Hypertension is the leading cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. However, in Japan, only 30% of patients have their blood pressure controlled under 140/90 mmHg, and nonadherence to antihypertensives is thought to be a reason for the poor control of hypertension. We therefore sought to assess the adherence to hypertension treatment and to evaluate factors influencing patients' adherence in a large, representative sample of the Japanese population. To this end, we analyzed claims data from the LIFE Study database, which includes 112 506 Japanese adults with newly diagnosed hypertension. Medication adherence was measured for a year postdiagnosis using the proportion of days covered (PDC) method. Factors associated with adherence to antihypertensives were also assessed. Among the total 112 506 hypertensive patients, the nonadherence rate (PDC ≤ 80%) for antihypertensives during the first year after initiation of the treatment was 26.2%. Younger age [31-35 years: odds ratio (OR), 0.15; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 0.12-0.19 compared with 71-74-year-old patients], male gender, monotherapy, and diuretics use [OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.82-0.91 compared with angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)] were associated with poor adherence in the present study. Cancer comorbidity (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.79-0.91 compared with no comorbidity), prescription at a hospital, and living in a medium-sized to regional city were also associated with poor adherence. Our present findings showing the current status of adherence to antihypertensive medications and its associated factors using claims data in Japan should help to improve adherence to antihypertensives and blood pressure control., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Nanobubbles of gas remain dissolved in water for longer periods than ordinary bubbles, and exhibit unique physicochemical and biological properties. As a result, nanobubble water (NBW) is finding widespread use many applications, such as cleaning in the industry and purification of lake water. The ozone NBW (O 3 -NBW), in particular, has been used in clinical dentistry; however, it has several disadvantages, including the instability of ozone, which is spontaneously converted to molecular oxygen (O 3 to O 2 ), and its broad range of antibacterial activity, which can disrupt the oral microbiota. Therefore, the use of NBW in dental medicine requires greater evaluation. Here, we examined the effects of oxygen and hypochlorite NBW (O 2 -NBW and HOCl-NBW, respectively) on the microbiota in human saliva in 16 male patients (35-75 years old; median: 53.5 years) using multiple assays, including next generation sequencing analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed no significant changes in both alpha-diversity and beta-diversity. Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) revealed two subclusters in both unweighted and weighted UniFrac distances. Overall, the results revealed that HOCl-NBW exposure of saliva may lead to inhibition or delay in oral biofilm formation while maintaining the balance of the oral microbiome. The influenza virus has been known as a representative infectious virus that harms human health from the past to the present day. We have promoted the development of a novel adsorbent capable of adsorbing influenza viruses in the form of aerosols in the air. In this study, to develop a material to adsorb the influenza virus, a functional group was introduced into a microfiber nonwoven fabric (MNWF) manufactured through radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP), and sialic acid was immobilized to mimic the sugar chain cluster effect. The functional group was used by coupling disodium iminodiacetate monohydrate (IDA) and 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), and N -acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) was selected for sialic acid. IDA-EDC was introduced into GMA MNWF with an average molar conversion of 47%. For NANA MNWF with a degree of grafting ( dg ) of 87% introduced with sialic acid, 118.2 of 200 µg of aerosolized lectin was adsorbed, confirming that the maximum adsorption amount was 59.1%. In NANA MNWF of 100% or more dg , a tendency to decrease the amount of lectin adsorption was observed compared to NANA MNWF of 80-100% dg .
