This article summarizes a study conducted by the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC) on the rates of positive surgical margins (PSM) following partial nephrectomy (PN) for kidney tumors. The study found that high-volume centers had lower rates of PSM, indicating that centralization of care may be beneficial. The study also highlighted the importance of using ultrasound during the planning and resection of endophytic tumors and referring challenging cases to higher volume surgeons. The authors hope that this report will encourage urological surgeons to improve their surgical approach and achieve better PSM rates. Given the lack of formal dermatology education in medical schools, dermatology principles covered in board exam preparatory resources remain the only standardized concepts that all medical students across the USA universally learn. The primary objective of this study was to quantify the dermatology topics represented in UWorld and AMBOSS Step 1 and Step 2CK question banks. Our study found that 49% of the 655 questions on dermatology assessed the top 10 most prevalent skin diseases encountered in clinical practice with a variety of rare conditions also tested. Step 2CK question banks had a higher proportion of questions that assessed management of dermatological conditions. Furthermore, there was a large variability in the proportion of questions that included images of the condition. This study highlights the need and opportunity for standardization of dermatology teaching in medical school curricula to optimally prepare graduating physicians for future practice. In dermatology, the art and skill of morphologic assessment is key to generating logical differential diagnoses and understanding disease pathogenesis. Dr. Irwin M. Braverman, Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, is a master morphologist and his book, Skin Signs of Systemic Disease, provided key insights into the relationships between cutaneous lesions and internal disease. In an interview with Dr. Braverman, he stressed the importance morphology plays in how dermatologists diagnosis skin disorders.
