Due to rapid ocean warming at higher latitudes, northward habitat shifts of the dominant anadromous fish in the Northern Hemisphere, chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), have recently been reported. Physiological development is considered to be a trigger for habitat shifts during early life. However, the possibility of physiological adaptations to future ocean warming is not fully understood, because data on the physiological traits of juveniles, such as metabolic rate and swimming performance, are limited. Using swim tunnel respirometers, we identified the metabolic traits of different-sized chum salmon juveniles originating from the Sanriku coastal river, Japan, which is far from the northern feeding grounds. The weight gain of >2 g steeply increased the prolonged swimming performance, and the metabolic cost of swimming against the southward current in the Sanriku coast decreased with weight gain under the sea water temperature range of 8–12 °C. These findings indicate weight gain and inhabiting areas with temperatures < 13 °C might provide potential benefits for northward migration. Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is a rare complication of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, characterized by the infiltration of lymphoma cells into the peripheral nerves. A 54-year-old woman initially presented with right facial palsy without any other significant symptoms and was diagnosed with Bell's palsy. Despite initial improvement, her condition recurred, prompting further evaluation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed contrast enhancement from the tympanic segment to the surface of the masseter muscle along the right facial nerve and an adjacent mass lesion. Biopsy of the mass revealed a diagnosis of T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma. Chemotherapy resulted in complete resolution of facial palsy. Follow-up MRI confirmed the absence of contrast enhancement along the facial nerve. Facial palsy was considered to be caused by NL. This case was classified as that of primary NL because the facial palsy was the first manifestation of a hematologic malignancy. Recurrent facial palsy, which is atypical in Bell's palsy, led to further evaluation with MRI, which finally resulted in the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma. In cases of recurrent facial palsy, clinicians should consider various diagnoses, including that of NL, and advocate early imaging tests and biopsy, if possible, for accurate diagnosis and improved outcomes. Background and Aims: Multiple developments of squamous dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the upper aerodigestive tract have been explained by field cancerization phenomenon and were associated with alcohol and cigarette use. Second primary SCC development after curative treatment impairs patients' quality of life and survival; however, how these consumption and cessation affect field cancerization is still unknown., Methods: This is a multicenter cohort study including 331 patients with superficial esophageal SCC (ESCC) treated endoscopically and pooled data from 1022 healthy subjects for comparison. Physiological condition in the background esophageal mucosa was classified into 3 groups based on the number of Lugol-voiding lesions (LVLs) per endoscopic view: grade A, 0; grade B, 1-9; or grade C, ≥10 LVLs. Lifestyle surveys were conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Patients were counseled on the need for alcohol and smoking cessation by physicians and were endoscopically surveyed every 6 months., Results: LVL grades were positively associated with alcohol drinking intensity, flushing reactions, smoking, and high-temperature food and were negatively associated with eating green and yellow vegetables and fruit. Second primary ESCC and head/neck SCC were significantly more prevalent in the grade C LVL (cumulative 5-y incidences 47.1%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 38.0-57.2 and 13.3%, 95% CI = 8.1-21.5, respectively). Alcohol and smoking cessation significantly reduced the development of second primary ESCC (adjusted hazard ratios 0.47, 95% = CI 0.26-0.85 and 0.49, 95% CI = 0.26-0.91, respectively)., Conclusion: Alcohol drinking, smoking, flushing reaction, and high-temperature food were closely associated with field cancerization, and cessation of alcohol and smoking significantly reduced the risk of development of second primary cancer.
