We study the interaction of a laser cavity-soliton microcomb with an externally coupled, co-propagating tunable CW pump, observing parametric Kerr interactions which lead to the formation of both a cross-phase modulation and a four-wave mixing replica of the laser cavity-soliton. We compare and explain the dependence of the microcomb spectra from both the cavity-soliton and pump parameters, demonstrating the ability to adjust the microcomb externally without breaking or interfering with the soliton state. The parametric nature of the process agrees with numerical simulations. The parametric extended state maintains the typical robustness of laser-cavity solitons.

Innovative terahertz waveguides are in high demand to serve as a versatile platform for transporting and manipulating terahertz signals for the full deployment of future six-generation (6G) communication systems. Metal-wire waveguides have emerged as promising candidates, offering the crucial advantage of sustaining low-loss and low-dispersion propagation of broadband terahertz pulses. Recent advances have opened up new avenues for implementing signal-processing functionalities within metal-wire waveguides by directly engraving grooves along the wire surfaces. However, the challenge remains to design novel groove structures to unlock unprecedented signal-processing functionalities. In this study, we report a plasmonic signal processor by engineering topological interface states within a terahertz two-wire waveguide. We construct the interface by connecting two multiscale groove structures with distinct topological invariants, i.e., featuring a π-shift difference in the Zak phases. The existence of this topological interface within the waveguide is experimentally validated by investigating the transmission spectrum, revealing a prominent transmission peak in the center of the topological bandgap. Remarkably, we show that this resonance is highly robust against structural disorders, and its quality factor can be flexibly controlled. This unique feature not only facilitates essential functions such as band filtering and isolating but also promises to serve as a linear differential equation solver. We report a dual-polarization radio frequency (RF) channelizer based on microcombs. Two high-Q micro-ring resonators (MRRs) with slightly different free spectral ranges (FSRs) are used: one MRR is pumped to yield soliton crystal microcombs ("active"), and the other MRR is used as a "passive" periodic optical filter supporting dual-polarization operation to slice the RF spectrum. With the tailored mismatch between the FSRs of the active and passive MRRs, wideband RF spectra can be channelized into multiple segments featuring digital-compatible bandwidths via the Vernier effect. Due to the use of dual-polarization states, the number of channelized spectral segments, and thus the RF instantaneous bandwidth (with a certain spectral resolution), can be doubled. In our experiments, we used 20 microcomb lines with ∼ 49 GHz FSR to achieve 20 channels for each polarization, with high RF spectra slicing resolutions at 144 MHz (TE) and 163 MHz (TM), respectively; achieving an instantaneous RF operation bandwidth of 3.1 GHz (TE) and 2.2 GHz (TM). Our approach paves the path towards monolithically integrated photonic RF receivers (the key components - active and passive MRRs are all fabricated on the same platform) with reduced complexity, size, and unprecedented performance, which is important for wide RF applications with digital-compatible signal detection.

Heme is the prosthetic group for cytochrome that exists in nearly all living organisms and serves as a vital component of human red blood cells (RBCs). Tunable optical nonlinearity in suspensions of RBCs has been demonstrated previously, however, the nonlinear optical response of a pure heme (without membrane structure) solution has not been studied to our knowledge. In this work, we show optical nonlinearity in two common kinds of heme (i.e., hemin and hematin) solutions by a series of experiments and numerical simulations. We find that the mechanism of nonlinearity in heme solutions is distinct from that observed in the RBC suspensions where the nonlinearity can be easily tuned through optical power, concentration, and the solution properties. In particular, we observe an unusual phenomenon wherein the heme solution exhibits negative optical nonlinearity and render self-collimation of a focused beam at specific optical powers, enabling shape-preserving propagation of light to long distances. Our results may have potential applications in optical imaging and medical diagnosis through blood.

The engineering of thermo-optic effects has found broad applications in integrated photonic devices, facilitating efficient light manipulation to achieve various functionalities. Here, we perform both an experimental characterization and a theoretical analysis of these effects in integrated microring resonators made from high-index doped silica, which have had many applications in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics. By fitting the experimental results with theory, we obtain fundamental parameters that characterize their thermo-optic performance, including the thermo-optic coefficient, the efficiency of the optically induced thermo-optic process, and the thermal conductivity. The characteristics of these parameters are compared to those of other materials commonly used for integrated photonic platforms, such as silicon, silicon nitride, and silica. These results offer a comprehensive insight into the thermo-optic properties of doped silica-based devices. Understanding these properties is essential for efficiently controlling and engineering them in many practical applications.

The performance limitations of traditional computer architectures have led to the rise of brain-inspired hardware, with optical solutions gaining popularity due to the energy efficiency, high speed, and scalability of linear operations. However, the use of optics to emulate the synaptic activity of neurons has remained a challenge since the integration of nonlinear nodes is power-hungry and, thus, hard to scale. Neuromorphic wave computing offers a new paradigm for energy-efficient information processing, building upon transient and passively nonlinear interactions between optical modes in a waveguide. Here, an implementation of this concept is presented using broadband frequency conversion by coherent higher-order soliton fission in a single-mode fiber. It is shown that phase encoding on femtosecond pulses at the input, alongside frequency selection and weighting at the system output, makes transient spectro-temporal system states interpretable and allows for the energy-efficient emulation of various digital neural networks. The experiments in a compact, fully fiber-integrated setup substantiate an anticipated enhancement in computational performance with increasing system nonlinearity. The findings suggest that broadband frequency generation, accessible on-chip and in-fiber with off-the-shelf components, may challenge the traditional approach to node-based brain-inspired hardware design, ultimately leading to energy-efficient, scalable, and dependable computing with minimal optical hardware requirements., (© 2023 The Authors. Soliton crystals are a novel form of microcomb, with relatively high conversion efficiency, good thermal robustness, and simple initiation among the methods to generate them. Soliton crystals can be easily generated in microring resonators with an appropriate mode-crossing. However, fabrication defects can significantly affect the mode-crossing placement and strength in devices. To enable soliton crystal states to be harnessed for a broader range of microcomb applications, we need a better understanding of the link between mode-crossing properties and the desired soliton crystal properties. Here, we investigate how to generate the same soliton crystal state in two different microrings, how changes in microring temperature change the mode-crossing properties, and how mode-crossing properties affect the generation of our desired soliton crystal state. We find that temperature affects the mode-crossing position in these rings but without major changes in the mode-crossing strength. We find that our wanted state can be generated over a device temperature range of 25 ∘ C, with different mode-crossing properties, and is insensitive to the precise mode-crossing position between resonances.

Self-oscillation-the periodic change of a system under a non-periodic stimulus-is vital for creating low-maintenance autonomous devices in soft robotics technologies. Soft composites of macroscopic dimensions are often doped with plasmonic nanoparticles to enhance energy dissipation and generate periodic response. However, while it is still unknown whether a dispersion of photonic nanocrystals may respond to light as a soft actuator, a dynamic analysis of nanocolloids self-oscillating in a liquid is also lacking. This study presents a new self-oscillator model for illuminated colloidal systems. It predicts that the surface temperature of thermoplasmonic nanoparticles and the number density of their clusters jointly oscillate at frequencies ranging from infrasonic to acoustic values. New experiments with spontaneously clustering gold nanorods, where the photothermal effect alters the interplay of light (stimulus) with the disperse system on a macroscopic scale, strongly support the theory. These findings enlarge the current view on self-oscillation phenomena and anticipate the colloidal state of matter to be a suitable host for accommodating light-propelled machineries. Identical quantum subsystems can possess a property which does not have any classical counterpart: indistinguishability. As a long-debated phenomenon, identical particles' indistinguishability has been shown to be at the heart of various fundamental physical results. When concerned with the spatial degree of freedom, identical constituents can be made indistinguishable by overlapping their spatial wave functions via appropriately defined spatial deformations . By the laws of quantum mechanics, any measurement designed to resolve a quantity which depends on the spatial degree of freedom only and performed on the regions of overlap is not able to assign the measured outcome to one specific particle within the system. The result is an entangled state where the measured property is shared between the identical constituents. In this work, we present a coherent formalization of the concept of deformation in a general [Formula: see text]-particle scenario, together with a suitable measure of the degree of indistinguishability. We highlight the basic differences with non-identical particles scenarios and discuss the inherent role of spatial deformations as entanglement activators within the spatially localized operations and classical communication operational framework. Plasmonic polymeric nanoassemblies offer valuable opportunities in photoconversion applications. Localized surface plasmon mechanisms behind such nanoassemblies govern their functionalities under light illumination. However, an in-depth investigation at the single nanoparticle (NP) level is still challenging, especially when the buried interface is involved, due to the availability of suitable techniques. Here, we synthesized an anisotropic heterodimer composed of a self-assembled polymer vesicle (THPG) capped with a single gold NP, enabling an 8-fold enhancement in hydrogen generation compared to the nonplasmonic THPG vesicle. We explored the anisotropic heterodimer at the single particle level by employing advanced transmission electron microscopes, including one equipped with a femtosecond pulsed laser, which allows us to visualize the polarization- and frequency-dependent distribution of the enhanced electric near fields at the vicinity of Au cap and Au-polymer interface. These elaborated fundamental findings may guide designing new hybrid nanostructures tailored for plasmon-related applications.

Non-linear materials are cornerstones of modern optics and electronics. Strong dependence on the intrinsic properties of particular materials, however, inhibits the at-will extension of demanding non-linear effects, especially those second-order ones, to widely adopted centrosymmetric materials (for example, silicon) and technologically important burgeoning spectral domains (for example, terahertz frequencies). Here we introduce a universal route to efficient non-linear responses enabled by exciting non-linear Thomson scattering, a fundamental process in electrodynamics that was known to occur only in relativistic electrons in metamaterial composed of linear materials. Such a mechanism modulates the trajectory of charges, either intrinsically or extrinsically provided in solids, at twice the driving frequency, allowing second-harmonic generation at terahertz frequencies on crystalline silicon with extremely large non-linear susceptibility in our proof-of-concept experiments. Photonic-based implementation of advanced computing tasks is a potential alternative to mitigate the bandwidth limitations of electronics. Despite the inherent advantage of a large bandwidth, photonic systems are generally bulky and power-hungry. In this respect, all-pass spectral phase filters enable simultaneous ultrahigh speed operation and minimal power consumption for a wide range of signal processing functionalities. Yet, phase filters offering GHz to sub-GHz frequency resolution in practical, integrated platforms have remained elusive. We report a fibre Bragg grating-based phase filter with a record frequency resolution of 1 GHz, at least 10× improvement compared to a conventional optical waveshaper. The all-fibre phase filter is employed to experimentally realize high-speed fully passive NOT and XNOR logic operations. We demonstrate inversion of a 45-Gbps 127-bit random sequence with an energy consumption of ~34 fJ/bit, and XNOR logic at a bit rate of 10.25 Gbps consuming ~425 fJ/bit. Multidimensional imaging of transient events has proven pivotal in unveiling many fundamental mechanisms in physics, chemistry, and biology. In particular, real-time imaging modalities with ultrahigh temporal resolutions are required for capturing ultrashort events on picosecond timescales. Despite recent approaches witnessing a dramatic boost in high-speed photography, current single-shot ultrafast imaging schemes operate only at conventional optical wavelengths, being suitable solely within an optically-transparent framework. Here, leveraging on the unique penetration capability of terahertz radiation, we demonstrate a single-shot ultrafast terahertz photography system that can capture multiple frames of a complex ultrafast scene in non-transparent media with sub-picosecond temporal resolution. By multiplexing an optical probe beam in both the time and spatial-frequency domains, we encode the terahertz-captured three-dimensional dynamics into distinct spatial-frequency regions of a superimposed optical image, which is then computationally decoded and reconstructed. We report the coherent generation and detection of terahertz (THz) pulses featuring a spectral bandwidth in the range of 0.1-9 THz achieved via the use of a high repetition rate (250 kHz), low pulse energy (6.2 µJ) laser system. More specifically, we test and evaluate a solid-state biased coherent detection device in combination with a spintronic emitter. We demonstrate the use of this combination of techniques to measure the ultra-broadband THz frequency optical properties of bulk crystalline materials with time-domain spectroscopy.

Laser cavity-soliton microcombs are robust optical pulsed sources, usually implemented with a microresonator-filtered fibre laser. In such a configuration, a nonlinear microcavity converts the narrowband pulse resulting from bandwidth-limited amplification to a background-free broadband microcomb. Here, we theoretically and experimentally study the soliton conversion efficiency between the narrowband input pulse and the two outputs of a four-port integrated microcavity, namely the 'Drop' and 'Through' ports. We simultaneously measure on-chip, single-soliton conversion efficiencies of 45% and 25% for the two broadband comb outputs at the 'Drop' and 'Through' ports of a 48.9 GHz free-spectral range micro-ring resonator, obtaining a total conversion efficiency of 72%.

In many disciplines, states that emerge in open systems far from equilibrium are determined by a few global parameters 1,2 . These states can often mimic thermodynamic equilibrium, a classic example being the oscillation threshold of a laser 3 that resembles a phase transition in condensed matter. However, many classes of states cannot form spontaneously in dissipative systems, and this is the case for cavity solitons 2 that generally need to be induced by external perturbations, as in the case of optical memories 4,5 . In the past decade, these highly localized states have enabled important advancements in microresonator-based optical frequency combs 6,7 . However, the very advantages that make cavity solitons attractive for memories-their inability to form spontaneously from noise-have created fundamental challenges. As sources, microcombs require spontaneous and reliable initiation into a desired state that is intrinsically robust 8-20 . Here we show that the slow non-linearities of a free-running microresonator-filtered fibre laser 21 can transform temporal cavity solitons into the system's dominant attractor. This phenomenon leads to reliable self-starting oscillation of microcavity solitons that are naturally robust to perturbations, recovering spontaneously even after complete disruption. These emerge repeatably and controllably into a large region of the global system parameter space in which specific states, highly stable over long timeframes, can be achieved., (© 2022. Compact terahertz (THz) functional devices are greatly sought after for high-speed wireless communication, biochemical sensing, and non-destructive inspection. However, controlled THz generation, along with transport and detection, has remained a challenge especially for chip-scale devices due to low-coupling efficiency and unavoidable absorption losses. Here, based on the topological protection of electromagnetic waves, we demonstrate nonlinear generation and topologically tuned confinement of THz waves in an engineered lithium niobate chip forming a wedge-shaped Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice. Experimentally measured band structures provide direct visualization of the THz localization in the momentum space, while robustness of the confined mode against chiral perturbations is also analyzed and compared for both topologically trivial and nontrivial regimes. Such topological control of THz waves may bring about new possibilities in the realization of THz integrated circuits, promising for advanced photonic applications., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

A witness of non-Markovianity based on the Hilbert-Schmidt speed (HSS), a special type of quantum statistical speed, has been recently introduced for low-dimensional quantum systems. Such a non-Markovianity witness is particularly useful, being easily computable since no diagonalization of the system density matrix is required. We investigate the sensitivity of this HSS-based witness to detect non-Markovianity in various high-dimensional and multipartite open quantum systems with finite Hilbert spaces. We find that the time behaviors of the HSS-based witness are always in agreement with those of quantum negativity or quantum correlation measure. These results show that the HSS-based witness is a faithful identifier of the memory effects appearing in the quantum evolution of a high-dimensional system with a finite Hilbert space.

Waveguides play a pivotal role in the full deployment of terahertz communication systems. Besides signal transporting, innovative terahertz waveguides are required to provide versatile signal-processing functionalities. Despite fundamental components, such as Bragg gratings, have been recently realized, they typically rely on complex hybridization, in turn making it extremely challenging to go beyond the most elementary functions. Here, we propose a universal approach, in which multiscale-structured Bragg gratings can be directly etched on metal-wires. Such an approach, in combination with diverse waveguide designs, allows for the realization of a unique platform with remarkable structural simplicity, yet featuring unprecedented signal-processing capabilities. As an example, we introduce a four-wire waveguide geometry, amenable to support the low-loss and low-dispersion propagation of polarization-division multiplexed terahertz signals. Furthermore, by engraving on the wires judiciously designed Bragg gratings based on multiscale structures, it is possible to independently manipulate two polarization-division multiplexed terahertz signals. This platform opens up new exciting perspectives for exploiting the polarization degree of freedom and ultimately boosting the capacity and spectral efficiency of future terahertz networks., (© 2022. We demonstrate dynamical topological phase transitions in evolving Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices made of interacting soliton arrays, which are entirely driven by nonlinearity and thereby exemplify an emergent nonlinear topological phenomenon. The phase transitions occur from the topologically trivial-to-nontrivial phase in periodic succession with crossovers from the topologically nontrivial-to-trivial regime. The signature of phase transition is the gap-closing and reopening point, where two extended states are pulled from the bands into the gap to become localized topological edge states. Crossovers occur via decoupling of the edge states from the bulk of the lattice.
