1. Effects of Ca2+ ions on the horseshoe crab coagulation cascade triggered by lipopolysaccharide.

Abstract

The lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-triggered horseshoe crab coagulation cascade is composed of three protease zymogens, prochelicerase C (proC), prochelicerase B (proB) and the proclotting enzyme (proCE). In this study, we found that Ca 2+ ions increase the production of the clotting enzyme as a result of a cascade reaction reconstituted by recombinant proteins of wild-type (WT) proC, WT proB and WT proCE. We divided the cascade into three stages: autocatalytic activation of WT proC on the surface of LPS into WT α-chelicerase C (Stage 1); activation of WT proB on the surface of LPS into WT chelicerase B by WT α-chelicerase C (Stage 2) and activation of WT pro ce into WT CE by chelicerase B (Stage 3). Ca2+ ions enhanced the proteolytic activation in Stage 2, but not those in Stages 1 and 3. Moreover, we performed isothermal titration calorimetry to clarify the interaction of LPS or the recombinant zymogens with Ca2+ ions. LPS interacted with Ca2+ ions at an association constant of K a = 4.7 × 104 M−1, but not with any of the recombinant zymogens. We concluded that LPS bound with Ca2+ ions facilitates the chain reaction of the cascade as a more efficient scaffold than LPS itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2. Choreographies of Care: A Dance of Human and Material Agency in Rehabilitation Work with Robots

Abstract

This article seeks to advance the understanding of how human and material agency enmesh in human-robotic workplaces. By means of a qualitative study, the practical use of robots is investigated within two organisations for medical rehabilitation. The theoretical framework combines Andrew Pickering’s ‘dance of agency’ with a process-oriented view of technology as technical rationality. It shows how resistances and accommodations are enacted by both humans and nonhumans as analytical loci of the dance of agency, and it explains how the experimental activities that are concerned with technology adoption and use are emergently fixed in formal or informal rules of coordination of action – the ‘choreographies of care’. By extending the processual orientation of Pickering’s ‘dance of agency’, and by further elaborating on the organisational implications of technological change within it, the article increases understanding of how the transformation of material agency may enact processes of change in the organisational culture.

3. Efecto del marketing relacional y redes sociales en la satisfacción de universitarios

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the effects of relational marketing and social networks on the satisfaction of university students. The research focuses on two academic activities: administrative procedures and academic communication. A theoretical model based on Relational Marketing was designed, and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) was applied to evaluate the reliability and validity of the constructs, as well as to test the relationships of the structural model. An exploratory factorial analysis was carried out using the PLS-SEM method, which measured the model's capacity through the coefficient of determination R2, an appropriate approach for research in management sciences. The study was conducted with a sample of 708 students. The results allow for the acceptance of the proposed hypotheses, indicating that there is a positive relationship between the relationship attributes based on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube) and communication with students. It is accepted that the more relationship attributes universities use, the better the academic procedures will be on social networks, and finally, it is determined that there is greater satisfaction and student relationship when academic procedures are carried out through social networks.

5. Built Heritage Repurposing and Communities Engagement: Symbiosis, Enabling Processes, Key Challenges

Abstract

The paper debates the results achieved in the Sanità district of Naples within the funded research project Play_ACT by the Department of Architecture, University of Naples Federico II. The research investigates community engagement processes in built heritage design for repurposing. Based on a mixed deductive and inductive approach, this paper frames the built heritage in the following ways: (a) a record of historical development and way of life, a linking capital between community and context; (b) the enabler of community engagement, representative of creative skills and work of humankind; and (c) a driving force for growth. The paper analyses several community-driven repurposing practices experienced within European programs. Supported by the ISO 37104: 2019 and UNI 11151-1: 2005 standards, the paper focuses on the replicability of community engagement in built heritage repurposing processes, outlining the commonalities in terms of strategies, actions, and actors involved in: (1) discovery; (2) negotiation; and (3) sharing. Focusing on the Sanità district of Naples, the research experiences the sustainability of community-led repurposing, observing long-lasting spillover effects on the physical, economic, cultural, and social subsystems. Finally, with the support of a heritage case study, Cristallini 73, future key challenges for a durable and inclusive community engagement are outlined: A activation of collaborative networks; B promotion of inclusive dynamics of long-life learning; and C creation of cultural and creative industries.
