Biochar amendment have been explored recently for improving hydro-mechanical properties of landfill cover system and enhancing the vegetation for the ecological restoration of post closure landfills. Existing studies have predominantly focused on the hydro-mechanical properties of biochar-amended rooted soils and yet few studies have comprehensively investigated their gas permeability functions in response to unsaturated conditions. The objective of this study is to experimentally and theoretically investigate the coupled effects of biochar and root intensity on CO2 gas permeability in unsaturated soil. Biochar-amended rooted soil was prepared by growing Chrysopogon zizanioides on granite residual soils with biochar at a mas ratio of 5 %. Gas permeability and unsaturated soil properties (i.e., suction and degree of saturation) were monitored simultaneously. Due to the presence of roots, the maximum gas permeability, hydraulic conductivity, and suction increased by 200 %, 600 %, and 50 %, respectively, compared with bare soil. This was attributed to preferential flow, micropore increasement and negative pressure induced by root growth. However, biochar addition decreased the maximum gas permeability and hydraulic conductivity by 21 % and 33 %, respectively. This was attributed to the pore filling function of biochar, increased capillarity due to intrapore of biochar, and presence of surface functional groups in biochar promoting CO2 adsorption. A newly developed model was proposed to predict gas permeability with respected to unsaturated soil properties. It was revealed that the gas permeability function of rooted soils showed a strong dependence on the measured root length density. This study highlights the significance of adopting biochar in mitigation of gas emissions in vegetated landfill cover system.

Critical soil suctions (threshold, tipping point, and permanent wilting) corresponding to initial drought response, near-death stage, and complete mortality, respectively; is essential for formulating irrigation schemes of vegetation grown in compacted soil under drought conditions. The effect of soil types on these critical soil suctions are unexplored and is crucial in understanding the soil-specific plant water functions. This study aims to establish the drought response of Axonopus compressus (grass), based on stomatal conductance (g s ) and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (CI) grown in different soil types. A. compressus were grown in six soil types (2 coarse-grained and 4 fine-grained soils) for 8 weeks, followed by continued drought condition. The g s and CI were monitored along with soil suction and moisture content. Both leaf and root growth were observed to be higher in coarse-grained soils than fine-grained soils, even though the water retention of the coarse-grained soils were comparatively less. Drought stress initiation in plants was captured by ψ threshold from the CI (especially in fine-grained soils) before the g s response. The three critical soil suctions estimated from the correlation between CI and ψ were found to be increasing with higher soil clay fraction. Corresponding plant available water contents (based on v/v volumetric water content) with each of three critical soil suctions were found to be dependent on the relative growth of canopy to root growth that occurred in different soil medias. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of observing affordance-driven action during motor imagery. Affordance-driven action refers to actions that are initiated based on the properties of objects and the possibilities they offer for interaction. Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) are two forms of motor simulation that can influence motor responses. We examined combined AO + MI, where participants simultaneously engaged in AO and MI. Two different kinds of combined AO + MI were employed. Participants imagined and observed the same affordance-driven action during congruent AO + MI, whereas in incongruent AO + MI, participants imagined the actual affordance-driven action while observing a distracting affordance involving the same object. EEG data were analyzed for the N2 component of event-related potential (ERP). Our study found that the N2 ERP became more negative during congruent AO + MI, indicating strong affordance-related activity. The maximum source current density (0.00611 μ A/mm 2 ) using Low-Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) was observed during congruent AO + MI in brain areas responsible for planning motoric actions. This is consistent with prefrontal cortex and premotor cortex activity for AO + MI reported in the literature. Arsenic contamination in groundwater poses a significant threat to human health, affecting millions worldwide. This study presents a novel approach for simultaneous remediation of both As(III) and As(V) by using iron-functionalized polythiophene (PTh@Fe) composites. The PTh@Fe composite was synthesized by a reduction process involving FeCl 2 /FeCl 3 byproducts of polymerization, resulting in a highly efficient adsorbent for both As(III) and As(V) species. The investigation systematically examined key parameters influencing arsenic removal, including adsorbent dosage, pH, initial arsenic concentration, and contact time. The composite exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities, with maximum removal percentages of 98.7% for As(III) and 98.8% for As(V) under the optimized conditions. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses suggested endothermic and spontaneous adsorption processes following a pseudo 2nd-order mechanism. Furthermore, the Langmuir isotherm model provided an excellent fit to the experimental data, with maximum adsorption capacities of 8.62 mg/g for As(V) and 7.57 mg/g for As(III). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the feasibility of arsenic adsorption onto iron species in various oxidation states, offering valuable theoretical insights into the process. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated good reusability over multiple adsorption-desorption cycles and tolerance to coexisting anions, highlighting its practical applicability for water purification. Fly ash consists of a considerable amount of hazardous elements with high mobility, posing substantial environmental risks during storage in surface impoundments and landfills. This hinders its efficient reuse in construction or material industries. To enhance the versatility of fly ash applications, a novel surface modification technique, termed SuMo, has been developed to create a hydrophobic polysulfide polymer coating on the surface of fly ash particles. The physicochemical properties of SuMo fly ash samples were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and leaching of hazardous elements was tested under practical environmental conditions (pH 4-12) based on the EPA's leaching environmental assessment framework (LEAF). The successful coating of polysulfide polymer on fly ash surface was verified through an increased percentage of C, S, and O in elemental mapping, coupled with the identification of S-O, CO, and C-H functional groups consistent with the chemical structure of polysulfide polymer. While the SuMo fly ash particles maintained their spherical shape, they exhibited increased surface roughness, robust hydrophobicity, and thermal stability up to 250 °C. Notably, owing to the coating's resilience against water leaching, the SuMo fly ash demonstrated a substantial reduction (up to 60-fold) in leachate concentrations of multiple concerning elements, including B, Be, Ba, Mn, Zn, As, Cr, Hg, etc., under various pH conditions compared to the uncoated fly ash. Furthermore, the polysulphide polymer coating effectively prevented Hg volatilization from fly ash below 163 °C. Introduction: Inflammation can be defined as a complex biological response that is produced by body tissues to harmful agents like pathogens, irritants, and damaged cells and thereby acts as a protective response incorporating immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators. Histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, leukotrienes (LTB4), prostaglandins (PGE2), prostacyclins, reactive oxygen species, proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-11, TNF- anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-4, IL-10, IL-11, IL-6 and IL-13, etc. all have different effects on both pro and anti-inflammatory mediators. Incorporation of combinatorial chemistry and computational studies have helped the researchers to design xanthones moieties with high selectivity that can serve as a lead compound and help develop potential compounds that can act as effective COX-2 inhibitors. The study aims to design and develop different series of substituted hydroxyxanthone derivatives with anti-inflammatory potential., Methods: The partially purified synthetic xanthone derivatives were orally administered to the carrageenan induced paw oedemic rat models at the dose of 100 mg/kg, and their effect in controlling the degree of inflammation was measured at the time interval of 30 min, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 hrs. respectively. Background: Information Education Communication (IEC) materials play a vital role in behavior change by raising awareness about health issues. In India, suicide is the leading cause of death in the age group of 15-39 years, exemplifying the pressing need for raising awareness about suicide prevention. This study aimed to develop a brochure on suicide prevention for young adults with the help of scientific methodology., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative research design was used in the study, and purposive sampling was used to collect the data. The study analyzed the awareness level and existing knowledge gap about suicide prevention among college students with the help of focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted independently among mental health experts, college teachers, and college students. Based on the findings from the FGDs, a comprehensive brochure was developed. The qualitative data collected by FGDs were analyzed using direct content analysis., Results: The findings of the FGDs helped identify the knowledge gaps with regard to young adult suicide prevention, and a brochure was prepared to address the same., Conclusion: The development of young adult suicide prevention IEC resources pertinent to Indian settings is crucial. Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic pathogen that primarily affects the lungs and frequently elicits an allergic immune response in human hosts via inhalation of its airborne asexual spores (conidia). In immunocompromised individuals, the conidia of this fungus can germinate in the lung and result in severe systemic infections characterised by widespread tissue and organ damage. Conversely, in healthy hosts, the innate immune system is instrumental in eliminating the conidia and preventing disease progression. As with numerous other pathogenic fungi, A. fumigatus possesses a set of virulence factors that facilitate its infective mechanism and the circumvention of immune defences in susceptible hosts. The intrinsic capacity of A. fumigatus to form complex 3D-structured biofilms, both on biotic and abiotic surfaces, represents a key determinant of its evasion of the host immune system and resistance to antifungal drugs. This review delineates the pivotal role of A. fumigatus biofilm structure and function as a significant virulence factor in pathogenic infections, such as aspergilloma and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Additionally, we discuss the importance for the development of novel antifungal drugs as drug-resistant strains continue to evolve. Furthermore, co-infections of A. fumigatus with other nosocomial pathogens have a substantial impact on patient's health outcomes. Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste is solid wastes generated from the construction, demolition, and renovation activities that constitute almost 30-40 % of globally generated solid wastes. Improper disposal and management of these materials can cause negative impacts on the environment, economy, and human health. Most research on C&D waste is limited to reduction, recycling, and reuse of the wastes. However, there is no systematic review dedicated entirely to the applicability of C&D wastes as adsorbent for waste management. This review presents the utilization of C&D wastes-based adsorbents for removing contaminants from environmental matrices covering triple edge benefits in the viewpoints of waste treatment, solid waste management, and disposal. The properties, the capability of C&D waste adsorbents on contaminant removal, and the influence of various factors on the adsorptive removal is detailed. Further, the mechanisms involved in contaminant removal by C&D waste are summarized. The review revealed that, chemisorption is the prominent mechanism of contaminant removal by most C&D wastes. Among the three types of C&D waste reviewed; concrete-based adsorbents were the most efficient for contaminant removal. Limited studies are avaiable in the literature on binary and multiple contaminant systems, reusability studies, and high dependence on solution pH, therefore further studies are warrated. As C&D waste contain trace concentration of heavy metals and contaminants, its leaching potential at different pH levels and adsorbate concentration need to be conducted, which has been hitherto neglected. Background: The military environment is characterized by unpredictable situations, intensive training, demanding workload, and job-associated stressors, which make it highly stressful. Mentorship and mental well-being training could be beneficial to both officers and the new adolescent recruits of the Indian Air Force (IAF)., Aim: This study aimed at evaluating the effect of a multi-disciplinary structured training on mentoring and mental well-being among officers and instructors in the IAF., Methods: Seventy IAF officers/instructors underwent a week-long multi-disciplinary structured training program, which was conducted at a tertiary care neuro-psychiatric hospital in South India. A quasi-experimental design with a single-group pre- and post-test was adopted. Outcome measures included a) knowledge on mentorship and mental health and b) self-perceived competence in addressing mental health distress., Results: Post training, there was a statistically significant improvement in scores on mentorship/mental health knowledge and a significant increase in self-perceived competence in addressing mental distress., Conclusion: Mentorship and mental well-being training for officers and instructors in the IAF improved mental health knowledge and self-perceived competence. Soil acidification in managed ecosystems such as agricultural lands principally results from the increased releasing of protons (H + ) from the transformation reactions of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) containing compounds. The incorporation of liming materials can neutralize the protons released, hence reducing soil acidity and its adverse impacts to the soil environment, food security, and human health. Biochar derived from organic residues is becoming a source of carbon input to soil and provides multifunctional values. Biochar can be alkaline in nature, with the level of alkalinity dependent upon the feedstock and processing conditions. This review covers the fundamental aspects of soil acidification and of the use of biochar to address constraints related to acidic soil. Biochar is increasingly considered as an effective soil amendment for reducing soil acidity owing to its liming potential, thereby enhancing soil fertility and productivity in acid soils. Biochar amended clay layer has emerged as a sustainable hydraulic barrier for hazardous municipal waste containment system. The effects of pore fluid salinity on soil shrinkage and water retention characteristics of biochar amended clay are unknown. This study aims to investigate the behavior of soil shrinkage and water retention of biochar amended kaolin under different pore fluid salinity. A series of volumetric shrinkage and water retention tests were conducted on biochar amended kaolin in sodium chloride solution at initial concentrations of 1 %, 5 %, and 10 %. Biochar addition increased the shrinkage limit and minimum void ratio of kaolin by up to 17 % and 11 %, respectively. Air entry value of kaolin increased by 6-88 times with an increase in pore fluid salinity, caused by interparticle aggregation. Micrographs showed that biochar intrapore was filled by kaolin particles, partially hindering the interparticle aggregation of clay in the salt solution. Biochar addition lowered zeta potential on the surface of kaolin particles by 50-75 %, indicating that the immobilisation of excess sodium ions was achieved by biochar. Correspondingly, osmotic suction of pore fluid decreased by 21-64 % due to biochar's ion absorption. The findings highlighted that biochar addition to kaolin specimens minimises NaCl-induced soil shrinkage and reduces the pore fluid salinity. Object affordance, a characterization of the different functionalities of an object, refers to an object's numerous possibilities of interaction. It has a significant part to play in priming motoric actions which depends on the actor's spontaneous neurological behaviour. Action Observation (AO) and Motor Imagery (MI) also lead to the stimulation of motor system. In fact, AO and MI result in activation of overlapping brain areas as the actual motor task. AO combined with MI (referred to as AO+MI) initiates higher cortical activity in comparison with either MI or AO alone. In this paper, we investigate the influence of affordance driven motor priming during AO, MI and AO + MI. Source current density as an EEG parameter is estimated by Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA). Our results demonstrate that affordance driven motor priming during AO+MI indicates stronger electrophysiological and behavioural changes. This is evident from the N2 ERP component. Further, the current source density (in brain regions associated with motor planning) during affordance driven AO+MI is found to be maximum.

Soil is an integral part of the ecosystem because it serves as a habitat for various microorganisms and lays the foundation for supporting plant growth and development. Therefore, factors such as increased anthropogenic activities hand by hand with other natural processes that harm the ecosystem may eventually lead to a decline in soil quality and fertility, hindering the growth of plants and soil microbial communities. Given the current global scenario of increasing human intervention, it is essential to find effective measures and reliable technologies to restore soil quality. Biochar is an emerging soil ameliorant employed for soil health restoration and is primarily generated through the anoxygenic pyrolysis of biomass. The biochar application in soil remediation may be beneficial due to biochar's unique physicochemical properties, including high carbon and metal fixation abilities. In addition, biochar possesses abilities to reduce the plant's environmental stress injuries. This review briefly overviewed the ingredients and mechanism of biochar productions. The current work represents the study on morphology and reproductive biology of two indigenous torrential fishes, Balitora brucei and Psilorhynchus balitora, for the first time. The Gray's stone loach Balitora brucei and balitora minnow Psilorhynchus balitora abound in the torrential water bodies of South East Asia. The current paper redescribes morphology based on the fresh collection. Specific parameters of reproductive biology on both the fishes have been studied for the first time. Both the species were adapted to the same ecological conditions of the river Ranganadi. Fish specimens were collected at a fortnightly interval from the river in the Lakhimpur district of Assam, India. The detailed study includes morphological data analyzed with Mann-Whitney U-test and specific reproductive parameters such as condition factor (K), gonado-somatic index (GSI), modified gonado-somatic index (MGSI), and Dobriyal index (DI). Progressive development of the gonads was confirmed with dissection and histological study. Both the species are multiple breeders with prolonged reproductive seasons ranging from 4 to 5 months. Both the fishes are found to be migrants from upstream, and a good number of individuals were recorded during the monsoon season, reflecting the sampling site as a breeding ground. During winter, the local people use various chemicals, piscicidal plants, and electric instruments for fishing resulting in a steep decline in the number of individuals for both the species. Moreover, the effect of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) dam is evident on the decline of the ichthyofaunal diversity of the river.
