Abstract

This white paper summarizes the Workshop on Polarized Target Studies with Real Photons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab, that took place on 21 February 2024. The Workshop included about 45 participants both online and in person at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Contributions describe the experimental infrastructure available in Hall D and potential physics applications. The rate and detection capabilities of Hall D are outlined, as well as the properties of a circularly polarized photon beam and a polarized target. Possible physics measurements include light and strange quark baryon spectroscopy, the GDH sum rule, proton structure accessed through measurement of Generalized Parton Distributions and modification of nucleon structure within the nuclear medium., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The structure of hadronic form factors at high energies and their deviations from perturbative quantum chromodynamics provide insight on nonperturbative dynamics. Using an approach that is consistent with dispersion relations, we construct a model that simultaneously accounts for the pion wave function, gluonic exchanges, and quark Reggeization. In particular, we find that quark Reggeization can be investigated at high energies by studying scaling violation of the form factor.

Abstract

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of $XYZ$ states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the $\chi_{c1}(1P)$ and $X(3872)$, whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of Vector Meson Dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near threshold to be enhanced by a factor of $\sim 2-3$ compared to the exclusive reaction and well suited for a first observation in photoproduction., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

We describe the formalism to analyze the mathematical ambiguities arising in partial-wave analysis of two spinless mesons produced with a linearly polarized photon beam. We show that partial waves are uniquely defined when all accessible observables are considered, for a wave set which includes $S$ and $D$ waves. The inclusion of higher partial waves does not affect our results, and we conclude that there are no mathematical ambiguities in partial-wave analysis of two mesons produced with a linearly polarized photon beam. Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. 6. Dynamics in near-threshold $J/\psi$ photoproduction

Abstract

The study of $J/\psi$ photoproduction at low energies has consequences for the understanding of multiple aspects of nonperturbative QCD, ranging from mechanical properties of the proton, to the binding inside nuclei, and the existence of hidden-charm pentaquarks. Factorization of the photon-$c \bar c$ and nucleon dynamics or Vector Meson Dominance are often invoked to justify these studies. Alternatively, open charm intermediate states have been proposed as the dominant mechanism underlying $J/\psi$ photoproduction. As the latter violates this factorization, it is important to estimate the relevance of such contributions. We analyse the latest differential and integrated photoproduction cross sections from the GlueX and $J/\psi$-007 experiments. We show that the data can be adequately described by a small number of partial waves, which we parameterize with generic models enforcing low-energy unitarity. The results suggest a nonnegligible contribution from open charm intermediate states. Furthermore, most of the models present an elastic scattering length incompatible with previous extractions based on Vector Meson Dominance, and thus call into question its applicability to heavy mesons. Abstract

We study the decay $J/\psi\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ within the framework of the Khuri-Treiman equations. We find that the BESIII experimental di-pion mass distribution in the $\rho(770)$-region is well reproduced with a once-subtracted $P$-wave amplitude. Furthermore, we show that $F$-wave contributions to the amplitude improve the description of the data in the $\pi\pi$ mass region around 1.5 GeV. Abstract

Semi-inclusive processes are very promising to investigate $XYZ$ hadrons at the next generation of electron-hadron facilities, because they generally boast higher cross sections. We extend our formalism of exclusive photoproduction to semi-inclusive final states. The inclusive production cross sections for charged axial-vector $Z$ states from pion exchange are predicted. We isolate the contribution of $\Delta$ resonances at small missing mass. Production near threshold is shown to be enhanced roughly by a factor of two compared to the exclusive reaction. Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome is associated with formation of calcium oxalate (CaOx) uroliths in humans. Objectives To investigate the association between obesity and hyperlipidemia with CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths in client‐owned dogs. Animals Dogs with (n = 55, U [uroliths]‐dogs) and without (n = 39, UF [uroliths‐free]‐dogs) CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths. Methods Case‐control study. U‐dogs were retrospectively enrolled and compared to UF‐dogs. 18. Case report: Hypoadrenocorticism crisis complicated by non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema in a dog

Abstract

A 6-year-old castrated male Labradoodle was referred in uncompensated hypovolemic shock, with a 72-h history of lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea that had acutely worsened with subsequent development of profuse hemorrhagic diarrhea in the last 24 h after a visit to the groomer. In most respects this case was classic for a patient with a primary hypoadrenocortical crisis. After initial attempts to address hypovolemia and refractory hypotension, no clinical improvement was seen, and the respiratory rate had increased acutely to 80 bpm with crackles detected on thoracic auscultation and serosanguineous fluid began draining from the nose and mouth. An arterial blood gas sample while breathing room air revealed moderate hypoxemia (PaO2 59.9: RI 95–100 mmHg), an elevated alveolar-arterial (A-a) gradient at 54.7 (RI < 15 mmHg) and a PaO2:FiO2 ratio of 285 mmHg. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe bilateral alveolar lung pattern largely limited to the perihilar and caudodorsal lung fields. The radiographic findings, along with signs of ongoing hypovolemia, the lack of evidence of typical long-standing acquired cardiac disease, and the rapid resolution of the pulmonary edema without the need for diuretics or long-term cardiac medications supported non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. The proposed cause of the non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema was speculated to be neurogenically mediated. Oxygen supplementation along with mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid replacement therapy was sufficient for the management of the non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema in this case.

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of $XYZ$ states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the $\chi_{c1}(1P)$ and $X(3872)$, whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of Vector Meson Dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near threshold to be enhanced by a factor of $\sim 2-3$ compared to the exclusive reaction and well suited for a first observation in photoproduction., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The study of $J/\psi$ photoproduction at low energies has consequences for the understanding of multiple aspects of nonperturbative QCD, ranging from mechanical properties of the proton, to the binding inside nuclei, and the existence of hidden-charm pentaquarks. Factorization of the photon-$c \bar c$ and nucleon dynamics or Vector Meson Dominance are often invoked to justify these studies. Alternatively, open charm intermediate states have been proposed as the dominant mechanism underlying $J/\psi$ photoproduction. As the latter violates this factorization, it is important to estimate the relevance of such contributions. We analyse the latest differential and integrated photoproduction cross sections from the GlueX and $J/\psi$-007 experiments. We show that the data can be adequately described by a small number of partial waves, which we parameterize with generic models enforcing low-energy unitarity. The results suggest a nonnegligible contribution from open charm intermediate states. Furthermore, most of the models present an elastic scattering length incompatible with previous extractions based on Vector Meson Dominance, and thus call into question its applicability to heavy mesons. 28. Online survey to determine client perceptions of feline chronic lower airway disease management: response to therapy, side effects and challenges encountered

Abstract

Objectives The first aim of this survey was to report client experiences associated with the administration of common medications, particularly glucocorticoids and bronchodilators, in managing cats with feline lower airway disease (FLAD). The second aim was to ascertain client perception of response to treatment and level of satisfaction. Methods This was a prospective cross-sectional study. An online survey was distributed worldwide to cat owners caring for cats with a chronic cough. Only cats reported to have FLAD were included. Results A total of 153 complete responses describing cats with FLAD were analyzed. Glucocorticoids and bronchodilators were the predominantly prescribed therapeutics for 140/153 (92%) and 80/153 (52%) of FLAD cats, respectively. Oral and inhalant administration routes were reported most commonly: glucocorticoids (64% oral and 75% inhalant) and bronchodilators (21% oral and 88% inhalant). A review of how air quality could be improved was conducted for 54% of cats. Almost half (43%) of owners reported adverse effects secondary to glucocorticoid administration, the most frequent being polyphagia (26%) and polydipsia (21%). Only 10% of owners reported bronchodilator-associated side effects, with restlessness (9%) being the most common. Difficulties giving glucocorticoid or bronchodilator tablets orally were reported for 33% and 71% of owners, respectively. Glucocorticoid or bronchodilator inhalant therapies were difficult to administer for 28% and 31% of owners, respectively. Frequency and severity of coughing were significantly lower after at least 2 months of treatment, with median numerical input on a slider scale (0–100) of 48 and 42 before, and 10 and 7 after treatment, respectively ( P Conclusions and relevance Despite significant improvements in client-reported responses to treatment, challenges associated with the administration of medications and their adverse effects still exist. Promoting awareness of client experiences can facilitate appropriate follow-up, guidance and empathy to further optimize outcomes.

Abstract

In humans, post-traumatic hypopituitarism (PTHP) is a common complication of traumatic brain injury, with the most frequently reported hormonal deficiencies resulting in hyposomatotropism and hypogonadism, followed by hypothyroidism, hypocortisolism, and central diabetes insipidus. To date, PTHP has rarely been reported in cats, and the reported cases often describe a single hormone deficiency. This report details an approximately 7-month-old cat with a history of suspected traumatic brain injury at 5 wk of age, that presented with growth retardation (1.53 kg) and polyuria-polydipsia. Thyroid panel, thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation test, thyroid scan with Technetium-99, repeat measurement of serum IGF-1, resting cortisol, endogenous ACTH concentration, and ACTH stimulation testing were performed. The cat was diagnosed with presumptive PTHP leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism. In this case, treatment of the hypothyroidism and central diabetes insipidus were successful. Hyposomatotropism and hypogonadism were not treated. Although reported feline PTHP cases have described a single hormone deficiency, this report details a cat with presumptive PTHP leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism. Attention should be paid to the potential for the development of PTHP in cats secondary to traumatic brain injury. Key clinical message: Post-traumatic hypopituitarism in cats can lead to multiple hormone deficiencies, leading to hyposomatotropism, hypothyroidism, central diabetes insipidus, and hypogonadism.

Abstract

We study the decay $J/ψ\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ within the framework of the Khuri-Treiman equations. We find that the BESIII experimental di-pion mass distribution in the $ρ(770)$-region is well reproduced with a once-subtracted $P$-wave amplitude. Furthermore, we show that $F$-wave contributions to the amplitude improve the description of the data in the $ππ$ mass region around 1.5 GeV. Abstract

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter, 902 pages, 415 authors, 151 institutions

The measurement was performed\ud as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized\ud photon beam with Eγ = 8.2 GeV–8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon\ud energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t − t0). We compare\ud the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are\ud dominant in Λ(1520) photoproduction.

We perform the first amplitude analysis of experimental data using deep neural networks to determine the nature of an exotic hadron. Specifically, we study the line shape of the P c ( 4312 ) signal reported by the LHCb collaboration, and we find that its most likely interpretation is that of a virtual state. Objectives: To investigate the association between obesity and hyperlipidemia with CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths in client‐owned dogs. Animals Dogs with (n = 55, U [uroliths]‐dogs) and without (n = 39, UF [uroliths‐free]‐dogs) CaOx lower urinary tract uroliths. Methods: Case‐control study. U‐dogs were retrospectively enrolled and compared to UF‐dogs. Body condition score (BCS; 1‐9 scoring scale), serum triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (CH) concentrations and glycemia (after >12‐hour food withholding) were recorded in both groups. Results: On univariate logistic regression, when excluding Miniature Schnauzers, odds of having uroliths increased by a factor of 3.32 (95% CI 1.38‐11.12) for each mmol/L of TG (P =.027), of 39 (95% CI 9.27‐293.22) for each mmol/L of glycemia (P <.0001), and of 2.43 (95% CI 1.45‐4.45) per unit of BCS (P =.002). In multivariable models, the effect of TG was retained when all breeds were included for analysis and odds of having uroliths increased by a factor of 4.34 per mmol/L of TG (95% CI 1.45‐19.99; P =.02). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Serum lipid screening in dogs diagnosed with CaOx uroliths might be recommended to improve their medical staging and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

For a large organization to successfully complete a complex project, many constituent tasks must all be successfully completed. A typical such task can be completed only if several other, tailored input tasks are completed. Thus a complex project, such as designing a new product and bringing it to market, requires many collaborations among workers to succeed, both within and across business units. Some collaborations succeed, while others fail. Corporate culture---a broad notion that entails many aspects of the working environment---supports collaborations by establishing norms and reducing miscommunications or misunderstandings. However, the strength of a corporate culture is endogneous. Individual actions of workers that run counter to it undermine it and adhering to the corporate culture in a given situation can be costly to a worker. Because a strong corporate culture relies on costly, voluntary investments by many workers, we model it as an organizational public good, subject to standard free-riding problems, which become severe in large organizations. Indeed, a standard analysis would suggest that workers' incentives to make voluntary contributions to the corporate culture vanish as an organization becomes large, because their marginal impact becomes negligible while their marginal cost does not. This raises an important question: Why do workers exert voluntary effort to enhance the corporate cultures of large organizations? We propose a perspective on this question based on a network model of complex production within a large organization: The productive activity of the organization occurs via the completion of tasks, where a given worker in charge of a task relies on the completion of several types of essential subtasks, which are incorporated into the task via collaborations with other workers. We find that voluntary contributions to culture can be sustained, because an organization's equilibrium productivity is endogenously highly sensitive to individual contributions. This implies a new mechanism generating incentives for voluntary, decentralized investment in culture even as an organization becomes large and the free-rider problem becomes severe: the marginal impact of contributions becomes large enough to compensate. Abstract

Study Objective: While the laparoscopic approach is the surgical treatment of choice for ectopic pregnancy, vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES) is emerging as an alternative route with its good optical visibility and avoidance of abdominal incisions. The authors compare demographics and outcome data of vNOTES vs conventional laparoscopic (CL) salpingectomy for the surgical management of ectopic pregnancy., Design: Case-control study., Setting: A London University hospital., Patients: Women with ectopic pregnancy unsuitable for medical management who underwent surgical management., Intervention: Twenty-five cases of vNOTES vs 25 CL salpingectomy., Measurements and Main Results: The mean patient age (29.7 ± 53 vs 31.4 ± 6.7 days), parity (1.2 ± 1.1 vs 1.6 ± 2.1), body mass index (26.7 ± 5.3 vs 27.2 ± 5.4 kg/m 3 ), gestation age (8.44 ± 2.1 vs 7.3 ± 1.7 weeks) and β human chorionic gonadotrophin (βhCG) levels (3725.4 ± 3674.8 vs 4376.5 ± 6493.4 IU/liter) were comparable (p >.05, t test) between patients having vNOTES vs CL salpingectomy. While estimated blood loss was similar (218.2 ± 491.7 vs 173.5 ± 138.7 mL) (p >.001), vNOTES patients had a statistically shorter duration of surgery (35.8 ± 14.4 vs 75.8 ± 19.7 mins) (p <.001, t test) and length of stay (median: 11.5 vs 19.7 hours) (U = 72, p <.05, Mann-Whitney U test). Less patients in the vNOTES group required postoperative opioids (9% vs 25%), and the median visual analog score (/10) for pain at 24 hours was significantly lower (2.0 vs 4.0) (U = 75, p <.05, Mann-Whitney U test). Patients from the vNOTES group were able to return to normal daily activity 11.3 days quicker (5.8 ± 4.3 vs 17.1 ± 8.2 days) (p <.05, t test). vNOTES cases cost approximately USD150 more due to the price of the commercial kits but this is offset by reduced intraoperative time, length of stay and need for postprocedure analgesia., Conclusion: Patients undergoing vNOTES have shorter intraoperative times and length of stays, less postoperative pain, and more rapid recovery, which help mitigate higher costs incurred by commercial kits.
