Abstract

As major sites of carbon burial and remineralization, continental margins are key components of the global carbon cycle. However, heterogeneous sources of organic matter (OM) and depositional environments lead to complex spatial patterns in sedimentary organic carbon (OC) content and composition. To better constrain the processes that control OM cycling, we focus on the East Asian marginal seas as a model system, where we compiled extensive data on the OC content, bulk isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C), total nitrogen, and mineral surface area of surficial sediments from previous studies and new measurements. We developed a spatial machine learning modeling framework to predict the spatial distribution of these parameters and identify regions where sediments with similar geochemical signatures drape the seafloor (i.e., "isodrapes"). We demonstrate that both provenance (44%-77%) and hydrodynamic processes (22%-53%) govern the fate of OM in this margin. Hydrodynamic processes can either promote the degradation of OM in mobile mud-belts or preserve it in stable mud-deposits. The distinct isotopic composition of OC sources from marine productivity and individual rivers regulates the age and reactivity of OM deposited on the sea-floor. The East Asian marginal seas can be separated into three main isodrapes: hydrodynamically energetic shelves with coarser-grained sediment depleted in OC, OM-enriched mud deposits, and a deep basin with fine-grained sediments and aged OC affected by long oxygen exposure times and petrogenic input from rivers. Abstract

Three sedimentary systems tracts (LST, TST, and HST) have been identified in Nha Phu Bay and the adjacent shelf, Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. These have been deposited since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and interpreted in this study via the analysis of high-resolution acoustic data and sediment cores. The lowstand systems tract (LST) comprises sandy sediments exposed at seabed on the outer shelf as sand ridges, and underlying the transgressive systems tract (TST) on the middle shelf. The LST developed under shallow-marine settings during the sea-level lowstand and early sea-level rise before 14.6 cal kyr BP. The TST comprises primarily fine-grained sediments deposited during the transgression between 14.6 and 8.0 cal kyr BP in an incised trough of the outer shelf, on the middle shelf, and in Nha Phu Bay. Erosion of the seaward portion of the TST on the middle shelf might occur during the late transgression (9.0–8.0 kyr BP). The highstand systems tract (HST) comprises sediments deposited during the sea-level highstand between 8.0 and 0.0 cal kyr BP and is distributed widely in the bay, on the inner-middle shelf, and partially on the outer shelf. A paleo-coast zone, located in 100–120 m present-day water depth, is recognized through the appearance of sand ridges and sandy sediments. The seafloor sediment distribution is mapped via four major acoustic echo types, combined with seabed sediment samples. The coarse-grained sediment distribution, subaqueous outcrops, and thin deglacial sediment thickness on the inner shelf indicate erosion-dominated processes under vigorous hydrodynamic conditions. Nha Phu Bay and the middle shelf are interpreted as the depocentres. The estimated sediment load deposited in Nha Phu Bay is 0.18 Mt./yr, accounting for 15–35% of the annual sediment discharge from the Dinh River. 11. Major controls on storm surge flooding: sea-level rise, climate or coastal landforms? Insights from the coastal sedimentary record of southern Baltic Sea

Abstract

Lowland coasts, accounting for ca. 30% of the global coastline, are significantly threatened by the climate change, related sea-level rise and enhanced storminess. However, the role of key factors controlling the frequency and extent of extreme storm surges of inundation regime are not yet fully understood. In the present research we seek for the answer what are factors governing the susceptibility of the coast to storm surge flooding: is it coastal landforms development, storminess or rising sea-level? The southern Baltic Sea coast presents an ideal target for the research on the frequency and intensity of catastrophic storm surge flooding as it is nontidal/microtidal sea, where major water level fluctuations are related to well-documented past sea-level changes and storm surge floodings. Moreover, it is located in the area highly sensitive to latitudinal shifts in North Atlantic Oscillation and changes of the westerly storm tracks. Furthermore, the southern Baltic coast has recently been identified as the region where the storm surge flooding overtopping coastal barriers is one of the highest in the world and is expected to increase in the near future together with the climate change. We documented the longest to date, high-resolution sedimentary succession from the Polish coastal wetland located at Mechelinki, Puck Bay within the Gulf of Gdańsk at the southern Baltic sea coast. There, high-resolution records of extreme storm surge flooding of inundation regime within two periods: 3.6-2.9 ka BP and from ca. 0.7 ka BP until present, are preserved. The studied wetland succession, including sedimentary archive of storm surges, has been analyzed by sedimentological (grain size, loss-on-ignition, micromorphology), geochronological (14C, 210Pb, 137Cs), geochemical (XRF), mineralogical (heavy minerals) and micropaleontological (diatoms) methods. The results indicated that both periods were characterized by high-frequency storm surge flooding in order of 1.3 – 4.2 events per century. They are correlated to widely recognized enhanced storminess periods in NW Europe and took place during both rising and fluctuating sea levels. Our results show that the storm surge driven coastal inundation frequency and extent largely depend on the development of coastal barriers (e.g., beach ridges). Thus, in the context of the future coastal storm surge hazard, the protection of existing coastal barriers should be the prime concern.The research project CatFlood is funded by National Science Centre, Poland, OPUS grant nr: 2018/29/B/ST10/00042

Abstract

As Australian cities face uncertain water futures, what insights can the history of Aboriginal and settler relationships with water yield? Residents have come to expect reliable, safe, and cheap water, but natural limits and the costs of maintaining and expanding water networks are at odds with forms and cultures of urban water use. Cities in a Sunburnt Country is the first comparative study of the provision, use, and social impact of water and water infrastructure in Australia's five largest cities. Drawing on environmental, urban, and economic history, this co-authored book challenges widely held assumptions, both in Australia and around the world, about water management, consumption, and sustainability. From the'living water'of Aboriginal cultures to the rise of networked water infrastructure, the book invites us to take a long view of how water has shaped our cities, and how urban water systems and cultures might weather a warming world.
