Palhinhaea cernua, a lycophyte, and Dicranopteris linearis, a fern, are commonly observed in solfatara fields in Kyushu, Japan, but their distribution trends are different. The aim of this study was to determine why P. cernua is more abundant in areas closer to fumaroles from both a soil and plant perspective. Samples of P. cernua and D. linearis, as well as their respective growing soils, were collected, and the mineral properties, including the concentration of various mineral elements and inorganic anions and δ15N, were determined. P. cernua was better adapted to soil with lower pH, higher soluble aluminum concentrations, and poorer calcium and phosphorus concentrations than D. linearis. A positive correlation was observed between shoot nitrogen concentration and both shoot sulfur concentration and soil water-soluble sulfur concentration in P. cernua, implying the involvement of sulfur in nitrogen acquisition in P. cernua. The results also suggested that D. linearis mainly uses soil NO3-N, while P. cernua uses NH4-N, which is predominant and excessive in the solfatara fields, particularly near the fumaroles. This high preference for NH4-N in P. cernua was confirmed through a cultivation experiment. While D. linearis prefers NO3-N and distributes further from fumaroles, P. cernua may have survived in the solfatara fields by utilizing NH4-N and sulfur, which are abundant near fumaroles where competition from other plant species is minimal. Global warming-induced climate change haunts the world, posing a critical threat to plant health and crop production. Overusing chemical fertilizers and pesticides poses a significant threat to soil health. Ceanothus velutinus (snowbrush) is a drought-tolerant, actinorhizal native plant found in the Intermountain West region of the US that harbors many plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). In this study, we evaluated the effects of PGPR CK-06, CK-22, CK-44, and CK-50 from C. velutinus on the growth and development of two tall fescue genotypes: (i) a lawn-type tall fescue blend and (ii) an endophyte-free forage-type tall fescue known as Armory. Tall fescue plants were grown in field soil and sand mix in pots and treated twice with 5 mL of bacterial inoculum. Two isolates, CK-06 and CK-22, significantly increased tiller numbers (p < 0.05) in the lawn-type tall fescue blend, and all isolates showed a significant increase in fresh and dry weight compared to the control. Isolate CK-22 significantly increased the tiller number and fresh and dry weight of the forage-type tall fescue Armory compared to the control. Isolates CK-44 and CK-50 tested positive for sulfur-oxidizing properties, and CK-44 was able to restore the sulfur content in sulfur-deficient soil compared to the control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulfur is a critical element for plant growth and development, serving as a component of amino acids (cysteine and methionine), iron–sulfur clusters, proteins, glutathione, coenzymes, and auxin precursors. Deficiency or low concentrations of sulfur in the soil can lead to significant growth retardation in plants. The objective of our study was to examine the effects of sulfur (S) deficiency and excess on morphological symptoms, sulfur and nitrogen (N) metabolism, as well as antioxidant activity in soybean. We found that S starvation decreased the fine root length, biomass, and activity, and the chlorophyll content was reduced, while excess sulfur promotes lateral root growth. In contrast to sulfur excess, sulfur deficiency inhibits N and S metabolism levels in both subsurface and above-ground parts, and induced the expression of some sulfur transporters (SULTRs). In this study, we created soybean hairy root lines overexpressing the SULTR gene (GmSULTR2;1a) to observe metabolic changes following sulfur deficiency treatment. The results showed that GmSULTR2;1a saved the sulfur-deficient phenotype, and the antioxidant enzyme activity was much higher than that of the wildtype in the absence of sulfur. Sulfur (S) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, influencing not only crop yields but also the composition and function of soil microbial communities. However, the differential effects of S fertilization on abundant and rare taxa in agricultural soils remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impact of different S fertilizer types on maize yield and the structure and stability of soil microbial communities, with a particular focus on abundant and rare taxa. S fertilization led to significant increases maize yield on two typical soils (black soil and sandy soil) (5.3–24.3%) and altered soil properties, including reducing pH (0.04–0.20) and increasing the available sulfur (AS) content (3.8–8.0 mg kg−1), with ammonium sulfate having a more pronounced effect than elemental sulfur. Microbial analysis revealed distinct impacts on the diversity and community structure of both abundant and rare taxa. Elemental sulfur reduced the alpha diversity of abundant taxa more than ammonium sulfate, while NMDS indicated significant shifts in community structures, particularly among abundant taxa. Network analysis showed that S fertilization decreased the complexity of microbial interactions among rare taxa, with ammonium sulfate leading to simpler networks and elemental sulfur resulting in higher modularity. SEM highlighted that the diversity of rare taxa played a crucial role in influencing maize yield, alongside direct effects from soil properties such as AS and SAR (aryl sulfatase). Functional predictions demonstrated that amino acid metabolism and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism pathways were enriched in rare taxa, suggesting significant implications for soil health and crop productivity. This study provides new insights into the roles of abundant and rare bacterial taxa under S fertilization, emphasizing their importance in optimizing fertilization strategies for enhanced crop yield in specific soil types. Andosols are soils characterized by relatively high sulfur concentrations, but also by their low phosphorus availability for crops and vegetables. We assessed the effect of soil type on the concentrations of sulfur and phosphorus in plants using handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis on herbarium specimens collected from Andosols and non-volcanic soils in Japan. The sulfur concentrations in plants from Andosols were higher than plants from non-volcanic soils, but there was no significant difference between their foliar phosphorus concentrations. Only three specimens out of 1203 herbarium specimens were below the sulfur concentration (1000 mg kg−1) needed for adequate growth of crops, but about half of specimens were below that for phosphorus (2000 mg kg−1). The sulfur concentrations were high in herbaceous plants, especially in plants from the Brassicaceae and Liliaceae families. Overall, the results show that the sulfur concentrations in wild plants from Japan were higher in Andosols, with a low risk for sulfur deficiency. In contrast, the effect of soil type on the phosphorus concentrations in plants was small, and this may be explained because most wild plants grow under phosphorus-limiting conditions. Finally, the analysis reveals a strong correlation between sulfur and phosphorus concentrations in plants, suggesting the existence of a mechanism that controls the sulfur and phosphorus concentration ratios. Planting nitrogen-fixing plants in post-mining sites and similar degraded areas is a common approach to speed up soil development and buildup of the nitrogen pool in soil organic matter. The aim of this study was to explore if slower growth of alder seedlings in initial post-mining sites results from adverse soil conditions or lack of microbial symbionts. To address this question, we sampled young soil (age 15 years) and more developed soil (age 70 years) from heaps after coal mining near Sokolov (Czech Republic). Soil samples were sterilized and not inoculated or inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or AMF + Frankia, followed by planting with alder (Alnus glutinosa) seedlings germinated and precultured under sterile conditions. The effect of soil age on alder growth appeared to be non-significant. The only significant growth effect was seen with Frankia inoculation, implicating this inoculum as a key factor in later succession in post-mining soils. When the soil was fully inoculated, alder biomass was higher in developed soil supplied with iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P), indicating that iron and phosphorus availability may affect alder growth. In young soil, alder growth was highest with a combination of iron, phosphorus, and sulfur (S), and a positive effect of sulfur in young soil may correspond with a reduced, alkaline soil pH and increased phosphorus and iron availability. Highlights: The pH buffering capacity was higher in volcanic than non-volcanic soils. The sodium concentration increased exponentially in volcanic soils. The sulfate input increased the sulfur mineralization in soils. Reusing the by-products from wood pulp processing can promote the efficient use of resources. In this sense, the objective of this research was to determine the agronomic efficiency of CaCO3 and Na2SO4 by-products from wood pulp processing to establish criteria for their use and avoid undesirable side effects when applying these materials to the soil. Six treatments in proportions of 1; 0.9; 0.75; 0.5, 0.25, and 0, of CaCO3/Na2SO4, respectively, were incubated at a constant temperature and humidity for 15 days. The first proportion consisted of 100% CaCO3, while M1 mixed 90% CaCO3 and 10% Na2SO4, M2: 75% CaCO3 and 25% Na2SO4, M3: 50% CaCO3 and 50% Na2SO4, M4: 25% CaCO3 and 75% Na2SO4, with the last proportion comprised of 100% Na2SO4. Samples of 40 g from two soil series, Licantén (Inceptisol) and San José (Andisol), were used. The rates applied for each treatment were 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 g of material per kg of dry soil. At the end of the incubation period, pH in water, pH in CaCl2, exchange bases (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+) and extractable sulfur were determined. The results showed that the San José soil had a pH buffering capacity three times higher than that of the Licantén soil. The linear increase in pH was thus explained by the soil type in relation to the applied rate of CaCO3. The analysis of the increase in the exchangeable Na percentage (ESP) showed that the soils increased up to about 70% of their ESP with the highest added rate of Na2SO4. The application of a mixture of 25% Na2SO4 and 75% CaCO3 resulted in an increase in the ESP close to 15%; therefore, it is not recommended to use mixtures with a Na2SO4 content higher than 25% in these soils. Finally, we affirm that for M2 the maximum recommended dose for application should be 4 Mg ha−1, i.e., 3 g of material per kg of soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aims: Phosphorus (P) availability in calcareous soils is limited. Acidifying the soil by adding sulfur (S) or enhancing microbial activity by adding carbon (C) can increase P bioavailability. However, understanding of the impact of the combined application of P, S and C on P availability in calcareous soils is lacking. In this study, we investigated the effects of heterogeneous (co-localized) supply of different combinations of P, S and C on the maize (Zea mays L.) shoot and root growth and soil P availability in calcareous soil with low available P. Methods: A rhizo-box experiment with heterogeneous supply of P, S and C was conducted to assess the responses of maize growth, root morphology and physiology, as well as soil P availability. Results: Heterogeneous low P (P1) with S supply significantly increased shoot and root biomass, shoot P content and P-use efficiency (PUE) compared to homogenous or heterogeneous P1 supply alone. Application of S decreased the rhizosphere soil pH and stimulated the proliferation of maize roots. By contrast, heterogeneous P1 and C supply did not change shoot biomass, P uptake or PUE but decreased root biomass. The addition of C, however, enhanced acid phosphatase activity and carboxylates concentration in the rhizosphere, and increased NaHCO3-extractable P, implying enhanced P availability. Conclusion: Adding S combined with P is an effective approach to engineer the rhizosphere by increasing maize growth and PUE in calcareous soil, whereas adding C increased NaHCO3-extractable soil P but did not influence maize shoot growth. Sulfur fertilization plays a crucial role in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production, influencing both protein concentration and grain yield. Wheat, being one of the most important food crops globally, requires efficient management of essential nutrients, including sulfur and nitrogen, to achieve optimal production. This study aimed to quantify the effect of sulfur fertilization on wheat protein concentration and grain yield and the relationship with nitrogen through two complementary methods: a comprehensive meta-analysis and a controlled greenhouse experiment. The meta-analysis, encompassing 55 studies from 20 countries with 545 comparisons, quantified the overall response of wheat to sulfur fertilization in diverse field environments, examining the effects based on soil texture and organic matter content. The greenhouse study investigated the effects of varying sulfur application rates and sources on protein concentration and grain yield and analyzed the relationship between sulfur and nitrogen concentrations in the grain. The meta-analysis showed overall positive effects of sulfur application on both protein concentration (2.1%) and grain yield (4.2%), with the magnitude of these effects varying based on soil texture and organic matter content. Sandy soils and soils with low organic matter content exhibited the most pronounced responses to sulfur fertilization. The greenhouse experiment revealed responses of both protein concentration and grain yield to increasing sulfur application rates, indicating an optimal rate beyond which additional sulfur may not provide further benefits. A strong positive correlation between sulfur and nitrogen concentrations in the grain highlighted their interdependence in wheat nutrition. These findings emphasize the importance of considering soil properties and the sulfur–nitrogen interaction when developing site-specific sulfur fertilization strategies for wheat. This study focuses on the chemical composition of cloud water (CW) and rainwater (RW) collected at Sinhagad, a high-altitude station (1450 m AMSL) located in the western region of India. The samples were collected during the monsoon over two years (2016–2017). The chemical analysis suggests that the concentration of total ionic constituents was three times higher in CW than in RW, except for NH4+ (1.0) and HCO3− (0.6). Compared to RW, high concentrations of SO42− and NO3− were observed in CW. The weighted average RW pH (6.5 ± 0.3) was slightly more alkaline than CW pH (6.1 ± 0.5). This can be attributed to the high concentrations of neutralizing ions such as nss-Ca2+, nss-Mg2+, K+, and NH4+, indicating the greater extent of wet scavenging during rainfall. These ions counteract the acidity generated by SO42− and NO3−. A high correlation between Ca2+, Na+, K+, NO3−, and SO42− makes it difficult to estimate the contribution of SO42− from different sources. Anthropogenic sulfur emissions and soil dust significantly influence the ionic composition of clouds and rain. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to identify the contribution of different sources to the samples. In the CW, the extracted factors were cooking and vehicles, aging sea salt, agriculture, and dust. In RW, the factors were industries, cooking and vehicles, agriculture and dust, and aging sea salt. Chemical fungicides can effectively prevent and control powdery mildew, but they can also leave pesticide residues in the environment and on cucumbers. In this study, we added sulfur powder to the soil where cucumbers were grown to see how it affected the occurrence of powdery mildew. The results showed that adding sulfur increased sulfur absorption by the cucumbers, improved plant immunity, and reduced the incidence of powdery mildew. Furthermore, adding sulfur to the soil increased soluble protein content in cucumber leaves, enhanced photosynthesis, and significantly increased fruit yield. Additionally, sulfur addition decreased soil dehydrogenase activity and increased sucrase activity, potentially impacting soil microbial activity. In conclusion, this study found that adding sulfur had a positive inhibitory effect on the occurrence of cucumber powdery mildew while not significantly impacting the soil environment. Adequate nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) fertilization of oilseed rape crops is necessary to obtain good-quality oil and post-extraction rapeseed meal. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different doses of N fertilization (100, 160 and 220 kg ha−1) and S (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg ha−1) on the value of seeds of three winter oilseed rape genotypes. Two winter oilseed rape genotypes obtained by mutagenesis (cultivar Polka and breeding genotype PN440) were characterized by changed fatty acid profile. The cultivar Polka, type HO (high oleic), had a high content of oleic acid (C18:1, 78.0%) and the breeding genotype PN440, type HOLL (high-oleic and low-linolenic), had a high content of oleic acid (C18:1, 75.0%) and a low content of linolenic acid (C18:3, 3.0%). We also used the canola type of winter oilseed rape cultivar, Monolit. The analysed winter oilseed rape genotypes responded similarly to the N and S fertilization factors with regard to the content of crude fat and total protein in the seeds and the composition of fatty acids in the oil. N fertilization increased the content of glucosinolates (GLS-alkenyl, indole and total) in seeds, whereas S application decreased the content of saturated fatty acids (stearic acid-C18:0) in oil and increased the content of alkenyl and total glucosinolates (GLSs) in seeds. A significant interaction between N and S was observed for crude-fat and total-protein content. This study suggests that ensuring an adequate supply of both nitrogen and sulfur in the soil is essential for optimizing meal and oil quality in different types of winter oilseed rape cultivars. The extent to which soil enzyme activity in assessing soil nutrient availability is useful has been controversial. In this review, we discuss the utility of ecoenzymatic stoichiometry (i.e. the ratio of nutrient- to carbon (C)-acquiring enzyme activities) on the basis of the resource allocation model for ecoenzyme synthesis. Both the selection of appropriate enzymes and the balance between relative amounts of substrates and enzymes in the soil are decisive factors in utilizing the ecoenzymatic stoichiometry. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can evaluate the availability of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, and sulfur in many soils in which the enzyme catalytic reactions are substrate-limited but not enzyme-limited. However, the ecoenzymatic stoichiometry approach does not seem to be applicable in soils where microbes are limited by factors other than nutrient availability, such as low temperature, where the enzyme catalytic reactions are enzyme-limited. Certain enzymes, such as N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase and protease, appear to be insensitive to soil N availability, because they release compounds containing both N and C which serve as sources for both N and C/energy. We propose the use of enzymes such as L-asparaginase and urease as N-acquiring enzymes that release a compound containing N but not C (i.e. NH4+) as the hydrolysis product. Ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can be considered as an indicator of long-term (weeks) temporally integrated soil nutrient availability, rather than instantaneous availability, for plants as well as microbes, because of (i) the long-term persistence of extracellular enzymes in soils; (ii) a significant correlation between ecoenzymatic stoichiometry and the measurements reflecting the quantity of long-term available nutrients in soil; and (iii) a significant correlation between ecoenzymatic stoichiometry and plant nutrient uptake. This review also identifies challenges in assessing microbial nutrient limitation using ecoenzymatic stoichiometry. With a comprehensive understanding of underlying mechanisms and limitations, ecoenzymatic stoichiometry can be used as a biologically relevant indicator of nutrient availability in combination with other approaches such as conventional chemical extraction methods and the nutrient addition approach. Canary grass (Phalaris canariensis L.) is a versatile crop with global significance; it is primarily cultivated for its small elliptical seeds, which are used as bird feed and for human consumption. This crop is adapted to various climates and soils, so it can be grown successfully in Hungary. However, challenges such as weed control, climate change impacts, and soil factors require strategic management for sustained success in canary grass cultivation. Our study investigated the impact of management and environmental (as seasonal and soil) factors on pre-harvest weed vegetation in canary grass fields in Southeast Hungary between 2017 and 2020. In addition to showing the weed vegetation of the canary grass, the aim of our work was to promote more effective weed management of canary grass by revealing correlations between soil, seasonality, and management variables, influencing weed diversity and coverage. Using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and correlation tests, we tested significant variables, providing insights into the complex interactions affecting weed composition. A redundancy analysis (RDA) further unveiled the relationships between explanatory variables and weed species' composition. The findings offer valuable information for effective weed management strategies in canary grass cultivation. Our comprehensive study on canary grass fields in Southeast Hungary sheds light on significant factors influencing weed composition and abundance. The average weed coverage was 10.8%, with summer annuals and creeping perennials being the most prevalent life forms. Echinochloa crus-galli, Cirsium arvense, Xanthium italicum, and Setaria viridis were among the dominant species. ANCOVAs revealed the impact of soil, management, and seasonal factors on weed cover, species richness, diversity, and yield levels. Soil properties like texture, pH, and nitrogen content showed varying effects on weed parameters. The vintage effect, tillage systems, and farming practices also played crucial roles. The redundancy analysis highlighted the influence of the year, soil sulfur content, and winter preceding crops on weed composition. In conclusion, the herbaceous vegetation in the studied area is dominated by summer germinating and creeping perennial species. Despite slight differences in average coverage and occurrence, a well-defined set of significant species is evident. Multicollinearity among variables suggests limitations to further increase the number of variables that can be included in the analysis. The ANCOVAs showed that the soil, seasonal, and farming variables significantly influence overall weed vegetation and crop yield, with a lesser impact on species richness and diversity. The reduced RDA model highlights the strong influence of the year on species' composition, emphasizing the inherent factors during canary grass cultivation that are challenging to modify through farming practices. During the last decades, forest soils in Central Europe recovered from former sulfur and acid deposition. As external S input into forests has strongly decreased and legacy S pools in the soils are diminishing, internal S cycling through mineralization will increasingly become important for ecosystem nutrition. However, it is not known how microbial biomass is affected by the S pool change in the formerly S surplus soils. Here, we present data on the status quo of C, N, and S in microbial biomass in relation to contents in mineral soil and organic layer. The results of forest soil in Eastern Germany (low and high liming), which is slowly recovering from former pollution, are compared to those of a site remote from air pollution in the Swiss Alps. The contents of C, N, and S in soil as well as in microbial biomass were clearly higher in the organic layer than in mineral topsoil at all sites. Despite the generally low content in the mineral A-horizon, the clean-air site showed indications of a more active S-turnover as compared to the high-pollution site. Liming at the high-pollution site improved the conditions for microbial growth (pH increase) in the organic layer resulting in more mobile S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An attempt was made to study the response of nano-sulfur in groundnut using four levels of nano-sulfur (NS) and conventional sulfur (CS) fertilizers in a completely randomized block design and replicated thrice. The results indicated that application of nano-sulfur @ 30 kg S ha−1 recorded 0.76 mg root sulfur uptake plant−1, 40.5 mg shoot sulfur uptake plant−1, 14.9 mg kernel sulfur uptake plant−1, and 3.09 mg shell sulfur uptake plant−1 higher in comparison to conventional sulfur @ 40 kg S ha−1 recorded root, shoot, kernel and shell sulfur uptake of 0.53, 35.8, 11.4 and 2.46 mg plant−1, respectively. The highest pod yield was recorded at 12.4 g plant−1 with nano-sulfur application @ 30 kg S ha−1 when compared to conventional sulfur @ 40 kg S ha−1 registered at 10.7 g plant−1. Quality parameters such as oil, crude protein, methionine, cysteine, and total free amino acid content were recorded highest under nano-sulfur application @ 30 kg S ha−1 i.e. 48.3%, 27.2%, 3.44 mg g −1, 1.89 mg g−1 and 46.3 mg g−1 respectively whereas conventional sulfur @ same set of sulfur treatment observed (46.7% oil, 25.1% crude protein, 3.16 mg methionine g−1, 1.75 mg cysteine g−1, and 39.6 mg total free amino acids g−1. Finally, the results concluded that the application of nano-S @ 30 kg S ha−1 is sufficient to attain higher sulfur use efficiency with a reduction of sulfur fertilizer to the tune of 25% besides augmenting the soil sulfur reserve without harming the environment. Purpose: The use of sewage sludge associated with natural rock-based fertilizers can increase nutrient solubility and soil fertility. From this perspective, this study evaluated changes in the chemical soil attributes and the nutrient availability rate after the application of sewage sludge, natural phosphate, and elemental sulfur in soils with different clay contents. Method: The study was conducted in a controlled environment and was set up in a completely randomized design with four replications in a 3 x 5 x 5 factorial arrangement consisting of soil with three clay contents: 28%, 34%, and 42%; five fertilization managements: unfertilized (Control), fertilized with natural phosphate (NF), fertilized with sewage sludge (SS), fertilized with natural phosphate and elemental sulfur (NF+S), and fertilized with NF+S+SS; and five evaluation times: 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after fertilization. The chemical soil attributes and the nutrient availability rate were evaluated. Results: The application of sludge, natural phosphate, and sulfur increased the contents of SOM, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, H + Al, SB, and CEC and reduced the soil pH, in addition to favoring the rate and time of availability of P, Ca, and Mg, with means higher than 50% in the soils from 30 to 120 days after application. At 120 days after application of sludge, the average availability rate of P, K, Ca, and Mg corresponded to 37, 13, 144, and 157%, respectively. Conclusion:These improvements imply savings with mineral fertilizers and contribute to adopting conservationist and sustainable practices. Long-term deposition of atmospheric pollutants emitted from coal combustion and their effects on the eco-environment have been extensively studied around coal-fired power plants. However, the effects of coal-fired power plants on soil microbial communities have received little attention through atmospheric pollutant deposition and coal-stacking. Here, we collected the samples of power plant soils (PS), coal-stacking soils (CSS) and agricultural soils (AS) around three coal-fired power plants and background control soils (BG) in Huainan, a typical mineral resource-based city in East China, and investigated the microbial diversity and community structures through a high-throughput sequencing technique. Coal-stacking significantly increased (p < 0.05) the contents of total carbon, total nitrogen, total sulfur and Mo in the soils, whereas the deposition of atmospheric pollutants enhanced the levels of V, Cu, Zn and Pb. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Thaumarchaeota, Thermoplasmata, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant taxa in all soils. The bacterial community showed significant differences (p < 0.05) among PS, CSS, AS and BG, whereas archaeal and fungal communities showed significant differences (p < 0.01) according to soil samples around three coal-fired power plants. The predominant environmental variables affecting soil bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities were Mo-TN-TS, Cu-V-Mo, and organic matter (OM)-Mo, respectively. Certain soil microbial genera were closely related to multiple key factors associated with stacking coal and heavy metal deposition from power plants. Spartina alterniflora, an invasive plant widely distributed in China's coastal regions, has had a significant impact on the stability of wetland ecosystems and elemental biogeochemical cycles. The invasion of S. alterniflora has been found to lead to the accumulation of sulfides in the soil. The cycling of sulfur and iron in the soil is closely interconnected. Coastal estuarine wetlands are influenced by both freshwater in rivers and seawater tides, as well as the frequent variations in redox conditions caused by tidal fluctuations, which makes the cycling of sulfur and iron in the soil invaded by S. alterniflora more intricate. In this study, field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to explore the effects of S. alterniflora invasion and hydrological changes on the cycling of sulfur and iron as well as related functional microorganisms in the soil. The invasion of S. alterniflora showed an increase in soil reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) components in both high and low marshes of Jiuduansha wetland, with higher content observed in summer and autumn. The tidal simulation experiments revealed abundant sulfate in seawater tidal conditions could promote the formation of acid volatile sulfides (AVS) in the soil of low marshes invaded by S. alterniflora and ensuring the continuous increase in AVS content. Diffusive gradients in-thin-films (DGT) technology indicated the existence of high-concentration soluble S2− enrichment zones in the soil of low marshes invaded by S. alterniflora, which may be related to S. alterniflora root exudates. Tidal action increased the relative abundance of sulfur-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the soil of low marshes, and under the influence of seawater tidal action, SRB exhibited higher relative abundance. However, S. alterniflora might inhibit the activity of iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) in the soil of low marshes. In conclusion, S. alterniflora may enhance the sulfate reduction rate and promote the formation of free sulfides in tidal salt marsh ecosystems by releasing root exudates that stimulate the activity of SRB, while concurrently inhibiting the activity of FeRB and reducing their competition with SRB. Purpose: The extensive invasion of Spartina alterniflora in coastal wetlands of China has posed a ruinous risk to biodiversity and ecosystem constancy. Sulfur is an essential nutrient, while sulfide is biologically toxic and could couple with iron. The influence of S. alterniflora invasion on sulfur and iron cycling in sediment remains poorly understood. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate how the invasion of S. alterniflora affects the sulfur and iron cycles in sediments in coastal wetlands. Methods: Field investigations were conducted in the Jiuduansha Wetland to examine the different sulfur and iron components, microbial communities, and functional genes related to the sulfur cycle in soils colonized by S. alterniflora and in native coenosis. Results: The invasion of S. alterniflora caused the accumulation of reduced inorganic sulfur (RIS) in the sediments, and the RIS components were stratified at different sediment depths. The activity of S. alterniflora roots and the presence of low-elevation tides promoted sulfate reduction and the accumulation of acid volatile sulfide (AVS), primarily through abiotic chemical processes. These processes facilitated the invasion and expansion of S. alterniflora. Meanwhile, S. alterniflora could promote sulfate reduction by altering sediment physicochemical properties, such as pH. However, the correlation between RIS components and salinity or Eh in the low-intertidal zones was not significant due to the influence of tidal action. Nevertheless, S. alterniflora could buffer sulfide by enriching Fe, rapidly reducing Fe(III) and forming pyrite, thus mitigating sulfide stress. Conclusion: The invasion of S. alterniflora in tidal environments increased sediment sulfide levels, while S. alterniflora is able to mitigate the effects of sulfide stress on itself by efficiently utilizing iron. In recent years, sulfur inputs into the soil have greatly diminished due to the significant decrease in SO2 emissions. Plant nutrients, like sulfur, can be released by the mineralisation of soil organic matter (SOM), which is a complicated mixture of substances (or fractions) like glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) and fulvic acids (FA), humic acids (HA), humic substances (HS) and others. GRSP, FA, HA, and HS content, as well as the content of mineral and organic fractions of sulfur, was determined in different mineral and organic fertiliser treatments of the long-term field experiment. Using these results, the sulfur content in GRSP was calculated based on the soil's organic matter carbon and soil's organic bound sulfur (CSOM/SORG) ratio. Sulfur content in GRSP was 4.08-5.46 (easily extractable GRSP), 9.77-15.7 (difficultly extractable (GRSP), and 13.9-21.1 (total GRSP) mg S/kg of soil. Overall, the application of the organic fertiliser caused an increase in S content bound to GRSP. A strong significant relationship was also observed between GRSP fractions and soil organic sulfur. The content of sulfur in soils has been declining. Possible option to supply sulfur into the soil can be utilization of waste sulfur from biogas production. Two pot experiments with identical treatments were established to examine the effect of waste sulfur from biogas plant applied solely and in mixture with other nutrients on the growth and yield of oilseed rape. The included treatments were control, waste elemental sulfur (S), S+boron (B), S+B+humic substances (HS), S+B+HS+ammonium sulfate (AS), S+B+HS+ammonium nitrate (AN). The results from the first experiment showed significant increase in N-tester values and aboveground biomass after the treatments with S enhanced with both mineral fertilizers compared to any other treatments. The content of N and S in plants was also higher after these treatments. This was confirmed by second experiment. The seed yield was highest after the same treatments. The result from both experiments proved, that reutilization of waste S can be an interesting option. The application of sole waste S is a viable possibility. However, the mixture of sulfur with AS and AN is a more optimal alternative. Such combination could lead to better N use efficiency due to the co-application of N and S and also presents an interesting compromise to an overall lower consumption of mineral fertilizers (especially N) while adding more sulfur to the soil, especially in mixture with AS. Essential oils have great commercial importance for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. Because they have therapeutic, flavoring and antioxidant properties, due to their active principles. Studies on the form of cultivation, as well as fertilization management are necessary, since information related to the production of secondary metabolites is still insufficient. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the yield, content and composition of rosemary essential oil cultivated with different concentrations of nitrogen and sulfur in the soil. The treatments were distributed in a 4x2 factorial scheme with four nitrogen doses: 105, 210, 315 and 420 mg dm3, combined with two sulfur doses: 32 and 64 mg dm3 and with seven replications, totaling 56 experimental units. According to the results obtained, the combination of doses 420 of N and 64 S provided the best contents and yield of rosemary essential oil. a-pinene and 1,8-cineole had the highest concentrations for all treatments studied, with about 85% to 95% of the total constituents of the oils. Persulfate is considered a convenient and efficient remediation agent for organic contaminated soil. However, the potential risk of sulfur into the soil remediation by persulfate remains ignored. In this study, glass bottles with different persulfate dosages and groundwater tables were set up to simulate persulfate remediation of organic pollutants (aniline). The results found sulfate to be the main end-product (83.0%‒99.5%) of persulfate remediation after 10 days. Moreover, H 2 S accounted for 93.4%‒99.4% of sulfur reduction end-products, suggesting that H 2 S was the final fate of sulfur. H 2 S was released rapidly after one to three days at a maximum concentration of 33.0 ppm, which is sufficient to make a person uncomfortable. According to the fitted curve results, H 2 S concentration decreased to a safe concentration (0.15 ppm) after 20‒85 days. Meanwhile, the maximum concentration of methanethiol reached 0.6 ppm. These results indicated that secondary pollution from persulfate remediation could release harmful gases over a long time. The sulfur biogeochemical cycle controls the sulfur dynamics in the soil. In contrast to almost all deposited sulfur leaching out in temperate catchments, approximately 80% of the deposited S is retained in the catchments in subtropical regions. However, the mechanisms for sulfur retention were unclear, hindering the understanding of potential threats of legacy sulfur with environmental changes. Here, we demonstrated that sulfate reduction (as sulfide fixed in soil) was a prominent yet overlooked mechanism for sulfur retention in addition to the widely recognized sulfate adsorption in soil, based on a study on soil sulfur storage and stable isotope signatures within entire soil profiles in a typical subtropical catchment in China. Using a dual‐isotopic model, the sulfate reduction flux was further determined to be 30% of the S deposition. Due to a lot of deposited sulfur fixed via sulfate reduction, the release of soil legacy sulfur would be less in response to decreasing sulfur deposition compared to the projections only considering adsorption. However, the remobilization of large amounts of reduced S should be regarded as a threat to the environment under climate change in the future. Onion flavors arise from the enzymatically produced volatile sulfur-containing sulfinic acids created when onion cells rupture. The concentrations of these flavor-associated compounds depend on genetic and environmental factors, with soil sulfur (S) availability as a primary contributor. To understand how leaching influences S availability in soils of southeastern Georgia, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a 13-month period using soils from six historic Vidalia onion fields. Soil S in the A horizon ranged from 21–126 kg ha−1 and 126–261 kg ha−1 for plant available and total S, respectively, and 17–541 kg ha−1 for plant available S and 46–841 kg ha−1 of total S in the B horizon. Total S decreased 32% on average over the 13-month period, ranging from 10–65 kg ha−1. Unlike studies from other regions that determined that the overwhelming majority of soil S is organically bound, 16–64% of soil S in these soils was readily plant available, suggesting that in the sandy, low organic matter (OM) soils and thermic climate of southeastern Georgia, S retention is likely controlled by the combination of soil factors including, OM, amount and type of clay, and iron and aluminum content. While the amount of S decreased in all six soils, plant available S remained between 14–46 kg ha−1 in the A horizon, indicating it may take several seasons for soil S to appreciable decrease through leaching. Soybean is an S-loving crop, and continuous cropping might cause soil sulfur shortage. The primary objectives of this study are to determine whether Funneliformis mosseae (F. mosseae) can enhance the content of available S in S-deficient soil and thereby improve the sulfur utilization rate in soybean. The experiment used Heinong 48 (HN48), a soybean variety with a vast planting area in Heilongjiang Province, and F. mosseae was inoculated in the soil of soybean that had been continuously cropped for 0 and 3 years. The results of the barium sulfur turbidimetric assay show that the sulfur content in the soil and soybean was reduced by continuous cropping and increased by inoculation with F. mosseae; the results of the macro-genome sequencing technology, show that the diversity and abundance of bacteria in the soil was decreased by continuous cropping and increased by inoculation with F. mosseae. The sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) activity and sulfur-related gene expression levels were lower in the continuous crop group compared to the control group and higher in the F.mosseaeinoculated group compared to the control group. Continuous cropping reduced the sulfur content and ratio of soybean rhizosphere soil, affecting soil flora activity and thus soybean growth; F. mosseae inoculation increased the sulfur content of soybean root-perimeter soil and plants, increased the diversity and abundance of rhizosphere soil microorganisms, increased the expression of genes for sulfur transport systems, sulfur metabolism, and other metabolic functions related to elemental sulfur, and increased the species abundance and metabolic vigor of most SOB. In summary, continuous cropping inhibits soil sulfur uptake and utilization in soybean while the inoculation with F. mosseae can significantly improve this situation. Gordonia sp., Rhodococcus, Paenibaccilus, Mycobacterium and many other desulfurizing strains have shown good potential for dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4, 6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene (4-6-Dimethyl dibenzothiophene) and other organosulfur biodesulfurization. These are microbes which have 4S pathway to remove S from remaining calcitarant organosulfur compounds even after deep desulfurization. Sulfur compounds present in crude oils, diesel and petrol when combust in engines they emerge out in the form of elemental Sulfur, which causes environmental and health problems. Therefore, efforts are going to remove this Sulfur compounds by Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) treatment. Some organosulfur compounds remain there even after HDS, which can only remove by highly evolved microbes residing nearby petroleum-contaminated areas in refineries zone. Nature has such adopted and evolved microbes for the bioremediation of such toxic substances. Here we have isolated and characterized highly evolved and adopted Biodesulfurizing microbes present around oil refineries in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and prepare the culture collection of such highly evolved and adopted biodesulfurization microorganisms for future application of applied Industrial petroleum refineries, which can reduce the Sulfur load in the petroleum products. The several (10 different types) microbes have been reported in these soils to grow in sulfur compounds. Out of these microbes one microbe desulfurizes by 4S pathway. It was identified to be Rhodococcus erythropolis type named as Rhodococcus erythroplis KAU10. They show good potential for various organosulfur compounds (DBT, 2,4,6-Trimethyl Benzothiophene, Benzothiophene, Dibenzyl sulfide, Benzonaphthothiophene, Dibenzothiophene sulfone, along with crude oil and Petrol and Diesel. Purpose: This study was to investigate the regulation of sulfur status in continuous-cropping soybean soil by Funneliformis mosseae and Thiobacillus thioparus and promote the absorption of sulfur in soybean. To explore the interactions among F. mosseae, T. thioparus and soybean plants, this study laid a theoretical foundation for the application of F. mosseae and T. thioparus as biological agents in agricultural production. Methods: Pot culture, a two-compartment system and shake-flask culture were used in the experiment. Using F. mosseae and T. thioparus as experimental inoculants, the effects of F. mosseae on sulfur oxide of T. thioparus and their interaction on the growth of soybean plants were studied from the aspects of soil sulfur content, sulfur functional genes and the growth of soybean and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Results: The F. mosseae and T. thioparus inoculation significantly increased the abundance of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and available sulfur content in the soil, stimulated the expression of sulfate transporter genes in soybean roots, and promoted the absorption of sulfur nutrients in soybean. F. mosseae stimulated the expression of the T. thioparus sulfur-oxidation gene and enhanced the sulfur-oxidation capacity, while T. thioparus enhanced F. mosseae colonization of soybean roots. Thus, F. mosseae and T. thioparus promoted soil sulfur cycling and sulfate transport in soybean roots, which proved that F. mosseae could effectively improve the sulfur-oxidation capacity of T. thioparus. The aim of the study was to compare sulfate fertilizers and mixtures of elemental sulfur (S0) and sulfate in terms of yield and nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) status in perennial ryegrass. Mixtures of sulfate and S0 can reduce the consumption of sulfate alone. The plants were grown in soil cultures. The plants were supplemented with S0, K2SO4, MgSO4, and (NH4)SO4 or a mixture of these salts with So. Two sulfur doses were applied and the ryegrass was harvested three times. Fresh and dry weights of each swath, the N and S content, and their uptake were determined. The total fresh yield of sulfur-fertilized plants was 25 to 94% higher compared to unfertilized plants. The increases in dry matter were even more significant. Fertilizers, being a mixture of S0 and sulfate, showed the same efficiency as those containing sulfate alone. Sulfur fertilization resulted in a higher S content and its uptake, lowered N concentration in second and third swatch, and a decrease in total N uptake. In conclusion, to achieve high crop yields, soil sulfur deficiency should be corrected and fertilizers that are the mixture of elemental sulfur and sulfate are a beneficial and effective approach. Cadmium is classified as a hazardous substance of global significance by the United Nations Environment Programme, and soil cadmium pollution seriously threatens plant growth and endangers human health. Exogenous sulfur affects the uptake and accumulation of cadmium by plants, but the effect of different forms and content of sulfur on the uptake and accumulation of cadmium by different plants varies greatly. Therefore, the effects of different forms and content of sulfur on the uptake and accumulation of cadmium by crops (Oryza sativa, Triticum aestivum, Brassica chinensis, Amaranshus mangostanus, Nicotiana tabacum) and Cd-hyperaccumulation plants (Sedum plumbizincicola, Solanum nigrum) were reviewed. Subsequently, the possible mechanisms of action were summarized in terms of the effectiveness of soil Cd (sulfur affects soil pH and cadmium adsorption), the uptake of Cd by plant roots (sulfur affects the transcription levels of metal transporters, and the formation of root hair and iron plaque) and the distribution and accumulation of Cd in plants (sulfur affects root cell wall adsorption and vacuolar compartment) . This article focuses on the agronomic evaluation of the supplementation of mineral NPKMg fertilizers with elemental sulfur, magnesium, potassium, or ammonium sulfates in pot experiments with ryegrass growing in a sandy Arenosol with very low sulfur content. A benefit evaluation was carried out on the basis of biomass production, crop nutritional status, and changes in the content of soil organic matter fractions. Furthermore, the total number of bacteria, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and fungi was estimated using the qPCR technique in soil samples after 60 days of ryegrass growth. The combined application of NPKMg and sulfur or sulfate fertilizers significantly increased the summary yield of three cuttings of fresh ryegrass biomass in the range of 32.3% to 82.7%. The application, especially in the form of sulfates, significantly decreased the content of free phenolic acids. Furthermore, compared to the control, i.e., soil with NPKMg applied alone, an increase in the content of glomalin-related proteins and a decrease in the amount of water-soluble organic carbon compounds were observed. Neither the number of DNA marker copy numbers of the total bacterial community nor the nitrogen-fixing bacteria were noticeably different. In turn, the total number of genetic markers for fungi was significantly higher in soils with potassium or ammonium sulfates compared to the control soil. The general results suggest that the application of sulfur fertilizers with NPKMg mineral fertilizer can benefit crops and support soil fertility due to the stabilization of aggregates and the decrease in water-soluble organic compounds. Melanins are the most common pigments in birds and mammals. The synthesis of the sulfurated form of melanin, termed pheomelanin, is promoted by high levels of thiols in melanocytes. Exposure to elemental sulfur in the environment can potentially influence intracellular thiol levels in terrestrial animals, but this has never been investigated in the wild. This is particularly relevant in areas with a high volcanic activity that facilitate sulfur exposure. We explored for an association between the pheomelanin content of feathers in 35 breeding birds from 13 phylogenetically diverse species and 29 locations in Iceland, and the sulfur content of nearby soil samples. After controlling for the effect of phylogenetic relatedness between species, we found that the pheomelanin content of feathers was significantly correlated with the sulfur content of soil, indicating that pheomelanin production increases with sulfur exposure. Our results suggest that environmental exposure to relatively high levels of elemental sulfur promotes the expression of pheomelanin-based pigmentation phenotypes in birds, likely by an influence on intracellular thiols during development. This is the first evidence that soil chemistry can affect the phenotype of animals. Canola cultivation at high latitudes is becoming more promising in terms of modern climate change. Sustainable crop production requires an understanding of yield-limiting factors, which need to be adjusted in agricultural management first. Therefore, our study was aimed at examining the effect of climate and soil fertility factors on the canola yield from 2012 to 2015 in northwestern Russia. Simultaneously, effectiveness of chemical fertilizer (N 65 P 50 K 50 and N 100 P 75 K 75 ) rates was tested. Studied soils had light texture, high acidity and severe sulfur deficiency. Canola yield (Y) varied from 0.81 to 1.60 t·ha − 1 for the observed period. Applied fertilizer increased Y by around 30%, but this change was not significant. Climate effect testing with the FAO-AquaCrop simulation showed no noticeable water and heat stresses for the study period (0% to 20% reduction in potential Y). Among the tested soil properties, the content of organic carbon, available nitrogen and sulfur significantly correlated with Y (r = 0.58–0.66). Combining these factors together with soil pH in a path model explained 60% of variability in Y. Importantly, sulfur had the highest and most significant effect in this model. With a shortage of sulfur in the soil and an increasing world population and, thus, food consumption volume, the demand for this important nutrient is likely to increase, both globally and regionally. The purpose of this model incubation study was to evaluate the effect of fertilizer granule applications containing elemental sulfur, halloysite and phosphate rock on the content of the bioavailable form of sulfur and phosphorus, as well as dehydrogenase activity and pH value of two soils differing in granulometric composition and chemical parameters. In addition to the standard procedure of analysis of variance, the authors propose various methods of advanced statistical analysis: regression modeling, including simple regression and multiple regression, or multivariate methods of grouping objects and traits resulting in the creation of heatmaps. With respect to the control, the application of fertilizer granules generally had no significant effect on the content of available phosphorus and the activity of dehydrogenase, and had little effect on the degree of acidity of the soils tested. There was a greater effect of introducing fertilizer granules on the content of sulfate sulfur in heavy soil than in medium soil. Sulfur nutrition is a crucial part of proper crop growth. In this study, we investigated the influence of organic fertilizers in a long-term field experiment (23 years) with continuous maize monoculture. We focused on: (a) changes in the soil sulfur fraction pools, (b) the balance of total sulfur inputs and outputs, and (c) sulfur uptake by maize. The following treatments were selected: unfertilized control (Control), urea and ammonium nitrate (UAN), UAN and wheat straw (UAN + St), sewage sludge (SS), farmyard manure (FYM), and slurry (Slurry). Using sequential extraction, we determined water-soluble (SW—in water), adsorbed (Sads—in 0.032 mol L−1 NaH2PO4), and available (Sav = SW + Sads) sulfur content. Microwave-assisted digestion in an Aqua regia solution was used to measure the pseudo-total sulfur content (Spt). Organic-bound sulfur (Sorg) was calculated as a difference between Spt and Sav. We found that average biomass yields responded to a uniform 120 kg N ha−1 year−1 dose, rather than the dose of S in fertilizers, with an increase over the Control by 34–49%. The effect of an additional 33.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 on UAN + St treatment was not significant. Average sulfur uptake responded to increased yields (69-121% higher than Control), rather than the sulfur application, with the exception of SS, where the dose of sulfur was high enough to cause an additional uptake. In the topsoil, we discovered a significant decrease over time (from 1997 to 2019) in water-soluble (SW), adsorbed (Sads), available (Sav), and pseudo-total (Spt) fractions on all treatments to 29, 59, 37, and 82% of their initial values, respectively. For all treatments, the proportion of Sorg in Spt increased over time, which was caused by the decrease in mineral fractions (SW, Sads, Sav). The absolute content of Sorg decreased over time for all treatments except SS and FYM to about 85% of the initial value. Using the simple balancing method, we calculated that UAN + St, SS, FYM, and Slurry treatments annually lost 8.04, 66.1, 21.4, and 26.8 kg of S ha−1, respectively. This loss was attributed to the decrease in atmospheric depositions, as well as the release of sulfur from soil organic matter (for UAN + St and Slurry treatments) and a high proportion of easily mineralizable and inorganic sulfur from the SS treatment. Quantitation of sulfur (S) is vitally important for analysis of agricultural soil and plant samples due to the requirement of S in living organisms. Although inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a commonly used and robust instrument for multi-elemental detection, S is usually analysed by ICP-optical emission spectroscopy (OES) since S quantitation poses a particular challenge for ICP-MS due to interferences on all S isotopes. The requirement for analysis by two instruments increases time and cost for sample analysis, hence analysis by one instrument is desirable. The use of reaction gases in ICP-MS can improve the performance by shifting S to a mass for detection where no interference is present. This work explored the potential of methane as a reaction gas for analysis of S in soil and plant samples to give users an alternative option to oxygen. The product ion clusters CH 2 SH+ were monitored (m/z 47 and 49 on ICP-MS and with mass shift of +15 from Q1 → Q2 using 32 → 47 and 34 → 49 on triple quadrupole ICP-MS). As expected, triple quadrupole ICP-MS performed better than single quadrupole ICP-MS containing a reaction cell due to the ability to preselect the m/z of choice and remove ions that may react with methane in the reaction cell. The method detection limit (MDL) was 150 mg kg−1 S for plants and 53 mg kg−1 S for soils which is fit for requirements. This is the first-time methane has been reported as a reaction gas for analysis of S and shows promising results for agricultural samples when using a triple quadrupole ICP-MS. Results compared well to those obtained via the more commonly used ICP-optical emission spectroscopy (OES) method with results <20 % for all samples. Interlaboratory comparison samples were within 2 Z-scores of the consensus mean. In the absence of ICP-MS/MS, Q-ICP-MS with detection of cluster m/z 47 was deemed to be suitable for detection of S in plant samples, with acceptable MDL (250 mg kg−1 S), acceptable precision (<20 % RSD) and <20 % variation to the reported ICP-OES result. Farmyard manure is the most common type of organic fertilizer, and its properties depend mainly on the type of livestock, bedding material and the conditions of fermentation. Co-maturing of manure with other amendments to modify its final properties has been seen as a win–win strategy recently. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the effect of unenriched manure and manures co-matured with biochar, elemental sulfur or both amendments on the soil physico-chemical and biological properties, and plant (barley, maize) biomass production. For this purpose a pot experiment was carried out in a time-dependent way. Samples were taken from 12 week-lasting (test crop barley) and 24 week-lasting (test crop maize) pot cultivation carried out in a growth chamber. Co-matured manure with biochar showed the highest rate of maturation expressed as humic to fulvic acid ratio, its amendment to soil significantly increased the dry aboveground biomass weight in the half-time (12 weeks) of experiment. However, the effect vanished after 24 weeks. We received for this variant highest long-term (24 weeks) contents of total carbon and nitrogen in soil. Contrarily, co-matured manure with biochar and elemental sulfur led to short-term carbon sequestration (the highest total carbon in 12 weeks) due to presumed retardation of microbial-mediated transformation of nutrients. We conclude that the prolonged pot experiment with biochar or elemental sulfur enriched manure led to the increased recalcitrancy of soil organic matter and retardation of soil nutrient transformation to the plant-available form. The impact of graphene oxide (GO) nanocarbon on soil properties is mixed, with both negative and positive effects. Although it decreases the viability of some microbes, there are few studies on how its single amendment to soil or in combination with nanosized sulfur benefits soil microorganisms and nutrient transformation. Therefore, an eight-week pot experiment was carried out under controlled conditions (growth chamber with artificial light) in soil seeded with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and amended with GO or nano-sulfur on their own or their several combinations. The following variants were tested: (I) Control, (II) GO, (III) Low nano-S + GO, (IV) High nano-S + GO, (V) Low nano-S, (VI) High nano-S. Results revealed no significant differences in soil pH, dry plant aboveground, and root biomass among all five amended variants and the control group. The greatest positive effect on soil respiration was observed when GO was used alone, and this effect remained significant even when it was combined with high nano-S. Low nano-S plus a GO dose negatively affected some of the soil respiration types: NAG_SIR, Tre_SIR, Ala_SIR, and Arg_SIR. Single GO application was found to enhance arylsulfatase activity, while the combination of high nano-S and GO not only enhanced arylsulfatase but also urease and phosphatase activity in the soil. The elemental nano-S probably counteracted the GO-mediated effect on organic carbon oxidation. We partially proved the hypothesis that GO-enhanced nano-S oxidation increases phosphatase activity. Almost all plants grow well in their native soils. We hypothesized that soil microbes promote the growth of their hosts in native soils by the example of soil pH. Here, bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) indigenous to subtropical soils was grown in the native soil (the original pH = 4.85) or in pH-adjusted soils with sulfur (pH = 3.14 or 3.34) or calcium hydroxide (pH = 6.85, 8.34, 8.52 or 8.59). Plant growth, soil chemical property, and microbial community composition were characterized to reveal the microbial taxa promoting plant growth in the native soil. Results showed that shoot biomass was the highest in the native soil, while both the decrease and increase in the soil pH reduced the biomass. Compared with other soil chemical properties, soil pH was the top edaphic factor contributing to the differentiation in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal and bacterial communities. The top 3 most abundant AM fungal OTUs belonged to Glomus, Claroideoglomus, and Gigaspora, while the top 3 most abundant bacterial OTUs belonged to Clostridiales, Sphingomonas, and Acidothermus, respectively. Regression analyses between microbial abundances and shoot biomass revealed that the most abundant Gigaspora sp. and Sphingomonas sp. were the most promotive fungal and bacterial OTUs, respectively. The application of these two isolates to bahiagrass solely or in combination indicated that Gigaspora sp. was more promotive than Sphingomonas sp. across the soil pH gradient, and they positively interacted to enhance biomass only in the native soil. We demonstrate that microbes cooperate to facilitate host plants to grow well in their native soils with the original pH. The sulfur (S) cycle is one of the geochemical element cycles in which microorganisms play a key driving role. The microbial function of soil S cycling in response to desert degradation, however, remains largely unknown. We used metagenomics to analyze the characteristics of microbial communities and their functional genes involved in the S cycles under natural water gradients with three typical halophytes shrubs in the Ebinur Lake basin Desert, China. Our results showed that the rhizosphere effect, water gradient, and halophyte type played a major role in shaping the S cycle. On the whole, in the rhizosphere type and low water environment, the functional genes involved in the S cycle had high abundance, and the sulfur oxidizing protein (SOX) system in Alhagi sparsifolia had a high expression level. In the S cycle network structure, as the soil water content decreased, the complexity in S gene networks increased, showing the characteristics of clustering and high connectivity. Indicates the strengthening mode in microbial interactions with the water content. Interestingly, the negative correlation of the network changed with the water content, and there was more competition among communities under the low water gradient and more cooperation under the high water gradient. Through the correlation between environmental factors and the network, nitrate (NO3−) and soil available S (AS) constrained most S gene ecology networks. The key species involved in the S cycle were halophilic microorganisms. This study aimed to elucidate the role of bacteria colonising mycorrhizal hyphae in organically bound sulfur mobilisation, the dominant soil sulfur source that is not directly plant available. The effect of an intact mycorrhizal symbiosis with access to stable isotope organo-34S enriched soils encased in 35 µm mesh cores was tested in microcosms with Agrostis stolonifera and Plantago lanceolata. Hyphae and associated soil were sampled from static mesh cores with mycorrhizal ingrowth and rotating mesh cores that exclude mycorrhizal ingrowth as well as corresponding rhizosphere soil, while plant shoots were analysed for 34S uptake. Static cores increased uptake of 34S at early stages of plant growth when sulfur demand appeared to be high and harboured significantly larger populations of sulfonate mobilising bacteria. Bacterial and fungal communities were significantly different in the hyphospheres of static cores when compared to rotating cores, not associated with plant hosts. Shifts in bacterial and fungal communities occurred not only in rotated cores but also in the rhizosphere. Arylsulfatase activity was significantly higher in the rhizosphere when cores stayed static, while atsA and asfA gene diversity was distinct in the microcosms with static and rotating cores. This study demonstrated that AM symbioses can promote organo-S mobilization and plant uptake through interactions with hyphospheric bacteria, enabling AM fungal ingrowth into static cores creating a positive feedback-loop, detectable in the microbial rhizosphere communities. A laboratory study was undertaken to determine the response of sunflower to nano-sulfur application in comparison to conventional sulfatic fertilizer. Nano-sulfur particles were characterized using a particle size analyzer, zeta potential, UV-Spectroscopy, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. After the complete characterization, the sulfur release pattern was studied in a percolation reactor system. Thereafter, response studies were carried out using sunflower (var. KBSH 42) crop. The stable and uniform nano-sulfur particles with a medium diameter of 35–45 nm are yielded by the aqueous precipitation method. The results showed that sulfur release from the nano-sulfur has prolonged for 42 days, while the sulfur release from the ordinary sulfur fertilizer (gypsum) ceased to exist within 35 days. Nano-sulfur fertilized plants had registered significantly higher dry matter production (11–12%), seed yield (15%), and oil content (14.7%) than gypsum fertilized plants. Sulfur is a necessary nutrient for the proper functioning of living organisms, both plants and animals. However, following pro-environmental activities carried out for many years, there is now a deficit of this element in the soils of many countries. The aim of this model study was to determine the effect of the application of waste elemental sulfur and its mixtures with organic materials (cattle manure, digestate and biochar) on the availability of manganese and zinc in soils. In addition to the standard analysis of variance (ANOVA), the authors propose various methods of advanced statistical analysis, e.g., simplified linear or polynomial regression model development, multiple regression analysis, heatmap statistics and principal component analysis (PCA). The presented findings indicate significant relationships between the soil pH value, S-SO4, Zn and Mn contents, dehydrogenase activity, and experimental duration. The results of regression analysis revealed that the applied materials had a more significant influence on the zinc content than on the manganese content during the incubation period. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer affects the migration and transformation of arsenic (As) in soil and rice. We conducted pot experiments and studied the effects of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 g∙kg−1 N levels of NH4Cl, (NH4)2SO4, and NH4NO3 fertilizers on the As bioavailability in the As-contaminated inter-rhizosphere soil and As accumulation in the rice organs. The results showed that the concentration of bioavailable As in the rice rhizosphere soil was significantly negatively correlated with pH under the 0.4 g∙kg−1 N level of each fertilizer. At the same N level, while the As concentration was maturity stage > tillering stage in rice stems and leaves treated with NH4Cl and (NH4)2SO4, it was the opposite in roots. This suggests that the transfer of As from roots to stems and leaves mainly occurs in the late stage of rice growth under the condition of only NH4+-N fertilizer applying. The As concentration in rice aboveground organ (grains and stems–leaves) decreased with the increasing N application under the same N fertilizer treatment condition during the mature stage. In addition, the As concentration in rice grains treated with (NH4)2SO4 was the lowest. This result indicated that SO42− and NH4+-N had a significant synergistic inhibition on the As accumulation in rice grains. It was concluded that appropriate (NH4)2SO4 levels for As-contaminated paddy soils with high sulfur (S) contents would obtain rice grains with inorganic As concentrations below 0.2 mg·kg−1. There is limited data on Sulphur (S) contents in arable soils for appropriate fertilizer recommendations in Ghana. Five study areas in a reconnaissance survey (RS), followed by an in-depth study of two areas comprising farms of different durations of cultivation, were investigated for the current total S and sulphate contents. Basic soil properties were measured using standard laboratory procedures. Total S and sulphate contents were determined using LECO instrument dry combustion and HPLC, respectively. The results showed wide variations in total S contents from 31 to 603 mg kg−1 in the Guinea Savannah (GS) zone. The mean trend was Forest > Forest-Transition (F-S) > north Guinea Savannah (nGS) > Deciduous Forest (DF) > south Guinea Savannah (sGS) in the RS sites, with a similar trend in the main study sites. Sulphate contents ranged from 5 to 25 mg kg−1, constituting 0.8 to 37% of the total S. The mean percent trend was sGS = DF > Forest > nGS > F-S. Soil organic carbon (SOC) was the major predictor of total S along with pedogenic minerals. Total S and crystalline pedogenic minerals predicted the sulphate contents.
