Abstract

Traffic prediction plays a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion which represents a critical problem globally, resulting in negative consequences such as lost hours of additional travel time and increased fuel consumption. Integrating emerging technologies into transportation systems provides opportunities for improving traffic prediction significantly and brings about new research problems. In order to lay the foundation for understanding the open research challenges in traffic prediction, this survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of traffic prediction methodologies. Specifically, we focus on the recent advances and emerging research opportunities in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based traffic prediction methods, due to their recent success and potential in traffic prediction, with an emphasis on multivariate traffic time series modeling. We first provide a list and explanation of the various data types and resources used in the literature. Next, the essential data preprocessing methods within the traffic prediction context are categorized, and the prediction methods and applications are subsequently summarized. 14. Comparison of professional competency and anxiety of nursing students trained based on two internship models: a comparative study.

Abstract

Background: Improving the professional competency of nursing students during the internship is critical. This study aimed to compare the professional competency and anxiety of nursing students trained based on two internship models. Methods: This is a two-group posttest-only quasi-experimental design study. One hundred nursing students who passed internship models A (a previous internship model) and B (an intervention with more educator support and a more planned and programmed process) were randomly enrolled in this study. Internship model groups A and B were conducted for the students in semesters 7 and 8. The outcomes assessed in both groups were "The Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses" and Spielberger "State-Trait Anxiety Inventory". T-test and MANOVA were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean scores of competency were 134.56 (SD = 43.23) and 160.19 (SD = 35.81) for the nursing students in the internship model groups A and B, respectively. The mean scores of nursing students' anxiety were 92.14 (SD = 15.36) and 80.44 (SD = 18.16) in the internship model groups A and B, respectively. MANOVA test showed a significant difference between the groups regarding professional competency (F = 10.34, p = 0.002) and anxiety (F = 11.31, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The internship model group B could improve the professional competency of nursing students to a great extent and they experienced mild anxiety; it is suggested that this intervention should be done for nursing students. Conducting more studies to evaluate the effect of this model on the nursing students' competency and anxiety after graduation and as a novice nurse is suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Explaining the Components of Resilience in Patients with Chronic Pain: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

Abstract

Background: Resilience is a psychological trait and a protective factor that plays a vital role in coping with Chronic Pain (CP). Despite its importance, research has yet to fully clarify the concept and components of resilience in patients with CP. Accordingly, the present study aims to explain the components of resilience in patients with CP. Materials and Methods: The current qualitative study used a conventional content analysis methodology. The research population included all patients with CP who were referred to clinics affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (south of Iran) from August 2021 to August 2022. Participants were selected using the purposive sampling method. In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants to collect information. Data analysis was conducted using MAXQDA 2020 software in conjunction with data collection efforts. Results: Generally, in the current study, 30 sub sub-categories, 11 sub-categories, and five main categories were extracted as components of resilience in patients with CP. The main categories of resilience against CP included the following: 1. emotional self regulation, 2. psychological flexibility, 3. self care, 4. appeal to religion--spirituality, and 5. internal resources and individual competencies. Conclusions: The present study highlights the different physical, mental, and religious-spiritual strategies that may contribute to resilience against pain. The resilience components identified in this study provide a foundation for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, to design and implement diverse pain management strategies that enhance adjustment to CP conditions. Abstract

Background: Pain is a major clinical problem across all ages with serious social and economic consequences and a great negative impact on quality of life. Brain entrainment using binaural beats is a non-pharmaceutical intervention that is claimed to have analgesic effects in acute and chronic pain. We aimed to systematically review the available randomized clinical trials on the efficacy of binaural auditory beats in reducing adults' pain perception in acute and chronic pain. A systematic search in electronic databases including Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Embase was performed. The search was completed through Google Scholar and a manual search of the reference lists of all included studies. Randomized clinical trials with full text available in English that investigated the effect of binaural auditory beats on pain perception in acute and chronic pain in adults were included. The risk of bias was assessed by the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias (RoB 2) tool. Furthermore, The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach was used to assess the quality of the evidence. Sixteen studies (three on chronic pain and thirteen on acute pain perception) fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Because of substantial heterogeneity of the studies, a meta-analysis was inappropriate and this review focused on the narrative interpretation of the results. The risk of bias in most studies was high and the quality of evidence was low to very low. Although the effects of binaural beats on pain perception seem to be influenced by the etiology of pain or medical procedures, our review identifies alpha or a combination of tones in the range of delta to alpha as a potential non-pharmacological intervention in reducing acute pain. However, drawing a conclusion regarding the efficacy of binaural beats for chronic pain requires more high-quality studies. Abstract

Objectives: There is a considerable debate regarding the possible dependence between depression and suicidal ideation treatments. The present study used a novel mediation approach in a randomized comparison of pharmacotherapy and combined therapy to explore whether depressive symptoms mediate the association between treatment and suicidal ideation and whether it depends on the treatment condition. Design: This study is a randomized, controlled, parallel group (1:1), clinical trial using a novel mediation approach for longitudinal data. Latent difference score modelling was utilized to investigate whether changes in depressive symptoms drive subsequent changes in suicide ideation. Method: Participants were 94 depressive suicidal outpatients who were assessed regarding depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation over the course of an experiment (0–2‐7 months). Direct and indirect associations between (change in) depressive symptoms and (change in) suicidal ideation were explored using Pearson's correlations and latent difference score model. Results: The results showed that depression treatment affects not only suicidal ideation directly but also its influence on suicidal ideation occurs via improvement in depressive symptoms. It was found a more significant effect of combining pharmacotherapy and PPT (in comparison with the pharmacotherapy alone) on the early and late improvements of suicidal ideation (Δ 0–2 and Δ 2–7) via the early improvement of depressive symptoms (Δ 0–2). Conclusions: The findings indicate that changes in depressive symptoms preceded changes in suicidal ideation. Our results highlighted that improving depressive symptoms could be a primary target in treating patients with depression experiencing suicidal thoughts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective. To investigate the lived experience of family caregivers of persons with tuberculosis. Methods. In this study, the method of hermeneutic phenomenology. Data were collected through online in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine family caregivers of TB patients. The obtained data were thematically analyzed to explain the concept of home care for TB patients through van Manen's 6-step methodology. Results. After the thematic analysis, three main themes of caregivers'; mental distresses, quality care stasis, and facilitated care were obtained from 944 primary codes and 11 categories. Conclusion. Family caregivers of these patients suffer from mental distress. This issue affects the quality and ease of caregiving for these patients. Therefore, policymakers of this area should pay attention to the family caregivers of these patients and attempt to provide support; they should try to improve their quality of life., Objetivo. Investigar a experiência vivida por cuidadores familiares de pessoas com tuberculose.Métodos. Neste estudo foi utilizado o método da fenomenologia hermenêutica. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas online com nove cuidadores familiares de pacientes com tuberculose. Os dados obtidos foram analisados tematicamente para explicar o conceito de atenção domiciliar aos pacientes com TB utilizando a metodologia de 6 etapas de van Manen. Resultado S. Após a análise temática, três temas principais – sofrimento mental dos cuidadores, estagnação do cuidado de qualidade e facilitação do cuidado – foram derivados de 944 códigos primários e 11 categorias. Conclusão. Os cuidadores familiares desses pacientes sofrem de sofrimento psíquico. Essa questão afeta a qualidade e a facilidade com que os cuidados são prestados a esses pacientes. Portanto, os responsáveis pela política de saúde devem estar atentos aos cuidadores familiares desses pacientes para dar-lhes mais suporte, o que resultará em uma melhora em sua qualidade de vida., Objetivo. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron temáticamente para explicar el concepto de atención domiciliaria a los pacientes con TB mediante la metodología de 6 pasos de van Manen. Resultados. Tras el análisis temático, se obtuvieron tres temas principales: angustia mental de los cuidadores, estancamiento de la atención de calidad y facilitación de la atención, a partir de 944 códigos primarios y 11 categorías. Conclusión.Los cuidadores familiares de estos pacientes sufren de distrés sicológico. Este problema afecta la calidad y la facilidad con que se brinda el cuidado. Por lo tanto, los responsables de la política en salud deben prestar atención a los cuidadores familiares de estos pacientes para proporcionarles más apoyo, lo que redundará en una mejoría de su calidad de vida.

35. A National Survey of the Prevalence of Chronic Pain in Nursing Students and the Associated Factors

Abstract

Objective. To examine the prevalence of chronic pain and the associated factors among nursing students. Methods. This study is a descriptive, cross-sectional. The subjects were 1684 nursing students who were selected from the universities of medical sciences in Iran via cluster sampling in 2019. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire: a demographic characteristics survey, characteristics of chronic pain, and a pain scale. Results. The majority of the students were female (62.1%) and single (87%).The mean age of the participants was 22.4±2.96 years. The results of data analysis showed that 30.2% of the students suffered from chronic pain. The areas which were most affected by pain were: head (31.24%), abdomen (11.98%), and the back (9.23%). 56.4% of the nursing students declared the origin of their pain to be unknown, 22.7% attributed their pain to migraine, and 6.48% reported spinal disorders to be the cause of their pain. There was a significant relationship between the students’ chronic pain and the variables of age (higher in the 29-and-above age group), marital status (higher in married subjects), and education (higher in postgraduates). Conclusion. A relatively large number of nursing students suffer from chronic pains. Nursing schools should contribute to improving students' knowledge of chronic pain prevention and management., Objetivo. Estimar a prevalência da dor crónica e seus fatores associados entre os estudantes de enfermagem. Métodos. Estudo descritivo de corte transversal. Os participantes foram 1684 estudantes de enfermagem (1496 de graduação e 188 de Mestrado) das universidades de ciências médicas no Irã que foram selecionados através de uma amostragem por conglomerados. Os dados se recolheram mediante um questionário dividido em três partes: uma enquete de características demográficas, características da dor crónica e uma escala de dor.Resultados. A maioria dos estudantes foram do sexo feminino (62.1%) e solteiros (87%). A idade média dos participantes foi de 22.4±2.9 anos. Os resultados da análise dos dados mostraram que 30.2% dos estudantes sofriam dor crónica. As zonas mais afetadas pela dor foram: a cabeça (31.24%), o abdômen (11.98%) e as costas (9.23%). A origem da dor foi mais frequentemente atribuída à enxaqueca (22.7%) e aos transtornos da coluna vertebral (6.5%). Um 56.4% dos estudantes de enfermagem declararam desconhecer a origem da sua dor. Houve uma relação significativa entre a dor crónica dos estudantes e as variáveis: idade (maior no grupo de 29 anos ou mais), estado civil (maior nos casados), educação (maior nos estudantes de mestrado). Conclusão. Um número relativamente elevado de estudantes de enfermagem sofre de dores crónicas. 36. Effect of a multimedia training programme for pain management on pain intensity and depression in patients with non-specific chronic back pain

Abstract

Objective. To determine the effect of multimedia training on pain intensity and depression in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods. In this randomized controlled trial study, the intervention group was trained about pain management consisted of communication skills, assertiveness, stress management, lifestyle enhancement skills and physical activity prepared in seven CDs using multimedia method and the control group received routine training included physician’s visits, medication prescriptions and receiving the recommendations of the physician and healthcare providers. Beck Depression Inventory and Jensen Pain Questionnaire were completed for the two groups in three stages: pre-training, post-training and 2 months thereafter. Results. The results showed that there were no significant statistical difference between two groups in terms of demographic variables indicated homogeneity of research groups. Repeated measure ANOVA showed that the mean scores of pain intensity and depression changed significantly over time in both control and intervention groups (p<0.001); however, the effect of the group was not significant (p=0.565, p=0.748, respectively). Hence, the results of time-group interaction showed that there was significant difference between the two groups in terms of pain intensity and depression (p<0.001, p=0.003, respectively). The effect size revealed that the difference between mean scores of depression before and after the intervention in the both group was high (1.04 and 1.45, respectively). Conclusion. The study results indicated that multimedia training has the potential in relieving pain intensity and depression in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain., Objetivo. Determinar o efeito do treinamento com multimídia sobre a intensidade da dor e a depressão em pacientes com lombalgia crónica. Métodos. Ensaio clínico controlado e aleatório, o grupo de intervenção recebeu educação sobre o manejo da dor consistente nuns temas (habilidades de comunicação, assertividade, manejo do estresse, habilidades para melhorar o estilo de vida e atividade física) disponíveis em sete CD mediante o método multimídia; e o grupo de controle recebeu a educação rotineira brindada durante as visitas ao médico, consistente na prescrição de medicamentos e a recepção das recomendações do médico e de outros profissionais sanitários. O Inventário de Depressão de Beck e o Questionário de Dor de Jensen se aplicaram aos dois grupos em três momentos: antes do treinamento, depois do treinamento e dois meses depois de acabar a intervenção. Resultados. O ANOVA de medidas repetidas mostrou que as pontuações médias da intensidade da dor e da depressão mudaram significativamente ao longo do tempo tanto no grupo de controle como no de intervenção (p<0.001); porém, o efeito do grupo não foi significativo (p=0.565, p=0.748, respectivamente). Por tanto, os resultados da interação tempo-grupo mostraram que se havia uma diferença significativa entre os dois grupos enquanto à intensidade da dor e a depressão (p<0.001, p=0.003, respectivamente). O tamanho do efeito revelou que a diferença entre as pontuações médias de depressão antes e depois da intervenção em ambos os grupos era alta (1.04 e 1.45, respectivamente). Conclusão. Abstract

Objective. The present study aimed to determine male nursing students’ perception of gender barriers in nursing curricula. Methods. This descriptive study was conducted on 150 B.Sc. and M.Sc. nursing students at Tabriz School of Nursing and Midwifery, Tabriz university of medical sciences, Tabriz, Iran that were selected through convenience sampling. The study data were collected using Inventory of Male Friendliness in Nursing Programs-Short (IMFNP-S). This scale has 17 items for investigating male nursing students’ perception of gender barriers in nursing curricula. Each item is a 5-point Likert-type scale scored from 0 to 4; total scale score could range from 0 to 68, higher scores representing male nursing students’ perception of less gender barriers in nursing curricula. Results. The total mean score of gender barriers was 35.11+6.15. The most important barriers included different requirements/limitations in obstetrics apprenticeship (Median=1), and need for proving oneself because of people’s expectation of nurses to be female (Median=2). On the other hand, the least important barriers were lack of important people’s support on one’s career decisions (Median=3), and lack of opportunity to work with other male nurses (Median=3). The scale score was not associated with the socio-demographic characteristics studied. Conclusion. The most male nursing students feel various gender issues in the nursing curriculum in a medium level that may negatively impact on their learning, professional performance and motivation and tendency to nursing. Furthermore, this vicious cycle can lead to lack of professional development, leaving the job and burnout. Thus, creating a gender-neutral environment can make nursing programs more male friendly., Objetivo.Descrever a percepção dos estudantes de enfermagem homens sobre as barreiras de gênero nos planos de estudo de enfermagem. Métodos. Este estudo descritivo se levou a cabo com a participação de 150 homens que eram estudantes de enfermagem da Escola de Enfermagem e Parteira de Tabriz, Universidade de Ciências Médicas de Tabriz, Irã, que foram selecionados mediante uma amostragem por conveniência. Os dados do estudo se recolheram utilizando o Inventory of Male Friendliness in Nursing Programs-Short (IMFNP-S). Esta escala tem 17 itens com opções de resposta tipo Likert de 5 pontos que se pontua de 0 a 4; a pontuação total da escala pode oscilar entre 0 e 68, e as pontuações maiores representam a percepção de menos barreiras de gênero. Resultados. A pontuação média total das barreiras de género foi de 35.11+6.15. As barreiras mais importantes incluíam os diferentes requisitos ou limitações na aprendizagem da obstetrícia (Média=1), e a necessidade de provar-se a si mesmo devido à expectativa das pessoas de que as enfermeiras sejam mulheres (Média=2). Por outro lado, as barreiras menos importantes foram a falta de apoio de pessoas importantes nas decisões da carreira profissional (média=3) e a falta de oportunidades para trabalhar com outros enfermeiros (média=3). A pontuação da escala não se associou com as características sociodemográficas estudadas. Conclusão. A maioria dos estudantes de enfermagem homens sentem diversas barreiras de gênero no plano de estudos de enfermagem num nível médio, que pode repercutir negativamente na sua aprendizagem, motivação e rendimento profissional, e tendência à enfermagem. Além disso, esta situação pode conduzir à falta de desenvolvimento profissional, ao abandono do trabalho e ao esgotamento. Assim pois, a criação de um entorno neutral desde o ponto de vista de gênero, pode fazer que os programas de enfermagem sejam mais favoráveis aos homens., Objetivo. 43. The effect of interactive virtual psycho-educational interventions via social networks on self-efficacy and anxiety among patients infected with COVID-19 and living in home quarantine: A randomized control trial.

Abstract

Background: Psycho-educational interventions might play a crucial role in the management of diseases. This study was conducted to determine the effect of psycho-educational interventions via social networks on self-efficacy and anxiety among Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in home quarantine. Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 72 COVID-19 patients, in Shiraz, Iran, in 2020. The patients were randomly assigned to an intervention and control group. Patients in the intervention group underwent psycho-educational interventions daily for 14 days. The data were collected using the Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (SUPPH) questionnaire and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and 2 weeks after the intervention. Results: After the intervention, the mean score of SUPPH was mean = 120.75 (16.56) and mean(SD) 111.27 (14.40) in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Moreover, after the intervention, the mean score of state and trait anxiety were 34.69 (10.75) and 38.31 (8.44) in the intervention group, and mean(SD) 45.75 (13.01) and 43.50 (8.44) in the control group, respectively. After the intervention, a difference was observed between the groups concerning the mean score of SUPPH (t 70 = 2.58; p = 0.01), state anxiety (F 1 = 16.52; p < 0.001), and trait anxiety (t 70 = −2.49; p = 0.01). Conclusions: Considering the effectiveness of psycho-educational interventions in self-efficacy and anxiety, healthcare providers are recommended to use these interventions in COVID-19 patients. Abstract

Objectives. Most research studying the relationship between job stress and chronic pain has relied on physiological responses. This study aims to determine psychosocial mechanisms by which job stress can influence chronic pain in workers. Methods. This cross-sectional study was carried out among 793 workers in gas and oil platforms or petroleum refinery plants in southern Iran. Structural equation modelling was applied to evaluate direct, indirect and total effects of job stress on chronic pain in the presence of mediating variables (work–family conflict and depression). Results. Job stress (B = 0.024, β = 0.477), 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.016, 0.032], work–family conflict (B = 0.031, β = 0.446), 95% CI [0.023, 0.038], depression (B = 0.046, β = 0.224), 95% CI [0.028, 0.064] and work experience (B = 0.083, β = 0.380), 95% CI [0.065, 0.101] had significant direct effects on chronic pain. Indirect paths from job stress to chronic pain via depression (B = 0.002, β = 0.042), 95% CI [0.001, 0.003] and work–family conflict (B = 0.004, β = 0.085), 95% CI [0.003, 0.006] were significant. Conclusions. Given that depression and work–family conflict mediate the effects of job stress on pain, stress management programmes for workers might include various strategies to reduce negative thoughts as well as cognitive biases and minimize role conflicts between work and private life. Abstract

The present study was examined the effect of a combined treatment (sertraline and positive psychotherapy) compared to the pharmacotherapy (sertraline) alone on hopelessness and suicidal ideation of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Patients were 100 depressed outpatients treated with either combined treatment (n = 50) or pharmacotherapy alone (n = 50). Measures were taken multiple times over the course of treatment (at baseline, 2, and 7 months later). The results of the repeated measures ANOVAs showed that pharmacotherapy alone and combined treatment had beneficial effects with a superior effect of combined treatment on hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Our results suggest that pharmacotherapy alone may not be sufficient to protect patients with MDD from suicidal ideation, especially in the early phase of the treatment with sertraline. The present results suggest that combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy could be an effective option for treating major depressive disorder in both the short and long term. Abstract

Objectives Feeling of loneliness and aggression are common problems in the elderly living in nursing homes that can have serious psychological and physical consequences for them. Due to the growing number of the elderly population, it is essential to use practical strategies for reducing their isolation and aggression. This study aims to assess the effect of combining adapted physical and artistic activities on feeling of loneliness and aggression in the elderly living in nursing homes. Methods & Materials In this quasi-experimental study, 68 older residents of a nursing home in Shiraz, Iran with feeling of loneliness and aggression and without acute psychological and physical problems participated, who were selected using a convenience sampling method and then assigned into two groups of control and intervention by block randomization method. The control group received routine care, while the intervention group participated in 16 sessions of adapted physical and artistic activities. Data were collected using the UCLA Loneliness Scale and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire before and immediately after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive (Mean±SD, and frequency) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon test) in SPSS software, version 22. Results The participants' mean age was 70.93±7.99 years in total, and 69.1% were women. The scores of loneliness and aggression significantly reduced after the intervention in the intervention group (P<0.001). The scores of loneliness (P<0.001) and aggression (P=0.001) in the intervention group were significantly lower than in the control group. Conclusion Feeling of loneliness and the level of aggression in the elderly living in nursing homes can be reduced significantly by combining adapted physical and artistic activities. Abstract

Background: Chronic pain in adolescents is prevalent, disabling, and costly. So, providing methods to improve the multidisciplinary management of adolescents' pain is important. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of a mobile-based educational application on the severity of chronic pain in adolescents. Material and Methods: This study used a double-blind randomized parallel-group design. 192 adolescents with chronic pain were assigned to three conditions equally (Face-to-face educational program, mobile-based educational program, and Wait-list control condition). Participants in the group of mobile-based educational program completed four modules in the area of pain, stress and anger management and communication skills (1 module per week) via their mobile application. The participants completed pain intensity questionnaire at the baseline, immediately after the mobile-based educational program, and three months after the program. The data were analyzed by SPSS 22 software. Results: There were significant main effects of time on ratings of pain intensity (P<0.01). The main effects of group on ratings of pain intensity (P<0.10) and pain diagnosis on ratings of pain intensity (P<0.84) weren't significant. There were not significant interactions of group × time (P<0.09) and pain diagnosis × time (P<0.69) for pain intensity. Conclusion: Over time, pain intensity decreased, but there were no differences in pain intensity across treatment groups. It seems that adolescents with chronic pain who do not have access to pain care may benefit from remote pain management programs delivered by mobile application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The development, implementation and qualitative evaluation of smartphone-based pain management applications may provide an opportunity for more optimal management of pediatric pain. Objective: To assess a smartphone-based pain management application regarding the feasibility, adherence, participant satisfaction and effectiveness on pain intensity and quality of life in adolescents with chronic pain. Material and Methods: The study was carried out in the quantitative and qualitative stages using a mixed method approach. The quantitative stage included 128 adolescents who had chronic pain. The intervention group received a pain management program through a smartphone-based application. The adolescents were assessed regarding pain intensity and different dimensions of quality of life at three phases. The findings in the quantitative stage were explained by qualitative interviews. Results: The findings of the quantitative stage showed significant improvements in pain intensity, emotional, social and school functioning, but not in physical functioning of the adolescents. A high level of adherence (78.12%) and satisfaction (26.45±6.45) with the smartphone-based pain management program was found. Based on the qualitative interviews, adolescents' pain management strategies can be categorized in three main categories: physical management, psychological management, and interpersonal resources. Conclusion: The results confirm the positive effect of a smartphone-based pain management program on the pain intensity and different dimensions of quality of life of adolescents with chronic pain. A mobile application incorporating both the psychological and physical management of pain may be able to help adolescents with chronic pain to reduce the negative impacts of pain on their life. Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a very common problem among different age groups. Objective: The present study aimed to compare the effects of multimedia and FTF pain management education (PME) on pain intensity and pain catastrophizing (PC) among patients with chronic LBP. Material and Methods: This single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on ninety patients with chronic LBP selected from three healthcare centers affiliated to FUMS. Participants were randomly allocated to a multimedia, an FTF, and a control group. Participants in the multimedia PME group received PME through watching seven educational CDs and their counterparts in the FTF PME group received the same educations in seven weekly FTF educational sessions. Data were collected before, immediately after, and one month after the study intervention. To analyze treatment effects, MANOVA with Tukey post hoc test was performed. Effect size was reported where appropriate. Clinical outcomes (Minimal Detectable Change (MDC)) for pain intensity also reported. Results: The results indicated that the two interventions exerted significant statistical effects on decreasing the participants' pain intensity and catastrophizing compared to the control group. The findings indicated non-significant main effect of time and non-significant difference between groups for mean differences of immediately and one month after intervention for intensity and PC scores. The MDC for pain intensity also showed no significant clinical difference. Conclusion: Both multimedia and FTF PME are effective in significantly reducing pain intensity and PC among patients with chronic LBP.
