Our objectives are to map the filamentary network around the Fornax-Eridanus Complex and probe the influence of the local environment on galaxy morphology. We employ the novel machine-learning tool, 1-DREAM (1-Dimensional, Recovery, Extraction, and Analysis of Manifolds) to detect and model filaments around the Fornax cluster. We then use the morphology-density relation of galaxies to examine the variation in the galaxies' morphology with respect to their distance from the central axis of the detected filaments. We detect 27 filaments that vary in length and galaxy-number density around the Fornax-Eridanus Complex. These filaments showcase a variety of environments; some filaments encompass groups/clusters, while others are only inhabited by galaxies in pristine filamentary environments. We also reveal a well-known structure -- the Fornax Wall, that passes through the Dorado group, Fornax cluster, and Eridanus supergroup. Regarding the morphology of galaxies, we find that early-type galaxies (ETGs) populate high-density filaments and high-density regions of the Fornax Wall. Furthermore, the fraction of ETGs decreases as the distance to the filament spine increases. Of the total galaxy population in filaments, ~7% are ETGs and ~24% are late-type galaxies (LTGs) located in pristine environments of filaments, while ~27% are ETGs and ~42% are LTGs in groups/clusters within filaments. This study reveals the Cosmic Web around the Fornax Cluster and asserts that filamentary environments are heterogeneous in nature. When investigating the role of the environment on galaxy morphology, it is essential to consider both, the local number-density and a galaxy's proximity to the filament spine. We explore the formation of the intragroup light (IGL) and intracluster light (ICL), representing diffuse lights within groups and clusters, since $z=1.5$. For this, we perform multi-resolution cosmological N-body simulations using the ``galaxy replacement technique" (GRT) and identify the progenitors in which the diffuse light stars existed when they fell into the groups or clusters. Our findings reveal that typical progenitors contributing to diffuse lights enter the host halo with the massive galaxies containing a stellar mass of $10 < \log M_{\rm{gal}}~[M_{\odot}]< 11$, regardless of the mass or dynamical state of the host halos at $z=0$. In cases where the host halos are dynamically unrelaxed or more massive, diffuse lights from massive progenitors with $\log M_{\rm{gal}}~[M_{\odot}]> 11$ are more prominent, with over half of them already pre-processed before entering the host halo. Additionally, we find that the main formation mechanism of diffuse lights is the stripping process of satellites, and a substantial fraction ($40-45\%$) of diffuse light stars is linked to the merger tree of the BCG. Remarkably, all trends persist for groups and clusters at higher redshifts. The fraction of diffuse lights in the host halos with a similar mass decreases as the redshift increases, but they are already substantial at $z=1.5$ ($\sim10\%$). During cluster assembly, a cluster's virialization process leaves behind signatures that can provide information on its dynamical state. However, no clear consensus yet exists on the best way to achieve this. Therefore, we attempt to derive improved recipes for classifying the dynamical state of clusters in observations using cosmological simulations. Cluster halo mass and their subhalos' mass are used to $ 10^{14}M_{\odot} h^{-1}$ and $10^{10}M_{\odot} h^{-1}$ to calculate five independent dynamical state indicators. We experiment with recipes by combining two to four indicators for detecting specific merger stages like recent and ancient mergers. These recipes are made by plotting merging clusters and a control sample of relaxed clusters in multiple indicators parameter space, and then applying a rotation matrix method to derive the best way to separate mergers from the control sample. The success of the recipe is quantified using the success rate and the overlap percentage of the merger and control histograms along the newly rotated $x$-axis. This provides us with recipes using different numbers of combined indicators and for different merger stage. Among the recipes, the stellar mass gap and center offset are the first and second most dominant of the indicators, and using more indicators improves the effectiveness of the recipe. It is currently unknown how matter behaves at the extreme densities found within the cores of neutron stars. Measurements of the neutron star equation of state probe nuclear physics that is otherwise inaccessible in a laboratory setting. Gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers encode details about this physics, allowing the equation of state to be inferred. Planned third-generation gravitational-wave observatories, having vastly improved sensitivity, are expected to provide tight constraints on the neutron star equation of state. We combine simulated observations of binary neutron star mergers by the third-generation observatories Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope to determine future constraints on the equation of state across a plausible neutron star mass range. In one year of operation, a network consisting of one Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope is expected to detect $\gtrsim 3\times 10^5$ binary neutron star mergers. By considering only the 75 loudest events, we show that such a network will be able to constrain the neutron star radius to at least $\lesssim 200$ m (90% credibility) in the mass range $1-1.97$ $M_{\odot}$ -- about ten times better than current constraints from LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA and NICER. The constraint is $\lesssim 75$ m (90% credibility) near $1.4-1.6$ $M_{\odot}$ where we assume the the binary neutron star mass distribution is peaked. The halo of the Milky Way galaxy hosts multiple dynamically coherent substructures known as stellar streams that are remnants of tidally disrupted systems such as globular clusters (GCs) and dwarf galaxies (DGs). A particular case is that of the Jhelum stream, which is known for its complex morphology. Using the available data from Gaia DR3, we extracted a region on the sky that contains Jhelum. We then applied the novel Locally Aligned Ant Technique (LAAT) on the position and proper motion space of stars belonging to the selected region to highlight the stars that are closely aligned with a local manifold in the data and the stars belonging to regions of high local density. We find that the overdensity representing the stream in proper motion space is composed of two components, and show the correspondence of these two signals to the previously reported narrow and broad spatial components of Jhelum. We made use of the radial velocity measurements provided by the $S^5$ survey to confirm, for the first time, a separation between the two components in radial velocity. We show that the narrow and broad components have velocity dispersions of $4.84^{+1.23}_{-0.79}$~km/s and $19.49^{+2.19}_{-1.84}$~km/s, and metallicity dispersions of $0.15^{+0.18}_{-0.10}$ and $0.34^{+0.13}_{-0.09}$, respectively. These measurements, and the difference in component widths, could be explained with a scenario where Jhelum is the remnant of a GC embedded within a DG that were accreted onto the Milky Way during their infall. Although the properties of Jhelum can be explained with this merger scenario, other progenitors of the narrow component remain possible such as a nuclear star cluster or a DG. To rule these possibilities out, we would need more observational data of member stars of the stream. Our analysis highlights the importance of the internal structure of streams with regards to their formation history.

Using a set of clusters in dark matter only cosmological simulations, we study the consequences of merging of clusters and groups of galaxies (with mass ratio larger than 5:1) to investigate the tidal impact of mergers on the satellite halos. We compare our results to a control sample of clusters that have had no major mergers over the same time period. Clusters that undergo major mergers are found to have a significant enhancement in destruction of their subhalos of ~10-30%, depending on how major the merger is. Those with mass ratios less than 7:1 showed no significant enhancement. The number of destroyed subhalos are measured for the cluster members that were inside the virial radius of clusters before the merger begins. This means preprocessed galaxies brought in by the merger are deliberately excluded, allowing us to clearly see the enhanced destruction purely as a result of the distorted and disturbed tidal field of the cluster during the merger. We also consider secondary parameters affecting the destruction of those satellites but find that the major mergers are the dominant factor. We study the role of star formation and stellar feedback in a galaxy being ram pressure stripped on its infall into a cluster. We use hydrodynamical wind-tunnel simulations of a massive galaxy ($M_\text{star} = 10^{11} M_\odot$) moving into a massive cluster ($M_\text{cluster} = 10^{15} M_\odot$). We have two types of simulations: with and without star formation and stellar feedback, SF and RC respectively. For each type we simulate four realisations of the same galaxy: a face-on wind, edge-on wind, $45^\circ$ angled wind, and a control galaxy not subject to ram pressure. We directly compare the stripping evolution of galaxies with and without star formation. We find that stellar feedback has no direct effect on the stripping process, i.e. there is no enhancement in stripping via a velocity kick to the interstellar medium gas. The main difference between RC and SF galaxies is due to the indirect effect of stellar feedback, which produces a smoother and more homogeneous interstellar medium. Hence, while the average gas surface density is comparable in both simulation types, the scatter is broader in the RC galaxies. As a result, at the galaxy outskirts overdense clumps survive in RC simulation, and the stripping proceeds more slowly. At the same time, in the inner disc, underdense gas in the RC holes is removed faster than the smoothly distributed gas in the SF simulation. The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) contains 90 binary coalescence candidates detected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration (LVK). We provide a re-analysis of binary black hole (BBH) events using a recently developed numerical relativity (NR) waveform surrogate model, NRSur7dq4, that includes all $\ell \leq 4$ spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes as well as the complete physical effects of precession. Properties of the remnant black holes' (BH's) mass, spin vector, and kick vector are found using an associated remnant surrogate model NRSur7dq4Remnant. Both NRSur7dq4 and NRSur7dq4Remnant models have errors comparable to numerical relativity simulations and allow for high-accuracy parameter estimates. We restrict our analysis to 47 BBH events that fall within the regime of validity of NRSur7dq4 (mass ratios greater than 1/6 and total masses greater than $60 M_{\odot}$). While for most of these events our results match the LVK analyses that were obtained using the semi-analytical models such as IMRPhenomXPHM and SEOBNRv4PHM, we find that for more than 20\% of events the NRSur7dq4 model recovers noticeably different measurements of black hole properties like the masses and spins, as well as extrinsic properties like the binary inclination and distance. For instance, GW150914_095045 exhibits noticeable differences in spin precession and spin magnitude measurements. Other notable findings include one event (GW191109_010717) that constrains the effective spin $\chi_{eff}$ to be negative at a 99.3\% credible level and two events (GW191109_010717 and GW200129_065458) with well-constrained kick velocities. We report on the serendipitous discovery of an unprecedented interaction between the radio lobe of a radio galaxy and a spiral galaxy. The discovery was made thanks to LOFAR observations at 144 MHz of the galaxy cluster Abell 160 ($z=0.04317$) provided by the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey. The new low-frequency observations revealed that one of the radio plumes of the central galaxy GIN 049 overlaps with the spiral galaxy JO36. Previous studies carried out with MUSE revealed that the warm ionized gas in the disk of JO36, traced by the H$\alpha$ emission, is severely truncated with respect to the stellar disk. We further explore this unique system by including new uGMRT observations at 675 MHz to map the spectral index. The emerging scenario is that JO36 has interacted with the radio plume in the past 200-500 Myr. The encounter resulted in a positive feedback event for JO36 in the form of a star formation rate burst of $\sim14$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. In turn, the galaxy passage left a trace in the radio-old plasma by re-shaping the old relativistic plasma via magnetic draping., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. We study how environment regulates the star formation cycle of 33 Virgo Cluster satellite galaxies on 720 parsec scales. We present the first resolved star-forming main sequence for cluster galaxies, dividing the sample based on their global HI properties and comparing to a control sample of field galaxies. HI-poor cluster galaxies have reduced star formation rate (SFR) surface densities with respect to both HI-normal cluster and field galaxies (0.5 dex), suggesting that mechanisms regulating the global HI content are responsible for quenching local star formation. We demonstrate that the observed quenching in HI-poor galaxies is caused by environmental processes such as ram pressure stripping (RPS) simultaneously reducing molecular gas surface density and star formation efficiency (SFE), compared to regions in HI-normal systems (by 0.38 and 0.22 dex, respectively). We observe systematically elevated SFRs that are driven by increased molecular gas surface densities at fixed stellar mass surface density in the outskirts of early-stage RPS galaxies, while SFE remains unchanged with respect to the field sample. We quantify how RPS and starvation affect the star formation cycle of inner and outer galaxy discs as they are processed by the cluster. We show both are effective quenching mechanisms with the key difference being that RPS acts upon the galaxy outskirts while starvation regulates the star formation cycle throughout disc, including within the truncation radius. Using a sample of $>200$ clusters, each with typically $100-200$ spectroscopically confirmed cluster members, we search for a signal of alignment between the Position Angle (PA) of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) and the distribution of cluster members on the sky about the cluster centre out to projected distances of 3~R$_{200}$. The deep spectroscopy, combined with corrections for spectroscopic incompleteness, makes our sample ideal to determine alignment signal strengths. We also use an SDSS based skeleton of the filamentary Large Scale Structure (LSS), and measure BCG alignment with the location of the LSS skeleton segments on the sky out to projected distances of 10~R$_{200}$. The alignment signal is measured using three separate statistical measures; Rao's spacing test (U), Kuiper's V parameter (V), and the Binomial probability test (P). The significance of the BCG alignment signal with both cluster members and LSS segments is extremely high (1 in a million chance or less to be drawn randomly from a uniform distribution). We investigate a wide set of parameters that may influence the strength of the alignment signal. Clusters with more elliptical-shaped BCGs show stronger alignment with both their cluster members and LSS segments. Also, selecting clusters with closely connected filaments, or using a luminosity-weighted LSS skeleton, increases the alignment signal significantly. Alignment strength decreases with increasing projected distance. We present a rapid parameter estimation framework for compact binary coalescence (CBC) signals observed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) detector network. The goal of our framework is to enable optimal source localization of binary neutron star (BNS) signals in low latency, as well as improve the overall scalability of full CBC parameter estimation analyses. Our framework is based on the reduced order quadrature (ROQ) technique, and resolves its shortcomings by utilizing multiple ROQ bases in a single parameter estimation run. We have also developed sets of compact ROQ bases for various waveform models, IMRPhenomD, IMRPhenomPv2, IMRPhenomPv2$\_$NRTidalv2, and IMRPhenomXPHM. We benchmark our framework with hundreds of simulated observations of BNS signals by the LIGO-Virgo detector network, and demonstrate that it provides accurate and unbiased estimates on BNS source location, with a median analysis time of $6$ minutes. The median searched area is reduced by around 30$\%$ compared to estimates produced by BAYESTAR: from $21.8\,\mathrm{deg^2}$ to $16.6\,\mathrm{deg^2}$. Our framework also enables detailed parameter estimation taking into account gravitational-wave higher multipole moments, the tidal deformation of colliding objects, and detector calibration errors of amplitude and phase with the time scale of hours. Our rapid parameter estimation technique has been implemented in one of the LVK parameter estimation engines, BILBY, and is being employed by the automated parameter estimation analysis of the LVK alert system., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the fraction of quenched satellite galaxies in host galaxy groups and clusters using TNG300 in the IllustrisTNG cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations. Simulations show that most satellites are quenched after they fall into their final hosts: post-processing is a more dominant mechanism of galaxy quenching than pre-processing. We find the fraction of quenched satellites at $z=0$ increases with host mass, which implies that more massive hosts have higher quenching efficiency because more massive hosts have more massive groups infalling. Furthermore, we find that hosts that have many early-infall satellites show a higher fraction of quenched satellites at $z=0$ than those having many late-infall satellites, which results in a scatter of the quenched fraction of satellites in a given mass range of hosts at $z=0$. We analyze cold-gas distributions in Virgo cluster galaxies using resolved CO(2-1) (tracing molecular hydrogen, H2) and HI observations from the Virgo Environment Traced In CO (VERTICO) and the VLA Imaging of Virgo in Atomic Gas (VIVA) surveys. From a theoretical perspective, it is expected that environmental processes in clusters will have a stronger influence on diffuse atomic gas compared to the relatively dense molecular gas component, and that these environmental perturbations can compress the cold interstellar medium in cluster galaxies leading to elevated star formation. In this work we observationally test these predictions for star-forming satellite galaxies within the Virgo cluster. We divide our Virgo galaxy sample into HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated classes and show, unsurprisingly, that the HI-tailed galaxies have the largest quantitative HI asymmetries. We also compare to a control sample of non-cluster galaxies and find that Virgo galaxies, on average, have HI asymmetries that are 40 +/- 10 per cent larger than the control. There is less separation between control, HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated galaxies in terms of H2 asymmetries, and on average, Virgo galaxies have H2 asymmetries that are only marginally (20 +/- 10 per cent) larger than the control sample. We find a weak correlation between HI and H2 asymmetries over our entire sample, but a stronger correlation for those specific galaxies being strongly impacted by environmental perturbations. Finally, we divide the discs of the HI-tailed Virgo galaxies into a leading half and trailing half according to the observed tail direction. We find evidence for excess molecular gas mass on the leading halves of the disc. Ram pressure stripping of satellite galaxies is thought to be a ubiquitous process in galaxy clusters, and a growing number of observations reveal satellites at different stages of stripping. However, in order to determine the fate of any individual galaxy, we turn to predictions from either simulations or analytic models. It is not well-determined whether simulations and analytic models agree in their predictions, nor the causes of disagreement. Here we investigate ram pressure stripping in the reference EAGLE hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, and compare the results to predictions from analytic models. We track the evolution of galaxies with stellar mass $M_{*} > 10^{9} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and initial bound gas mass $M_{\mathrm{gas}} > 10^{9} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ that fall into galaxy clusters ($M_{\mathrm{200c}} > 10^{14} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) between $z = 0.27$ and $z = 0$. We divide each galaxy into its neutral gas disk and hot ionized gas halo and compare the evolution of the stripped gas fraction in the simulation to that predicted by analytic formulations for the two gas phases, as well as to a toy model that computes the motions of gas particles under the combined effects of gravity and a spatially uniform ram pressure. We find that the analytic models generally underpredict the stripping rate of neutral gas and overpredict that of ionized gas, with significant scatter between the model and simulation stripping timescales. We present an extensive catalog of 5405 early-type dwarf (dE) galaxies located in the various environments, i.e., clusters, groups and fields, of the local universe ($z$ $<$ 0.01). The dEs are selected through visual inspection of the Legacy survey's $g$-$r$-$z$ combined tri-color images. The inspected area, covering a total sky area of 7643 deg$^{2}$, encompasses two local clusters, Virgo and Fornax, 265 groups, and the regions around 586 field galaxies of $M_{K}$ $<$ $-$21 mag. The catalog aims to be one of the most extensive and publicly accessible collections of data on dE, despite its complex completeness limits that may not accurately represent its statistical completeness. The strength of the catalog lies in the morphological characteristics, including nucleated, tidal, and ultradiffuse dE. The two clusters contribute nearly half (2437 out of 5405) dEs, and the 265 groups contribute 2103 dEs. There are 864 dEs in 586 fields, i.e., ~1.47 dEs per field. Using a standard definition commonly used in literature, we identify 100 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), which take ~2% of the dE population. We find that 40% of our sample dEs harbor a central nucleus, and among the UDG population, a majority, 79%, are nonnucleated. About 1.3 of dEs suffer from ongoing tidal disturbance by nearby massive galaxies, and only 0.03% show the sign of recent dwarf-dwarf mergers. The association between dEs and their nearest bright neighbor galaxies suggests that dEs are more likely created where their neighbors are non-star-forming ones., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

Three-nucleon forces are crucial for the accurate description of nuclear systems, including dense matter probed in neutron stars. We explore nuclear Hamiltonians that reproduce two-nucleon scattering data and properties of light nuclei, but differ in the three-nucleon interactions among neutrons. While no significantly improved constraints can be obtained from current astrophysical data, we show that observations of neutron star mergers by next-generation detectors like the proposed Einstein Telescope could provide strong evidence to distinguish between these Hamiltonians.

The distribution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies on the mega-parsec scale of the Universe follows an intricate pattern now famously known as the Large-Scale Structure or the Cosmic Web. To study the environments of this network, several techniques have been developed that are able to describe its properties and the properties of groups of galaxies as a function of their environment. In this work we analyze the previously introduced framework: 1-Dimensional Recovery, Extraction, and Analysis of Manifolds (1-DREAM) on N-body cosmological simulation data of the Cosmic Web. The 1-DREAM toolbox consists of five Machine Learning methods, whose aim is the extraction and modelling of 1-dimensional structures in astronomical big data settings. We show that 1-DREAM can be used to extract structures of different density ranges within the Cosmic Web and to create probabilistic models of them. For demonstration, we construct a probabilistic model of an extracted filament and move through the structure to measure properties such as local density and velocity. We also compare our toolbox with a collection of methodologies which trace the Cosmic Web. We show that 1-DREAM is able to split the network into its various environments with results comparable to the state-of-the-art methodologies. A detailed comparison is then made with the public code DisPerSE, in which we find that 1-DREAM is robust against changes in sample size making it suitable for analyzing sparse observational data, and finding faint and diffuse manifolds in low density regions.

Galaxy evolution can be dramatically affected by the environment, especially by the dense environment of a galaxy cluster. Recent observational studies show that massive galaxies undergoing strong ram pressure stripping (RPS) also show an enhanced frequency of nuclear activity. Here, we investigate this topic using a suite of wind-tunnel hydrodynamical simulations of an individual massive $M_\text{star} = 10^{11} M_\odot$ disk galaxy with 39 pc resolution and including star formation and stellar feedback. We find that RPS increases the inflow of gas to the galaxy centre regardless of the wind impact angle. This increase is driven by the mixing of interstellar and non-rotating intracluster media at all wind angles, and by increased torque on the inner disk gas, mainly from local pressure gradients when the ICM wind has an edge-on component. In turn, the increase in pressure torques is driven by rising gradient of ram pressure. We estimate the black hole (BH) accretion using Bondi-Hoyle and torque models, and compare it with the mass flux in the central 140 pc region. We find that the torque model estimates much less accretion onto the BH of a RPS galaxy than the Bondi-Hoyle estimator. However, we argue that both models are incomplete because the commonly used torque model does not account for torques caused by the gas distribution or local pressure gradients and the Bondi-Hoyle estimator depends on the the sound speed of the hot gas, which includes the ICM in stripped galaxies, thus a new estimator would be required., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, accepted to ApJ

Satellite galaxies undergo a variety of physical processes when they are accreted by groups and clusters, often resulting in the loss of baryonic and dark matter (DM) mass. In this work, we evaluate the predictions from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation regarding the evolution of the matter content of satellites, focusing on a population that are accreted at $z>1$ and retain their identity as satellites down to $z=0$. At fixed host halo mass, the amount of DM and stellar mass stripped depends mostly on the pericentric distance, $d_{\rm peri}$, here normalised by host halo virial radius. The closest encounters result in significant loss of DM, with subhaloes retaining between 20 and a few per cent of their $z=1$ mass. At fixed $d_{\rm peri}$, DM mass stripping seems more severe in lower mass haloes. Conversely, the average satellite in higher mass haloes has its stellar mass growth halted earlier, having lost a higher fraction of stellar mass by $z=0$. We also show that mass stripping has a strong impact on the quenched fractions. The IllustrisTNG boxes are qualitatively consistent in these predictions, with quantitative differences mostly originating from the distinct subhalo mass ranges covered by the boxes. Finally, we have identified DM-deficient systems in all TNG boxes. These objects are preferentially found in massive clusters ($M_{\rm host } \gtrsim 10^{13}$ M$_\odot$), had very close encounters with their central galaxies ($d_{\rm peri}\simeq0.05\, R_{\rm vir}$), and were accreted at high redshift ($z_{\rm infall} \gtrsim 1.4$), reinforcing the notion that tidal stripping is responsible for their remarkable lack of DM., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We investigate the formation channels of the intracluster light (ICL) and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in clusters at $z=0$. For this, we perform multi-resolution cosmological N-body simulations using the "Galaxy Replacement Technique" (GRT). We study the formation channels of the ICL and BCG as a function of distance from the cluster center and the dynamical state of the clusters at $z=0$. To do this, we trace back the stars of the ICL and BCG, and identify the stellar components in which they existed when they first fell into the clusters. We find that the progenitors of the ICL and BCG in the central region of the cluster fell earlier and with a higher total mass ratio of the progenitors to the cluster compared to the outer region. This causes a negative radial gradient in the infall time and total mass ratio of the progenitors. Although stellar mass of the progenitors does not show the same radial gradient in all clusters, massive galaxies ($M_{\rm{gal}} > 10^{10}~M_{\odot}~h^{-1}$) are the dominant formation channel of the ICL and BCG for all clusters, except for our most relaxed cluster. For clusters that are dynamically more unrelaxed, we find that the progenitors of the ICL and BCG fall into their clusters more recently, and with a higher mass and mass ratio. Furthermore, we find that the diffuse material of massive galaxies and group-mass halos that is formed by pre-processing contributes significantly to the ICL in the outer region of the unrelaxed clusters., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We investigate the properties of globular clusters in a galaxy cluster, using the particle tagging method with a semi-analytical approach in a cosmological context. We assume globular clusters form from dark matter halo mergers and their metallicity is assigned based on the stellar mass of the host dark matter halos and the formation redshift of GCs. Dynamical evolution and disruption of globular clusters are considered using semi-analytical approaches, controlled by several free parameters. In this paper, we investigate how our results are changed by the choice of free parameters. We compare our fiducial results with representative observations, including the mass ratio between the globular cluster system and its host galaxy, the globular cluster occupancy, the number fraction of blue globular clusters, and the metallicity gradient with the globular cluster mass. Because we can know the positions of globular clusters with time, comparison with additional observations is possible, e.g., the median radii of the globular cluster system in individual galaxies, the mean projected density profiles of intracluster globular clusters, and metallicity and age gradients of globular clusters with a clustercentric radius. Using dark matter only N-body cosmological simulations, we measure the pericentre distance of dark matter halos on their first infall into group and cluster halos. We find that the pericentre distance (R$_{\rm{peri}}$) is an important parameter as it significantly affects the strength of tidal mass loss in dense environments, and likely other environmental mechanisms as well. We examine what determines the R$_{\rm{peri}}$ value and find that, for most infallers, the dominant parameter is V$_{\rm{\perp}}$, the tangential component of the orbital velocity as the halo enters the group/cluster halo for the first time. This means that the strength of tidal stripping acting near the cores of groups/clusters are strongly influenced by the external peculiar velocity field of the large scale structure surrounding them, which differs between clusters, and is sensitive to the mass ratio of infaller to host. We find that filament feeding also partially contributes to feeding in low V$_{\rm{\perp}}$ halos. Dynamical friction can also play a role in reducing R$_{\rm{peri}}$ but this is only significant for those few relatively massive infallers ($>$10\% of the mass of their host). A recent study conducted using CALIFA survey data (Lee et al, 2019b) has found that the orbital motions of neighbor galaxies are coherent with the spin direction of a target galaxy on scales of many Megaparsecs. We study this so called `large-scale coherence' phenomena using N-body cosmological simulations. We confirm a strong coherence signal within 1 Mpc/h of a target galaxy, reaching out to 6 Mpc/h. We divide the simulation halos into subsamples based on mass, spin, merger history and local halo number density for both target and neighbor halos. We find a clear dependency on the mass of the target halo only. Another key parameter was the local number density of both target and neighbor halos, with high density regions such as clusters and groups providing the strongest coherence signals, rather than filaments or lower density regions. However we do not find a clear dependency on halo spin or time since last major merger. The most striking result we find is that the signal can be detected up to~15Mpc/h from massive halos. We present a new approach to observationally constrain where the tails of Jellyfish (JF) galaxies in groups and clusters first appear and how long they remain visible with respect to the moment of their orbital pericenter. This is accomplished by measuring the distribution of their tail directions with respect to their host's center, and their distribution in a projected velocity-radius phase-diagram. We then model these observed distributions using a fast and flexible approach where JF tails are painted onto dark matter halos according to a simple parameterised prescription, and perform a Bayesian analysis to estimate the parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using observational mocks, and then apply it to a known observational sample of 106 JF galaxies with radio continuum tails located inside 68 hosts such as groups and clusters. We find that, typically, the radio continuum tails become visible on first infall when the galaxy reaches roughly three quarters of r$_{200}$, and the tails remain visible for a few hundred Myr after pericenter passage. Lower mass galaxies in more massive hosts tend to form visible tails further out and their tails disappear more quickly after pericenter. We argue that this indicates they are more sensitive to ram pressure stripping. To understand how well galaxies, gas and intracluster stars trace dark matter in and around galaxy clusters, we use the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and compare the spatial distribution of dark matter with those of baryonic components in clusters. To quantify the global morphology of the density distribution of each component in clusters, we fit an ellipse to the density contour of each component and derive shape parameters at different radii. We find that ellipticity of dark matter is better correlated with that of galaxy mass-weighted number density, rather than with that of galaxy number density or galaxy velocity dispersion. We thus use the galaxy mass-weighted number density map as a representative of the galaxy maps. Among three different density maps from galaxies, gas, and intracluster stars, the ellipticity of dark matter is best reproduced by that of the galaxy map over the entire radii. The 'virialized' galaxy clusters show a better correlation of spatial distribution between dark matter and other components than the 'unvirialized' clusters, suggesting that it requires some time for each component to follow the spatial distribution of dark matter after merging events. Our results demonstrate that galaxies are still good tracers of dark matter distribution even in the non-linear regime corresponding to the scales in and around galaxy clusters, being consistent with the case where galaxies trace well the matter distribution in cosmologically large scales., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

In a galaxy cluster, the relative spatial distributions of dark matter, member galaxies, gas, and intracluster light (ICL) may connote their mutual interactions over the cluster evolution. However, it is a challenging problem to provide a quantitative measure for the shape matching between two multi-dimensional scalar distributions. We present a novel methodology, named the {\em Weighted Overlap Coefficient (WOC)}, to quantify the similarity of 2-dimensional spatial distributions. We compare the WOC with a standard method known as the Modified Hausdorff Distance (MHD). We find that our method is robust, and performs well even with the existence of multiple sub-structures. We apply our methodology to search for a visible component whose spatial distribution resembled with that of dark matter. If such a component could be found to trace the dark matter distribution with high fidelity for more relaxed galaxy clusters, then the similarity of the distributions could also be used as a dynamical stage estimator of the cluster. We apply the method to six galaxy clusters at different dynamical stages simulated within the GRT simulation, which is an N-body simulation using the galaxy replacement technique. Among the various components (stellar particles, galaxies, ICL), the ICL+ brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) component most faithfully trace the dark matter distribution. Among the sample galaxy clusters, the relaxed clusters show stronger similarity in the spatial distribution of the dark matter and ICL+BCG than the dynamically young clusters. It has been well established that dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) can often exhibit a complex morphology, whereby faint spiral arms, bars, edge-on disks or clumps are embedded in their main, brighter diffuse body. In our first paper (Brought to Light I: Michea et al. 2021), we developed a new method for robustly identifying and extracting substructures in deep imaging data of dwarf ETGs in the Virgo galaxy cluster. Here we apply our method to a sample of 23 dwarf ETGs in the Fornax galaxy cluster, out of which 9 have disk-like and 14 have clump-like substructures. According to Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) data, our sample constitutes $12\%$ of all dwarf ETGs in Fornax brighter than $\text{M}_{r}=-13$ mag, and contains all cases that unequivocally exhibit substructure features. We use $g$ and $r$-band FDS images to measure the relative contribution of the substructures to the total galaxy light and to estimate their $g-r$ colors. We find that substructures typically contribute $8.7\%$ and $5.3\%$ of the total galaxy light in the $g$ and $r$ bands, respectively, within two effective radii. Disk substructures are usually found in dwarf ETGs with redder global colors, and they can be either as red as or bluer than their galaxy's diffuse component. In contrast, clump substructures are found in comparatively bluer dwarf ETGs, and they are always bluer than their galaxy's diffuse component. These results provide further evidence that dwarf ETGs can hide diverse complex substructures, with stellar populations that can greatly differ from those of the dominant diffuse light in which they are embedded., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. We model long-term variations in the scintillation of binary pulsar PSR J1603$-$7202, observed by the 64 m Parkes radio telescope (Murriyang) between 2004 and 2016. We find that the time variation in the scintillation arc curvature is well-modelled by scattering from an anisotropic thin screen of plasma between the Earth and the pulsar. Using our scintillation model, we measure the inclination angle and longitude of ascending node of the orbit, yielding a significant improvement over the constraints from pulsar timing. From our measurement of the inclination angle, we place a lower bound on the mass of J1603$-$7202's companion of $\gtrsim 0.5\,\text{M}_\odot$ assuming a pulsar mass of $\gtrsim1.2\,\text{M}_\odot$. We find that the scintillation arcs are most pronounced when the electron column density along the line of sight is increased, and that arcs are present during a known extreme scattering event. New analyses of gravitational wave events raise questions about the nature of some events. For example, LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA initially determined GW151226 to be a merger with a mass-ratio $q\approx0.5$ and effective inspiral spin $\chi_{\text{eff}}\approx 0.2$. However, recent works offer an alternative picture: GW151226 is a lower-mass-ratio event $q \approx 0.3$ with slightly higher spin $\chi_{\text{eff}}\approx 0.3$. This discrepancy has been challenging to resolve as a wide range of differences are employed for each analysis. This work introduces a ``deep follow-up'' framework to efficiently compute the posterior odds between two different peaks in parameter space. In doing so, we aim to help resolve disputes about the true nature of gravitational-wave events associated with conflicting astrophysical interpretations. Our proposal is not a replacement for standard inference techniques; instead, our method provides a diagnostic tool to understand discrepancies between conflicting results. We demonstrate this method by studying three {$q$-$\chi_{\text{eff}}$} peaks proposed for GW151226. We find the $(q\sim0.5, \chi_{\text{eff}}\sim0.2)$ interpretation is only slightly preferred over the $(q\sim0.3, \chi_{\text{eff}}\sim0.3)$ hypothesis with a posterior odds of $\sim1.7\pm0.4$, suggesting that neither of the two peaks can be ruled out. We present results from MUSE spatially-resolved spectroscopy of 21 post-starburst galaxies in the centers of 8 clusters from $z\sim0.3$ to $z\sim0.4$. We measure spatially resolved star-formation histories (SFHs), the time since quenching ($t_Q$) and the fraction of stellar mass assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr ($\mu_{1.5}$). The SFHs display a clear enhancement of star-formation prior to quenching for 16 out of 21 objects, with at least 10% (and up to $>50$%) of the stellar mass being assembled in the past 1.5 Gyr and $t_Q$ ranging from less than 100 Myrs to $\sim800$ Myrs. By mapping $t_Q$ and $\mu_{1.5}$, we analyze the quenching patterns of the galaxies. Most galaxies in our sample have quenched their star-formation from the outside-in or show a side-to-side/irregular pattern, both consistent with quenching by ram-pressure stripping. Only three objects show an inside-out quenching pattern, all of which are at the high-mass end of our sample. At least two of them currently host an active galactic nucleus. In two post-starbursts, we identify tails of ionized gas indicating that these objects had their gas stripped by ram pressure very recently. Post-starburst features are also found in the stripped regions of galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping in the same clusters, confirming the link between these classes of objects. Our results point to ram-pressure stripping as the main driver of fast quenching in these environments, with active galactic nuclei playing a role at high stellar masses., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abell 2261 (A2661) is a well-studied fossil cluster, but previous studies give contradictory results on its dynamical states, such as its X-ray central entropy and magnitude gap. To improve our understanding of its dynamical state, we conduct multi-object spectroscopic observations with Hectospec on the MMT, covering an area out to 5 virial radii from the cluster center, and get improved completeness and membership. Using this new data, we calculate multiple dynamical indicators including gaussianity, distance offset, and velocity offset. These indicators suggest that A2261 is moderately relaxed. However, Dressler-Shectman test reveals a group candidate to the south, at a projected distance that is near the virial radius, and that overlaps with an X-ray tail-like feature. One of the galaxies associated with that group would be sufficiently bright to reduce the fossil magnitude gap. This raises the possibility that A2261 could have recently transit in fossil status, if the group had previously crossed the cluster and is only now found outside. In the cluster outskirts, we see an extended feature of galaxies located on the opposite side of the cluster to the group candidate. On even larger scales, we find this feature connects, both on the sky and in velocity space, with a long (~4.4Mpc) filamentary structure in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. This could support the idea that a group was fed into the cluster through the filament, temporarily breaking the fossil status, and resulting in a minor merger that weakly disturbed the intracluster medium of the cluster., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in ApJ

We have explored the dynamical and mass evolution of halos driven by large-scale filaments using a dark matter-only cosmological simulation with the help of a phase-space analysis. Since a non-negligible number of galaxies is expected to fall into the cluster environment through large-scale filaments, tracking how halos move around large-scale filaments can provide a more comprehensive view on the evolution of cluster galaxies. Halos exhibit orbital motions around filaments, which emerge as specific trajectories in a phase space composed of halos' perpendicular distance and velocity component with respect to filaments. These phase-space trajectories can be represented by three cases according to their current states. We parameterize the trajectories with halos' initial position and velocity, maximum velocity, formation time, and time since first crossing, which are found to be correlated with each other. These correlations are explained well in the context of the large-scale structure formation. The mass evolution and dynamical properties of halos seem to be affected by the density of filaments, which can be shown from the fact that halos around denser filaments are more likely to lose their mass and be bound within large-scale filaments. Finally we reproduce the mass segregation trend around filaments found in observations. It is resulted because halos that formed earlier arrived filaments earlier, and grew efficiently there being more massive. Short gamma-ray bursts are believed to be produced by both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star-black hole (NSBH) mergers. We use current estimates for the BNS and NSBH merger rates to calculate the fraction of observable short gamma-ray bursts produced through each channel. This allows us to constrain merger rates of BNS to $\mathcal{R}_{\rm{BNS}}=384^{+431}_{-213}{\rm{Gpc}^{-3} \rm{yr}^{-1}}$ ($90\%$ credible interval), a $16\%$ decrease in the rate uncertainties from the second LIGO--Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog, GWTC-2. Assuming a top-hat emission profile with a large Lorentz factor, we constrain the average opening angle of gamma-ray burst jets produced in BNS mergers to $\approx 15^\circ$. We also measure the fraction of BNS and NSBH mergers that produce an observable short gamma-ray burst to be $0.02^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$ and $0.01 \pm 0.01$, respectively and find that $\gtrsim 40\%$ of BNS mergers launch jets (90\% confidence). We forecast constraints for future gravitational-wave detections given different modelling assumptions, including the possibility that BNS and NSBH jets are different. With $24$ BNS and $55$ NSBH observations, expected within six months of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network operating at design sensitivity, it will be possible to constrain the fraction of BNS and NSBH mergers that launch jets with $10\%$ precision. Within a year of observations, we can determine whether the jets launched in NSBH mergers have a different structure than those launched in BNS mergers and rule out whether $\gtrsim 80\%$ of binary neutron star mergers launch jets. Hydrodynamical simulations show that the ram-pressure stripping in galaxy clusters fosters a strong interaction between stripped interstellar medium (ISM) and the surrounding medium, with the possibility of intracluster medium (ICM) cooling into cold gas clouds. Exploiting the MUSE observation of three jellyfish galaxies from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) survey, we explore the gas metallicity of star-forming clumps in their gas tails. We find that the oxygen abundance of the stripped gas decreases as a function of the distance from the parent galaxy disk; the observed metallicity profiles indicate that more than 40% of the most metal-poor stripped clouds are constituted by cooled ICM, in qualitative agreement with simulations that predict mixing between the metal-rich ISM and the metal-poor ICM., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in ApJL. 9 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising environments for the assembly of merging binary black hole (BBH) systems. Interest in AGNs as nurseries for merging BBH is rising following the detection of gravitational waves from a BBH system from the purported pair-instability mass gap, most notably, GW190521. Active galactic nuclei have also been invoked to explain the formation of the high-mass-ratio system, GW190814. We draw on simulations of BBH systems in AGN to propose a phenomenological model for the distribution of black hole spins of merging binaries in AGN disks. The model incorporates distinct features that make the AGN channel potentially distinguishable from other channels, such as assembly in the field and in globular clusters. The model parameters can be mapped heuristically to the age and density of AGN disks. We estimate the extent to which different populations of mergers in AGNs can be distinguished. If most merging black holes are assembled in AGNs, future gravitational-wave observations may provide insights into the dynamics of AGN disks., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Ram-pressure stripping by the intracluster medium (ICM) is one of the most advocated mechanisms that affect the properties of cluster galaxies. A recent study based on a small sample has found that many galaxies showing strong signatures of ram-pressure stripping also possess an active galactic nucleus (AGN), suggesting a possible correlation between the two phenomena. This result has not been confirmed by a subsequent study. Building upon previous findings, here we combine MUSE observations conducted within the GASP program and a general survey of the literature to robustly measure the AGN fraction in cluster's ram pressure stripped galaxies using BPT emission line diagrams. Considering a sample of 115 ram pressure stripped galaxies with stellar masses $\geq 10^9 \, M_{\odot}$, we find an AGN fraction of $\sim27\%$. This fraction strongly depends on stellar mass: it raises to 51% when only ram-pressure stripped galaxies of masses $M_* \geq 10^{10} \, M_{\odot}$ are considered. We then investigate whether the AGN incidence is in excess in ram pressure stripped galaxies compared to non-stripped galaxies, using as comparison a sample of non-cluster galaxies observed by the survey MaNGA. Considering mass-matched samples, we find that the incidence of AGN activity is significantly higher (at a confidence level $>99.95\%$) when ram-pressure stripping is on act, supporting the hypothesis of an AGN-ram pressure connection., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, table3 and table4 available in machine-readable format. We present the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey, a new effort to map $^{12}$CO($2-1$), $^{13}$CO($2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($2-1$) in 51 Virgo Cluster galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array, part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary motivation of VERTICO is to understand the physical mechanisms that perturb molecular gas disks, and therefore star formation and galaxy evolution, in dense environments. This first paper contains an overview of VERTICO's design and sample selection, $^{12}$CO($2-1$) observations, and data reduction procedures. We characterize global $^{12}$CO($2-1$) fluxes and molecular gas masses for the 49 detected VERTICO galaxies, provide upper limits for the two non-detections, and produce resolved $^{12}$CO($2-1$) data products (median resolution $= 8^{\prime\prime} \approx 640~{\rm pc}$). Azimuthally averaged $^{12}$CO($2-1$) radial intensity profiles are presented along with derived molecular gas radii. We demonstrate the scientific power of VERTICO by comparing the molecular gas size--mass scaling relation for our galaxies with a control sample of field galaxies, highlighting the strong effect that radius definition has on this correlation. We discuss the drivers of the form and scatter in the size--mass relation and highlight areas for future work. VERTICO is an ideal resource for studying the fate of molecular gas in cluster galaxies and the physics of environment-driven processes that perturb the star formation cycle. We introduce the Galaxy Replacement Technique (GRT) that allows us to model tidal stripping of galaxies with very high-mass (m$_{\rm{star}}=5.4\times10^4$~M$_\odot$/h) and high-spatial resolution (10 pc/h), in a fully cosmological context, using an efficient and fast technique. The technique works by replacing multiple low-resolution DM halos in the base cosmological simulation with high-resolution models, including a DM halo and stellar disk. We apply the method to follow the hierarchical build-up of a cluster since redshift $\sim8$ to now, through the hierarchical accretion of galaxies, individually or in substructures such as galaxy groups. We find we can successfully reproduce the observed total stellar masses of observed clusters since redshift $\sim$1. The high resolution allows us to accurately resolve the tidal stripping process and well describe the formation of ultra-low surface brightness features in the cluster ($\mu_{V}<32$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) such as the intracluster light (ICL), shells and tidal streams. We measure the evolution of the fraction of light in the ICL and brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) using several different methods. Precise measurements of the internal dynamics of galaxies have proven of great importance for understanding the internal dark matter distribution of galaxies. We present a novel method for measuring the line-of-sight (LOS) velocities across the face of galaxies by cross-correlation of spectral pixels (spaxels) and an iterative method of smoothing. On simulated data the method can accurately recover the input LOS velocities for different types of spectra (absorption line dominated, emission line dominated, and differing shapes of the continuum), and can handle stellar population radial gradients. Most important of all, it continues to provide reliable measurements of LOS velocities with reasonable uncertainties even when the spectra are very low signal-to-noise (approaching $\sim 1$), which is a challenge for traditional template-fitting approaches. We apply our method to data from a real MaNGA galaxy as a demonstration and find promising results with good precision. GW200115 was the second merger of a black hole and a neutron star confidently detected through gravitational waves. Inference on the signal allows for a large black hole spin misaligned with the orbital angular momentum, but shows little support for aligned spin values. We show that this is a natural consequence of measuring the parameters of a black hole -- neutron star binary with non-spinning components while assuming the priors used in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA analysis. We present a multiwavelength study of the double radio relic cluster A1240 at z=0.195. Our Subaru-based weak lensing analysis detects three mass clumps forming a ~4 Mpc filamentary structure elongated in the north-south orientation. The northern ($M_{200}=2.61_{-0.60}^{+0.51}\times10^{14} M_{\odot}$) and middle ($M_{200}=1.09_{-0.43}^{+0.34}\times10^{14} M_{\odot}$) mass clumps separated by ~1.3 Mpc are associated with A1240 and co-located with the X-ray peaks and cluster galaxy overdensities revealed by Chandra and MMT/Hectospec observations, respectively. The southern mass clump ($M_{200}=1.78_{-0.55}^{+0.44}\times10^{14} M_{\odot}$), ~1.5 Mpc to the south of the middle clump, coincides with the galaxy overdensity in A1237, the A1240 companion cluster at z=0.194. Considering the positions, orientations, and polarization fractions of the double radio relics measured by the LOFAR study, we suggest that A1240 is a post-merger binary system in the returning phase with the time-since-collision ~1.7 Gyr. With the SDSS DR16 data analysis, we also find that A1240 is embedded in the much larger-scale (~80 Mpc) filamentary structure whose orientation is in remarkable agreement with the hypothesized merger axis of A1240., Comment: Replaced with version accepted for publication in ApJ, including minor revisions after reviewer's report. 23 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

The detection of an intermediate-mass black hole population ($10^2-10^6$ $M_{\odot}$) will provide clues to their formation environments (e.g., disks of active galactic nuclei, globular clusters) and illuminate a potential pathway to produce supermassive black holes. Ground-based gravitational-wave detectors are sensitive to mergers that can form intermediate-mass black holes weighing up to $\sim 450\ M_{\odot}$. However, ground-based detector data contain numerous incoherent short duration noise transients that can mimic the gravitational-wave signals from merging intermediate-mass black holes, limiting the sensitivity of searches. Here we follow-up on binary black hole merger candidates using a ranking statistic that measures the coherence or incoherence of triggers in multiple-detector data. We use this statistic to rank candidate events, initially identified by all-sky search pipelines, with lab-frame total masses $>55\ M_{\odot}$ using data from LIGO's second observing run. Our analysis does not yield evidence for new intermediate-mass black holes. However, we find support for eight stellar-mass binary black holes not reported in the first LIGO-Virgo gravitational wave transient catalog GWTC-1, seven of which have been previously reported by other catalogs., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the effects of ram pressure on the molecular ISM in the disk of the Coma cluster galaxy NGC 4921, via high resolution CO observations. We present 6" resolution CARMA CO(1-0) observations of the full disk, and 0.4" resolution ALMA CO(2-1) observations of the leading quadrant, where ram pressure is strongest. We find evidence for compression of the dense interstellar medium (ISM) on the leading side, spatially correlated with intense star formation activity in this zone. We also detect molecular gas along kiloparsec-scale filaments of dust extending into the otherwise gas stripped zone of the galaxy, seen in HST images. We find the filaments are connected kinematically as well as spatially to the main gas ridge located downstream, consistent with cloud decoupling inhibited by magnetic binding, and inconsistent with a simulated filament formed via simple ablation. Furthermore, we find several clouds of molecular gas $\sim 1-3$ kpc beyond the main ring of CO that have velocities which are blueshifted by up to 50 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the rotation curve of the galaxy. These are some of the only clouds we detect that do not have any visible dust extinction associated with them, suggesting that they are located behind the galaxy disk midplane and are falling back towards the galaxy. Simulations have long predicted that some gas removed from the galaxy disk will fall back during ram pressure stripping.
