Abstract

The dynamics of a system composed of inelastic hard spheres or disks that are confined between two parallel vertically vibrating walls is studied (the vertical direction is defined as the direction perpendicular to the walls). The distance between the two walls is supposed to be larger than twice the diameter of the particles so that the particles can pass over each other, but still much smaller than the dimensions of the walls. Hence, the system can be considered to be quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-one-dimensional) in the hard spheres (disks) case. For dilute systems, a closed evolution equation for the one-particle distribution function is formulated that takes into account the effects of the confinement. Assuming the system is spatially homogeneous, the kinetic equation is solved approximating the distribution function by a two-temperatures (horizontal and vertical) gaussian distribution. The obtained evolution equations for the partial temperatures are solved, finding a very good agreement with Molecular Dynamics simulation results for a wide range of the parameters (inelasticity, height and density) for states whose projection over a plane parallel to the walls is homogeneous. In the stationary state, where the energy lost in collisions is compensated by the energy injected by the walls, the pressure tensor in the horizontal direction is analyzed and its relation with an instability of the homogenous state observed in the simulations is discussed., Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures, Accepted in Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment

We consider four subsets of the complexified spacetime algebra, namely the real even part, the real odd part, the imaginary even part and the imaginary odd part. This naturally leads to the four connected components of the Lorentz group, supplemented each time by an additional symmetry. Abstract

Comet C/2016 R2 PanSTARRS (hereafter C/2016 R2) presents an unusually high N2/CO abundance ratio, as well as a heavy depletion in H2O, making it the only known comet of its kind. Understanding its dynamical history is therefore of essential importance as it would allow us to gain a clearer understanding of the evolution of planetesimal formation in our Solar System. Two studies have independently estimated the possible origin of this comet from building blocks formed in a peculiar region of the protoplanetary disk, near the ice line of CO and N2. We intend to investigate the fates of objects formed from the building blocks in these regions. We hope to find a possible explanation for the lack of C/2016 R2-like comets in our Solar System. Using a numerical simulation of the early stages of Solar System formation, we track the dynamics of these objects in the Jumping Neptune scenario based on five different initial conditions for the protosolar disk. We integrate the positions of 250 000 planetesimals over time in order to analyze the evolution of their orbits and create a statistical profile of their expected permanent orbit. Results. We find that objects formed in the region of the CO- and N2- ice lines are highly likely to be sent towards the Oort Cloud or possibly ejected from the Solar System altogether on a relatively short timescale. In all our simulations, over 90% of clones formed in this region evolved into a hyperbolic trajectory, and between 1% and 10% were potentially captured by the Oort Cloud. The handful of comets that remained were either on long-period, highly eccentric orbits like C/2016 R2, or absorbed into the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. Comets formed <15 au were predominantly ejected early in the formation timeline. Abstract

The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

The third data release by the Gaia mission of the European Space (DR3) is the first release to provide the community with a large sample of observations for more than 150 thousand Solar System objects, including asteroids and natural planetary satellites. The release contains astrometry (over 23 million epochs) and photometry, along with average reflectance spectra of 60518 asteroids and osculating elements. We present an overview of the procedures that have been implemented over several years of development and tests to process Solar System data at the level of accuracy that Gaia can reach. We illustrate the data properties and potential with some practical examples. In order to allow the users of DR3 to best exploit the data, we explain the assumptions and approaches followed in the implementation of the data processing pipeline for Solar System processing, and their effects in terms of data filtering, optimisation, and performances. We then test the data quality by analysing post-fit residuals to adjusted orbits, the capacity of detecting subtle dynamical effects (wobbling due to satellites or shape and Yarkovsky acceleration), and to reproduce known properties of asteroid photometry (phase curves and rotational light curves). The DR3 astrometric accuracy is a clear improvement over the data published in DR2, which concerned a very limited sample of asteroids. The performance of the data reduction is met, and is illustrated by the capacity of detecting milliarcsecond-level wobbling of the asteroid photocentre that is due to satellite or shape effects and contributes to Yarkovsky effect measurements. Abstract

There have been 77 TNOs discovered to be librating in the distant transneptunian resonances (beyond the 2:1 resonance, at semimajor axes greater than 47.7~AU) in four well-characterized surveys: the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) and three similar prior surveys. Here we use the OSSOS Survey Simulator to measure their intrinsic orbital distributions using an empirical parameterized model. Because many of the resonances had only one or very few detections, $j$:$k$ resonant objects were grouped by $k$ in order to have a better basis for comparison between models and reality. We also use the Survey Simulator to constrain their absolute populations, finding that they are much larger than predicted by any published Neptune migration model to date; we also find population ratios that are inconsistent with published models, presenting a challenge for future Kuiper Belt emplacement models. The estimated population ratios between these resonances are largely consistent with scattering-sticking predictions, though further discoveries of resonant TNOs with high-precision orbits will be needed to determine whether scattering-sticking can explain the entire distant resonant population or not., Comment: Accepted for publication in Planetary Sciences Journal (PSJ)

11. Evaluation of risk management in a natalizumab home infusion procedure

Abstract

Natalizumab is a well-established disease-modifying therapy used in active multiple sclerosis (MS). The most serious adverse event is progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. For safety reasons, hospital implementation is mandatory. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has deeply affected hospital practices leading French authorities to temporarily authorize to administer the treatment at home. The safety of natalizumab home administration should be assessed to allow ongoing home infusion. The aim of the study is to describe the procedure and assess the safety in a home infusion natalizumab model. Patients presenting relapsing-remitting MS treated by natalizumab for over two years, non-exposed to John Cunningham Virus (JCV) and living in the Lille area (France) were included from July 2020 to February 2021 to receive natalizumab infusion at home every four weeks for 12 months. Teleconsultation occurrence, infusion occurrence, infusion cancelling, JCV risk management, annual MRI completion were analyzed. The number of teleconsultations allowing infusion was 365 (37 patients included in the analysis), all home infusions were preceded by a teleconsultation. Nine patients did not complete the one-year home infusion follow-up. Two teleconsultations canceled infusions. Two teleconsultations led to a hospital visit to assess a potential relapse. No severe adverse event was reported. All 28 patients who have completed the follow-up benefited from biannual hospital examination and JCV serologies and annual MRI. Our results suggested that the established home natalizumab procedure was safe using the university hospital home-care department. However, the procedure should be evaluated using home-based services outside the university hospital.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Climate change is modifying grape berry composition and affecting wine quality and typicity. We evaluated the effects of leaf‐to‐fruit ratio and exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application on the accumulation of primary and secondary metabolites in berries, in order to optimise climate change adaptation strategies. Methods and Results: A range of leaf‐to‐fruit ratios (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 leaves per bunch) and exogenous ABA (400 mg/L) applied to Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon fruiting‐cuttings in a greenhouse prior to veraison were evaluated over six consecutive growing seasons (2013–2018). Reducing the leaf‐to‐fruit ratio decreased berry sugar and anthocyanin concentration, slightly increased total organic acids, and modified the composition of free amino acids. Exogenous ABA significantly enhanced sugar and anthocyanin concentration and partially restored the balance of sugar and anthocyanins under a low leaf‐to‐fruit ratio, without altering free amino acid concentration or sugar to acids ratios. Conclusions: Combining manipulation of the leaf‐to‐fruit ratio with application of exogenous ABA offers a potential method to reduce berry sugar concentration, while maintaining anthocyanin concentration. 15. Immediate outcomes after transcatheter atrial septal defect closure by Amplatzer septal occluder in a large single centre cohort: The ASOlong study.

Abstract

Transcatheter closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs) with Amplatzer septal occluder (ASO) is the preferred technique when anatomically feasible. New devices, reported to be softer or with new design have been developed aiming to reduce the risk of adverse events. We aimed to assess the procedural outcomes after transcatheter closure of ASD with the ASO device in a large single centre registry including consecutively all children and adults (n = 2280, median age, 27 years [11; 49]; weight, 56 kg [32; 70]) from 1998 to 2021 (ASOlong registry). Most patients had balloon ASD sizing using the pull-through technique. Since 2005, nearly all procedures were guided using transthoracic echocardiography allowing procedures under local anesthesia in older children and adults. In four (0.2%) patients, ASD was closed from a jugular approach. Median ASO size was 22 mm [18; 28]. ASD closure was obtained with two and three devices in 71 and 1 cases respectively. Device/weight ratio was 0.4 [0.3–0.6], with a ratio ≥ 1.5 in 25 children (0.1%). Overall procedural success rate was 97.1% (95% CI: 96.4–97.8%) underestimated by patients with ASD considered not eligible after balloon calibration only. Device migration occurred in 17 (0.7%) patients successfully retried transcatheter in 13 cases and surgically in 4. No death was observed. Major peri-procedural adverse events occurred in 7 (0.3% 95% CI: 0.1–0.6) patients including 4 repaired arteriovenous fistulas. Life-threatening adverse events occurred in 3 patients (2 acute aortic erosion with haemopericardium, on day 2 after catheterization and 1 sigmoid colon dissection of unclear mechanism, requiring emergency surgery). There was a trend toward a higher rate of major events among children with device/weight ratio ≥ 1.5 (4.0% versus 0.4%, P = 0.1). 16. Quality of life and outcomes of adults with troncus arteriosus.

Abstract

Truncus arteriosus (TA) is a rare lesion, defined by a single great vessel from which the pulmonary arteries, aorta, and coronary arteries arise. Operative correction has dramatically reduced mortality. However, the adult life of these patients is still affected by the burden of reinterventions. Quality of life (QoL) has become an important issue in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Accordingly, the focus has shifted from mere survival to a better QoL. Despite a good understanding of the longterm surgical outcomes, there are no data on the health-related quality of life following TA repair in those who reach adulthood. This study aimed to explore QOL and physical activity in a cohort of adults with TA. QOL was assessed using the 5-level EQ-5D version (EQ-5D-5L). Physical activity was assessed using the Ricci-Gagnon self-questionnaire. Ninety-three adult patients (age > 16 years on 31 December 2019) with TA were identified in our centre for this study. Of these, 64 (69%) participated and completed the questionnaires. Medical records were reviewed. Associations of QOL with patient's characteristics were assessed. Mean age was 24 years (±6.5) and 27 (41.5%) were male. Three of them did not undergo repair and were in Eisenmenger status. Age at repair was 136 days (±418). All repaired patients underwent reinterventions in childhood either by surgery or catheterism (from 1 to 10 reinterventions/patient) whereas 17 (26%) underwent reinterventions in adulthood. Overall, they reported a good QOL comparable to French population norms with a mean EQ-5D Index of 0.84 (±0.21). 41% patients reported to be active. Reinterventions in adulthood was the only variable associated with better QOL (P < 0.01). The distribution of the index values (QOL) according to of the number of reinterventions in adulthood is shown in Fig. 1. 17. Prognostic value of hemodynamic parameters in pulmonary arterial hypertension associated to congenital heart diseases.

Abstract

Limited data are available on the prognostic value of haemodynamic parameters in pulmonary arterial hypertension associated to congenital heart disease (PAH-CHD). The benefit of repeated invasive hemodynamic measurements in PAH-CHD patients remains controversial. The main objective of this study was to assess the prognostic value of haemodynamic variables in PAH-CHD. This bi-centre retrospective study included 109 patients with a median age of 47 [36-38] year-old with PAH-CHD (female, 69%). A multiparametric evaluation was performed, including clinical, hemodynamical, using a robust standardized approach based on Fick principle and oxygen consumption measurement, and cardiac magnetic resonance parameters (n = 44). Sixty-four (59%) patients had a pre-tricuspid defect. Eisenmenger syndrome was presented in 66 patients (60%). Fifty-three (49%) patients were in WHO/NYHA function class III or IV, heart rate was 80 beats.min [73–88], six-minutes walking-distance was 406 m [355–470] and oxygen saturation at rest was 91% [84–96]. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) was 10 Wood Units (WU) |5–16] and mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) 53 mmHg [41–69]. Eighty-four (77%) patients received PAH-specific drug therapy. Median follow-up was 17 months [10–32]. Primary outcome (death or transplantation) occurred in 29 (26%) (16 deaths, 8 underwent double-lung transplant, two cases with later atrial septal defect percutaneous closure, and 5 underwent heart-lung transplant). In multivariate analysis, right ventricular (RV) failure signs (HR 3.1; CI 95% 1.2–7.7; P = 0.01), heart rate (HR 1.1; CI 95% 1.01–1.1; P < 0.001), tricuspid annular plane excursion (TAPSE) (HR 0.84; IC 95% 0.73–0.96; P = 0.01) and PVR (HR 1.1; CI 95% 1.1–1.2; P < 0.001) remained significant predictors of death or transplantation (Fig. 1). Invasive assessment of haemodynamics in patients with PAH-CHD remains the cornerstone of their prognostic assessment. 18. Severe pediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension: Long-term outcomes of reverse Potts shunt and transplantation.

Abstract

Reverse Potts shunt (RPS) and lung or heart-lung transplantation are life extending surgical interventions for pediatric patients with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Robust criteria for identifying patients who will benefit from these procedures remain elusive. Based on our 30 years of experience, we sought to refine the surgical indications of RPS. This single-center retrospective cohort study included 61 consecutive pediatric patients with PAH managed by RPS (2004–2020) or transplantation (1988–2020). Their long-term outcomes were assessed. Compared to the 20 patients managed by RPS, the 41 transplant waitlist patients, of whom 28 were transplanted, were older (14.9 versus 8.0 years, P = 0.0001) and had worse right-ventricular impairment (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, 12.5 mm versus 18.0 mm, P = 0.03). After implementation of a high-priority allocation program in 2007, waitlist mortality decreased from 52.6% to 13.6% (P = 0.02) and survival raised from 57.1% to 74.7% after RPS and 55.6% to 77.2 after transplantation. At a median follow-up of 8.6 years after RPS and 5.9 years after transplantation, functional capacity had improved significantly, and PAH specific drug requirements had diminished markedly. The cumulative transplantation incidence after RPS was 0% and 25.3% at 5 and 10 years, respectively (Fig. 1). 19. Modified technique of percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation with the Sapien 3: Impact on procedure and early outcome.

Abstract

Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) with Sapien 3 valve is effective to treat right ventricle outflow (RVOT) dysfunction. Issues related to presenting and tricuspid valve injuries were reported with the initial implantation method. A modified technique was developed without pre-stenting and with a protective delivery method for valve implantation. We aimed to compare procedural results in the modified technique group (MTG) to matched patients in a conventional technique group (CTG). All consecutive procedures performed in the MTG over 9 months were matched based on RVOT type and size to consecutive procedures performed before. 27 patients were included in each group. Size of the Sapien 3 valves were 23 mm (n = 9), 26 mm (n = 9), 29 mm (n = 36). The two groups were similar regarding demographic data, RVOT type, pre-procedure hemodynamics. PPVI was performed in a single procedure in all patients of the MTG, whereas six (22.2%) patients of the CTG group had pre-stenting as a first step and valve implantation later (P = 0.02). Procedures were successful in all cases. Stent embolization was reported in two patients (7.4%) in the CTG, which were impacted in pulmonary arteries. Instability of a valve was observed in one case (3.7%) in the MTG, stabilized with two stents and an additional valve-in-valve implantation. Hemodynamics results were good in all cases without significant difference among the two groups (Table 1). Procedure duration and fluoroscopy times were significantly reduced in the MTG (48.1 versus 82.6 minutes, P < 0.0001; 15.2 versus 29.8 minutes, P = 0.0002). During follow-up, no stent fracture or valve dysfunction was noticed in both groups. PPVI without pre-stenting and with a protective delivery method of the Sapien 3 valve reduces significantly the procedure complexity, procedure duration and irradiation, while maintaining excellent hemodynamics results. 20. Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation: Long term outcomes.

Abstract

Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) is effective to treat right ventricle outflow (RVOT) dysfunction. Long term results and risk factors of valve dysfunction remain little known. We studied long term results of PPVI. All consecutive patients who had successful PPVI between January 2008 and January 2020 in one tertiary center were prospectively included. Follow-up was updated in 2020. 212 patients were included (Melody Valve, n = 32 (15.1%); Sapien XT Valve, n = 47 (22.2%); Sapien 3 valve, n = 133 (62.7%). Median age was 28 years (range 10-81). Patched native pulmonary artery was the most frequent RVOT type (44.4%). Mean follow-up was 2.8 years (range 3 months to 11.4 years). Pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) was performed in 23 cases (10.8%), related to stenotic degeneration (n = 22 cases, 95%) and severe regurgitation (n = 1, 4.3%). PVR was performed in 17 Melody valves (53.1%) and 6 Sapien valves (3.3%), with an incidence of 7.6% per patient-year and 1.3% per patient-year respectively (P = 0.05). Mean interval between PPVI and PVR was 4.7 years (range 1.1-10.1 year). Infective endocarditis (IE) was reported in 13 patients (Melody valve, n = 12, 37.5%; Sapien valve, n = 1, 0.5%) with an incidence of 5.5% per patient-year and 0.2% per patient-year respectively (P < 0.0001). In an univariate Cox regression analysis, risk factors of PVR were RV obstruction before PPVI (P = 0.04), transpulmonary maximal velocity > 2.7 m/s after PPVI (P = 0.05), tricuspid regurgitation doppler maximal gradient >50 mmHg after PPVI (P < 0.001), valve diameter < 22 mm (P < 0.003), IE (P < 0.0001) and age < 25 (P = 0.04). Risk factors of IE were Melody valve (P < 0.0001), RV obstruction before (P = 0.03) or after PPVI (P = 0.05), valve diameter < 22 mm (P < 0.03), and younger age (P = 0.02). 21. Brain glycogen metabolism: A possible link between sleep disturbances, headache and depression.

Abstract

The functions of sleep and its links with neuropsychiatric diseases have long been questioned. Among the numerous hypotheses on sleep function, early studies proposed that sleep helps to replenish glycogen stores consumed during waking. Later studies found increased brain glycogen after sleep deprivation, leading to "glycogenetic" hypothesis, which states that there is a parallel increase in synthesis and utilization of glycogen during wakefulness, whereas decrease in the excitatory transmission creates an imbalance causing accumulation of glycogen during sleep. Glycogen is a vital energy reservoir to match the synaptic demand particularly for re-uptake of potassium and glutamate during intense glutamatergic transmission. Therefore, sleep deprivation-induced transcriptional changes may trigger migraine by reducing glycogen availability, which slows clearance of extracellular potassium and glutamate, hence, creates susceptibility to cortical spreading depolarization, the electrophysiological correlate of migraine aura. Interestingly, chronic stress accompanied by increased glucocorticoid levels and locus coeruleus activity and leading to mood disorders in which sleep disturbances are prevalent, also affects brain glycogen turnover via glucocorticoids, noradrenaline, serotonin and adenosine. These observations altogether suggest that inadequate astrocytic glycogen turnover may be one of the mechanisms linking migraine, mood disorders and sleep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nous proposons que la NGI pourrait améliorer le bilan énergétique en modulant la thermogenèse du tissu adipeux brun (TAB), en impliquant son principal régulateur: le système nerveux sympathique (SNS).
