In this study, we experimentally evaluate the ion transportation through a cone guide target, which accelerates ions up to MeV energies via target normal sheath acceleration, and transports them onto the position of imploding fuel in the fast ignition scenario of nuclear fusion. We measured the electric and magnetic fields (EM-fields) induced by return current streaming along the cone wall by proton radiography, and we report that the EM-fields are predominantly induced within a temporal window up to 30 ps after the laser injection. The magnitude of the electric field is maximized around 13 ps, reaching $4.0\times 10^{10} \mathrm {V}\ \mathrm {m}^{-1}$ , when the magnetic field is below 200 T. The present scheme provides insights on the EM-fields evaluation in the time region that is difficult to treat with simulations due to the computing resources.

Astrophysical jets are ubiquitous in the universe and often associated with compact objects, and their interactions with the ambient medium not only dissipate their own energy but also provide ideal circumstances for particle acceleration. By means of theoretical analysis and particle-in-cell simulations, here we study the ion acoustic shock wave (IASW) formation and consequent ion acceleration when electron–positron (e − e +) jets are injected into ambient electron–ion plasmas. It is found that the Buneman instability can be excited first, which induces the formation of an ion acoustic wave (IAW). As the amplitude of the IAW increases, its waveform is steepened and subsequently an IASW is formed. Some ions in the ambient plasmas will be reflected when they encounter the IASW, and thus can be accelerated to form an energetic ion beam. For an initial e − e + jet with the Lorentz factor γ 0 = 100 and the ion–electron mass ratio m i /m e = 1836, the ions can be accelerated up to 580 MeV. This study deepens our understanding of the fireball model of gamma-ray bursts, the shock model of pulsar wind nebulae, the origin of cosmic rays, and other related astrophysical processes.

Spontaneous magnetic field generation plays important role in laser-plasma interactions. Strong quasi-static magnetic fields affect the thermal conductivity and the plasma dynamics, particularly in the case of ultra intense laser where the magnetic part of Lorentz force becomes as significant as the electric part. Kinetic simulations of giga-gauss magnetic field amplification via a laser irradiated microtube structure reveal the dynamics of charged particle implosions and the mechanism of magnetic field growth. A giga-gauss magnetic field is generated and amplified with the opposite polarity to the seed magnetic field. The spot size of the field is comparable to the laser wavelength, and the lifetime is hundreds of femtoseconds. An analytical model is presented to explain the underlying physics. This study should aid in designing future experiments.

A target using a paisley pattern generates 100-kT-level magnetic fields. Laser irradiation induces local charge separation on the target, which creates surface currents along the concave surface, generating a magnetic field. For a laser intensity of [Formula: see text], the target generates a 150-kT magnetic field. We developed a simple model to describe the magnetic field as a function of the laser intensity and target radius. A double paisley configuration extends the lifetime of the magnetic field to the picosecond scale. The paisley design generates comparable results even if it is simplified. Thus, it is a robust and modular target suitable for magnetic field applications such as 100-kT magnetic field generation and magnetic reconnection.
