Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Flight dynamic-based physical models are employed to assess the risk of runway overruns, predicting risk based on the metric given by the distance to a controllable speed of 80 knots after landing. The analysis incorporates Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data from 711 flights. Despite using observed flight data from flights without accidents as inputs, the physical model’s risk predictions frequently exceed the observed risk metric, showing that the predicted risk metrics of the physical model are biased. To address this discrepancy, statistical models are designed to adjust the physical model’s predictions by incorporating an additive error correction. Two correction approaches are evaluated: linear regression and D-vine copula regression. Linear regression fails to account for tail asymmetry, whereas D-vine copula regression does. Findings indicate that both correction methods enhance the physical model’s accuracy relative to the observed risk metric, with D-vine copula regression achieving a closer match. To further refine the prediction of the risk metric, particularly in the tail of the distribution, numerous predictions are simulated using dependent input values generated using fitted R-vine copula models of the QAR data. Integrating these simulated dependent inputs and error corrections, the authors achieve a more accurate representation of the observed risk metric distribution and tail probabilities. This improvement is confirmed by comparing the Hellinger pairwise distances between the predicted and observed risk metric densities within the 2500 to 3000-meter range, where the D-vine copula regression error model with dependent inputs shows the smallest discrepancy. The results underscore the importance of considering asymmetric dependencies among input values to enhance the precision of runway overrun risk assessments.

This paper presents an ultra-broadband, low-loss, flexible liquid crystal polymer substrate-to-substrate interconnect with a bandwidth of more than 130 GHz. The transition discontinuity was minimized by maintaining both the reference impedance and the electromagnetic field conformity across the transition from alumina substrate to flip-chip foil. Therefore, more than 600 $\mu$m long flexible flip-chip interconnects can be realized for bridging millimeter-wave sub-modules and enabling ultra-broadband heterogeneous system design with a measured return loss of above 20 dB. Furthermore, the interconnect can realize ramp interconnections between monolithic microwave integrated circuits or substrates with different substrate heights due to the flexible foil substrate. Minimum parasitic radiation at the transition is realized through a closely spaced signal-to-ground connection. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed interconnect against lateral misalignment in the assembly is presented through simulation and measurement. An outstanding insertion loss of less than 0.3 dB per transition over a bandwidth of more than 130 GHz is shown.

Abstract Mutations in glucocerebrosidase cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher’s disease and are the most common risk factor for Parkinson’s disease. Therapies to restore the enzyme’s function in the brain hold great promise for treating the neurological implications. Thus, we developed blood-brain barrier penetrant therapeutic molecules by fusing transferrin receptor-binding moieties to β-glucocerebrosidase (referred to as GCase-BS). We demonstrate that these fusion proteins show significantly increased uptake and lysosomal efficiency compared to the enzyme alone. In a cellular disease model, GCase-BS rapidly rescues the lysosomal proteome and lipid accumulations beyond known substrates. In a mouse disease model, intravenous injection of GCase-BS leads to a sustained reduction of glucosylsphingosine and can lower neurofilament-light chain plasma levels. Collectively, these findings demonstrate the potential of GCase-BS for treating GBA1-associated lysosomal dysfunction, provide insight into candidate biomarkers, and may ultimately open a promising treatment paradigm for lysosomal storage diseases extending beyond the central nervous system.

AIM: To examine the efficacy and safety of micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) versus selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in a large cohort of primarily African American and Hispanic patients. METHODS: A single center retrospective comparative cohort review conducted at Cook County Health facilities that included patients with a diagnosis of open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who received an SLT or MLT procedure between January 2017 and May 2021. RESULTS: Totally 131 eyes of 99 patients were analyzed. The 77 eyes received SLT and 54 received MLT. Seven out of 77 eyes in the SLT group (9.1%) and 1 out of 54 eyes in the MLT group (1.9%) had an IOP spike (defined as > 5 mm Hg) at either 1h or 1wk after procedure (P=0.05, Chi-squared test with Haldane-Anscombe correction). The procedure failure rate at one year was 50% for SLT and 48% for MLT (P=0.31). CONCLUSION: MLT has a significantly lower incidence of pressure spikes and a similar treatment failure rate at 1-year post-procedure, demonstrating that it is a reasonable alternative compared to SLT.

The dataset presented in this paper consists of sentiment information extracted from image and text data of financial subreddit posts. Members of these subreddits post about their trading behavior, express their opinions, and discuss capital market trends. Their posts contain sentiment information on financial topics as well as signaling information on trading decisions. Frequently, members post screenshots of their portfolios from their mobile broker apps. We collected the posts, processed them to extract sentiment scores using various methods, and anonymized them. The dataset consists therefore not of any content from the posts or information about the author, but the processed sentiment information within the post. Further financial tickers mentioned in the posts are tracked, such that the effect of sentiment in the posts can be attributed to financial products and used in the context of financial forecasting.The posts were collected using the Reddit [2] and Pushshift APIs [3] and processed using an Amazon Web Services architecture. A fine-tuned MobileNets artificial neural network [4] was used to classify images into four distinct categories, which had been determined in a preliminary analysis. The categories included classical memes, number posts (e.g. screenshots of mobile broker portfolios), text posts (e.g. screenshots from twitter) and chart posts (e.g. other financial screenshots, such as charts). The reason for the classification of images into the four categories is that the images are so inherently different, that different extraction methods had to be applied for each category. OCR – methods [5] were used to extract text from images. Custom methods were applied to extract sentiment and other information from the resulting text. The data [1] is available on a 20-minute basis and can be used in many areas, such as financial forecasting and analyzing sentiment dynamics in social media posts.

Background. Assessment of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the most reliable, though invasive method for evaluation of portal hypertension. Non-invasive, elastography-based techniques are well established in diagnosis, but not in monitoring of portal hypertension. The aim of our prospective study was to determine the value of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography technique of the liver and spleen in diagnosis and monitoring of portal hypertension. Methods. We prospectively assessed portal hypertension by HVPG and corresponding elastography of the liver and spleen in 31 patients with liver cirrhosis and an indication for primary prophylaxis by non-cardio selective beta-blockers. Investigations were performed at baseline and a follow-up visit after 6-8 weeks. To address the known large variability of values for spleen elastography, well-defined corresponding areas in the spleen were used for baseline and follow-up elastography. Sensitivity, specificity, and AUC-ROC values for both spleen and liver elastography monitoring of portal hypertension were calculated. Results. Liver but not spleen elastography significantly correlated with HVPG results and was suitable for initial evaluation of portal hypertension. However, changes in HVPG results did not show any correlation with alterations of ARFI values from baseline to follow-up visits both for liver and spleen elastography. Spleen stiffness results were not homogeneous across the whole organ differing significantly between the upper, hilar, and bottom placed investigation areas. Conclusions. In this prospective study ARFI-based assessment of liver elastography showed itself suitable for initial assessment but not for monitoring of portal hypertension. Spleen elastography was not appropriate for both, evaluation and monitoring of portal hypertension. A possible explanation for this new data that are in some contrast to previously published results is the degree of portal hypertension in our study, a comparatively short follow-up period, and well-defined investigation areas for spleen elastography in repetitive ARFI investigations.
