Abstract

Pipes are subjected to axial pulling forces that lead to shear stresses at the soil–pipe interface and axial strain distributions from various circumstances, including pulled-in-place pipe installation and permanent ground deformations. This study investigates the axial pullout response of fusible polyvinyl chloride pipes in dense sand. Three tests were conducted using a large-scale soil chamber to assess the development of axial resistance and the impact of non-continuous pulling and fusion weld joints. The measured maximum load response was significantly underpredicted by guidelines typically used in practice. Additionally, non-continuous pulling and changes to the pull rate had negligible impacts on the load–displacement response. Pipes were instrumented with distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS) to capture the nonlinear development of strains along these flexible pipes and the mobilization of soil friction along the soil–pipe interface. Measurements have provided insight into the propagation of axial strains along the pipe, the additional longitudinal restraint provided by fusion weld joints, and their impact on the axial force distribution along pipes. The "locked-in" strains due to residual soil–pipe friction remaining after the axial pulling force is removed have also been measured using DFOS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a measurement of isomeric yield-ratios in fission, the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique, which projects the radial motions of ions in the Penning trap (JYFLTRAP) onto a position-sensitive micro-channel plate detector, has been applied. To obtain the yield ratio, that is the relative population of two states of an isomer pair, a novel analysis procedure has been developed to determine the number of detected ions in each state, as well as corrections for the detector efficiency and decay losses. In order to determine the population of the states in cases where their mass difference is too small to reach full separation, a Bayesian Gaussian Mixture model was implemented. The position-dependent efficiency of the micro-channel plate detector was calibrated by mapping it with 133Cs+ ions, and a Gaussian Process was trained with the position data to construct an efficiency function that could be used to correct the recorded distributions. The obtained numbers of counts of excited and ground-state ions were used to derive the isomeric yield ratio, taking into account decay losses as well as feeding from precursors.

Abstract

We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei $^{74,75}$Ni and the clearly identified ground state of $^{76}$Cu, along with a more precise mass-excess value of $^{78}$Cu, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N=50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear masses is strong when implemented using a fixed trajectory as in the previous studies, but the effect is substantially reduced when implemented self-consistently in the simulation.

15. High-precision electron-capture Value Measurement of In for electron-neutrino mass determination

Abstract

A precise determination of the ground state $^{111}$In (9/2+) electron capture to ground state of $^{111}$Cd (1/2+) Q value has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. A value of 857.63(17) keV was obtained, which is nearly a factor of 20 more precise than the value extracted from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 (AME2020). The high-precision electron-capture Q value measurement along with the nuclear energy level data of 866.60(6) keV, 864.8(3) keV, 855.6(10) keV, and 853.94(7) keV for $^{111}$Cd was used to determine whether the four states are energetically allowed for a potential ultra-low Q-value β decay or electron-capture decay. Our results confirm that the excited states of 866.60(6) keV with spin-parity (Jπ) of 3/2$^{+}$ and 864.8(3) keV with Jπ=3/2+ are ruled out due to their deduced electron-capture Q value being smaller than 0 keV at the level of around 20σ and 50σ, respectively. Electron-capture decays to the excited states at 853.94(7) keV (Jπ=7/2+) and 855.6(10) keV (Jπ=3/2+), are energetically allowed with Q values of 3.69(19) keV and 2.0(10) keV, respectively. The allowed decay transition $^{111}$In (9/2$^{+}$) → $^{111}$Cd (7/2$^{+}$), with a Q value of 3.69(19) keV, is a potential new candidate for neutrino-mass measurements by future EC experiments featuring new powerful detection technologies. The results show that the indium level 2p1/2 for this decay branch leads to a significant increase in the number of EC events in the energy region sensitive to the electron neutrino mass.

Abstract

To enhance the production of medium-heavy,neutron-rich nuclei, and to facilitate measurements of independentyields of neutron-induced fission, a proton-toneutronconverter and a dedicated ion guide for neutroninducedfission have been developed for the IGISOL facilityat the University of Jyväskylä. The ion guide holds thefissionable targets, and the fission products emerging fromthe targets are collected in helium gas and transported to thedownstream experimental stations.Acomputer model, basedon a combination of MCNPX for modeling the neutron production,the fission code GEF, and GEANT4 for the transportof the fission products, was developed. The model willbe used to improve the setup with respect to the productionand collection of fission products. In this paper we benchmarkthe model by comparing simulations to a measurementin which fission products were implanted in foils located atdifferent positions in the ion guide. In addition, the productsfrom neutron activation in the titanium foil and the uraniumtargets are studied. The result suggests that the neutron fluxat the high-energy part of the neutron spectrum is overestimatedby approximately 40%.However, the transportation offission products in the uranium targets agrees with the experimentwithin 10%. Furthermore, the simulated transportationof fission products in the helium gas achieves almost perfectagreement with the measurement. Hence, we conclude thatthe model, after correction for the neutron flux, is well suitedfor optimization studies of future ion guide designs.

Abstract

Isomers close to the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni (Z = 28 , N = 50) provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence far from stability. The existence of a long-lived isomeric state in 76Cu has been debated for a long time. We have performed high-precision mass measurements of 76Cu with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility and confirm the existence of such an isomeric state with an excitation energy E x = 64.8 (25) keV. Based on the ratio of detected ground- and isomeric-state ions as a function of time, we show that the isomer is the shorter-living state previously considered as the ground state of 76Cu. The result can potentially change the conclusions made in previous works related to the spin-parity and charge radius of the 76Cu ground state. Additionally, the new 76Cu (n , γ) reaction Q -value has an impact on the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
