Melanoma, primarily caused by solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, can be prevented by the use of sunscreens. However, the use of synthetic sunscreens raises environmental concerns. Natural compounds with antioxidant photoprotective properties and cytotoxic effects against cancer cells can be promising for the prevention and treatment of melanoma with less environmental effect. This study focuses on Melaleuca leucadendron essential oil (EO) for photoprotection and antitumor applications. EO was hydrodistilled from M. leucadendron leaves with a 0.59% yield. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry detected monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Nanoemulsions were prepared with (NE-EO) and without EO (NE-B) using the phase inversion method, showing good stability, spherical or oval morphology, and a pseudoplastic profile. Photoprotective activity assessed spectrophotometrically showed that the NE-EO was more effective than NE-B and free EO. Antioxidant activity evaluated by DPPH and ABTS methods indicated that pure and nanoemulsified EO mainly inhibited the ABTS radical, showing IC50 40.72 and 5.30 µg/mL, respectively. Cytotoxicity tests on L-929 mouse fibroblasts, NGM human melanocyte, B16-F10 melanoma, and MeWo human melanoma revealed that EO and NE-EO were more cytotoxic to melanoma cells than to non-tumor cells. The stable NE-EO demonstrates potential for melanoma prevention and treatment. Further research is required to gain a better understanding of these activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional agriculture represents the most-extensive food-producing segment in the world. However, these agroecosystems are widely and closely associated with rural poverty, reflecting the dualism between the subsistence and the commodity-producing sector in the peripheric countries. Therefore, socially adapted technologies may be a reliable and helpful methodology to enhance subsistence crop production. Humic substances are natural organic biostimulants extractable as water suspensions from renewable sources such as agricultural biomass and farming residues. These easy-to-handle extracts may be mixed with plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and used as biostimulants within a low-cost technological application in the circular economy strategy. Few investigations have been focused on the use of biostimulant practices on marginal or subsistence crops. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) are two essential foods for poor communities of rural territories in tropical and subtropical countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the foliar application of a humic/PGPB mixed biostimulant on cassava and okra crops grown in an agricultural soil with very low natural fertility. In pot trials, the applied biostimulant improved the plant development with a 200% increase of the root weight in cassava, while the preservation of active diazotrophic bacteria was improved by 10- and 100-times in cassava and okra in the mixed formulation with humic acid. In real field systems, the plant treatment increased the yield of cassava and okra by 70% and 50%, respectively thereby allowing a simultaneous nitrogen savings with the best yield performance obtained at the lower N fertilization rate. The use of biostimulants can play a role in the transition process, helping the food security and the autonomy of impoverished farmers. Combining the elements of traditional knowledge and modern science is essential to create innovative technologies enabling the sustainable management of agroecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of the metal incorporation into hydroxyapatites on the deactivation behavior of the solids were examined in the esterification of glycerol (EG) reaction. The introduction of Cu, Co, or Ni ions by ion exchange in calcium-deficient hydroxyapatites resulted in active catalysts for the EG reaction. The metal contents were varied from 2.0 to 17.0%, providing better performances at rather high metal contents. Part of metal species existed in the hydroxyapatite lattice structure and also as isolated Cu2+, Ni2+, and Co2+ entities on the surface, as shown by XPS and EPR. The effects of the reaction temperature, reaction time, and glycerol to acetic acid molar ratios were deeply investigated. The spent solids used in this study were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, chemical analyses, EPR, and XPS. The Cu2+–OH acid pairs could promote a superior catalytic performance of Cu-containing hydroxyapatites due to the resistance of these solids against leaching of the active species, which is even better than those of Co and Ni-containing counterparts with high metal contents. Cu into hydroxyapatite had a good reusability and long-term utilization for five consecutive cycles of 24 h under a glycerol to acetic acid molar ratio of 0.25 at 80 °C, and longer reaction times provide triacetin formation. This was due to the fact that Cu was stabilized by interacting with Ca, PO4, and OH sites into the hydroxyapatite lattice, being highly active for the EG reaction. The results also revealed that isolated Cu2+ sites played an important role in enhancing the glycerol conversion, intrinsically due to the Cu-containing hydroxyapatites ability to avoid strong adsorption of glycerol oligomers on the catalytic sites.
