4. English as a Foreign Language Teaching Approaches in Saudi K-12 Education: Teacher-Centered or Student-Centered

- Abstract
This study explores the educational methodologies employed by Saudi English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher, with a specific emphasis on contrasting teacher-centered approaches and student-centered approaches. Additionally, the research examines the teachers' personal beliefs regarding the most effective approach for implementation in EFL classrooms. To gather data, an online questionnaire was administered to 42 EFL teachers across Saudi K-12 schools in the Southern part of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised two sections: a demographic information segment and an inquiry into teachers' perspectives and practices. The results of the study showed a dichotomy. While a majority of participants professed that both teacher-centered and student-centered methodologies carry equal importance, a more nuanced picture emerged when examining their claimed practices versus actual classroom behavior. The majority of EFL K-12 instructors in Saudi classrooms leaned toward adopting teacher-centered approaches. These findings hold significant implications for EFL teacher training and professional development courses. This may be due to teachers' lack of confidence in implementing student-centered approaches, the traditional educational culture in Saudi Arabia, or pressure to prepare students for high-stakes exams. The study suggests that teacher education programs should focus on developing teachers' understanding and confidence in using student-centered approaches and that the Ministry of Education should create a more supportive environment for student-centered teaching approaches.

6. African Academics in Norway: Experiences of Inclusion and Exclusion and Impact on Mental Wellbeing

- Abstract
This study explored the experiences of inclusion and exclusion of African academics in Norway in various sectors of the society and their participation in these sectors. Using a mixed method research approach, 166 African academics completed a 20-item questionnaire entitled Perceived Exclusion Scale (PES) and two open-ended questions about their mental effects and coping mechanisms of exclusion. Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis procedures were used to analyze the data. The results showed that the participants experienced exclusion in almost all the sectors of the Norwegian society with concomitant effects of depression and insomnia for most of the participants. Participants mentioned acceptance, confrontational strategy, avoidance strategy, theological group discussion and positive attitudes as key coping mechanisms to exclusion and discrimination. This study could be used as a baseline for future research on the psychological and mental health effects of discrimination of Africans and African-Norwegians. The study is a pointer to the public discourses on the positive sides of immigration in general and the role of migrants' contribution to the Norwegian society.

7. Exploring Complex Biological Processes through Artificial Intelligence

- Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is now affecting all aspects of our social lives. Without always knowing it, we interact daily with intelligent systems. They serve us invisibly. At least that is the goal we assign to them: to make our lives better, task by task. Artificial intelligence has the potential to make biology education more engaging, personalized, and effective by providing students with interactive simulations, personalized learning experiences, and other tools that help them understand complex biological concepts. In this paper, we discuss the integration of AI into the virtual classroom, which significantly enhances student learning experiences in various ways. The study shows that an effective integration of technology into the virtual classroom requires a thoughtful approach that aligns with educational goals and the specific needs of students. In fact, interactive simulations can help make biology more engaging and memorable for students. Besides, personalized learning AI algorithms can help biology students receive a more tailored and effective learning experience, helping them to better understand the course material and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. In this work, we will discuss the use of AI to enhance interactive simulation-based cellular processes, with additional application in anatomy, physiology, and ecology teaching. Moreover, this paper discusses how AI could be used to analyze student data and propose personalized learning using adaptive assessments, content recommendations, and data sciences. This paper illustrates examples of AI algorithms that could be useful for teaching biology.

8. Coexistence via trophic cascade in plant-herbivore-carnivore systems under intense predation pressure

Carnivores interact with herbivores to indirectly impact plant populations, creating trophic cascades within plant-herbivore-carnivore systems. We developed and analyzed a food chain model to gain a mechanistic understanding of the critical roles carnivores play in ecosystems where plants face intense herbivory. Our model incorporates key factors such as seed production rates, seed germination probabilities, local plant interactions, herbivory rates, and carnivore predation rates. In the absence of carnivores, herbivores significantly reduce plant densities, often driving plants to extinction under high herbivory rates. However, the presence of carnivores suppresses herbivore populations, allowing plants to recover from herbivore pressure. We found that plant densities increase with carnivore predation rates, highlighting top-down effects and underscoring the importance of conserving carnivores in ecosystems where plants are at high risk of extinction from herbivory. Our results also show that carnivore density increases with seed-production rates, while herbivore density remains constant, indicating that plants benefit carnivores more than herbivores. This increase in carnivore density driven by high seed-production rates reflects bottom-up effects in the system. Overall, our study demonstrates that plants, herbivores, and carnivores can coexist even under intense predation stress. It suggests that carnivores play a crucial role in regulating plant and herbivore populations, with significant potential for maintaining biodiversity within ecosystems.

Soil moisture estimation is an important task to enable precision agriculture in creating optimal plans for irrigation, fertilization, and harvest. It is common to utilize statistical and machine learning models to estimate soil moisture from traditional data sources such as weather forecasts, soil properties, and crop properties. However, there is a growing interest in utilizing aerial and geospatial imagery to estimate soil moisture. Although these images capture high-resolution crop details, they are expensive to curate and challenging to interpret. Imagine, an AI-enhanced software tool that predicts soil moisture using visual cues captured by smartphones and statistical data given by weather forecasts. This work is a first step towards that goal of developing a multi-modal approach for soil moisture estimation. In particular, we curate a dataset consisting of real-world images taken from ground stations and their corresponding weather data. We also propose MIS-ME - Meteorological & Image based Soil Moisture Estimator, a multi-modal framework for soil moisture estimation. Our extensive analysis shows that MIS-ME achieves a MAPE of 10.14%, outperforming traditional unimodal approaches with a reduction of 3.25% in MAPE for meteorological data and 2.15% in MAPE for image data, highlighting the effectiveness of tailored multi-modal approaches. 10. ATHAR: A High-Quality and Diverse Dataset for Classical Arabic to English Translation

Classical Arabic represents a significant era, encompassing the golden age of Arab culture, philosophy, and scientific literature. With a broad consensus on the importance of translating these literatures to enrich knowledge dissemination across communities, the advent of large language models (LLMs) and translation systems offers promising tools to facilitate this goal. However, we have identified a scarcity of translation datasets in Classical Arabic, which are often limited in scope and topics, hindering the development of high-quality translation systems. In response, we present the ATHAR dataset, comprising 66,000 high-quality Classical Arabic to English translation samples that cover a wide array of subjects including science, culture, and philosophy. Furthermore, we assess the performance of current state-of-the-art LLMs under various settings, concluding that there is a need for such datasets in current systems. Our findings highlight how models can benefit from fine-tuning or incorporating this dataset into their pretraining pipelines. 11. Exploring the Use of Reflective Practices among Teachers of English in Nigerian Secondary Schools

Reflective practice has been reported to be effective in enhancing teaching and learning. However, many teachers of English in Nigeria are not aware of it. Thus, this study investigates the awareness and implementation of reflective practices among English language teachers in Nigerian secondary schools. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted and 77 teachers were selected to participate in the study. Data for the study were collected using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The study discovered that most of the respondents have a low level of engagement in reflective practice in their teaching activities. The findings also suggest a lack of awareness of reflective practices among the majority of respondents. Additionally, the study discovered that even those with some awareness of reflective practices rarely followed established steps for incorporating reflection into their teaching. This indicates a significant gap between theoretical knowledge and practice. Thus, the study makes recommendations for professional development programs to familiarize educators with the concept of reflective teaching and its potential impact on instructional effectiveness.

12. The Impact of a Cognitive Neuroscience-Based Educational Program on Developing Reading Comprehension Skills among Intermediate Stage Students

The current study investigates the impact of an educational program based on cognitive neuroscience on developing reading comprehension skills among second-grade students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To achieve this objective, the researchers employed a quasi-experimental design, selecting a sample of 59 students from Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman Al Saud School for Girls and AlMadinah Al-Jamia Educational School for Boys, both under the supervision of the Education Directorate in Najran region. The sample was divided into two groups: 30 students in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. The researchers developed two instruments: a cognitive neuroscience-based educational program and a written test. After ensuring their validity and reliability, these instruments were administered to the study participants. The results revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental group, while no significant differences were found based on gender or the interaction between gender and group. In light of the results, the researchers provided a set of recommendations.

13. Enhancing Pronunciation Learning through High Variability Phonetic Training: A Meta-Analysis

- Abstract
High-Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT) has demonstrated effectiveness in second language (L2) acquisition. This study utilizes a meta-analysis to explore the influence of high variability on learning L2 pronunciation and identifies the factors that moderate this impact. The studies were collected using a keyword search in the SCOPUS database. In total, our meta-analysis incorporated 18 primary studies that presented results obtained from experimental and control group designs, encompassing a total of 22 effect sizes. The results of our meta-analysis revealed that the overall effect size of HVPT on L2 pronunciation was medium (g = 0.77). Specifically, the effect size was large for consonant sounds and lexical tones, particularly pronounced when utilized by advanced learners. For beginners, the effect size was medium. The context in which the training was conducted also played a role, with a medium effect size observed when sentences were used. Additionally, the number of talkers involved in the study influenced the effect size, with a medium effect size found when 5 to 8 talkers were included. In other cases, the reported effect sizes were either small or non-significant.

14. Information Literacy and Discourse Analysis for Verifying Information among EFL Learners

- Abstract
The task of verifying credible and original information is now more complicated, especially for undergraduate students. This study uses information literacy and discourse analysis to develop English as a foreign language learners' critical reading skills while verifying information on social media. A reading test including false news was used to assess the learners' awareness of the credibility of social media information. Then, they were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was trained in evaluating a set of false news using information literacy and discourse analysis skills. The control group did not receive any training. The experiment was conducted again on both groups. The results show a significant improvement among the experimental group compared to the control group. The findings of this study shed light on the growing need for creating a pedagogical space in English as a foreign language classroom that focuses on raising learners' awareness of information literacy and discourse analysis skills to read with critical perspectives.

15. Reflective Practices among Secondary School Computer Science Teachers: Their Point of View

Reflective practice is an essential catalyst through which the benefits of teaching and learning can be reaped. Through it, weaknesses and strengths can be identified in a way that helps raise the level of addressing challenges that may arise as well as overcome them. This paper presents the critical reflective practices among computer science secondary school teachers from their point of view in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. To this extent, the study aims to determine the degree of critical reflective practices among computer science secondary school teachers in Riyadh from their perspective. The paper also seeks to investigate the effects of variables such as gender, qualifications and experience on the perceptions of the aforementioned teachers, towards the critical reflective practices among computer science secondary school teachers. The study tool is a questionnaire which consisted of two dimensions and was distributed to a population of 739 participants. From this, the study sample comprised (223) computer science teachers working in secondary school in Riyadh. The findings revealed that there is no significant difference in the estimation degree concerning the critical reflective practices due to the gender. From the results, it was also established that there is no significant difference in the degree of estimation in relation to the critical reflective practices due to educational qualification variables. On the contrary however, there is a significant difference in the degree of estimation in regard to the critical reflective practices due to the years of experience variable. These differences were evident in a group of those with more than 10 years of experience. The other findings produced by the study highlight that the participants are in agreement about the importance of critical reflective practices. The degree of reflective practice, which is from the participants' point of view, is considered to be of a high value. The majority of the subjects opted to agree with the practice of reflection after a training session. It was determined from the results that some of the most common strategies favored by practitioners involved the communal practice of mind reflection with individuals from outside the school.

16. The Degree of Special Education Teachers' Employment of Electronic Educational Games in Teaching Disabled Students

The study aimed to reveal the degree of special education teachers' employment of electronic educational games in teaching the disabled. It also showed statistical differences according to the variables of gender, academic qualification, and years of experience. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive survey method was used. The study sample consisted of (96) male and female teachers, of whom (47) male and (47) female teachers were chosen in a stratified random manner from the Directorate of Education for Najran region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the academic year 2022/2023. A questionnaire consisting of (30) items was used, distributed in three domains: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The results showed that the degree of special education teachers' employment of electronic educational games in teaching students with disabilities obtained a mean of (2.57), with a low degree. The results also showed that there are statistically significant differences in the responses of the study sample about the degree of special education teachers' employment of electronic educational games in teaching students with disabilities due to the variables of academic qualification in favor of postgraduate studies, and years of experience in favor of more than ten years. However, there was no statistically significant difference due to the gender variable. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education should pay attention to holding and organizing various specialized training programs to develop the capabilities of special education teachers to employ electronic educational games in teaching, especially in planning, implementation, and evaluation.

17. Evaluating the Quality of Teaching Performance among Jordanian Teachers in Light of Certain Demographic Variables

The quality of teachers' teaching performance depends on several factors, and development of their performance should be made according to a sound scientific methodology, so the study aims to assess the teachers' teaching performance quality in Ma'an, Southern Jordan, and identify the extent to which their performance is affected by some variables (Gender, Professional Experience, Teaching Stages, and Training). In order to achieve the study objectives, the descriptive survey method was used, and a measure of teaching performance quality was determined, consisting of three fields (Planning, Implementation, and Assessment) and including (40) items. The scale was used by educational supervisors to assess the quality of teachers' performance in Ma'an, and (347) male and female teachers were assessed. The results showed that teachers' performance was average in general, but their performance of the first three grades was the weakest, while it was also shown that the female teachers' performance was superior to that of male teachers. The performance of specialized teachers in the scientific field was better than the performance of their counterparts in the humanitarian field. The study showed the positive impact of professional experience and training on the quality of teaching performance. The study also demonstrated the importance of the first five years in the teachers' work, therefore, the necessity of focusing on training and qualification at this stage was recommended, as well as training pre-service teachers appropriately.

18. Robo Academic Advisor: Can Chatbots and Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Interaction?

Purpose: Chatbots and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to alleviate some of the challenges faced by humans. Faculties frequently swamped with teaching and research may find it difficult to act in a parental role for students by offering them individualized advice. Hence, the primary purpose of this study is to review the literature on chatbots and AI in light of their role in auto-advising systems. The authors aimed to gain insights into the most pertinent topics and concerns related to robo academic advisor and identify any gaps in the literature that could serve as potential avenues for further research. Design/methodology/approach: The research employs a systematic literature review and bibliometric techniques to find 67 primary papers that have been published between 1984 and 2023. Using the Scopus database, the researchers built a summary of the literature on chatbots and AI in academic advice. Findings: Chatbot applications can be a promising approach to address the challenges of balancing personalized student advising with automation. More empirical research is required, especially on chatbots and other AI-based advising systems, to understand their effectiveness and how they can be integrated into educational settings. Research limitations/implications: This research's sample size may restrict its findings' generalizability. Furthermore, the study's focus on chatbots may overlook the potential benefits of other AI technologies in enhancing robo academic advising systems. Future research could explore the impact of robo academic advisors in diverse societal backgrounds to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their implications. Practical implications: Higher educational institutions (HEIs) should establish a robo academic advising system that serves various stakeholders. The system's chatbots and AI features must be user-friendly, considering the customers' familiarity with robots. Originality/value: This study contributes to a better understanding of HEIs' perceptions of the adoption of chatbots and AI in academic advising by providing insightful information about the main forces behind robo academic advising, illuminating the most frequently studied uses of chatbots and AI in academic advising.

19. Exploring the Relationship between Critical Thinking, Attitude, and Anxiety in Shaping the Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Translation among Saudi Translators

Critical thinking and anxiety influenced the translation competence of translators. This study sought to examine the interactions between critical thinking, attitude, and anxiety influenced the translation competence of translators. This study adopted an empirical approach to collect data from 145 student translators from many colleges in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Data were analyzed by using structural equation modelling to find out the relationship between the study factors. The results indicated that there was a negative relationship between AI anxiety with critical thinking and attitude. However, there was a strong positive relationship between attitude with critical thinking, and Machine Translation anxiety. Also, there was a positive relationship between Machine Translation anxiety with AI anxiety and critical thinking.

20. Researching Multi-Disciplinary Diversities and Optimizing Their Inherent Strengths and Opportunities: The Role Played by UNILAG Research Management Office

The University of Lagos is one of Nigeria's premiere Universities, established in 1962 with core values emphasizing commitment to quality academic learning and character, integrity, continuous improvement of staff professionalism and competence, as well as a strong commitment to cutting-edge research. In 2012, the University established the Research and Innovation Office, which was subsequently restructured into two offices: the Research Management Office, and the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office, for more efficient functioning. Over the years, the Office has provided enormous support to over 1,700 academic faculty and researchers for cutting-edge research built on a multi-disciplinary approach. This paper provides a detailed discussion of the strategies employed by the Research Management Office to promote multi-disciplinary research from inception to date, the results of efforts to promote collaboration across the currently existing wealth of diversity in academic and research disciplines among researchers in over 12 faculties of the University, the successes recorded, and the challenges faced. The paper further makes recommendations for the advancement of these strategies, and suggestions for pragmatic solutions to challenges experienced while drawing practical and applicable lessons from international best practices for supporting multi-disciplinary research.

21. A Systematic Review of Gamification in MOOCs: Effects on Student Motivation, Engagement, and Dropout Rates

- Abstract
A massive open online course (MOOC) is a powerful tool for expanding educational opportunities, but one of the major challenges facing MOOCs is the high dropout rate. Low completion rates indicate issues with student engagement and motivation. Gamification, the incorporation of game elements in non-game contexts, has shown promise in increasing engagement and completion rates in education. This systematic review aims to explore the current state of research on gamification in MOOCs, including the most commonly used gamification aspects, their impact on motivation and engagement, and the influence on dropout rates. We searched several databases, such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and ERIC, from 2014 to 2021 and included studies that focused on the application of gamification in MOOCs and its effects on motivation, engagement, and dropout rates. A total of 16 studies were analyzed, and the results were synthesized to address the research questions posed. The results of this systematic literature review indicate that while research on gamification in MOOCs is still in its early stages, several studies have shown that gamification elements such as badges, levels, leaderboards, challenges, and rewards significantly affect student motivation and engagement, and reduce dropout rates in MOOCs. However, the effectiveness of these elements varies depending on their specific design, implementation, and alignment with students' intrinsic motivations and goals.

22. Generating Faithful and Salient Text from Multimodal Data

While large multimodal models (LMMs) have obtained strong performance on many multimodal tasks, they may still hallucinate while generating text. Their performance on detecting salient features from visual data is also unclear. In this paper, we develop a framework to generate faithful and salient text from mixed-modal data, which includes images and structured data ( represented in knowledge graphs or tables). Specifically, we train a small vision critic model to identify hallucinated and non-salient features from the image modality. The critic model also generates a list of salient image features. This information is used in the post editing step to improve the generation quality. Experiments on two datasets show that our framework improves LMMs' generation quality on both faithfulness and saliency, outperforming recent techniques aimed at reducing hallucination.

The use of Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) solver for hardware verification incurs exponential run-time in several instances. In this work we have proposed an efficient quantum SAT (qSAT) solver for equivalence checking of Boolean circuits employing Grover's algorithm. The Exclusive-Sum-of-Product based generation of the Conjunctive Normal Form equivalent clauses demand less qubits and minimizes the gates and depth of quantum circuit interpretation. The consideration of reference circuits for verification affecting Grover's iterations and quantum resources are also presented as a case study. In this paper, novel approaches are developed to explore the dynamics of motion in periodic orbits near libration points in cislunar space using the Differential Algebra (DA) framework. The Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) models the motion, with initial states derived numerically via differential correction. Periodic orbit families are computed using the Pseudo-Arclength Continuation (PAC) method and fitted. Two newly developed polynomial regression models (PRMs) express initial states as functions of predefined parameters and are used in the DA framework to evaluate propagated states. The initial states, expressed via PRM, are propagated in the DA framework using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK4) method. The resultant polynomials of both PRM and DA are employed to develop a control law that shows significantly reduced control effort compared to the traditional tracking control law, demonstrating their potential for cislunar space applications, particularly those requiring computationally inexpensive low-energy transfers., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided. The study aims to investigate the similarities and differences in the brain damage caused by Hypoxia-Ischemia (HI), Hypoglycemia, and Epilepsy. Hypoglycemia poses a significant challenge in improving glycemic regulation for insulin-treated patients, while HI brain disease in neonates is associated with low oxygen levels. The study examines the possibility of using a combination of medical data and Electroencephalography (EEG) measurements to predict outcomes over a two-year period. The study employs a multilevel fusion of data features to enhance the accuracy of the predictions. Therefore this paper suggests a hybridized classification model for Hypoxia-Ischemia and Hypoglycemia, Epilepsy brain injury (HCM-BI). A Support Vector Machine is applied with clinical details to define the Hypoxia-Ischemia outcomes of each infant. The newborn babies are assessed every two years again to know the neural development results. A selection of four attributes is derived from the Electroencephalography records, and SVM does not get conclusions regarding the classification of diseases. The final feature extraction of the EEG signal is optimized by the Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) to get the clear health condition of Hypoglycemia and Epilepsy patients. This work provides an optimization mechanism to ensure the compatibility of ReBCO (Rare-earth Barium Copper Oxide) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes with non-planar stellarator coils. ReBCO coils enable higher field strengths and operating temperatures for the magnet systems of future fusion reactors but are sensitive to strain due to their brittle, ceramic functional layer. We have implemented a metric to optimize strain on stellarator coils made from ReBCO superconductors into the stellarator optimization framework \texttt{SIMSOPT} and used it to design new stellarator coil configurations. To ensure structural integrity of coils wound with HTS tape, we introduce a penalty on binormal curvature and torsion along a coil. It can be used to optimize the orientation of the winding path for a given coil filament or to jointly optimize orientation and coil filament. We apply the strain optimization to three cases. For the EPOS (Electrons and Positrons in an Optimized Stellarator) design, we combine the strain penalty with an objective for quasisymmetry into a single-stage optimization; this enables us to find a configuration with excellent quasisymmetry at the smallest possible size compatible with the use of ReBCO tape. For CSX (Columbia Stellarator eXperiment), in addition to HTS strain, we add a penalty to prevent net tape rotation to ease the coil winding process. If the strain is calculated for a coil at reactor scale, we find a considerable variation of the binormal and torsional strain over the cross section of the large winding pack (0.5\,m x 0.5\,m). By exploiting the overall orientation of the winding pack as a degree of freedom, we can reduce binormal and torsional strains below limits for every ReBCO stack., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Passive reflectors mitigate millimeter-wave (mmwave) link blockages by extending coverage to non-line-ofsight (NLoS) regions. However, their deployment often leads to irregular reflected beam patterns and coverage gaps. This results in rapid channel fluctuations and potential outages. In this paper, we propose two LiDAR-aided link enhancement techniques to address these challenges. Leveraging user position information, we introduce a location-dependent link control strategy and a user selection technique to improve NLoS link reliability and coverage. Experimental results validate the efficacy of the proposed techniques in reducing outages and enhancing NLoS signal strength.

Indoor tracking and pose estimation, i.e., determining the position and orientation of a moving target, are increasingly important due to their numerous applications. While Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) provide high update rates, their positioning errors can accumulate rapidly over time. To mitigate this, it is common to integrate INS with complementary systems to correct drift and improve accuracy. This paper presents a novel approach that combines INS with an acoustic Riemannian-based localization system to enhance indoor positioning and orientation tracking. The proposed method employs both the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for fusing data from the two systems. The Riemannian-based localization system delivers high-accuracy estimates of the target's position and orientation, which are then used to correct the INS data. A new projection algorithm is introduced to map the EKF or UKF output onto the Riemannian manifold, further improving estimation accuracy. Our results show that the proposed methods significantly outperform benchmark algorithms in both position and orientation estimation. The effectiveness of the proposed methods was evaluated through extensive numerical simulations and testing using our in-house experimental setup. These evaluations confirm the superior performance of our approach in practical scenarios.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A search for violation of the charge-parity $C\!P$ symmetry in the $D^+\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+\pi^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{\phi\pi^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. 33. An Investigation of Denial of Service Attacks on Autonomous Driving Software and Hardware in Operation

This research investigates the impact of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, specifically Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) flood attacks, on Autonomous Driving (AD) systems, focusing on their control modules. Two experimental setups were created: the first involved an ICMP flood attack on a Raspberry Pi running an AD software stack, and the second examined the effects of single and double ICMP flood attacks on a Global Navigation Satellite System Real-Time Kinematic (GNSS-RTK) device for high-accuracy localization of an autonomous vehicle that is available on the market. The results indicate a moderate impact of DoS attacks on the AD stack, where the increase in median computation time was marginal, suggesting a degree of resilience to these types of attacks. In contrast, the GNSS device demonstrated significant vulnerability: during DoS attacks, the sample rate dropped drastically to approximately 50% and 5% of the nominal rate for single and double attacker configurations, respectively. Additionally, the longest observed time increments were in the range of seconds during the attacks. These results underscore the vulnerability of AD systems to DoS attacks and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures. This work provides valuable insights into the design requirements of AD software stacks and highlights that external hardware and modules can be significant attack surfaces.

34. LASSO-MOGAT: A Multi-Omics Graph Attention Framework for Cancer Classification

The application of machine learning methods to analyze changes in gene expression patterns has recently emerged as a powerful approach in cancer research, enhancing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning cancer development and progression. Combining gene expression data with other types of omics data has been reported by numerous works to improve cancer classification outcomes. Despite these advances, effectively integrating high-dimensional multi-omics data and capturing the complex relationships across different biological layers remains challenging. This paper introduces LASSO-MOGAT (LASSO-Multi-Omics Gated ATtention), a novel graph-based deep learning framework that integrates messenger RNA, microRNA, and DNA methylation data to classify 31 cancer types. Utilizing differential expression analysis with LIMMA and LASSO regression for feature selection, and leveraging Graph Attention Networks (GATs) to incorporate protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, LASSO-MOGAT effectively captures intricate relationships within multi-omics data. Experimental validation using five-fold cross-validation demonstrates the method's precision, reliability, and capacity for providing comprehensive insights into cancer molecular mechanisms. The computation of attention coefficients for the edges in the graph by the proposed graph-attention architecture based on protein-protein interactions proved beneficial for identifying synergies in multi-omics data for cancer classification.

Transformer models are increasingly prevalent in various applications, yet our understanding of their internal workings remains limited. This paper investigates the modularity and task specialization of neurons within transformer architectures, focusing on both vision (ViT) and language (Mistral 7B) models. Using a combination of selective pruning and MoEfication clustering techniques, we analyze the overlap and specialization of neurons across different tasks and data subsets. Our findings reveal evidence of task-specific neuron clusters, with varying degrees of overlap between related tasks. We observe that neuron importance patterns persist to some extent even in randomly initialized models, suggesting an inherent structure that training refines. Additionally, we find that neuron clusters identified through MoEfication correspond more strongly to task-specific neurons in earlier and later layers of the models. For large-scale cyber-physical systems, the collaboration of spatially distributed sensors is often needed to perform the state estimation process. Privacy concerns arise from disclosing sensitive measurements to a cloud estimator. To solve this issue, we propose a differentially private set-based estimation protocol that guarantees true state containment in the estimated set and differential privacy for the sensitive measurements throughout the set-based state estimation process within the central and local differential privacy models. Zonotopes are employed in the proposed differentially private set-based estimator, offering computational advantages in set operations. We consider a plant of a non-linear discrete-time dynamical system with bounded modeling uncertainties, sensors that provide sensitive measurements with bounded measurement uncertainties, and a cloud estimator that predicts the system's state. The privacy-preserving noise perturbs the centers of measurement zonotopes, thereby concealing the precise position of these zonotopes, i.e., ensuring privacy preservation for the sets containing sensitive measurements. Compared to existing research, our approach achieves less privacy loss and utility loss through the central and local differential privacy models by leveraging a numerically optimized truncated noise distribution. The proposed estimator is perturbed by weaker noise than the analytical approaches in the literature to guarantee the same level of privacy, therefore improving the estimation utility. The rare electromagnetic $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is observed with a significance greatly exceeding the discovery threshold, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. The rate of this decay is measured relative to that of the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ mode. 38. Enhancing Customer Churn Prediction in Telecommunications: An Adaptive Ensemble Learning Approach

Customer churn, the discontinuation of services by existing customers, poses a significant challenge to the telecommunications industry. This paper proposes a novel adaptive ensemble learning framework for highly accurate customer churn prediction. The framework integrates multiple base models, including XGBoost, LightGBM, LSTM, a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, and Support Vector Machine (SVM). These models are strategically combined using a stacking ensemble method, further enhanced by meta-feature generation from base model predictions. A rigorous data preprocessing pipeline, coupled with a multi-faceted feature engineering approach, optimizes model performance. The framework is evaluated on three publicly available telecom churn datasets, demonstrating substantial accuracy improvements over state-of-the-art techniques. In the rapidly evolving landscape of online recipe sharing within a globalized context, there has been a notable surge in research towards comprehending and generating food recipes. Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) like GPT-2 and LLaVA have paved the way for Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to delve deeper into various facets of food-related tasks, encompassing ingredient recognition and comprehensive recipe generation. Despite impressive performance and multi-modal adaptability of LLMs, domain-specific training remains paramount for their effective application. This work evaluates existing LLMs for recipe generation and proposes LLaVA-Chef, a novel model trained on a curated dataset of diverse recipe prompts in a multi-stage approach. First, we refine the mapping of visual food image embeddings to the language space. Second, we adapt LLaVA to the food domain by fine-tuning it on relevant recipe data. Third, we utilize diverse prompts to enhance the model's recipe comprehension. Finally, we improve the linguistic quality of generated recipes by penalizing the model with a custom loss function. LLaVA-Chef demonstrates impressive improvements over pretrained LLMs and prior works. A detailed qualitative analysis reveals that LLaVA-Chef generates more detailed recipes with precise ingredient mentions, compared to existing approaches.

40. Investigation of Charged Higgs Bosons Production from Vector-Like $T$ Quark Decays at $e\gamma$ Collider

Within the extended framework of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model Type II (2HDM-II) enhanced by a vector-like quark (VLQ) doublet $TB$, we conduct a detailed analysis of the process $e^{-}\gamma \rightarrow b\nu_{e}\bar{T}$ at future high-energy $e\gamma$ colliders, focusing on the subsequent decays $\bar{T} \rightarrow H^{-} \bar{b}$ and $H^{-} \rightarrow \bar{t}b$. Utilizing current theoretical and experimental constraints, we calculate production cross sections for both unpolarized and polarized beams at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 2$ and 3 TeV, demonstrating that polarized beams significantly enhance detectability through higher production rates. By analyzing the kinematic distributions, we establish optimized selection criteria to effectively distinguish signal events from background. At $\sqrt{s} = 2$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 1500 fb$^{-1}$, we find exclusion regions within $s_R^d \in [0.085, 0.16]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1260]$ GeV and a discovery potential within $s_R^d \in [0.14, 0.17]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1100]$ GeV, with these regions expanding to $s_R^d \in [0.05, 0.15]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1340]$ GeV and $s_R^d \in [0.11, 0.17]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1160]$ GeV at 3000 fb$^{-1}$. At $\sqrt{s} = 3$ TeV and 1500 fb$^{-1}$, we identify exclusion regions of $s_R^d \in [0.055, 0.135]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1640]$ GeV and discovery regions of $s_R^d \in [0.09, 0.15]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1400]$ GeV, which further expand to $s_R^d \in [0.028, 0.12]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1970]$ GeV and $s_R^d \in [0.04, 0.122]$ for $m_T \in [1000, 1760]$ GeV at 3000 fb$^{-1}$. These findings highlight the enhanced detection potential at higher energies, particularly with polarized beams. Let $X$ be a smooth variety over a field $K$ with function field $K(X)$. Using the interpretation of the torsion part of the \'etale cohomology group $H_{\text{\'et}}^2(K(X), \mathbb{G}_m)$ in terms of Milnor-Quillen algebraic $K$-group $K_2(K(X))$, we prove that under mild conditions on the norm maps along unramified extensions of $K(X)$ over $X$, there exist cohomological Brauer classes in $H_{\text{\'et}}^2(X, \mathbb{G}_m)$ that are representable by Azumaya algebras on $X$. A point cloud is a crucial geometric data structure utilized in numerous applications. The adoption of deep neural networks referred to as Point Cloud Neural Networks (PC- NNs), for processing 3D point clouds, has significantly advanced fields that rely on 3D geometric data to enhance the efficiency of tasks. Expanding the size of both neural network models and 3D point clouds introduces significant challenges in minimizing computational and memory requirements. This is essential for meeting the demanding requirements of real-world applications, which prioritize minimal energy consumption and low latency. Therefore, investigating redundancy in PCNNs is crucial yet challenging due to their sensitivity to parameters. Additionally, traditional pruning methods face difficulties as these networks rely heavily on weights and points. Nonetheless, our research reveals a promising phenomenon that could refine standard PCNN pruning techniques. Our findings suggest that preserving only the top p% of the highest magnitude weights is crucial for accuracy preservation. For example, pruning 99% of the weights from the PointNet model still results in accuracy close to the base level. Specifically, in the ModelNet40 dataset, where the base accuracy with the PointNet model was 87. 5%, preserving only 1% of the weights still achieves an accuracy of 86.8%. In this paper, we investigate the combinatorial properties of three classes of integer partitions: (1) $s$-modular partitions, a class consisting of partitions into parts with a number of occurrences (i.e., multiplicity) congruent to $0$ or $1$ modulo $s$, (2) $s$-congruent partitions, which generalize Sellers' partitions into parts not congruent to $2$ modulo $4$, and (3) $s$-duplicate partitions, of which the partitions having distinct odd parts and enumerated by the function $\mypod(n)$ are a special case. Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) provide an increasingly promising solution for powering Internet-of-Things smart devices, which has led to a surge in IPV research and the development of new IPV technologies. However, the diverse lighting scenarios adopted in IPV research pose unique challenges in characterization, reporting, and benchmarking, which may obscure genuine performance improvements and result in inaccurate conclusions due to characterization errors. Spectral variations among artificial light sources further complicate benchmarking. This study provides a comprehensive, quantitative analysis of these challenges, investigating them through experimental characterization of IPVs covering a broad performance parameter space, including c-Si, a-Si:H, perovskite, and organic devices. We reveal that many of these challenges can lead to unacceptable error levels. A particularly critical issue is the angular interplay among the light source, measuring device, and IPV device, which compromises accuracy under diffuse illumination. To address these challenges, we evaluate practical protocols to overcome angular issues and enable benchmarking against standardized spectral conditions. To facilitate the implementation of our findings, we provide comprehensive checklists for accurate IPV characterization, reporting, and benchmarking. We anticipate that our analyses and guidelines will stimulate further advancements in IPV technologies by ensuring reliable performance evaluation, thereby facilitating the realization of IPVs' full potential.

45. A Riemannian Approach for Spatiotemporal Analysis and Generation of 4D Tree-shaped Structures

We propose the first comprehensive approach for modeling and analyzing the spatiotemporal shape variability in tree-like 4D objects, i.e., 3D objects whose shapes bend, stretch, and change in their branching structure over time as they deform, grow, and interact with their environment. Our key contribution is the representation of tree-like 3D shapes using Square Root Velocity Function Trees (SRVFT). By solving the spatial registration in the SRVFT space, which is equipped with an L2 metric, 4D tree-shaped structures become time-parameterized trajectories in this space. This reduces the problem of modeling and analyzing 4D tree-like shapes to that of modeling and analyzing elastic trajectories in the SRVFT space, where elasticity refers to time warping. In this paper, we propose a novel mathematical representation of the shape space of such trajectories, a Riemannian metric on that space, and computational tools for fast and accurate spatiotemporal registration and geodesics computation between 4D tree-shaped structures. Leveraging these building blocks, we develop a full framework for modelling the spatiotemporal variability using statistical models and generating novel 4D tree-like structures from a set of exemplars. We demonstrate and validate the proposed framework using real 4D plant data.

46. Novel Many-to-Many NOMA-based Communication Protocols for Vehicular Platoons

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique for ultra-reliable low-latency communication as it provides higher spectral efficiency and lower latency. In this work, we propose novel many-to-many (M2M) NOMA-based schemes to exchange broadcast, multicast, and unicast messages between cluster heads (CHs) of vehicular platoons. Specifically, we design uplink-M2M-NOMA (UM-NOMA), downlink-M2M-NOMA (DM-NOMA) and joint uplink-downlink-M2M-NOMA (UDM-NOMA) schemes for peer-to-peer vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). We propose a unique clustering design for full-duplex communication that utilizes the high throughput millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. Furthermore, we investigate jointly optimal CH selection (CHS) and power allocation (PA) to maximize the network sum rate and devise a computationally efficient tailored-greedy algorithm that yields near-optimal performance. We also propose a super-cluster formation protocol to further limit the overhead of successive interference cancellation (SIC). The results reveal that in most of the considered scenarios, the proposed UDM-NOMA scheme outperforms orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of sum rate by up to 50% even when the SIC receiver errors reach 10%.

The advent of 1-bit large language models (LLMs) has attracted considerable attention and opened up new research opportunities. However, 1-bit LLMs only improve a fraction of models by applying extreme quantization to the projection layers while leaving attention heads unchanged. Therefore, to avoid fundamentally wrong choices of goals in future research, it is crucial to understand the actual improvements in computation and memory usage that 1-bit LLMs can deliver. The research was conducted at the College of Agricultural Sciences Engineering/University of Sulaimani/ Kurdistan Region-Iraqi to investigate effects of different concentrations of IBA (0, 3000, 4000 and 5000 ppm) and soaking in water for 24 hours on propagation black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) by hardwood cuttings. In this research the parameters of rooting percentage, root number, root length, sprout bud number, shoot length and shoot diameter were measured. Effect of individual factors showed that the highest rooting percentage (15%) was achieved in cuttings soaked in water for 24 hours, as well as improving other traits. Also, the best (23.33%) rooting was found in cuttings dipped in 4000 ppm IBA. Interaction effects of the two factors showed that cuttings treated with 4000 ppm IBA and soaked in water for 24 hours gave the highest (40%) rooting, and the highest other root and shoot traits were achieved in the same interaction as well.

49. Beyond Labels: Aligning Large Language Models with Human-like Reasoning

Aligning large language models (LLMs) with a human reasoning approach ensures that LLMs produce morally correct and human-like decisions. Ethical concerns are raised because current models are prone to generating false positives and providing malicious responses. To contribute to this issue, we have curated an ethics dataset named Dataset for Aligning Reasons (DFAR), designed to aid in aligning language models to generate human-like reasons. The dataset comprises statements with ethical-unethical labels and their corresponding reasons. In this study, we employed a unique and novel fine-tuning approach that utilizes ethics labels and their corresponding reasons (L+R), in contrast to the existing fine-tuning approach that only uses labels (L). The original pre-trained versions, the existing fine-tuned versions, and our proposed fine-tuned versions of LLMs were then evaluated on an ethical-unethical classification task and a reason-generation task. Our proposed fine-tuning strategy notably outperforms the others in both tasks, achieving significantly higher accuracy scores in the classification task and lower misalignment rates in the reason-generation task. The increase in classification accuracies and decrease in misalignment rates indicate that the L+R fine-tuned models align more with human ethics. Hence, this study illustrates that injecting reasons has substantially improved the alignment of LLMs, resulting in more human-like responses. People commonly communicate in English, Arabic, and Bengali spoken languages through various mediums. However, deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals primarily use body language and sign language to express their needs and achieve independence. Sign language research is burgeoning to enhance communication with the deaf community. While many researchers have made strides in recognizing sign languages such as French, British, Arabic, Turkish, and American, there has been limited research on Bangla sign language (BdSL) with less-than-satisfactory results. One significant barrier has been the lack of a comprehensive Bangla sign language dataset. In our work, we introduced a new BdSL dataset comprising alphabets totaling 18,000 images, with each image being 224x224 pixels in size. Our dataset encompasses 36 Bengali symbols, of which 30 are consonants and the remaining six are vowels. Despite our dataset contribution, many existing systems continue to grapple with achieving high-performance accuracy for BdSL. To address this, we devised a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, integrating multiple convolutional layers, activation functions, dropout techniques, and LSTM layers. Upon evaluating our hybrid-CNN model with the newly created BdSL dataset, we achieved an accuracy rate of 97.92\%. We are confident that both our BdSL dataset and hybrid CNN model will be recognized as significant milestones in BdSL research.
