Background:  In South Africa, various treatment modalities from abroad have been implemented to treat patients with mood disorders. This article is based on a South African model that has been developed, implemented and evaluated for psychiatric nurses to use in facilitating constructive group therapy for patients with mood disorders., Objectives:  This study aimed to describe psychiatric nurses' experiences in implementation of a model to facilitate constructive group therapy for patients with mood disorders., Method:  A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design was used for this study. Participants were psychiatric nurses working in an inpatient unit for patients with mood disorders in a public psychiatric hospital., Results:  The study revealed that psychiatric nurses experienced the model as a supportive tool to facilitate constructive interaction among patients with mood disorders. The model was beneficial in creating a safe space for patients to share and deal with their challenges, promoting optimal functioning outside the hospital setting. The model's implementation also fostered improvement in psychiatric nurses' personal and professional skills., Conclusion:  The model emphasised psychiatric nurses' importance in treating patients with mood disorders and ensuring positive patient experiences and outcomes.Contribution: This study contributes to the theory of clinical psychiatric nursing practice and the empowerment of psychiatric nurses, creating self-awareness related to working with patients with mood disorders.

Introduction: A substantial number of trauma-exposed veterans seen in primary care report significant symptoms of PTSD and depression. While primary care mental health integration (PCMHI) providers have been successful in delivering brief mental health treatments in primary care, few studies have evaluated interventions that combine mobile health resources with PCMHI groups. This pilot study assessed the potential benefits of webSTAIR, a 10-module transdiagnostic treatment for trauma-exposed individuals, supported by 5 biweekly group sessions delivered via telehealth. The transdiagnostic and mobile health nature of the treatment, as well as the therapist and peer support provided through group sessions, may offer an innovative approach to increasing access to patient-centered and trauma-informed treatment in primary care settings., Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine male and female veterans with trauma-related symptoms (i.e., PTSD and/or depression) participated in group webSTAIR. Mixed effects analyses were conducted to assess changes in PTSD and depression at pre-, mid-, and post-treatment. Baseline symptom severity was assessed as a predictor of module completion and group attendance. The project was part of a VHA quality improvement project, and IRB approval was waived by the affiliated university., Results: Analyses revealed significant pre-to-post improvement in both PTSD and depression outcomes with a large effect size for PTSD (Hedges' gav = 0.88) and medium to large for depression (Hedges' gav = 0.73). Of participants who completed the baseline assessment, 90% began webSTAIR; of those, 71% completed the program. Baseline symptoms of PTSD and depression did not predict group attendance or module completion., Conclusions: Good outcomes and a satisfactory retention rate suggest that group webSTAIR may provide easily accessible, high-quality, and effective treatment for patients presenting with trauma-related problems without increasing therapist or system burdens. The results suggest the value of conducting a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of group webSTAIR relative to PCMHI usual care or other evidence-based, disorder-specific (e.g., PTSD) treatments for trauma-exposed individuals in PCMHI., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States 2024. Group supervision is an extensively used format across many training agencies, yet it has been largely disregarded in theory and research within the supervision literature. In fact, the Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology (American Psychological Association, 2015a) mentions group supervision only one time, despite the fact that supervision within a group context includes competencies and considerations that are both unique and essential to the effective and ethical practice of group supervision. Because supervision conducted with multiple supervisees is multilayered and-as a result-more complex, group supervisors need to develop special skills that go beyond the supervision dyad. This article looks to the literature on supervision-both individual and group modalities-and on group psychotherapy to highlight the practices and processes that set group supervision apart. Building upon the seven supervision competencies outlined by the American Psychological Association (Supervisor Competence; Diversity; Supervisory Relationship; Professionalism; Assessment/Evaluation/Feedback; Professional Competence Problems; and Ethical, Legal and Regulatory Considerations), which currently concentrate exclusively on individual supervision, we extend each area to include distinct features of group supervision. We include recommendations for supervisor training and for the application of effective group supervision practices, as well as ideas on how best to approach the formal adoption of group supervision guidelines for psychotherapists. Our hope is that, either in a revision of the Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology or in a freestanding supplement to the Guidelines, guidance for group supervision will be more explicitly included.
