1. Optimal Sizing of On-site Renewable Resources for Offshore Microgrids

Abstract

The offshore oil and natural gas platforms, mostly powered by diesel or gas generators, consume approximately 16TWh of electricity worldwide per year, which emits large amount of CO2. To limit their contribution to climate change, a proposed solution is to replace the traditional fossil fuel based energy resources with offshore clean energy. One of the main challenges in designing such a system is to ensure that energy demand is met while minimizing cost and reducing environmental impact. To address this challenge, several strategies including microgrid systems consisting of offshore wind turbines, wave energy converters, tidal energy converters, floating photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage systems are being proposed. In this paper, cost optimization for sizing these renewable energy sources is investigated. A cost optimization renewable sizing (CORS) model is proposed to optimize the sizes of the generation and storage resources. The proposed CORS model considers the variability of the power outputs of various renewable energy sources and load, as well as the cost of different generation technologies and the energy storage system. Simulations conducted on three test systems show the proposed resource sizing method significantly reduces the total lifetime cost of energy while maintaining a high level of reliability and sustainability.

Abstract

The deployment of intelligent transportation is still in its early stages and there are many challenges that need to be addressed before it can be widely adopted. Autonomous vehicles are a class of intelligent transportation that is rapidly developing, and they are being deployed in selected cities. A combination of advanced sensors, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence are being used in these vehicles to perceive their environment, navigate, and make the right decisions. These vehicles leverage extensive data sourced from various sensors and computers integrated into the vehicle. Hence, massive computational power is required to process the information from various built-in sensors in milliseconds to make the right decision. The power required by the sensors and the use of additional computational power increases the energy consumption, and, hence, could reduce the range of the autonomous electric vehicle relative to a standard electric car and lead to additional emissions. A number of review papers have highlighted the environmental benefits of autonomous vehicles, focusing on aspects like optimized driving, improved route selection, fewer stops, and platooning. However, these reviews often overlook the significant energy demands of the hardware systems—such as sensors, computers, and cameras—necessary for full autonomy, which can decrease the driving range of electric autonomous vehicles. Additionally, previous studies have not thoroughly examined the data processing requirements in these vehicles. This paper provides a more detailed review of the volume of data and energy usage by various sensors and computers integral to autonomous features in electric vehicles. It also discusses the effects of these factors on vehicle range and emissions. Furthermore, the paper explores advanced technologies currently being developed by various industries to enhance processing speeds and reduce energy consumption in autonomous vehicles. 20. Decentralized Control for a Multiactive Bridge Converter

Abstract

Multiactive bridge (MAB) converter has played an important role in the power conversion of renewable-based smart grids, electrical vehicles, and more/all electrical aircraft. However, the increase in MAB submodules greatly complicates the control architecture. In this regard, the conventional centralized control strategies, which highly rely on the central controller, are limited by the computation burden and flexibility. To overcome this problem, this article proposes a decentralized control for MAB converters. The MAB submodules switching frequencies are adaptively regulated based on local information. Through this effort, flexible electrical power routing can be realized without the need for communications. The proposed control strategy not only relieves the computation burden of MAB control system, but also improves its modularity, flexibility, and expandability. Finally, hardware experimental results of a typical MAB converter are presented for verification.

39. A Single DC-Link Multilevel 42-Sided Polygonal Voltage Space Vector Generation With Lower Order Harmonic Suppression Using Switched-Capacitor Filter.

Abstract

In this work, a multilevel 42-sided polygonal space vector structure for suppression of lower order harmonics for open-end induction motor (OEIM) drive applications is proposed. The proposed power circuit topology consists of two inverters feeding an OEIM from either side. The main inverter fed with a single dc-link providing active power for motoring operation is switched at low switching frequency. The secondary inverter fed with a capacitive supply is switched at high frequency to suppress lower order harmonics upto 39th order, up to the base speed of operation allowing maximum utilization of the dc-link. The advantages of lower order harmonic suppression in motor phase voltage, for polygonal space vector structures, are combined with multilevel inverter topology. This offers various advantages like multilevel operation with low inverter switching for the main power delivery inverter and harmonic suppression throughout the modulation range. The low switching frequency primary inverter generates harmonics of the order $6*k \pm 1$ , where $k = 1, 2, 3,{\ldots }$. The harmonics are suppressed by the capacitor-fed secondary inverter, which supplies only reactive power for suppression of lower order harmonics in motor phase voltage. Use of a single dc-link facilitates four-quadrant operation of the inverter. The proposed scheme is validated for steady-state and dynamic performance by experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
