Objective: To describe systemic manifestations, the characteristics related to tooth eruption, and the occurrence of enamel defects in children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome (CZS). Material and Methods: Prospective case series based on nine children with confirmed CZS diagnosis assisted at a reference center in a municipality in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Through a structured interview directed to mothers, information related to prenatal, delivery, and postpartum periods was collected. Tooth eruption was monitored through clinical examinations for 36 months. The modified developmental defect of enamel index (DDE) was used to identify opacities and hypoplasia. Data were presented using descriptive statistics. Results: A high proportion (77.8%) had microcephaly, and 55.5% had low birth weight. Musculoskeletal disorders, swallowing difficulty, and self-injury practices were present in all children. Among the systemic findings, visual impairment (77.8%) and seizures (77.8%) were widely reported. Concerning disorders related to the stomatognathic system, bruxism (66.7%) and difficulty in sucking (33.3%) were present. For most children (77.8%), the deciduous right lower central incisor was the first tooth to erupt (minimum 8 months and maximum 17 months). Enamel defects were diagnosed in only two children (22.2%). Conclusion: A wide range of systemic manifestations was observed in children with CZS, including visual impairment and musculoskeletal disorders. Delayed eruption of the first deciduous tooth was also observed. Enamel defects were present in a small proportion of children.

Abstract: This study assessed the influence of sociodemographic conditions, oral hygiene habits, and the socio-psychological need for orthodontic treatment on the emotions of caregivers of children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study with families of individuals aged 6 to 14 years at a reference center for neurodevelopmental disorders and two dental school clinics in northeastern Brazil. Caregiver emotions were assessed using the ‘Parental Emotions’ domain of the Family Impact Scale (FIS). We analyzed sociodemographic variables, oral hygiene habits, and sociopsychological need for orthodontic treatment using the esthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). We used descriptive and hierarchical Poisson regression analyses with robust variance (α = 5%). The study included 144 families evenly distributed across the groups. The caregiver group with ASD demonstrated a higher total score for parental emotions (p < 0.001). Factors associated with this factor included caregiver responsible for brushing (PR = 1.34; 95%CI: 1.12–1.59), mandatory need for orthodontic treatment (PR = 1.25; 95%CI: 1.07–1.46), and caregivers’ education up to 8 years (PR = 1.45; 95%CI: 1.02–2.07). Caregivers with lower income showed a lower prevalence of parental emotions (PR = 0.57; 95%CI: 0.35–0.93). Caregivers of children with ASD exhibited a higher emotional burden. Factors associated with parental emotions included responsibility for tooth brushing attributed to caregivers, sociopsychological need for orthodontic treatment, and family income.

Introdução: O Previne Brasil reestruturou a forma de financiamento do Sistema Único de Saúde, estabelecendo metas e indicadores cujo objetivo é garantir a qualidade da assistência. Três destes novos indicadores dizem respeito ao pré-natal. Objetivo: Avaliar a qualidade das atividades de pré-natal prestadas às gestantes no município de Campina Grande (PB) entre os anos de 2018 e 2021, por meio dos indicadores do Previne Brasil, estabelecendo um comparativo entre os anos de pandemia de COVID-19 e relacionando os com a incidência de casos de sífilis congênita e em gestantes. Método: Trata-se de um estudo ecológico, observacional e descritivo realizado por meio da coleta de dados secundários do Sistema de Informação em Saúde para a Atenção Básica (2018–2021) de indicadores de desempenho do programa Previne Brasil para o pré-natal: proporção de gestantes com pelo menos seis consultas de pré-natal; proporção de gestantes com realização de exames para sífilis e HIV e a proporção de gestantes que passaram por atendimento odontológico. Acrescentou-se ainda uma busca de novos casos de sífilis congênita e em gestantes no TABNET - Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (Sinan) abrangendo os mesmos anos. Resultados: O indicador com piores resultados foi o de atendimento odontológico. Para os demais, embora haja entre um quadrimestre e outro, alguma variação de melhoria, os três indicadores avaliados apresentaram resultados muito aquém da meta de 60% estabelecida pelo Ministério da Saúde, o que pode ter influenciado no aumento considerável da incidência de sífilis no ano de 2021. Conclusões: É preciso que se estabeleça formas efetivas de melhoria da assistência que culminem em uma atenção integral à saúde da gestante que promovam desde o pré-natal a saúde do bebê. Para além disso, faz-se necessário o estudo das barreiras que separam a gestante do atendimento odontológico, desmistificando a relação que se estabelece entre a gestação e a atenção à saúde bucal.

Objective: To analyze the use of continued-use medications by Brazilian children with microcephaly caused by Congenital Zika Virus Infection. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 76 children of both genders. Information on age, use of continued-use medications, number and type of drugs used was collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Continued-use medications were used by 89.4% of the children, anticonvulsants / antiepileptics (88.1%), and those indicated for behavioral disorders (27.1%) were the most frequent. Sodium saccharin, sucrose, and sorbitol are the most common sugars in the composition of these drugs. Conclusion: The use of medicines is high, predominantly anticonvulsants and antiepileptics, which contain sugars in their composition. These drugs can lead to irreversible dental problems, such as tooth decay if proper oral hygiene is not present. Therefore, parents/guardians should be advised about adopting healthy oral hygiene habits after the administration of these drugs.
