Bottom trawling significantly impacts benthic communities, reducing habitat complexity and biodiversity. The distribution and abundance of key species in the northeastern Gulf of Cádiz, Spanish waters of Atlantic Ocean, such as soft-bottom octocorals and burrowing megafauna, were examined using video observations and Spatial Distribution Models developed with Random Forest. The study was conducted in the Site of Community Importance “Volcanes de fango del golfo de Cádiz" focusing on depths between 300 and 950 metres depth. The effects of environmental variables and bottom trawling on octocoral distribution and abundance were assessed, and management strategies for habitat protection were proposed. Bottom trawling was found to decrease habitat suitability for large octocoral species while the abundance of Norway lobster was positively correlated with certain values of bottom trawling effort. The study suggests that bottom trawling causes significant reduction in octocoral distributions, substrate homogenization, and habitat differentiation. A 200 km area is recommended for a specific bottom trawling regulation to protect soft-bottom octocorals and support the recovery of commercial burrowing megafauna.

There is a current interest in the study of the geochemical behavior of the rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic systems since their identification as potential microcontaminants in natural waters. In this context, here we report the concentrations and patterns of dissolved REE (dREE) in the waters of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC) and its major estuaries (Guadiana, Tinto-Odiel and Guadalquivir). Contamination in this area by metals has been extensively reported, linked to acid-mine inputs resulting from the mineralization of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, discharged mainly to the Tinto-Odiel river. However, the impact of these inputs on the concentrations and distribution of the dREE in the coastal waters of the GoC has not been addressed yet. Accordingly, elevated concentrations of dREE were obtained in the Tinto-Odiel estuary compared to the Guadiana and Guadalquivir, reflecting the impact of acid-mine drainage on this system. Only a significant fraction of anthropogenic gadolium (Gd) was observed in the Guadalquivir estuary, as a result of the input from major urban areas, where anthropogenic Gd fractions higher than 70% over the total dissolved pool were obtained for the freshwater end-member. Regarding the surface waters of the GoC, typical NE Atlantic distribution patterns of dREEs were obtained, but modified by two different end-members within this region. Accordingly, and despite the low water discharge of the Tinto-Odiel river, its elevated concentrations lead to an increase in the concentrations of dREEs in the nearshore waters of the GoC and producing a distinctive signature as observed for the MREE anomalies and HREE/LREE ratios. At the easternmost stations, close to the Strait of Gibraltar, these signals are also impacted by the inflow of Mediterranean waters and also by the discharge of the Guadalquivir river.

Contourite depositional systems (CDS) represent the sedimentary records of paleoceanographic circulation and paleoclimatic changes throughout the geological timescale. These records offer expanded but contingent information relative to their adjacent marine gateways, documenting changes in the intensity and the direction of modern-day and paleo-current pathways on multicentennial, millennial and million-year timescales. This study investigates the late Miocene to Quaternary CDSs from the Gulf of Cadiz towards the West Iberian margin after the exit of the past Betic and Rifian corridors and most recent Strait of Gibraltar, the key gateways for the Mediterranean – Atlantic exchange trough time. A summary of the key results is presented as a representative study case for decoding the long- and short-term behaviour of oceanographic processes related to gateways and their associated overflows.

The invasive seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae has recently arrived in Europe from the western Pacific. Its explosive spread on coastal areas of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC), Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea is spoiling native coastal ecosystems and inflicting heavy losses on ecosystem services. We discovered for the first time large amounts (up to 17 g m) of detached R. okamurae thalli on deep-sea bottoms of the GoC that are being dragged from the Strait of Gibraltar shores into the NE Atlantic by the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). Laboratory experiments revealed that collected unattached macroalgae from deep-sea locations were alive and healthy and maintained intact photosynthetic capacity after long dark periods, suggesting a tremendous resilience and invasive potential. Given the rapid transport of healthy thalli by the MOW and massive accumulation of them in the GoC basin, R. okamurae could represent a major threat to NE Atlantic ecosystems, affecting not only coastal but also deep-sea habitats.

Although the effects of tidal dynamics have been studied in shallow marine environments and morphologically restricted straits, the impact of these processes on deep-water marine environments remains to be studied in depth. This study highlights the influence of tides on the seafloor morphology of the eastern Gulf of Cádiz, near the exit of the Strait of Gibraltar. Two moorings, one with an Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ACDP) and another one with a thermistor chain, and local and regional profiles of salinity, temperature, and ADCP reveal the water mass distribution in the study area and associated oceanographic processes. The intermediate water masses flowing along the continental slope are the Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) and the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), bound by an interface located regionally at depths greater than 300 m, but identified locally at much shallower depths (up to 150 m) in the studied upper slope. The hydrodynamics of the area are governed by barotropic tidal currents, the MOW upper core, and the internal tides, which act at different time and spatial scales shaping the local terraced sea-floor morphology and determining the dominant sedimentary processes. The obtained results allow a better understanding of how secondary oceanographic processes are modulating the water mass circulation in this particular hot spot and their importance in explaining the formation and evolution of morphological depositional and erosional features.

[EN] Large anticyclonic eddies can detach from the Algerian Current, forming open-sea Algerian Eddies. These mesoscale structures have been intensively studied by means of sea surface temperature and altimetry data, and using numerical models. However, few studies describe an in situ sampling of their whole vertical structure. Furthermore, the area extending from Cape La Nao (western edge of the Balearic Channels) to the Almería-Orán Front has received very little attention, and it could be considered that there is a gap in our present oceanographic knowledge of this part of the western Mediterranean. An Algerian Eddy lasting for several months was detected in December 2021 to the south of Cape Palos. In order to analyse this eddy, an opportunity sampling was designed taking advantage of the periodic monitoring campaign RADMED 0222. This sampling revealed that the eddy had a baroclinic character, affecting the whole water column. These results suggest that this eddy was generated at the Algerian Current, finally affecting an area close to the eastern Spanish coast. The presence of these structures in this region of the western Mediterranean could alter the southward progression of the Northern Current and even the presence and structure of the Almería-Orán Front., [ES] Giros anticiclónicos de gran tamaño pueden desprenderse de la Corriente Argelina, llegando a formar giros en mar abierto. Estas estructuras de mesoescala han sido estudiadas intensamente mediante datos de temperatura superficial del mar, datos de altimetría, y modelos numéricos. Sin embargo, hay pocos trabajos que describan mediante medidas in situ la estructura vertical de estos giros. Al margen de esta circunstancia, la zona que se extiende desde el Cabo La Nao (en el extremo occidental de los Canales Baleares) hasta el Frente Almería-Orán, ha recibido poca atención, pudiéndose considerar que existe una laguna en nuestro conocimiento sobre la oceanografía de esta zona. Un giro anticiclónico fue detectado en diciembre de 2021 al sur de Cabo de Palos, pudiéndose observar durante varios meses. Para analizar este giro se diseñó un muestreo de oportunidad, aprovechando la campaña rutinaria RADMED0222. Este muestreo mostró la estructura baroclina del giro, la cual afectaba a toda su extensión vertical. Los resultados obtenidos también sugieren que el giro se formó en la Corriente Argelina, afectando finalmente a una zona próxima a la costa española. La presencia de este tipo de estructuras en esta región del Mediterráneo Occidental podría afectar a la progresión hacia el sur de la Corriente Septentrional, e incluso a la presencia y estructura del Frente Almería-Orán.

Small microplastics (SMPs) in the gulf of Cadiz was sampled at 5 m depth by pumping it through the ship's pipe system and filtered through a 45 mu m mesh size net. Our study reveals that higher densities have been found (130 mg.m(-3)) compared to other regions worldwide and these densities decreased from the coastline to the outer stations, showing a general coastal gradient influenced by estuarine outflows. SMPs with a size range between 45 and 193 mu m were predominant and most of them composed by polyethylene and polypropylene. The metals associated with the MPs were mainly Na (21.1%), K (11.3%), Fe (8.5%), Ca (2.1%), Cr (1.8%), Zr (13.3%) and Hf (0.7%). The warming of the surface ocean is expected to increase the stratification of the upper water column. This would decrease the efficiency of the wind-induced mixing, reducing the nutrient supply to the euphotic layer and the productivity of the oceans. Climatic projections show that the Mediterranean Sea will experience a strong warming and salting along the twenty first century. Nevertheless, very few works have found and quantified changes in the water column stratification of the Western Mediterranean. In this work, we obtain time series of Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) along the Spanish Mediterranean waters and the Gulf of Cádiz, using periodic CTD profiles collected under the umbrella of the Ocean Observing system of the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC). The length of the time series analyzed is variable, depending on the geographical area, but in some cases these time series extend from the beginning of the 1990s decade. Our results show that at present, no statistically significant changes can be detected. These results are confirmed by the analysis of MLD time series obtained from Argo profilers. Some of the meteorological factors that could affect the water column stratification (wind intensity and precipitation rates) did not experience significant changes for the 1990-2021 period, neither were observed long-term changes in the chlorophyll concentration. The hypothesis proposed to explain this lack of trends, is that the salinity increase of the surface waters has compensated for the warming, and consequently, the density of the upper layer of the Western Mediterranean (WMED) has remained constant. As the wind intensity has not experienced significant trends, the stratification of the Spanish Mediterranean waters and those of the Gulf of Cádiz would have not been affected. Nevertheless, we do not discard that our results are a consequence of the short length of the available time series and the large variance of the variables analyzed, evidencing the

Since 2004, high resolution profiles of the 3D velocity of the water column have been collected at the westernmost sill of the Strait of Gibraltar (Espartel Sill), with the aim of monitoring the Mediterranean water outflow and evaluating its short and long term variability. Initially equipped with a 75 kHz up-looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and a Conductivity/Salinity (CT) probe, the mooring line has been upgraded through years adding more, and more technologically advanced, instruments. In 2016, a 500 kHz ADCP was installed in down-looking mode, with the aim of covering the so far unsampled bottom layer, below the buoy deployed ∼20 m above the seafloor. Despite the implicit variability of such a long series, the averaged profile of the observed along-strait current systematically showed local minima ∼50 m above seafloor, which have been interpreted as the result of the interaction between diurnal and semidiurnal tidal currents (Sammartino et al., 2015). The prevailing semidiurnal tide drives periodic accelerations of the westward Mediterranean current flowing at the bottom, whereas diurnal constituents slow them down few meters above seafloor, giving rise to those local minima in amplitude. This mechanism is often related to severe drops in measurements accuracy. In 2019, the main ADCP was replaced by a 100 kHz model capable of collecting high resolution echograms of the water column with an additional vertical beam. This new information reveals the key role of scatterers concentration, which undergo diel vertical migrations, and affect the accuracy of current observations, which in turn rely on the amplitude of scattered echo recorded by the instruments. Actually, echo amplitude reaches average correlations of 0.7 with measurements uncertainty. In light of these new insights, accurate updates of the Mediterranean outflow calculations are performed (García-Lafuente et al., 2021) and new estimations of trend and long-term variability, are provided.

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) has been conducting a multidisciplinary study of the marine ecosystem in the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC; SW Iberian Peninsula) since 2009 within the frame of the program Time Series of Oceanographic data in the Gulf of Cadiz (STOCA, in Spanish). The program maintains repeated observations along five across-shelf transects: three times a year from 2009 to 2012 and quarterly on hereafter. In this paper we present the temporal evolution of the zooplankton community in the GoC. In particular, we focused on samples from three stations located off the Guadalquivir river mouth: GD1 (20 m depth), GD3 (80 m) and GD6 (450 m). Samples were taken with bongo-40 cm paired zooplankton nets (mesh size 200 mm). Double oblique hauls were conducted from top to bottom or to a maximum depth of 200 m) while the ship was steaming at 2.5 kn. A total of 43 samples per station were included in the analysis. Samples were imaged with ZooScan. Full images were processed with ZooProcess which generated set of associated features measured on each identified object (Gorsky et al, 2010). These objects were sorted following a common taxonomic guide using the web application EcoTaxa (http://ecotaxa.obs-vlfr.fr). As a sanity check, a variable number of aliquots were directly identified by light microscopy. These results permitted the description of the mean and variable components of the plankton community, their seasonal in the context of the thermohaline and transport variability in the 2010s.

The dense and deep water flow that leaves the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic flows through the upper and middle slope of the Gulf of Cádiz as a powerful bottom stream that model sand interacts with bathymetry. The detailed analysis of underwater images,obtained with a photogrammetric sled in the central area of the upper and middle slope of the Gulf of Cádiz, together with multibeam bathymetry and oceanographic and sediment types data, has allowed conducting a detailed study of the seafloor microtopography and the predominant oceanographic dynamics in the study area. Different fine-scale spatial bedforms were identified, such as ripples, dunes, burrows, mounds, obstacle marks, rock bottoms, and low-roughness bottoms using underwater images. Besides, a geostatistical study of the different video transects studied was carried out and allowed us to differentiate three types of bottoms depending on the processes that affect their microtopography.
