over-simulated is 35% due to fuel–pusher mix and other perturbations such as the capsule fill tube. Simple analytical scalings of hot spot pressure and neutron yield show that PSS implosions reach similar performance at lower implosion velocities and higher shell densities to low-Z ICF capsules. In the Double Shell Inertial Confinement Fusion concept, characterizing the shape asymmetry of imploding metal shells is vital for understanding energy-efficient compression and radiative losses of the thermonuclear fuel. The Monte Carlo N-Particle MCNP® code forward models radiography of Double Shell capsule implosions using the Advanced Radiographic Capability at the National Ignition Facility. A procedure is developed for using MCNP to reconstruct density profiles from the radiograph image intensity. For a given Double Shell imploding target geometry, MCNP radiographs predict image contrast, which can help guide experimental design. In future work, the calculated MCNP synthetic radiographs will be compared with experimental radiographs to determine the radial and azimuthal density profiles of the Double Shell capsules. Plastic deformation of samples compressed to Mbar pressures at high strain rates at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) forms the basis of ongoing material strength experiments in conditions relevant to meteor impacts, geophysics, armor development, and inertial confinement fusion. Hard x-ray radiography is the primary means of measuring the evolution of these samples, typically employing a slit-collimated high-Z microdot driven by the NIF laser to generate > 40 keV x rays [E. Gumbrell et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 89, 10G118 (2018) and C. M. Huntington et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 89, 10G121 (2018)]. Alternatively, a dysprosium "micro-flag" target driven by the Advanced Radiographic Capability laser (∼ 2 kJ, 10 ps) can deliver significantly higher spatiotemporal resolution [M. P. Hill et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 92, 033535 (2021)], especially in high-opacity samples. Initial experiments revealed problematic brightness and spectral gradients from this source, but by radiographing a set of diamond-turned, 105 µm-thick Pb test objects and supported by simulations using the 3D Monte Carlo code GEANT4, these geometry-dependent gradients across the field of view are quantified and mitigation strategies are assessed. In addition to significantly enhancing the modulation transfer function compared to the existing system, image stacking from multiple layers of image plate is shown to almost double the signal to noise ratio that will reduce uncertainties in future dynamic strength experiments. In inertial confinement fusion, the threshold for ignition is a highly dynamic quantity as the sources and sinks of power in the hot spot can vary rapidly. In this article, we consider the ignition condition as a race between heating and disassembly rates and make use of a prior solution to the fusion hot-spot thermodynamics to develop a Lawson-like ignition criteria for pressure × confinement time (p-τ) vs temperature. Low-Z capsule designs reach the temperature for this threshold using as much of the shell as feasible as ablator but then are limited in τ by low stagnated mass. An alternate approach, the pushered single shell (PSS) design [D. D.-M. Ho, S. MacLaren, and Y. Wang, "High-yield implosions via radiation trapping and high rho-R," paper presented at the 60th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics, 2018], introduces a dense inner layer of Mo-Be alloy that is smoothly graded outward to pure Be, increasing the confinement time at stagnation and lowering the temperature requirement at the ignition threshold. Here, we describe a PSS ignition design for the National Ignition Facility and use the theory as well as simulations to compare it with the low-Z capsule approach. Compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) cone targets have been shown to produce increased MeV photons on the NIF-ARC by 10× over flat targets. Multiple x-ray frames can potentially be generated by firing the NIF-ARC's beamlets into distinct cone targets at few nanosecond relative delays. This requires that the cone targets with delayed beams are not degraded by their proximity to previous targets. One concern is that the spatial wings of a beam fired into one target can fall on neighboring targets, producing a preformed plasma that may interfere with laser light reaching the tip of the cone. In this work, 3D hydra simulations of realistic targets and beam parameters show that hundreds of micrometer scale length preplasmas are produced in cones within 1 mm of the laser spot. 2D particle-in-cell simulations of the intense main pulse in this preplasma indicate a density threshold for the onset of relativistic filamentation in our conditions. Applying our modeling approach to a NIF-ARC shot with an intentional 15 J prepulse yields good agreement with experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A collection of 10 high-impact extreme precipitation events occurring in Southeastern South America during the warm season has been analyzed using statistical (ESD) and dynamical downscaling approaches. Regional Climate Models from the CORDEX database for the South American domain at two horizontal resolutions, 50 km and 25 km, short-term simulations at 20 km and at 4 km convective-permitting resolution and statistical downscaling techniques based on the analogue method and the generalized linear model approach were evaluated. The analysis includes observational datasets based on gridded data, station data and satellite products that allow assessing the observational uncertainty that characterizes extreme events in the region. It is found that the ability of the modelling strategies in capturing the main features of the extreme rainfall varies across the events. The higher the horizontal resolution of the models, the more intense and localized the core of the rainfall event, being the location of the exit region of the low-level jet and the low-level moisture flux convergence during the initial stages of the events the most relevant features that determine models' ability of capturing the location and intensity of the core of the heavy rainfall. ESD models based on the generalized linear approach overestimate the spatial extension of the events and underestimate the intensity of the local maxima. Weather-like convective-permitting simulations depict an overall good performance in reproducing both the rainfall patterns and the triggering mechanisms of the extreme events as expected, given that these simulations are strongly controlled by the initial conditions. An experimental and computational investigation of the internal flow of elastoviscoplastic fluids over non-smooth topologies is presented in two complimentary studies. In the first study, we visualize the creeping flow of a Carbopol gel over a cavity embedded in a thin slot using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and confocal microscopy. We measure the size and shape of the plug as a function of Bingham and Weissenberg numbers. An asymmetry in the plug shape is observed which is also evident in our second study—numerical simulations using adaptive finite element method based upon an augmented Lagrangian scheme. We quantify the asymmetry and present the results as a function of the product of the Weissenberg and Bingham numbers which collapse onto a single curve for each of these geometries. Understanding water absorbency in paper is challenging as fibre swelling and out-of-plane deformation occur simultaneously during liquid imbibition. Liquid absorption is commonly accessed by gravimetric tests, which provides limited information on the local spatial and temporal distribution of fluid in the substrate. In this work, we developed iron tracers to map liquid imbibition in paper by in situ precipitation of iron oxide nanoparticles during passage of the wetting front. The iron oxide tracers were found to be robustly attached to the cellulosic fibres. After liquid absorption tests, absorbency was investigated by mapping the distribution of iron in 3D using X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) and in 2D using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. We demonstrate a difference in tracer distribution between the wetting front and the fully saturated region supporting that imbibition proceeds in two phases, i.e. liquid percolation through the cell wall initially prior to filling of the external pore spaces.
