Abstract

This Special Issue celebrates the 50th anniversary of Review of International Studies. Since 1975, the Review has published over 200 issues and over 1300 articles. The journal has played a key role in shaping the discipline of International Relations (IR), leading, or critically intervening in, key debates. To celebrate 50 years of Review of International Studies , we have curated a Special Issue examining the challenges facing global politics for the next 50 years. IR has regularly turned its attention backwards towards its historical origins. Instead, we look to the future. In this Introduction, we start by outlining four traditions of future-oriented thinking: positivist, realist prediction; planning, forecasting, and scenario-building; utopian dreams of an ideal political future; and prefigurative thinking in activist politics. From these traditions, we learn that thinking about the future is always thinking about the present. We then outline four themes in the Special Issue articles: How do we think about the future at all? How do we think about imperial pasts and the ongoing questions of colonization and racialization in the present? How will technological change mediate and generates geopolitical change? How are socioecological crises, and in particular climate change, increasingly shaping how we think about the future of global politics? Overall, these provide us with a diverse, stimulating, and thought-provoking set of essays about the future of global politics, as both discipline and set of empirical problems. Abstract

BACKGROUND: With new technologies, health data can be collected in a variety of different clinical, research, and public health contexts, and then can be used for a range of new purposes. Establishing the public's views about digital health data sharing is essential for policy makers to develop effective harmonization initiatives for digital health data governance at the European level. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated public preferences for digital health data sharing. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment survey was administered to a sample of European residents in 12 European countries (Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) from August 2020 to August 2021. Respondents answered whether hypothetical situations of data sharing were acceptable for them. Each hypothetical scenario was defined by 5 attributes ("data collector," "data user," "reason for data use," "information on data sharing and consent," and "availability of review process"), which had 3 to 4 attribute levels each. A latent class model was run across the whole data set and separately for different European regions (Northern, Central, and Southern Europe). Attribute relative importance was calculated for each latent class's pooled and regional data sets. RESULTS: A total of 5015 completed surveys were analyzed. In general, the most important attribute for respondents was the availability of information and consent during health data sharing. In the latent class model, 4 classes of preference patterns were identified. While respondents in 2 classes strongly expressed their preferences for data sharing with opposing positions, respondents in the other 2 classes preferred not to share their data, but attribute levels of the situation could have had an impact on their preferences. Abstract

The application of multiple omics technologies in biomedical cohorts has the potential to reveal patient-level disease characteristics and individualized response to treatment. However, the scale and heterogeneous nature of multi-modal data makes integration and inference a non-trivial task. We developed a deep-learning-based framework, multi-omics variational autoencoders (MOVE), to integrate such data and applied it to a cohort of 789 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes with deep multi-omics phenotyping from the DIRECT consortium. Using in silico perturbations, we identified drug–omics associations across the multi-modal datasets for the 20 most prevalent drugs given to people with type 2 diabetes with substantially higher sensitivity than univariate statistical tests. From these, we among others, identified novel associations between metformin and the gut microbiota as well as opposite molecular responses for the two statins, simvastatin and atorvastatin. Abstract

We evaluate the shared genetic regulation of mRNA molecules, proteins and metabolites derived from whole blood from 3029 human donors. We find abundant allelic heterogeneity, where multiple variants regulate a particular molecular phenotype, and pleiotropy, where a single variant associates with multiple molecular phenotypes over multiple genomic regions. The highest proportion of share genetic regulation is detected between gene expression and proteins (66.6%), with a further median shared genetic associations across 49 different tissues of 78.3% and 62.4% between plasma proteins and gene expression. We represent the genetic and molecular associations in networks including 2828 known GWAS variants, showing that GWAS variants are more often connected to gene expression in trans than other molecular phenotypes in the network. Our work provides a roadmap to understanding molecular networks and deriving the underlying mechanism of action of GWAS variants using different molecular phenotypes in an accessible tissue.

In this review paper, an emphasis is made to focus on the history, source, structure, mode of action, and application of Nattokinase. The review reveals that Nattokinase can act as a potent thrombolytic agent as compared to other agents which are commercially available. Studies on NK as a thrombolytic agent have also be proved it as an useful for dissolving blood clots by converting plasminogen to plasmin, which further act on fibrin clots. Nat tokinase is been isolated from Bacillus subtilis varnatto. Various studies been done on the application of NK has shown to overcome the undesirable effects caused by other tissue plasminogen activator, Streptokinase, Staphylokinaseetc and increased its area of application. Abstract

The editorial team of the Review of International Studies (RIS) has completed their four-year term, during which they received over 1,100 submissions and published more than 160 articles. They organized workshops, conference panels, and mentoring programs, aiming to push the boundaries of research on international politics. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on their work, forcing them to adapt to remote collaboration and rethink their plans for conferences and outreach. They also noticed a decrease in submissions by women, possibly due to the disproportionate impact of caregiving responsibilities. The team made efforts to increase inclusivity and representation in the journal, publishing authors from historically underrepresented regions. They are leaving RIS on the verge of its 50th volume and are planning a special issue to explore the challenges and future of international politics. Abstract

Objective. The study aimed to assess the awareness, perception, and practices regarding oral health among school-going adolescents in Ahmedabad City, Gujarat, India. Materials and methods. A total of 600 school-attending adolescents with a mean age of 14.2 ± 1.19 years were enrolled. Ten schools (five public and five private schools) were selected randomly. They were interviewed by using a face-to-face questionnaire which comprised 13 items. Out of 13 questions four questions were related to awareness, four questions were related to attitude, and five questions were related to the practice of oral health. The statistical association between the two genders, age groups, and between public and private schools was determined using the Chi-square test. Results. Most of the participants were aware of the number of permanent teeth present; however they were unaware of the number of primary teeth, and the effect of sugar and tobacco consumption on oral health. Male and private school-going students had better knowledge compared to females and government school students... A total of 73% of the participants brushed their teeth twice daily. Tooth pain was the most common reason (49.7%) for visiting a dentist. 44.7% of them visit the dentist only when needed while 23.5% visit the dentist every 6 months for regular check-ups. Conclusion. The findings of the study conclude that oral health-related awareness, perception, and practices of adolescent students were not satisfactory. Hence, there is a need for regular oral health education for adolescents, as well as their parents and school teachers, which could impart a better and long-lasting understanding of oral health awareness, which in turn will reflect better oral health-related practices.
