Abstract

UNC Greensboro's vision is to be a national model for how a public research university can achieve access and excellence to transform students, the institution, and the community. With origins as the segregated Woman's College (WC), our evolution as a southern metropolitan public university reflects race, place, and intertwined historical legacies. Embedded inclusive excellence, as a heuristic, frames the intentional, synergistic, and organic processes we engage in advancing faculty diversity and a more inclusive learning environment. Specifically, borrowing a central concept from economics, we illustrate cultural, structural/institutional, and social "embeddedness" that has supported significant and positive changes at our university.

Abstract

Human behavior is a dynamic process that evolves with experience. Understanding the evolution of individual's risk propensity is critical to design public health interventions to propitiate the adoption of better biosecurity protocols and thus, prevent the transmission of an infectious disease. Using an experimental game that simulates the spread of a disease in a network of porcine farms, we measure how learning from experience affects the risk aversion of over $1000$ players. We used a fully automated approach to segment the players into 4 categories based on the temporal trends of their game plays and compare the outcomes of their overall game performance. We found that the risk tolerant group is $50\%$ more likely to incur an infection than the risk averse one. We also find that while all individuals decrease the amount of time it takes to make decisions as they become more experienced at the game, we find a group of players with constant decision strategies who rapidly decrease their time to make a decision and a second context-aware decision group that contemplates longer before decisions while presumably performing a real-time risk assessment. The behavioral strategies employed by players in this simulated setting could be used in the future as an early warning signal to identify undesirable biosecurity-related risk aversion preferences, or changes in behavior, which may allow for targeted interventions to help mitigate them., Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 7 figures

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and dysregulated myeloid cell responses are implicated in the pathophysiology and severity of COVID-19. METHODS: In this randomised, sequential, multicentre, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, adults aged 18-79 years (Part 1) or ≥70 years (Part 2) with severe COVID-19, respiratory failure and systemic inflammation (elevated C-reactive protein/ferritin) received a single intravenous infusion of otilimab 90 mg (human anti-GM-CSF monoclonal antibody) plus standard care (NCT04376684). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients alive and free of respiratory failure at Day 28. RESULTS: In Part 1 (n=806 randomised 1:1 otilimab:placebo), 71% of otilimab-treated patients were alive and free of respiratory failure at Day 28 versus 67% who received placebo; the model-adjusted difference of 5.3% was not statistically significant (95% CI -0.8-11.4%, p=0.09). A nominally significant model-adjusted difference of 19.1% (95% CI 5.2-33.1%, p=0.009) was observed in the predefined 70-79 years subgroup, but this was not confirmed in Part 2 (n=350 randomised) where the model-adjusted difference was 0.9% (95% CI -9.3-11.2%, p=0.86). Compared with placebo, otilimab resulted in lower serum concentrations of key inflammatory markers, including the putative pharmacodynamic biomarker CC chemokine ligand 17, indicative of GM-CSF pathway blockade. Adverse events were comparable between groups and consistent with severe COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients alive and free of respiratory failure at Day 28. However, despite the lack of clinical benefit, a reduction in inflammatory markers was observed with otilimab, in addition to an acceptable safety profile.

Abstract

BackgroundFifty percent of people living with dementia are undiagnosed. The electronic health record (EHR) Risk of Alzheimer's and Dementia Assessment Rule (eRADAR) was developed to identify older adults at risk of having undiagnosed dementia using routinely collected clinical data.ObjectiveTo externally validate eRADAR in two real-world healthcare systems, including examining performance over time and by race/ethnicity.DesignRetrospective cohort study PARTICIPANTS: 129,315 members of Kaiser Permanente Washington (KPWA), an integrated health system providing insurance coverage and medical care, and 13,444 primary care patients at University of California San Francisco Health (UCSF), an academic medical system, aged 65 years or older without prior EHR documentation of dementia diagnosis or medication.Main measuresPerformance of eRADAR scores, calculated annually from EHR data (including vital signs, diagnoses, medications, and utilization in the prior 2 years), for predicting EHR documentation of incident dementia diagnosis within 12 months.Key resultsA total of 7631 dementia diagnoses were observed at KPWA (11.1 per 1000 person-years) and 216 at UCSF (4.6 per 1000 person-years). The area under the curve was 0.84 (95% confidence interval: 0.84-0.85) at KPWA and 0.79 (0.76-0.82) at UCSF. Using the 90th percentile as the cut point for identifying high-risk patients, sensitivity was 54% (53-56%) at KPWA and 44% (38-51%) at UCSF. Performance was similar over time, including across the transition from International Classification of Diseases, version 9 (ICD-9) to ICD-10 codes, and across racial/ethnic groups (though small samples limited precision in some groups).ConclusionseRADAR showed strong external validity for detecting undiagnosed dementia in two health systems with different patient populations and differential availability of external healthcare data for risk calculations. In this study, eRADAR demonstrated generalizability from a research sample to real-world clinical populations, transportability across health systems, robustness to temporal changes in healthcare, and similar performance across larger racial/ethnic groups.

18. Who's Teaching the Teachers? An Exploration of Early Childhood Teacher Preparation Program Faculty's Cultural Competence, Work Burnout, and Teaching Efficacy

Abstract

Over recent decades, the demographic composition of children in the United States has rapidly shifted, culturally and linguistically. Concomitantly, there has been an increased need for early childhood education (ECE) teacher preparation programs to develop a culturally competent ECE workforce who are equipped to provide equitable learning experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Given increasing attention and calls from education researchers, policymakers, and other partners to develop a culturally competent ECE workforce, the current study sought to explore program faculty's cultural competence, specifically their culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) teaching practices, and its association with feelings of work burnout and perceived teaching efficacy -- two factors likely to be influenced by such heightening demands and to impact pre-service teachers' own teaching competencies. Using structural equation modeling, the current study examined survey responses from 117 program faculty measuring their cultural competence and its association with feelings of work burnout and teaching efficacy. Analyses indicated that, overall, program faculty with higher levels of cultural competence reported minimal feelings of work burnout and higher teaching efficacy, and vice versa. Findings from the current study provide important research and practice strategies for the field of ECE teacher preparation.

20. The hand colouring of prints and illustrations from Nuremberg in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries

Abstract

The late fifteenth and early sixteenth century was a significant transitional period for printmaking, book printing, and manuscript production. Owners bought single-sheet illuminations and hand-coloured prints on the open market, and often pasted them into printed books and manuscripts; indeed, some books and prints were even designed to incorporate user interaction. Hand colouring in both printed books and single-leaf prints was one aspect of the blurred boundaries between mechanically produced and hand-crafted media. However, the relationship between hand-coloured books and hand-coloured single-leaf prints has yet to be thoroughly investigated in art-historical and bibliographic scholarship, despite the fact that fifteenth- and sixteenth-century artists, printers, and owners drew less of a distinction between the two than we do today. Thus, this thesis addresses how the broad proliferation of hand-coloured prints in this period aligned with the emerging printed book culture in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, focusing on the socio-cultural practice of hand colouring in Nuremberg in the work of the printmakers in the circle of Albrecht Dürer. The thesis is divided into two main parts: Objects, and People. The first section, Objects, is based on evidence from surviving prints and illustrated books. The three chapters in this section discuss printer-commissioned hand colouring in illustrated books and single-leaf woodcuts, and owner-commissioned colouring in engravings, as well as deluxe and devotional illustrated books. The second section, People, examines the colourists and collectors of coloured prints, using a broad range of evidence from surviving hand-coloured impressions, archival documents, and inventories. The thesis demonstrates that coloured prints aligned with coloured books in two ways: firstly, unique colouring visually mimicked the aesthetic of illuminated manuscripts, even more than a century after the introduction of print; secondly, and most importantly, both printed illustrated books and single-leaf prints with text were routinely coloured at the behest of printers, and were subject to standardised stylistic norms. I have termed this practice 'batch colouring,' whereby printers of illustrated books and single-leaf woodcuts commissioned identical colouring of either part or the entirety of a print run before sale. Hand colouring was therefore not a later addition to a print, but an inherent part of the production of printed images. The success of batch colouring as a phenomenon has profound implications for the impact of the printing press. The mechanised production of hundreds, and in some cases thousands of identical woodcut images led to a revolution in artistic production, whereby the colouring of these illustrations developed into a uniform and formulaic mode of application in order to provide polychromatic images in an economically efficient way. This thesis therefore sheds new light on the production and reception of printed images at the intersection of book printing, printmaking, and manuscript illumination.

30. Training Future School and Clinical Psychology Leaders in Consultation for Early Childhood Education Settings

Abstract

This paper describes how training school and clinical psychology graduate students in early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) has the potential to fill gaps in the ECMHC workforce, enhance the capacity of early care and education (ECE) providers to effectively support the mental health needs of children and families, and help ECE programs provide equitable services to children and families. We first present the need for explicit ECMHC training in school and clinical psychology doctoral programs, and how didactic coursework and practica could align with national competencies for high-quality ECMHC. We then illustrate how graduate programs might aspire to greater impact by (1) shifting to promotion and prevention, systems- and organizational-based practice orientations, and equity and cultural competence principles; and (2) leveraging ECE programming to infuse ECMHC practice. We conclude with a call to action for graduate programs to address this need for mental health professionals with specialized ECMHC competencies.

31. Parental Perspectives on Education: Mexican and Mexican-American Farmworker Families with Young Children Enrolled in Migrant and Seasonal Head Start

Abstract

Migrant and Seasonal Head Start (MSHS) is a Head Start program which serves exclusively young children from the migrant farmworker community, the majority of whom are Mexican nationals and second-generation immigrants. From this early childhood context, little is known about parents' perspectives on education and the roles they take to engage in their children's education. For this inquiry, 14 in-depth interviews were conducted with migrant farmworker parents. Key findings highlight the importance of language identity and language loss in young children, cultural practices around child rearing and the roles of adults, and education for social mobility.

32. Documenting Development of Interdisciplinary Collaboration among Researchers by Visualizing Connections

Abstract

In 2015, a multidisciplinary group of academic researchers and extension personnel was awarded a US Department of Agriculture Coordinated Agricultural Project grant. The team's goal was to understand human decision-making in the context of potential livestock disease outbreaks, investigating the impediments to increased adoption of biosecurity practices by producers from multiple perspectives. Counting publications and presentations was not deemed adequate evidence of growth of interdisciplinary collaboration. Instead, we took a developmental evaluation approach, collecting data to illuminate patterns of interconnectedness across disciplinary boundaries. These data, mapped annually on a baseline framework, reveal the team moving from disciplinary groups with disparate epistemologies and interests to a cohesive interdisciplinary team involved in many unexpected and emergent projects.

33. SOGI Statements and LGBT+ Student Care in Christian Schools

Abstract

This article discusses a sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) statement widely used in Christian schools in light of its expressed commitment to treating all persons with compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. I argue that this commitment is undermined by other parts of the statement which fail to address, and even exacerbate, the harms LGBT+ students experience in schools. I suggest revisions to the SOGI statement and a range of practices that would improve LGBT+ student safety and support in Christian schools that hold a traditional view of marriage.
