In questo saggio Giovanni Ruocco riflette sulla categoria di “accettabilità” sociale, proposta recentemente da Jean-Pierre Cavaillé quale metodologia di studio dell’irreligione e dell’incredulità in età moderna, e, in tal senso, quale messa a punto della storiografia libertina degli ultimi anni. Se, da un lato, di questa proposta Ruocco condivide l’esigenza di riferire le idee sempre allo specifico contesto storico in cui esse sono state prodotte e acquisite come oggetto di confronto polemico tra gli attori, al fine di comprendere anche che cosa, in quel contesto, fosse possibile dire pubblicamente e cosa non; dall’altro, proprio ai fini di una conoscenza storica specifica e profonda, egli afferma la necessità metodologica di prolungare la ricerca al di là dei confini temporali dello specifico contesto storico-sociale, provando al tempo stesso a decifrare anche la pluralità delle intenzioni dei soggetti coinvolti. In tal senso, l’autore ritiene che all’interno di una stessa società, in un momento storico dato, coesistano una molteplicità di contesti umani definiti e circoscritti, più o meno strutturati e costanti nel tempo, all’interno di ciascuno dei quali ogni soggetto si comporta diversamente, interagendo con parole, orali o scritte, suoni, gesti, azioni fisiche, ecc., specifici e comuni. La riflessione sui contesti sociali in cui l’attore agisce deve essere inoltre integrata con quella sulle diverse sfere che attraversano la vita individuale-relazionale dei soggetti coinvolti, da quella interiore propria di ciascuno a quella privata familiare, da quelle amicali o associative fino alla sfera pubblica ufficiale, ciascuna caratterizzata da un suo livello di conoscenza e da una sua verità, ciascuna apparentemente separata dalle altre e protetta da un certo livello di segretezza. E se un attento approccio di ricerca deve indagare in modo specifico e confrontare tra loro i contenuti di conoscenza e di verità espressi all’interno di ognuna di queste sfere, esso non deve però considerarle realmente separate tra loro all’interno della società, ma deve attraversarne i confini, evidenziandone i livelli di intercomunicazione. Sotto questo profilo l’autore sottolinea l’utilità di recuperare l’approccio storiografico di una studiosa italiana del libertinismo, Anna Maria Battista, la quale, in alcuni saggi degli anni Sessanta-Ottanta del Novecento, leggeva nella dissociation libertine non solo la rinuncia della filosofia montaigniana ad occuparsi delle cose del mondo, ma anche la base di una potenziale riforma morale e politica, a partire dall’avvio di una profonda conoscenza del sé. In this contribution Giovanni Ruocco analyzes the idea of social “acceptability”, recently proposed by Jean-Pierre Cavaillé as a methodology of study of godlessness and incredulity during the modern age, and consequently as a clarification of the recent historiography on libertinism. If, on the one hand, Ruocco shares the requirement to always consider the ideas in the context in which they were produced, and seen by the actors as objects of polemical confrontation - also to better understand what in this context was possible to say publicly or not - on the other hand he asserts the methodological necessity, in historic research, to go beyond the temporal borders of a specific social context, by trying at the same time to analyze the plurality of intentions of the involved subjects. The author also believes in the coexistence, in a given political society, of a variety of defined human contexts, more or less structured and long-lasting, in whom every subject can act in a different way, by communicating with specific words, oral or written, as with sounds, gestures, physical actions, etc. This reflection on the social contexts must be joined with the attention to the various spheres crossing and shaping the individual-relational life of the subjects: the personal, internal sphere and that private of the family, the spheres of friendship or association until the public one; a specific level of knowledge, of truth and secret, seems to separate and protect every sphere of others. But if a correct approach of research should examine with attention and compare the knowledge and the truth expressed in every sphere, we cannot consider these ones as really and clearly separated in society: it is necessary to cross their borders, by emphasizing their interconnections. From this point of view, the author underlines the utility to recover the historiographical approach of an Italian scholar of French libertinism, Anna Maria Battista, who, between the ‘60s and ‘80s of the XXth century, judged the libertin dissociation not simply as the renunciation of Montaigne to take care of the world, but also as a potential basis for a moral and political reform of society, from the deep knowledge of the “me”. Giovanni Ruocco, dans cet essai, analyse la catégorie d’“acceptabilité” sociale, recemment proposée par Jean-Pierre Cavaillé en méthodologie d’étude de l’irréligion et de l’incrédulité à l’âge moderne et, donc, en mise au point de l’historiographie libertine des années dernières. Si, d’un côté, Ruocco partage de cette proposition l’exigence de reconduire toujours les idées au contexte dans lequel elles ont été produites et acquises comme objets de confrontation polémique par les acteurs, pour comprendre aussi ce que dans ce contexte il était possible de dire publiquement ou non ; de l’autre côté, il affirme de toute façon la nécessité méthodologique, dans la recherche historique, de regarder au-delà des frontières temporelles d’un contexte social spécifique, en essayant au même temps d’analyser la pluralité d’intentions des sujets impliqués. Et l’auteur croit que, dans une société, coexistent au même temps une multiplicité de contextes humaines définis, plus ou moins structurés et durables, où chaque sujet agit d’une manière différente, en interagissant par des mots, orals ou écrits, des sons, des gestes, des actions physiques, etc., spécifiques et communs. Cette réflexion sur les contextes sociaux doit être intégrée par l’attention aux différentes sphères qui traversent et composent la vie individuelle-relationnelle des sujets affectés : la sphère intérieure personnelle et celle privée familiale, les sphères d’amitié ou d’association jusqu’à celle publique officielle ; un niveau spécifique de connaissance, de vérité et de sécret semble séparer et proteger chaque sphère des autres. Et quoique une approche de recherche correcte devrait examiner avec attention et comparer la connaissance et la vérité exprimées dans chaque sphère, on ne peut pas considérer au même temps ces sphères sociales réellement et nettement séparées entr’eux : il faut en traverser leurs frontières, en en soulignant leurs connnections réciproques. Sous ce rapport, l’auteur souligne l’utilité de redécouvrer l’approche historiographique d’une chercheuse italienne du libertinisme française, qui, entre les années Soixante et Quatres-vingts du xxe siècle, jugeait la dissociation libertine pas simplement en renonciation à la Montaigne à s’occuper du monde, mais plutôt en base potentielle d’une reforme morale et politique de la société, à partir de la connaissance individuelle profonde du « moi ».
