In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the recycling of organic materials such as paper mill biosolids (PB) and biochar for use as soil amendments. However, the benefits of co-application of PB and biochar and its effects on soil phosphorus (P) availability remain unknown. An incubation study was conducted on two acidic soils to assess the effect of two PB types (2.5% w/w) co-applied with three rates (0%, 2.5%, and 5% w/w) of pine (Pinus strobus L.) biochar on soil P fractions. An unfertilized control and a mineral NP fertilizer were used as a reference. Soil P fractions were determined by Hedley procedure after 2 and 16 wk of incubation. Material fractionation indicated that the PB containing the highest total P and the lowest Al content had the highest proportion of labile P, whereas most P in the biochar was in a stable form. The incubation study revealed that the P-rich PB increased P availability in both soils to a level comparable to mineral fertilizer at the end of the incubation. The addition of biochar to PB, however, did not affect soil P availability, but the highest rate induced a conversion of P fixed to Al and Fe oxides towards recalcitrant forms, particularly in the sandy loam soil. We conclude that co-applying biochar and PB could be more beneficial than application biochar alone and soils amended with such a mixture would be expected to release part of their P slowly over a longer period of time.

Amending croplands with forest residues may help in restoring soil properties in fields subject to intensive land management. Despite their known benefits when applied separately, co-application of wood biochar with paper mill biosolids (PB) has seen little investigation under field conditions. A study was initiated in Québec, QC, Canada, to determine the effect of a single application of wood biochar with and without PB on the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability of two pH-neutral to alkaline loamy soils. Biochar at 0, 10, and 20 Mg dry weight·ha−1 and PB at 30 Mg wet weight·ha−1 were applied before planting of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in 2018. Residual effect of this co-application was determined under soybean and corn in the subsequent year. In both years, corn received supplemental N and P from mineral fertilizers according to local agronomic recommendations. Co-applying biochar and PB reduced soil NO3-N availability in the year of application and decreased corn yield by 1.0 Mg·ha−1 compared with biochar or PB applied alone, but these amendments did not affect soybean yields. In the following year, the previous biochar addition increased soybean yield by 0.6 Mg·ha−1 but had little effect on corn. For both years, biochar addition induced a large increase in soil Mehlich-3 P. This study revealed that wood biochar positively impacted P status of these soils but was not a source of N to crops even when co-applied with PB.

Acidification and metal mobility may present challenges in soil receiving paper mill biosolids (PB). Co-applying biochar and PB could help prevent these issues, but its effect must be assessed. The objective of this 224 d incubation study was to evaluate the effect of amending two acidic soils, a clay and sandy loam, with two PB types varying in pH (PB1, pH = 7.80; and PB2, pH = 4.51) co-applied with three rates (0%, 2.5%, and 5% w/w) of pine (Pinus strobus L.) biochar on soil pH and macro- (P, K, Ca, and Mg) and micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn). In both soils, co-applying biochar and PB significantly increased soil pH and extractable K concentration compared with PB-only application, whereas amending with PB significantly increased soil extractable P concentration compared with the unamended soil. In comparison with PB only, co-applying 5% biochar and PB decreased extractable Cu concentration in both soils and extractable Fe concentration in the sandy loam soil. This study showed that co-applying biochar and PB can be more beneficial to agricultural soils than application of PB alone by supplying nutrients and helping prevent metal toxicity by raising pH, especially in acidic sandy soils.

Ludwig Bethcke (1829-1911) war ein bedeutender hallischer Stadtverordneter, Bankier und Vorsitzender der Industrie- und Handelskammer Halle (Saale) und damit wichtiger Akteur in der Spätphase der Industrialisierung. Er engagierte sich intensiv für eine möglichst freizügige Wirtschafts- und Industriepolitik mit wenigen Handelsschranken und Grenzen und setzte sich intensiv für Projekte der Elektrifizierung und besseren Mobilität (Eisenbahn) ein. Als Bankier bestimmte er in vielen Aufsichtsräten oder als Vorstandsmitglied wirtschaftsnaher Vereine die Strategien dieser Zeit mit. Sein politisches Engagement floss besonders in seinen Beiträgen zum Einkommenssteuergesetz 1891 ein. Nach seinem Tod stiftete er einen großen Teil seines Vermögens für soziale Projekte, Einrichtungen und Berufsbildungsanstalten. Ludwig Bethcke (1829-1911) was an important Halle city councillor, banker and chairman of the Halle (Saale) Chamber of Industry and Commerce and thus an important player in the late phase of industrialisation. He was intensely committed to an economic and industrial policy that was as permissive as possible, with few trade barriers and borders, and was a strong advocate of electrification projects and better mobility (railways). As a banker, he helped determine the strategies of the time on many supervisory boards or as a board member of business-related associations. His political commitment was particularly evident in his contributions to the Income Tax Act of 1891. After his death, he donated a large part of his fortune to social projects, institutions and vocational training institutes.

Herein, paper mill waste sludge (PMS) from two different sources has been investigated to extract calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 by a facile and inexpensive extraction process. This green process exploits typical chemical precipitation (CP) in an aqueous medium at room temperature to develop an economically and industrially viable technique for the effective utilization of calcium-containing waste sludge. PMS samples, collected from local paper mill plants of Bangladesh, were the main precursors wherein HCl and NaOH were utilized for chemical treatment. The as-synthesized products were analyzed by a variety of characterization tools including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) elemental analyses. Our studies confirm that the extracted product contains Ca(OH)2 as a major content, albeit it also includes CaCO3 phase formed owing to the inescapable carbonation process from the surrounding environment. The particle size of the synthesized products is in the range of 450 - 500 nm estimated from SEM micrographs. The crystallite domain size of the same estimated from XRD analyses and was found to be ~47 nm and ~31 nm respectively for product-A and product-B considering major (101) Bragg peak of Ca(OH)2. The yield percentage of the isolated products is about 65% for samples collected from both sources.

ScandFibre Logistics AB (SFL) är ett logistikföretag inom järnvägsindustrin och ingår i BillerudKorsnäs-koncernen. SFL:s uppgift är att för pappersbruk ägda av BillerudKorsnäs, samt ett fåtal externa kunder, erbjuda logistiklösningar via järnväg för brukens leveranstransporter till cirka 50 olika terminaler i Europa. I samband med det interna arbetet med att strategiskt effektivisera hanteringen av vagnstransporterna syftar detta examensarbete till att ge kunskap och undersöka hur transporter av tomvagnar från svenska terminaler tillbaka till bruken kan effektiviseras med hänsyn till transport- och hyreskostnader. Information har empiriskt samlats från intervjuer med flertal av SFL:s anställda, genom deltagande observationer och inhämtade rådata från SFL:s databas. Med en deskriptiv metod kartlagdes SFL:s verksamhet i en nulägesbeskrivning som utgjorde startpunkten för examensarbetets modellskapande. Från modellskapandet presenteras examensarbetets förslag till en teoretisk bokningsmodell. Denna bokningsmodell uppnår en teoretisk tids- och kostnadseffektivisering med matematisk logik och olika strikta samt tidskänsliga bokningskriterier som genererar bokningsförslag vars prioritering ligger vid korta transportsträckor och ett tidseffektivt utnyttjande av tomvagnar som anländer till bruken enligt JIT-principen. Med anledning av att modellen byggs på antaganden och teori bör dess resultat granskas av operativ bokningspersonal innan praktisk tillämpning., ScandFibre Logistics AB (SFL) is a logistics company operating in the railway industry and is a part of BillerudKorsnäs. SFL offers logistic solutions for railway transport of products from BillerudKorsnäs’, as well as a few other external customers’, different paper mills to roughly 50 different terminals in Europe. In conjunction with SFL:s own interest of developing the efficiency of their own operations and handling of wagon transports, this master’s thesis aims to improve knowledge and investigate how to streamline the transport of empty wagons from Swedish terminals back to the paper mills, in regards to transport and rental costs. Information have been gathered through interviews with several employees, through participating observations, and with the extraction of raw data from SFL’s database. With a descriptive method the overall operation at SFL could be outlined, serving as the base for a model development phase. This phase resulted in this thesis’ proposed bookings model for empty wagon transports. The model acquires a theoretical streamline way of booking empty wagon transports in such a manner that wagons arrive at the paper mills according to the JIT-principle. The model succeeds in doing this by generating booking proposals using mathematical logic and time-sensitive booking criteria, with the focus being transports of short distances; in theory also meaning a time efficient use of each wagon. As the model is theoretically constructed and relies on several generalizing assumptions, its booking proposals should always be evaluated from a perspective of practicality by executive booking personnel.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed At a paper manufacturing mill (PML) that had been previously part of an integrated pulp (bisulphite) and paper mills industry, cyanobacterial blooms were observed in the mill’s aerated stabilization basin (ASB) ponds at about 3 years after pulping had been discontinued. This study aimed to determine the factors that led to bloom occurrences and potential control strategies applicable to the paper manufacturing mill’s, aerated stabilization basin system that discharges wastewaters into a coastal lake. Following discontinuation of pulping, the colour of the wastewaters reduced to low levels (~ 10 Hazen units or less), while the levels of nutrient remained potentially supportive of cyanobacteria growth with total phosphorus at ~ 0.1 mg/L and total nitrogen at > 2.5 mg/L. Incidences of blooms in the ABS were associated with preceding average monthly rainfalls and wind speeds being less (~ 44% and ~ 7%, respectively) and average direct sunlight hours being greater (~ 9%) than the long-term average values. Zinc was investigated for control of cyanobacteria as this metal is less toxic to aquatic organisms and microflora than copper algaecides. In laboratory culture trials, zinc was found to inhibit growth of M. aeruginosa (strain MIC338) and Pseudanabaena sp. when dosed at ~ 2.5 mg/L. The inhibition of cyanobacteria by zinc was found to vary between ASB pond samples which had different in situ chlorophyll a levels. This study found that the PML wastewaters investigated can be supportive of cyanobacterial growth to bloom levels after discontinuation of pulping processes and that zinc has potential as a cyanobacteria control agent.

The organic matter present in six industrial wastewaters (pulp and paper mill, brewery, textile, dairy, slaughterhouse effluents and a municipal landfill leachate) has been studied in this work using three analytical techniques: excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The pulp and paper mill effluent shows characteristic signals of the presence of lignins, carbohydrates and carboxylic acids, as well as sulfate, carbonate and sulfonates (coming from surfactants used in the cleaning of tanks). The main constituents of the brewery effluent are peptides and proteins coming mainly from spent yeast and diatomite filters (the presence of the latter was confirmed by Sisingle bondO bands in the FTIR spectrum). The municipal landfill leachate is characterized by the majority presence of humic substances (typical of an old landfill) and a residual presence of small peptides, amino acids and carboxylic acids. Additionally, several inorganic compounds were identified by FTIR, such as nitrate, sulfate, phosphate and cyanide ions. The textile effluent from a cotton-based industry contains carbohydrates, carboxylic acids and sulfonates, which can act as auxochromes in the textile industry. The dairy effluent comprises amino acids and small peptides coming from the biodegradation of milk and whey in addition to carbohydrates (lactose) and carboxylic acids (mainly lactic acid). The presence of tyrosine-like peaks B in the EEMF spectrum of the slaughterhouse effluent indicates the existence of small peptides and amino acids coming from the biodegradation of blood proteins. Additionally, residual glucose, fatty acids, phosphate and sulfate were also identified in this effluent.

På pappersmaskin 11 i Hallsta pappersbruk tillverkas högglansigt papper som bleks med väteperoxid. Om väteperoxiden som finns kvar efter blekningen, kallat restperoxid, kommer ut på pappersmaskinen sliter detta på termovalsarna, vilket påverkar slutprodukten. Det finns en bakteriekultur på bruket, bestående av släktet Tepidiphilus som bryter ner väteperoxiden med hjälp av katalas och hindrar den från att komma ut på maskinen. Om bakterierna slås ut, av exempelvis ogynnsamma förhållanden, märks detta genom att restperoxiden ökar. Målet med detta arbete är att försöka identifiera vilka faktorer som påverkar bakterierna och lägga fram ett förslag för hur man kan förhindra uppkomsten av restperoxid. För att utföra detta användes i första hand principalkomponentanalys, samt så studerades hur olika faktorer förändrades i förhållanden till uppkomsten av restperoxid. Ett antal parametrar kunde identifieras baserat på tillgängliga data. Dock kan inga absoluta slutsatser dras då det inte går att bekräfta några teorier med labbförsök eller genom att manipulera processen. De parametrar som tros ha störst påverkan är mek. renat färg, rest-aluminium, grumlighet, manganhalten i vatten, pH för kar K0203, returmälden samt inloppslådan och klorhalterna som uppmätts för mek. renat total klor, RVV1 fri klor, varmvatten total klor och mek. renat fri klor. Dessa parametrar bör därför övervakas framåt, och kan i det fall att restperoxid återigen uppkommer antingen bekräftas eller dementeras deras faktiska påverkan och samspel för bakteriernas välmående. Paper machine 11 in Hallsta paper mill produces high-gloss paper that is bleached with hydrogen peroxide. If the hydrogen peroxide that remains after the bleaching, called residual peroxide, gets out on the paper machine, this wears down the thermal rollers, which affects the final product. There is a bacterial culture at the mill, consisting of the genus Tepidiphilus, which breaks down the hydrogen peroxide with the help of catalase and prevents it from getting out to the machine. If the bacteria are killed, for example by unfavourable conditions, this is noticeable by an increase in residual peroxide. The goal of this project is to try to identify which factors affect the bacteria and put forward a proposal for how to prevent the occurrence of residual peroxide. To carry this out, principal component analysis was primarily used, and how different factors changed in relation to the appearance of residual peroxide was studied. Several parameters could be identified based on the available data. However, no conclusive conclusions could be drawn as it is not possible to confirm any theories with lab tests or by manipulating the process. The parameters believed to have the greatest influence are coloration of mechanically cleaned water (mech. water), residual aluminium, turbidity, manganese content of the water, pH for tank K0203, the returning pulp suspension as well as the headbox and the chlorine levels for mech. water total chlorine, RVV1 free chlorine, hot water total chlorine and mech. water free chlorine. These parameters should therefore be monitored going forward, and if residual peroxide occurs again, their possible interactions and actual impact on the well-being of the bacteria can either be confirmed or denied

Recovery of phosphorus (P) from wastewater has led to growing public concern considering its scarcity and future availability as well as its detrimental environmental impacts. However, the recovered P is inevitably contaminated with co-existing antibiotics like tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethazine (SMT) which will pose serious risks to the health of human and animals after being spread to the environment. In this study, we propose a novel scheme that can recover P from synthetic wastewater and at the same time degrade the co-existing antibiotics. To achieve such a goal, a series of biochar (BC) were prepared from calcination of waste sludge and were used both as the adsorbent for P recovery and as the catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and antibiotic degradation. Results showed that the sludge source (i.e. Sm: municipal sludge, Sp: paper mill sludge), calcination atmosphere (i.e. air-deficient, N2, vacuum) and temperature (i.e. 600 and 800 °C) exhibited significant influence on P adsorption capacity. Generally, the BC calcined in N2 showed better P uptake, and increase of calcination temperature from 600 °C to 800 °C could further improve P uptake. Though BCp-N-600 (prepared from Sp in N2 at 600 °C) showed faster and higher P uptake (56.3 mg/g) than its counterpart BCm-N-600 (33.2 mg/g), BCm-N-600 showed stronger catalytic activity and more stable performance in the complex pollutant system (P + SMT). It was proposed that P was recovered primarily through the chemisorption and precipitation mechanism, while SMT was nearly completely degraded primarily by the ROS generated from PMS activation.

Causticizing process of pulp and paper mills, is highly energy intensive and environmentally unsafe. We report environmental friendly electro-electrodialysis (EED) process using in-house prepared cation exchange membranes (CEMs) for NaOH production from green liquor solution (GLS) of agro-based paper mills. Different composite CEMs with varied composition of sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) incorporated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPK) were synthesized. Best optimized CEM (SPK-3 with 3.0 wt% SGO loading) exhibited 1.75 mmol·g−1 cation exchange capacity, 32.01% water uptake, 11.41% swelling ratio, conductivity 0.037 S·cm−1, and 0.97 counter-ion transport number with high alkaline and thermo-mechanical stabilities. Industrial GLS was used for NaOH production by EED at 60 mA·cm−2current density. Optimized SPK-3 membrane produced 1.17 mol·L−1 of NaOH with 61.4% current efficiency (η), and 2.58 kW·h·kg−1 energy consumption (EC) during 4 h of EED process. Under similar operating conditions, pristine (SPK), and commercial CEM (FKB-PK-130), showed inferior performance. Longevity of SPK-3 CEM was assessed with industrial GLS for fifty cycles of EED experiments 4 h duration each. Reported results are promising for sustainable NaOH production from industrial GLS of pulp and paper mills, and provide a resourceful alternate for industrial waste.

Pulp and paper mills are known large emitters of air pollution creating potential environmental challenges and human health impacts. This study assesses air pollution and associated impacts from connected pulp and paper facilities which operate in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada, and Madawaska, Maine, United States (US). Despite operating within two regulatory jurisdictions on both sides of the international border (in Canada and the US), the mills have exceeded their approvals to operate and national air quality regulations multiple times between 2010 and 2017. Previous studies have linked many types of cancer as well as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases to air pollution emitted by pulp and paper mills, making this an important regional issue in Canada and the US. While potential environmental and community impacts are likely similar on both sides of the international border, emissions from each side are not reported on the other, and few studies have been conducted on either side. Historic and ongoing lack of local epidemiological health and environmental impact studies and recommendations for improvements to mill operations to improve environmental and human health are presented.

This paper reports on the manufacture of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from Prosopis juliflora leaf extracts. Various methods of characterization were used, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope TEM. ZnO NPs has a hexagonal wurtzite structure with a preferred orientation of 101 planes, according to XRD. The functional groups found in ZnO NPs isolated from leaves are responsible for the FT-IR peaks that correspond to them. The morphology of the produced nanoparticles is a sphere-like form, as shown in the SEM pictures. TEM examination revealed ZnO NPs with a size of 50–55 nm. These ZnO NPs were used to remediate pollutants in paper mill effluents, and they were able to remove 86% of the organic pollutants from the sample at 0.05 mg/L dose and reduce 89% of the organic pollutants during a 5-h reflex time. Meanwhile, for the photocatalysis of paper mill effluents, it has been noted that COD was removed by 74.30%, 63.23%, and 57.96% for the first, second, and third cycles, respectively.

The use of membranes in integrated water systems has garnered increasing attention in paper mills operating with virgin fibres, with documented closed water loops in industry. However, limited research exists on the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) in mills operating with 100% recycled fibres (RCF) and closed water systems, as these result in the introduction and accumulation of insoluble contaminants in the effluent. This study investigated the effect of transmembrane pressure (TMP) and feed organic load on the flux, types of fouling, and organic separation with UF membranes in a recycled paper mill using 100% RCF. The high feed organic load caused inevitable fouling, limiting the highest achievable flux. However, the TMP could be manipulated to improve on or exacerbate the process performance, within the range that was set as a result of the feed's characteristics. Low TMP (1.35 bar) generated the highest permeability and chemical oxygen demand removal, while higher TMPs produced higher fluxes and recoveries. The process was characterised by high initial fluxes, followed by cake formation, which dominated, and pore blockage. The excess cake formation induced cake filtration. This study shows the potential of UF membranes to be used as pre-treatment in filtering the process water in a recycled paper mill operating with 100% RCF, a critical step forward in implementing an integrated water system, and eventually closing the water loop.

Nowadays, demand of the pulp and paper production increases quickly. That increasing demand has led to demanding of eucalyptus plantation. That is why eucalyptus plantation has rapidly expanded and became the most planted tree species across the world over the last century. Not only because its unique characteristics, increasing of eucalyptus plantation also happened because its growing gives a socio-economic benefits, industrial benefits, and environmental impacts. However, increasing demand of eucalyptus certainly make availability of eucalyptus being determined, known as limited supply chain. Due to the increasing demand and limited supply chain, the eucalyptus wood supply should managed, by integrated the supply chain well. In this research study, the supply chain of eucalyptus wood for pulp and paper industry was diagnosed and divided into three degree, there are direct supply chain, extended supply chain, and ultimate supply chain. Four main stakeholders in this chain identified consisted of the eucalyptus seedling developers and sellers, the suppliers, the distribution centers, and the pulp and paper production plants.

Paper mill wastewater is a complex mixture of different organometallic pollutants with alkaline pH and toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study investigates major physicochemical parameters such as BOD (814.0 ± 2.84), COD (2289.0 ± 3.54), TDS (4128.0 ± 5.21), dissolved solid (3520.0 ± 4.85), suspended solids (608.0 ± 1.53), lignin (628 ± 2.24) and heavy metals along with organometallic pollutants from paper mill wastewater detected by gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometer technique. The organometallic pollutants such as decane, 2,9-dimethyl, eicosane, 2-bromotetradecane, 1,2-dihydro-1,4-diphenylphthalazine, benzene acetic acid, 4-[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]-, trimethylsilyl ester, and docosane were detected via. gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometry (GC–MS). These pollutants are highly toxic and cause significant adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The toxic effects of organometallic pollutants were tested on Heteropneustes fossilis (Stinging catfish) and Tubifex-tubifex (sludge worm) using different concentrations of wastewater (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Due to wastewater exposure Heteropneustes fossilis, toxic effects were observed, showing notable changes in the secondary lamellae (SL); primary lamellae (PL); mucous cell (MC); epithelial cell (EC); chloride cell (CHC). In Tubifex tubifex, minimum toxic effects were noted at the concentration of less than 25% up to 24 h of exposure and maximum at 48 h of exposure at 50% of the wastewater concentration. After 24 h wastewater exposure, the hemoglobin content was decreased, the body’s rear part became white, and body disintegration was observed in worms. In conclusion, the present study investigates that paper mill wastewater is toxic to the aquatic ecosystem and must be treated and assessed before discharge.
