This study evaluates the impact of news factors in press releases sent from scientific organizations on the representation of ocean plastic research in newspapers. We tracked 84 press releases discussing peer-reviewed ocean plastic studies, published between 2017 and 2021 on EurekAlert! and identified their presence in 495 English-language newspapers worldwide. Text comparison showed that press releases contribute highly to the construction of newspaper articles, with copied text segments in over half of the articles. News factors highlighting the prestige of the scientific study, like research published in high-impact journals or conducted by elite researchers were indicators of high newspaper coverage, as were the news factors bad news, magnitude, and social/economic relevance. Scientific press releases usually provide essential details about research, such as sample characteristics, research sites, and methods. However, funding information and research limitations were only marginally present. This study showed that providing research details does not reduce newsworthiness, instead sometimes even increasing it. Providing research details in press releases can influence journalists' understanding and evaluation of the scientific study and thereby their decision to report. Pandemi COVID-19 telah melahirkan berbagai inisiatif masyarakat dalam rangka meringankan beban satu sama lain. Salah satunya adalah LaporCovid-19, sebuah inisiasi yang melakukan diseminasi pesan-pesan advokasi berbasis sains terkait situasi pandemi COVID-19 di Indonesia melalui siaran pers. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis alasan, cara pengembangan, serta aspek pendukung dan penghambat penggunaan daya tarik pesan dari siaran pers LaporCovid-19. Penelitian menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara dengan tiga orang dari pihak internal LaporCovid-19 serta seorang triangulator ahli, dan studi pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siaran pers LaporCovid-19 menggunakan tiga jenis daya tarik pesan, yaitu rasional, emosi negatif, dan emosi positif, untuk mengomunikasikan pentingnya penanganan pandemi berdasarkan hak atas kesehatan secara ilmiah. Daya tarik rasional yang berupa pemaparan fakta dan data primer berdasarkan hasil laporan warga menjadi kelebihan karena dapat meningkatkan pemahaman dan penerimaan audiens. Sementara itu, daya tarik emosi negatif berupa penggambaran dampak buruk pandemi justru menjadi tantangan karena memperoleh respons berupa sikap defensif pemerintah serta kejenuhan masyarakat sipil. The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked various community initiatives aimed at alleviating each other's burdens. One such initiative is LaporCovid-19, which disseminates science-based advocacy messages regarding the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Indonesia through press releases. This research aims to analyze the reasons, development process, as well as the supporting and inhibiting aspects regarding the use of message appeals in LaporCovid-19's press releases. Employing data collection techniques such as interviews with three LaporCovid-19 members and an expert triangulator, as well as literature review. The research findings revealed that LaporCovid-19's press releases employed three types of message appeals: rational, negative emotion, and positive emotion. These appeals were used to emphasize the importance of addressing the pandemic from a scientific viewpoint, rooted in the public right to health. Furthermore, the use of rational appeal, using factual citizen-based data, boosts understanding and acceptance. Meanwhile, the negative emotional appeal depicting pandemic impacts often prompts defensive government reactions and societal fatigue.

Background: The Public Relations of the Makassar City Government not only conveys positive information about the programs and policies of the Makassar City Government, but also monitors and reports on Danny Pomanto's personal activities related to his candidacy for Governor of South Sulawesi in 2024. Purpose: This research aims to analyse the tendency of Makassar City Public Relations Press Release Content in reporting Danny Pomanto's activities outside his position as Mayor of Makassar. Method: The approach used is descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis method. The unit of analysis used in this research is the press release of the Public Relations (City Government) of Makassar City Government starting from the period February 2023 to September 2023. Data analysis uses the Krippendorff method with steps of unititisation, sampling, recording, analysis, inference and data reduction Results: The results showed that the content of press releases made by the Public Relations of Makassar City Government is not only conveying positive information about the programmes and policies of Makassar City Government to the public, but the PR also oversees and reports on Danny Pomanto's activities outside of his position as mayor, including releasing his personal activities as Chair of the Hasanuddin University Alumni Association (IKA) South Sulawesi when visiting several regions in South Sulawesi which have something to do with running as a candidate for Governor of South Sulawesi 2024. Conclusion: The implication of the findings of this research that needs to be underlined is that the public relations of Makassar City Government as a representative of government institutions / agencies should only report on the activities of institutions or leaders of institutions, not to become campaigners for individual leaders of institutions for political purposes. This paper presents evidence that higher stock liquidity makes firms increase tone of press releases. I find that firms with higher stock liquidity have higher tone in press releases, relative to the tone of news initiated by media, than firms with lower stock liquidity. This relation is stronger for firms with greater short‐term pressure, that is, with greater transient institutional ownership, greater sensitivity of manager's wealth to stock price, and more analyst coverage. This finding suggests that stock liquidity, by producing short‐term pressure on firms, leads firms to boost press release tone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT – This research analyzes the subsidy information during the covid-19 pandemic from the Indonesian Government’s press release to mass media news. Information subsidies are a compelling practice to study since they describe how information flows in society. This practice becomes unavoidable, especially during the pandemic, which implies restrictions on activities and social distancing. This research used framing analysis and quantitative methods. The results indicated practices of information subsidies with a total of 95.65% from the Indonesian government press release samples published by mass media in the form of news in the same period. The analysis showed no significant difference between information from government press releases and news on detik.com through analysis of dominant frame, episodic and thematic framing, emotional appeal, gain-loss framing, sourcing news, and news tone. It is feared that the practice of information subsidies will lead to the degeneration of social responsibility from the mass media and eliminate the data verification process in journalism. RESUMO – Esta pesquisa analisa as informações sobre subsídios durante a pandemia da covid-19, desde o comunicado de imprensa do governo indonésio até as notícias da mídia de massa. Os subsídios de informações são uma prática interessante a ser estudada, pois descrevem como as informações fluem na sociedade. Essa prática se torna inevitável, especialmente durante a pandemia, o que implica restrições às atividades e distanciamento social. Esta pesquisa utilizou análise de enquadramento e métodos quantitativos. Os resultados indicaram práticas de subsídios de informação com um total de 95.65% das amostras de comunicados de imprensa do governo indonésio publicados pela mídia de massa na forma de notícias no mesmo período. A análise não mostrou diferença significativa entre as informações dos comunicados de imprensa do governo e as notícias no site detik.com por meio da análise do enquadramento dominante, enquadramento episódico e temático, apelo emocional, enquadramento de ganho-perda, notícias de origem e tom das notícias. Teme-se que a prática de subsídios de informação leve à degeneração da responsabilidade social da mídia de massa e elimine o processo de verificação de dados no jornalismo. RESUMEN – Esta investigación analiza la información subvencionada durante la pandemia de covid-19, desde el comunicado de prensa del Gobierno indonesio hasta las noticias de los medios de comunicación. Las subvenciones a la información son una práctica interesante de estudiar, ya que describen cómo fluye la información en la sociedad. Esta práctica se hace inevitable, especialmente durante la pandemia, lo que implica restricciones en las actividades y distanciamiento social. Esta investigación utilizó análisis de encuadre y métodos cuantitativos. Los resultados indicaron prácticas de subvención de la información con un total del 95.65% de las muestras de comunicados de prensa del gobierno indonesio publicados por los medios de comunicación en forma de noticias en el mismo periodo. El análisis no mostró diferencias significativas entre la información de los comunicados de prensa del gobierno y las noticias de detik.com mediante el análisis del encuadre dominante, el encuadre episódico y temático, el atractivo emocional, el encuadre de ganancia-pérdida, las noticias de origen y el tono de las noticias. Se teme que la práctica de las subvenciones a la información provoque la degeneración de la responsabilidad social de los medios de comunicación y elimine el proceso de verificación de datos en el periodismo.

One reason many nations have centralized policing functions is to manage knowledge that can take on and solve the most complex criminal investigations and prosecutions in the country. Somewhat similar to the Serious Fraud Office in the United Kingdom and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States, the National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Økorim) is Norway’s central unit for fighting economic and environmental crime. After a scandal hit this national authority, the current research asks to what extent Økokrim is still a serious economic crime office. An empirical study of press releases from the national authority over a one year period, from June 2022 to June 2023, suggests that Økokrim has taken on less serious economic crime cases to close the competence gap between the requirements of new criminal cases and the qualifications among Økokrim employees and leaders. The consequence seems to be that from an estimated conviction rate of 1 out of 11 white-collar offenders in Norway in the past, less than 9 % are now brought to justice. This article contributes to the current state of knowledge regarding offender convenience depending on operations and policy choices of centralized crime agencies.

Background: Nutrition is an area of apparent disagreement among the public and experts. It is also an area which has seen a rapid increase in the number of publications in the past 40 years. With the advent of online media and social media platforms, the volume of news has also increased. This review considered five types of nutrition research and how press releases linked to publications might be reported by the media. Methods: Examples were taken from nutrition‐related articles published in the areas of in vitro work, animal data, epidemiology, clinical trials and data modelling publications which had press releases deposited in online repositories (EurekAlert! and AlphaGalileo). A critical narrative of the source of the media message, estimates of its reach and any potential exaggeration or source of confusion were identified. Results: It was clear that research has been reported by funders, journals and researchers' institutions in ways that claim extended findings of the data beyond that reported in the manuscript. This included inferences of health benefits in humans from laboratory studies, splitting outcome data for the same exposure in epidemiological studies based on perceived public interest, using clinical trials to make media claims that would not be permitted in advertisements and claiming modelled data for cases were actual changes in numbers of cases. Conclusions: It is essential that funding bodies and institutions along with academic journals apply pressure to discourage exaggeration of research. This is necessary to maintain public trust in science and ultimately improve public health. Recommendations: Develop advice on how language linked to causality and certainty is used building on the initial steps made by the Academies of Medical Sciences to assess both press releases and subsequent reporting.Encourage journals to release press releases to external bodies such as the Science Media Centre to seek external comment. This perhaps is preferable to commentary in accompanying journal editorial as this could risk bias, as it is also likely to support journal readership.Consider how results could be extended, and avoid institutional press releases which contain health claims and look to make a health claim.Editors and reviewers should look to moderate how claims can potentially grow through types of research without the evidence being in place, including careful reporting of the nature of the methodologies and models used.Journals should seek to publish more complete data sets rather than apparently splitting outcomes for the same exposure or intervention.Encourage the development of 'lab‐to‐person' research and reviews to develop theories and evidence from mechanism to intervention data. This perhaps would result in fewer publications, but they are likely to provide a more complete view of the evidence.Professional, regulator and statutory bodies, including the Association for Nutrition register (United Kingdom Voluntary Register of Nutritionists) and Health & Care Professions Council (Registered Dietitians), along with learned bodies such as the Nutrition Society should adopt requirements for their members and journals to report only their work in a responsible manner (perhaps aligned to these recommendations). Tone sets the readers' mood in which the writers confide their writing styles which can convey much of the cultural background of the community to where they belong. In the world's preceding advancement, the tone in a text has limited literature in the field. This motivated the researcher to look at the press release as it is the new face of public relations. The nature of the study is on Intercultural rhetoric (IR)/Contrastive Rhetoric (CR), the study of written discourse between and among individuals with different cultural backgrounds. The study used quantitative and qualitative approaches as they complement the richness of the study. The gathered press release headlines of UNICEF written by authors from varied discourse communities, namely the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States of America, had gone through content analysis and discovered the ingenuity and inspiration in their word selection in writing headlines. The headlines from the Philippines are analyzed for having a committed tone and logical and analytical attitude. Interestingly, press releases from Thailand have a committed tone as well. On the other hand, press releases from the USA have a neutral tone.

Guided text generation is one of the key issues when it comes to creating human-like artificial intelligence writing machines. Humans can use their writing skills depending on the topic of the text and the pieces of information they want to include. The context and style also play an important role in mediating the engagement level of the press release. However, current research does focus on conditional text continuation rather than a specific writing task. To address this problem, we propose DeepPress, a topic-aware approach that generates effective press release content when the keywords are situated in the context. We used a variety of public press datasets on specific topics to build and test our models. We show the proposed deep model achieves fine-grained control of attributes such as topics and sentiment while retaining fluency for the generated press release articles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how CEO overconfidence affects the tone of press releases. Using option‐based proxies for CEO overconfidence, I find that over the 2000–2018 period, the press releases issued by firms with overconfident CEOs have more positive tone and receive more positive market reactions. The relation between CEO overconfidence and the tone of press releases is stronger among firms with good operating performance and concentrated in investment‐related news but is insignificant for earnings news. Proceeding from the importance of studying the contemporary Arabic language at its various levels and forms, and as a continuation of a previous research effort that dealt with the patterns of the nominal sentence in models from a Qatari newspaper, this research comes to present a statistical grammatical study of the patterns of verbal structures in the Qatari newspaper Al-Raya, as an example of the language of contemporary journalism, through a research sample that includes twenty-four issues dating back to 2017, which is divided into three types of journalistic writing: the article (133 articles), the report (226 reports) and the news (650 press releases). The aim behind this study is clarifying the patterns of verbal contemporary structures in the selected sample, and to determine the extent of their variation according to the different written genres, as well as to identify some phenomena of the verbal sentence structures and their characteristics in this model, in terms of their linguistic modernity or change and distance from the norm. This will make us look at some structures in their general frameworks, whether they are related to the verbal or nominal sentence. For this reason, in the title, we coupled the term “its patterns” to “their general components.” This can be achieved through two main topics: the first deals with counting the patterns of verbal structures distributed over the elements of the verbal sentence and its grammatical types with examples, and the second topic is an analytical reading to find out the extent of the distribution of patterns of structures on the specific journalistic writing genres, in addition to addressing the characteristics of some structures and grammatical phenomena related to the verbal sentence –or other- In the language of the examined press sample. This article discusses the role of TV documentaries in disseminating osteoarchaeology to a wider audience. The author emphasizes the importance of sharing scientific research with the general public, who ultimately fund universities through taxes and fees. The article suggests that press releases and TV documentaries can be effective ways to reach a broader audience. However, it also acknowledges that not all documentaries are of high quality and highlights the need for researchers to carefully choose which projects to be involved in to maintain academic integrity. It resulted from Russia‘s launch of the “special military operation” against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, in response to the alleged genocide of Donbass communities by the Kyiv regime. The Courted delivered its Order on 16 Marco 2022 and indicated provisional measures. Unfortunately, the Polish media coverage distorted the content of the Order. This article aims to present how the Order was covered and to demystify its content.

The capital market, as a place of accumulation of micro funds, faces anomalies such as Infractions and offenses, and this has led officials to look for solutions. One of the ways to prevent and counteract these anomalies is to publicly disclose the offenders' name which has taken into consideration in recent years This two-pronged approach, on the one hand, by introducing offenders , can lead to the prevention of infractions and offenses, and on the other hand, after the occurrence of these anomalies, by defaming the offender, be a decisive and deterrent response to them. The solution, of course, is not without criticism; For example, critics find the public disclosure of offenders and criminals in conflict with the need for respect for human dignity (Proportionality of punishments). In short, it can be said that this objection cannot persuade officials to ignore the potentials and benefits of public disclosure of offenders. In addition, it can be neglected to apply the punishment in respect of minor offenses so as to ensures proportionality of punishments. In this study, using a descriptive-analytical method and using library resources, public disclosure of criminals and offenders has been studied analytically and comparatively.

In this work, we explored an upstream approach to improving news coverage of crashes: improving the press releases written by police. We developed a training program to share best practices and piloted it with 45 officers in New Jersey. We employed an exploratory mixed-methods approach, including a post-training questionnaire and extensive discussions with police officers, journalists, and legal scholars, to understand officers’ likelihood to implement our advice and the barriers they anticipated in doing so. Officers raised concerns about the difficulty of implementing some of the suggestions (e.g., report crash statistics or describe safe systems), pointing to time constraints for the relevant staff. Others disagreed with some of the guidance, principally because they wanted to stick to “just the facts” and avoid legal trouble. Based on this rich data, we carefully refined our guidance in the form of a two-page handout and press release template.

In a world in which major technological advances have considerably boosted the use of the web as a communication tool, the analysis of digital press releases to disseminate information on the case-related activity of judicial courts and project their social and institutional identity far and wide is useful to understand an evolving continuum of professional discursive practices (re-)shaped within institutional and media (public relations) communication strategies. Drawing from the criteria of genre categorizations (Swales, 2004; Bhatia, 2004; Askehave & Swales, 2001) along with computer-mediated analysis of texts (Yates & Orlikowski, 1992; Askehave & Nielsen, 2005; Caballero, 2008; Villanueva et al., 2008; Garzone, 2012) and metapragmatic strategies of press releases (Jacobs, 1999) in a randomised corpus of web-based European Court of Justice institutional press releases, I first place the sampled texts into their context of use, and then look at the generic structure used to realise the moves with communicative purposes, in both qualitative and quantitative analyses of data. Context and structure underlying the communicative genre are then mapped onto the role and function of intertextuality and interdiscursivity (Fairclough, 1992, 2003; Bhatia 2004, 2017) alongside recontextualization (Linell, 1998; Sarangi & Brookers-Howell, 2006). The findings show that the genre typifies the rhetorical activities and purposes of release writers as they come across to the media and the wider audiences in the ongoing context of institutionalised communication, and the ways the genre effectively replicates other forms of discourses and genres at different levels of organisational structure.
