Simple Summary: Using GPS technology, we investigated the spatial ecology of seven male tawny owls in the heterogeneous landscape of Western Serbia during the non-breeding season. Our main goals were to measure home range and core area sizes, understand their habitat choice, and describe roost site characteristics. We caught the owl males and fitted them with lightweight transmitters, which allowed us to track their movements. We found that home ranges varied significantly, with an average size of around 2.2 km2. Males with larger body mass exhibited smaller home ranges. Also, we observed minimal overlap in space use between individuals, indicating quite strong territoriality. In terms of habitat selection, increased area of cultivated land substantially reduced the probability of tawny owl presence, while suburban, built-up areas increased it. Our findings provide a better understanding of the home range and habitat selection of tawny owls on the central Balkan Peninsula. This knowledge could have a considerable implication for land-use practices and effective conservation strategies. Describing home range and resource selection is crucial for understanding ecological needs and creating conservation programs. Still, our knowledge of spatial and behavioural ecology for most species remains limited. Here, we used satellite transmitters to investigate core and home range sizes, habitat selection, and roost characteristics in seven tawny owl males in Western Serbia during the autumn–winter period 2023. Using minimum convex polygon (MCP) and autocorrelated kernel density estimation (AKDE), we found clear variability in core area and home range sizes. Also, adult and heavier males have smaller core area and home ranges than juvenile and lightweight individuals. The Bhattacharyya coefficient showed minor home range overlap in tagged males. The final model for evaluation of habitat selection suggests that the likelihood of owl occurrence was positively correlated with the share of anthropogenic infrastructure and negatively associated with the increase in the proportion of cultivated land within the home range. However, scores of model performance metrics showed moderate predictive accuracy, implying that other unmeasured variables may dictate species presence. Our study illustrates the ecological plasticity and ability of the tawny owl to adapt to a human-modified environment while providing new information about the spatial ecology of this widespread predator in Europe. Simple Summary: The Vistula River in Central Europe is widely recognized for its high nature value and attracts attention of numerous researchers as an example of a dynamic river flowing in an extensively managed floodplain. In this study of diversity of small mammals along the Vistula valley, we analyzed the diet of tawny owl Strix aluco, a common predator considered an efficient collector of rodents and shrews. Altogether 19 species, including 12 rodents, 5 soricomorphs (shrews and relatives), 1 carnivore, and 1 bat species were recorded. High species richness of small mammals can be attributed to a mosaic of agricultural land and the remnants of riparian forest and meadows in the Vistula floodplain. Out of the four most numerous species, two (bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus and yellow-necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis) are typical forest inhabitants, and two (striped field mouse A. agrarius and common vole Microtus arvalis) are associated with urban and agricultural land. This study of small mammals indicates the important role of natural large river valleys in the maintenance of local biodiversity. The Vistula River is one of the largest European semi-natural rivers of high ecological value that functions as an ecological corridor. To assess the structure of small mammal communities along the Vistula River, an analysis of the diet of an opportunistic predator, the tawny owl Strix aluco, was used. A total of 6355 individuals of 19 species were found, including 5 soricomorph species, 12 rodents, 1 carnivore, and 1 bat species. Tawny owls most frequently caught Apodemus agrarius, Clethrionomys glareolus, Apodemus flavicollis, and Microtus arvalis. Rodents dominated small mammal communities (90%), followed by soricomorphs (8%), and the share of Chiroptera was significant (2%). Using Ward's method in cluster analysis, three clusters of sites with similar mammal communities were identified. The cluster that included 17 study sites with the dominance of agriculture habitats was inhabited by diverse mammal communities with a high number of species. In the cluster composed of three suburban forest sites, mammal communities had the lowest diversity, although the high species richness and the highest shares of the forest species (A. flavicollis, C. glareolus, and Nyctalus noctula). Mammal communities in the cluster were composed of three urban sites were dominated by A. agrarius and M. arvalis. The study indicates the high species richness of small mammals in floodplains of the Vistula River and the adjacent areas in central Poland. The floodplain offers suitable habitats for species associated with forests, water bodies, agricultural land, and developed areas. BackgroundPrior research has shown that the European peninsulas were the main sources of Strix aluco colonisation of Northern Europe during the late glacial period. However, the phylogenetic relationship and the divergence time between S. aluco from Leigong Mountain Nature Reserve, Guizhou Province, China and the Strigiformes from overseas remains unclear. The mitochondrial genome structure of birds is a covalent double-chain loop structure that is highly conserved and, thus, suitable for phylogenetic analysis. This study examined the phylogenetic relationship and divergence time of Strix using the whole mitochondrial genome of S. aluco.New informationIn this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Strix aluco, with a total length of 18,632 bp, is reported for the first time. A total of 37 genes were found, including 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes and two non-coding control regions. Certain species of Tytoninae were used as out-group and PhyloSuite software was applied to build the ML-tree and BI-tree of Strigiformes. Finally, the divergence time tree was constructed using BEAST 2.6.7 software and the age of Miosurnia diurna fossil-bearing sediments (6.0–9.5 Ma) was set as internal correction point. The common ancestor of Strix was confirmed to have diverged during the Pleistocene (2.58–0.01 Ma). The combined action of the dramatic uplift of the Qinling Mountains in the Middle Pleistocene and the climate oscillation of the Pleistocene caused Strix divergence between the northern and southern parts of mainland China. The isolation of glacial-interglacial rotation and glacier refuge was the main reason for the divergence of Strix uralensis and S. aluco from their common ancestor during this period. This study provides a reference for the evolutionary history of S. aluco.

In February 2015, there was a re-search on the number and distribution of the Tawny owl within Protected Natural Monument "Šuma Košutnjak" (Košutnjak Forest). The aim was to deter-mine the nesting population of Tawny owls, as well as the distribution of occupied territories in Košutnjak, which is surrounded by the urban part of Belgrade and under pressure from intensive car traffic. The method was calling and listening. In five evenings, the entire protected area was explored. Using this method, 7 territories of Tawny owls have been determined in the researched area.

According to Gloger's rule, animal colouration is expected to be darker in wetter and warmer climates. Such environmental clines are predicted to occur in colour polymorphic species and to be shaped by selection if colour morphs represent adaptations to different environments. We studied if the distribution of the colour polymorphic tawny owl (Strix aluco) morphs (a pheomelanic brown and a pale grey) across Europe follow the predictions of Gloger's rule and if there is a temporal change in the geographical patterns corresponding to regional variations in climate change. We used data on tawny owl museum skin specimen collections. First, we investigated long‐term spatiotemporal variation in the probability of observing the colour morphs in different climate zones. Second, we studied if the probability of observing the colour morphs was associated with general climatic conditions. Third, we studied if weather fluctuations prior to the finding year of an owl explain colour morph in each climate zone. The brown tawny owl morph was historically more common than the grey morph in every studied climate zone. Over time, the brown morph has become rarer in the temperate and Mediterranean zone, whereas it has first become rarer but then again more common in the boreal zone. Based on general climatic conditions, winter and summer temperatures were positively and negatively associated with the proportion of brown morph, respectively. Winter precipitation was negatively associated with the proportion of brown morph. The effects of 5‐year means of weather on the probability to observe a brown morph differed between climate zones, indicating region‐dependent effect of climate change and weather on tawny owl colouration. To conclude, tawny owl colouration does not explicitly follow Gloger's rule, implying a time and space‐dependent complex system shaped by many factors. Intraspecific color variation is often associated with camouflage or protection, but melanin-based color variation is also linked to behavioral and physiological aspects including boldness. In the melanin-based plumage color polymorphic tawny owl (Strix aluco), the grey morph is known to be more cryptic than the brown morph. Using 19 captive tawny owls (11 grey and 8 brown), we tested if these two color morphs that differ in camouflage tend to differently use exposed perches in a familiar environment (home aviary) and a novel environment (experimental aviary), as well as whether their response to predation risk and mobbing cues differs. The two color morphs did not differ in their exposure under known conditions (in their home aviary), but brown tawny owls were more likely to use exposed perches than grey tawny owls after release in a novel environment. Significance statement: Melanin-based coloration can be associated with several behavioral traits. However, it is still unknown how predators with genetically-based color polymorphism vary in their efficiency of active background choice and risk-prone behavior while facing predation risk or mobbing harassment. Using captive tawny owls, we investigated predators' behavior (attention towards the stimulus and use of space) while confronted to mobbing events and predation risk. Simple Summary: This article demonstrates the dampening of small mammal population dynamics and describes the numerical response of owls in Latvia. Numerical response was measured by diet, breeding performance, and trends in population change of six owl species. The responses varied among owl species, ranging from increased food niche breadth in more plastic species to reduced breeding performance and decreasing population size in more specialized species. The eagle owl seems to depend on voles in the previous autumn via the carry-over effect as measured by reduced breeding performance. Species more specialized in breeding in mature forests showed greater population declines, since mature forests are vital for owl breeding, as well as hold higher vole densities. Strong numerical and functional responses of owls to voles in cyclic environments are well known. However, there is insufficient knowledge from the boreonemoral region in particular, with depleted populations of small mammals. In this study, we describe the dynamics of the small mammal population in Latvia from 1991 to 2016 and link them to owl population characteristics. We used food niche breadth, number of fledglings, and population trends to lay out the numerical response of six owl species to dampened small mammal population cycles. We found temporarily increasing food niche breadth in tawny and Ural owls. There were no other responses in the tawny owl, whereas the breeding performance of three forest specialist species—pygmy, Tengmalm's, and Ural owls—corresponded to the vole crash years in Fennoscandia. Moreover, the populations of forest specialist owls decreased, and the change in the Ural owl population can be attributed to the depletion of small mammal populations. We found evidence of a carry-over effect in the eagle owl arising from a strong correlation of declining breeding performance with the small mammal abundance indices in the previous autumn. We conclude that dampening of the small mammal population cycles is an important covariate of the likely effects of habitat destruction that needs to be investigated further, with stronger responses in more specialized (to prey or habitat) species. Urbanization constitutes one of the most intensive and fast spreading factors explaining biodiversity loss worldwide. The extension of urban areas and landscape configurations affects the ability of raptors to exploit urban patches. The Tawny Owl Strix aluco is a forest-dwelling nocturnal species with a wide distribution range that is well-adapted to urban environments. However, it remains unknown which habitat factors explain its presence in urban-associated landscapes. Our main objective is to determine the effect of urban landscapes on the probability of occurrence of Tawny Owls along an urban-rural gradient. It is expected that Tawny Owls will be able to use urban patches that have (1) at least 30% tree cover thanks to gardens/parks for hunting but (2) they will not use those with high noise levels (i.e., highways). Our research was carried out in the municipality of Donostia-San Sebastian in the Basque Country, Northern Spain. Data were obtained from a survey conducted in 2017. The municipality was divided into 329 square cells, of which 251 were surveyed. Tawny Owls were detected in 141 cells, and we found that nocturnal noise level and scrub cover contributed most to explaining the probability of Tawny Owl occurrence; with nocturnal noise having a significant negative effect on occurrence probability, and scrub cover a positive effect, probably because the species uses open or semi-open areas to hunt (but woodland to breed). Sin embargo, siguen siendo desconocidos qué factores relacionados con el hábitat explican su presencia en ambientes urbanizados. Nuestro objetivo general es el de determinar el efecto que tienen los paisajes urbanos en la probabilidad de presencia del cárabo euroasiático a lo largo de un gradiente urbano-rural. Se espera que el cárabo sea capaz de usar los parches urbanos que tengan (1) un mínimo número de jardines/parques con árboles para cazar; y (2) un limitado nivel de ruido durante la noche (ej. autopistas). Nuestro estudio se llevó a cabo en Donostia-San Sebastián, en el País Vasco, norte de España. Los datos se obtuvieron mediante un censo realizado en 2017. At present, the intensification of urban landcover is one of the most critical threats for biodiversity. Common side-effects of urban sprawl are anthropogenic noise and artificial light at night (ALAN). Although their negative effects have often been described, little research has concerned nocturnal wildlife, especially avian predators. Here, we investigated the effect of urban and tree cover, traffic noise and ALAN on the presence of the Tawny Owl Strix aluco, a common night-active predator in Europe. We conducted playback surveys along an urban gradient in Turin (Italy) to detect species presence. Traffic noise was measured in the field, the cover of built-up and (semi-)natural areas was estimated using GIS and multiple measures of ALAN were acquired from a light pollution map. We modelled species presence as a function of each environmental predictor and we found a significant negative relationship with light pollution, which was the foremost urban stressor affecting Tawny Owl occurrence. Our findings suggest that Tawny Owls are more likely to be found in less artificially illuminated areas and that their distribution in urban areas is not only influenced by noise pollution and the availability of suitable habitat, but also the intensity of ALAN. Therefore, light pollution could be a key driver of the spatial distribution of Tawny Owls and potentially other nocturnal species in urban ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article explores Landscape configuration can influence the distribution of species across multiple spatial scales. The primary factors related to this process are connectivity, the size and position of habitat patches, and edge effects. These factors together determine the overall fragmentation of a landscape, which in turn influences species occurrence. Although some species show a negative response to fragmentation, others benefit from it.
