Abstract Measurements of low‐frequency physiological signals, such as heart rate and pulse waves, play an essential role in biomedical applications for the early diagnosis of abnormal cardiovascular activities. Recent advances in flexible mechanical electronics represent a novel concept of miniaturized, wearable sensors for heart rate measurement that can be used in ambulatory environments. However, most mechanical sensors require the sensing element to be placed directly on the skin surface, which can lead to performance degradation or device damage due to significant skin deformation or external forces from skin‐object interactions. This work addresses this challenge by developing soft, stretchable mechano‐acoustic sensing platforms where all sensing components are not directly subjected to skin movement or deformation. Instead, this design allows cardiovascular pulse waves to propagate through a hollow, flexible microchannel, to vibrate the piezoresistive sensing element. Experimental studies demonstrate a complete wireless sensing system capable of detecting pulse waves and heart rates, with results consistent with those of commercially available devices. The proposed sensing concept allows for the develop of other wireless and flexible sensing systems such as a flexible air‐channel pad for detecting swallowing patterns from users’ laryngeal movements, facilitating a non‐invasive and remote platform for potential monitoring, and assessment of dysphagia.

Abstract Human skin comprises multiple hierarchical layers that perform various functions such as protection, sensing, and structural support. Developing electronic skin (E‐skin) with similar properties has broad implications in health monitoring, prosthetics, and soft robotics. While previous efforts have predominantly concentrated on sensory capabilities, this study introduces a hierarchical polymer system that not only structurally resembles the epidermis‐dermis bilayer structure of skin but also encompasses sensing functions. The system comprises a polymeric hydrogel, representing the “dermis”, and a superimposed nanoporous polymer film, forming the “epidermis”. Within the film, interconnected nanoparticles mimic the arrangement of interlocked corneocytes within the epidermis. The fabrication process employs a robust in situ interfacial precipitation polymerization of specific water‐soluble monomers that become insoluble during polymerization. This process yields a hybrid layer establishing a durable interface between the film and hydrogel. Beyond the structural mimicry, this hierarchical structure offers functionalities resembling human skin, which includes (1) water loss protection of hydrogel by tailoring the hydrophobicity of the upper polymer film; (2) tactile sensing capability via self‐powered triboelectric nanogenerators; (3) built‐in gold nanowire‐based resistive sensor toward temperature and pressure sensing. This hierarchical polymeric approach represents a potent strategy to replicate both the structure and functions of human skin in synthetic designs.

Abstract Electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers have been widely used in the fabrication of flexible piezoelectric sensors and nanogenerators, due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, their relatively low piezoelectricity is still a critical issue. Herein, a new and effective route to enhance the piezoelectricity of PVDF nanofiber mats by electrospraying zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles between layers of PVDF nanofibers is demonstrated. As compared to the conventional way of dispersing ZnO nanoparticles into PVDF solution for electrospinning nanofiber mats, this approach results in multilayered PVDF+ZnO nanofiber mats with significantly increased piezoelectricity. For example, 6.2 times higher output is achieved when 100% of ZnO (relative to PVDF quantity) is electrosprayed between PVDF nanofibers. Moreover, this new method enables higher loading of ZnO without having processing challenges and the maximum peak voltage of ≈3 V is achieved, when ZnO content increases up to 150%. Additionally, it is shown that the samples with equal amount of material but consisting of different number of layers have no significant difference. This work demonstrates that the proposed multilayer design provides an alternative strategy to enhance the piezoelectricity of PVDF nanofibers, which can be readily scaled up for mass production.

Engineering artificial mechanosensory hair cells offers a promising avenue for developing diverse biosensors spanning applications from biomedicine to underwater sensing. Unfortunately, current artificial sensory hair cells do not have the ability to simultaneously achieve ultrahigh sensitivity with low-frequency threshold detection (e.g., 0.1 Hz). This work aimed to solve this gap by developing an artificial sensory hair cell inspired by the vestibular sensory apparatus, which has such functional capabilities. For device characterization and response testing, the sensory unit was inserted in a 3D printed lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) mimicking the environment of the labyrinth. The sensor was fabricated based on platinum (Pt) thin film which was reinforced by carbon nanofibers (CNFs). A Pi-shaped hair cell sensor was created as the sensing element which was tested under various conditions of simulated head motion. Results reveal the hair cell sensor displayed markedly higher sensitivity compared to other reported artificial hair cell sensors (e.g., 21.47 mV Hz−1 at 60°) and low frequency detection capability, 0.1 Hz < f < 1.5 Hz. Moreover, like the LSCC hair cells in biology, the fabricated sensor was most sensitive in a given plane of rotational motion, demonstrating features of directional sensitivity.

Abstract In recent years, wearable sensors and energy harvesters have shown great potential for a wide range of applications in personalized healthcare, robotics, and human–machine interfaces. Among different types of materials used in wearable electronics, piezoelectric materials have gained enormous attention due to their exclusive ability to harvest energy from ambient sources. Piezoelectric materials can be utilized as sensing elements in wearable sensors while harvesting biomechanical energy. Electrospun piezoelectric polymer nanofibers are extensively investigated due to their high flexibility, ease of processing, biocompatibility, and higher piezoelectric property (in contrast to their corresponding cast films). However, as compared to piezoceramic materials, they mostly exhibit relatively lower piezoelectric coefficients. Therefore, considerable efforts have been devoted to improving the piezoelectricity of electrospun polymer nanofibers recently, resulting in significant advances. This review presents a broad overview of these advances including new material, structure designs as well as new strategies to enhance piezoelectricity of electrospun polymer nanofibers. The challenges in achieving high mechanical performance as well as high piezoelectricity are particularly discussed. The main motivation of this review is to examine these challenges and highlight effective approaches to achieving high‐performance piezoelectric sensors and energy harvesters for wearable technologies.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has been widely used as the elastic polymer substrate to be combined with conductive nanomaterials to develop stretchable strain sensors for a variety of applications such as health monitoring, smart robotics, and e-skins. However, little research has been reported on the effects of deposition methods and the form of TPU on their sensing performance. This study intends to design and fabricate a durable, stretchable sensor based on composites of thermoplastic polyurethane and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by systematically investigating the influences of TPU substrates (i.e., either electrospun nanofibers or solid thin film) and spray coating methods (i.e., either air-spray or electro-spray). It is found that the sensors with electro-sprayed CNFs conductive sensing layers generally show a higher sensitivity, while the influence of the substrate is not significant and there is no clear and consistent trend. The sensor composed of a TPU solid thin film with electro-sprayed CNFs exhibits an optimal performance with a high sensitivity (gauge factor ~28.2) in a strain range of 0–80%, a high stretchability of up to 184%, and excellent durability. The potential application of these sensors in detecting body motions has been demonstrated, including finger and wrist-joint movements, by using a wooden hand.

Rapid and contactless on-demand debonding and rebonding of high-strength joints is a promising solution for quick attachment, repairs, disassembly, and recycling of structural systems. Airflow classification is the key technology for the dry separation of manufactured sand. To solve the problem of low separation accuracy and poor gradation grade, the classification process of manufactured sand under different inlet and outlet airflow velocities changes in the multi-air inlet classifier is simulated by using Barracuda based on Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics (CPFD) method. The influence of various airflow velocity in air inlets and outlet on the sand classification is analyzed. The optimal combination of airflow velocity that meets the design goals is obtained. The results show that the airflow velocity and location of the air inlet and outlet have a significant impact on medium-grained (0.15~1.18 mm) and fine-grained (0.075~0.3 mm) sand. Adjusting the airflow velocity at air inlet 2 and air outlet can most effectively change the overall sand separation effect, while 41 m/s (inlet 2) and 6 m/s (outlet) would be the best velocity combination.

Flexible piezoresistive sensors are often fabricated by depositing a conductive layer such as platinum, gold, graphene thin films, or conductive nanoparticles onto an elastic substrate. However, due to the intrinsic brittleness of the conductive materials, this method usually results in sensors with limited stretchability. Herein, we demonstrate a new technique to greatly increase the stretchability of piezoresistive strain sensors based on gold (Au) thin films by being hybridized with carbon nanofibers (CNFs). Sensors based on Au thin film fail electrically at a very small strain (~ 4.5%). In contrast, the sensors based on hybridized Au-CNFs thin film show a significantly increased failure strain up to ~ 225%. Introducing one-dimensional CNFs enables a greatly enlarged workable strain range by bridging and deflecting the microcracks formed in the Au thin film during stretching. This can effectively prevent the formation of lengthy, channel-like straight cracks that cause electrical failure under low strains. The high-performance sensors have shown great potential for use as wearable sensors for motion detection, such as detecting joint bending.
