1. An efficient two-dimensional heat transfer model for building envelopes

Abstract

A two-dimensional model is proposed for energy efficiency assessment through the simulation of heat transfer in building envelopes, considering the influence of the surrounding environment. The model is based on the \DF ~approach that provides an explicit scheme with a relaxed stability condition. The model is first validated using an analytical solution and then compared to three other standard schemes. Results show that the proposed model offers a good compromise in terms of high accuracy and reduced computational efforts. Then, a more complex case study is investigated, considering non-uniform shading effects due to the neighboring buildings. In addition, the surface heat transfer coefficient varies with wind velocity and height, which imposes an addition non-uniform boundary condition. After showing the reliability of the model prediction, a comparison over almost $120$ cities in France is carried out between the two- and the one-dimensional approaches of the current building simulation programs. Important discrepancies are observed for regions with high magnitudes of solar radiation and wind velocity. Last, a sensitivity analysis is carried out using a derivative-based approach. It enables to assess the variability of the solution according to the modeling of the two-dimensional boundary conditions. Moreover, the proposed model computes efficiently the solution and its sensitivity to the modeling of the urban environment.

Abstract

Summer mortality of Crassostrea gigas occurs in Brazilian crops, with predominance in the final phase of cultivation, when they reach the commercial size, generating significant losses for local producers. In order to mitigate this problem, a technical solution, whose principle is based on long-term confinement at low temperatures (10 −12°C) for inducing a similar basal metabolism regime, has been developed. According to the current literature, if the spawning process is not triggered, a substantial reduction in the mortality rate can be achieved. This work evaluates not only the effectiveness of this technological solution to reduce summer mortality but also the quality associated to commercial attributes of the oysters as a final product. A ninety-one day experiment has been carried out and has shown that the proposed solution is able to maintain Crassostrea gigas diploid oysters alive and healthy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, the spectral method is developed as a reduced-order model for the solution of parametric problems within the building refurbishment framework. We propose to use the spectral reduced-order method to solve parametric problems in an innovative way, integrating the unknown parameter as one of the coordinates of the decomposition. The residual is minimized combining the Tau–Galerkin method with the Collocation approach. The developed method is evaluated in terms of accuracy and reduction of the computational time in three different cases. The dynamic behaviour of unidimensional moisture diffusion is investigated. The cases focus on solving parametric problems in which the solution depends on space, time, diffusivity and material thickness. Results highlight that the parametric spectral reduced-order method provides accurate solutions and can reduce 10 times the degree of freedom of the solution. It allows efficient computation of the physical phenomena with a lower error when compared to traditional approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Knowing the ground state energies of molecules and atoms gives scientists critical insight into these particles' behavior in reactions, thermodynamic and molecular properties, and excitation energies. However, due to the quantum mechanical nature of particles, finding the ground state of a system is intractable, both mathematically and experimentally. Computational methods are utilized to estimate the ground state energies. As we approach the limits of classical computers, quantum computers are viewed as promising alternatives that present a bright future for computational chemistry. In this paper, I review classical and quantum algorithms/methods for computational chemistry. Then, I discuss the current topics in using quantum computers for computational chemistry by analyzing the performance of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) in different contexts on IBM's noisy quantum computer simulator, "QasmSimulator," and one of IBM's quantum computers, ibmq_belem. This review presents a theoretical and practical view of quantum computational chemistry. It allows the reader to learn the theory behind the algorithms and implement them with the guidance of the presented code and its detailed explanations. 18. Gate-based quantum computing for protein design.

Abstract

Protein design is a technique to engineer proteins by permuting amino acids in the sequence to obtain novel functionalities. However, exploring all possible combinations of amino acids is generally impossible due to the exponential growth of possibilities with the number of designable sites. The present work introduces circuits implementing a pure quantum approach, Grover's algorithm, to solve protein design problems. Our algorithms can adjust to implement any custom pair-wise energy tables and protein structure models. Moreover, the algorithm's oracle is designed to consist of only adder functions. Quantum computer simulators validate the practicality of our circuits, containing up to 234 qubits. However, a smaller circuit is implemented on real quantum devices. Our results show that using O(N) iterations, the circuits find the correct results among all N possibilities, providing the expected quadratic speed up of Grover's algorithm over classical methods (i.e., O(N)). Author summary: Protein design aims to create novel proteins or enhance the functionality of existing proteins by tweaking their sequences through permuting amino acids. The number of possible configurations, N, grows exponentially as a function of the number of designable sites (s), i.e., N = As, where A is the number of different amino acids (A = 20 for canonical amino acids). The classical computation methods require O(N)) queries to search and find the low-energy configurations among N possible sequences. Searching among these possibilities becomes unattainable for large proteins, forcing the classical approaches to use sampling methods. Alternatively, quantum computing can promise quadratic speed-up in searching for answers in an unorganized list by employing Grover's algorithm. Our work shows the implementation of this algorithm at the circuit level to solve protein design problems. We first focus on lattice model-like systems and then improve them to more realistic models (change in the energy as a function of distances). Our algorithms can implement various custom pair-wise energy tables and any protein structure models. We have used quantum computer simulators to validate the practicality of our circuits which require up to 234 qubits. 19. Diabetic Macular Edema Screened by Handheld Smartphone-based Retinal Camera and Artificial Intelligence.

Abstract

Our aim was to assess the tomographic presence of diabetic macular edema in type 2 diabetes patients screened for diabetic retinopathy with color fundus photographs and an artificial intelligence algorithm. Color fundus photographs obtained with a low-cost smartphone-based handheld retinal camera were analyzed by the algorithm; patients with suspected macular lesions underwent ocular coherence tomography. A total of 366 patients were screened; diabetic macular edema was suspected in 34 and confirmed in 29 individuals, with average age 60.5 ± 10.9 years and glycated hemoglobin 9.8 ± 2.4%; use of insulin, statins, and aspirin were reported in 44.8%, 37.9%, and 34.5% of individuals, respectively; systemic blood hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, chronic kidney disease, and risk for diabetic foot ulcers were present in 100%, 58.6%, 62.1%, 48.3%, and 27.5% of individuals, respectively. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy was present in 31% of patients with macular edema; severity level was associated with albuminuria (p = 0.028). Eyes with macular edema had average central macular thickness 329.89 ± 80.98 m μ ; intraretinal cysts, sub retinal fluid, hyper-reflective foci, epiretinal membrane, and vitreomacular traction were found in 87.2%, 6.4%, 85.1%, 10.6%, and 6.4% of eyes, respectively. Diabetic retinopathy screening overwhelms health systems and is typically based on color fundus photographs, with high false-positive rates for the detection of diabetic macular edema. The present, semi-automated strategy comprising artificial intelligence algorithms integrated with smartphone-based retinal cameras could improve screening in low-resource settings with limited availability of ocular coherence tomography, allowing increased access rates and ultimately contributing to tackle preventable blindness. 21. O licenciamento dos direitos de propriedade intelectual com as MPEs a partir da lei de inovação : o caso da PUC-Rio e UFRJ

Abstract

O presente estudo tem como objetivo discutir o processo de transferência de tecnologia das Instituições Científicas e Tecnológicas para as micro e pequenas empresas locais, por meio dos licenciamentos dos ativos de propriedade intelectual formalizados a partir da publicação da lei da inovação. O método utilizado na pesquisa é o estudo de caso. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de aplicação de questionário junto às equipes dos Núcleos de Inovação Tecnológica da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro e da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Os resultados dos estudos de caso demonstraram que as universidades pesquisadas apresentaram, após a lei de inovação, bons resultados relativos à proteção do conhecimento, conforme quantitativo de pedidos de patentes, marcas, desenho industrial e programas de computador depositados no Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial, no entanto, essas universidades lograram pouco êxito em comercializar os produtos e processos protegidos.
