Objective: Analyze sex hormone's influence during Chagas disease. Methods: Male and female BALB/c mice were divided into six groups, four experimental (sham, orchiectomized, orchiectomized and supplemented with estradiol, orchiectomized supplemented with testosterone, oophorectomized, oophorectomized and supplemented with estradiol, and oophorectomized and supplemented with testosterone), and two control (healthy and intraperitoneally with T. cruzi strain NINOA infected). Clinical data were recorded daily, parasitemia was evaluated using a Neubauer chamber during the infection, and heart histopathological analysis was performed using the paraffin embedding technique. To analyze parasitemia curves and the area under the parametric curves, two-way ANOVA test was performed to correlate groups' data. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Higher mortality rates, cardiomegaly, hepatomegaly, ascites, edema, higher parasitemia levels, more amastigote nests, and more severe inflammatory infiltrate were found in higher testosterone concentration mice, whereas in higher estradiol concentration groups, paresia, prostration, edema, and necrosis were found. Conclusions: Our results showed that testosterone increased infection severity, whereas estradiol had the opposite effect. This research improves the understanding of sex hormones' infuence upon this infection to contribute with the handling of Chagas' disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a defect in adrenal steroidogenesis. The non-classical variant begins at puberty and is manifested by menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, genital hyperpigmentation, clitoral hypertrophy, accelerated growth, and elevated levels of testosterone and other androgens. Individuals with these non-classical forms of the disease are born with normal-appearing genitalia and begin clinical manifestations with the steroidogenic stimulus characteristic of adolescence. CLINICAL CASE: A 16-year-old female patient seen at the endocrinology clinic for menstrual irregularities and hirsutism, menarche at 13 years of age with menstrual irregularities (oligomenorrhea) and recession of the frontal hairline, breast and pubic hair development grade 4 on the Tanner scale for both features. The diagnosis of late-onset 21-hydroxylase blockade (non-classical form) was established. Initial treatment consisted of metformin and cyproterone, with marked relieve of hyperandrogenism and correction of menstrual irregularities. CONCLUSIONS: Late-onset non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia is due to a homozygous point mutation of the CYP21A2 gene, which in turn is due to a coding error at position 281 of the 21-hydroxylase protein, consisting of a substitution of the amino acid valine for leucine and resulting in complete inactivation of both alleles of the enzyme. As formulações prescritas e aviadas continham Ajuga turkestanica, Cyanotis vaga, Eurycoma longifolia, Lepidium meyenii, Mucuna pruriens, Tribulus terrestris, Trigonella foenum-graecum e Withania somnifera.

In 2003, the International Olympic Committee issued eligibility rules for transgender people, and since then, various sporting bodies have developed their own rules. Some federations apply rules based on self-definition of sex, while others apply rules based on the sex assigned at birth or when the sex claim was made. This article deepens the debate on the inclusion of trans people in sport through the presentation of the rugby's case study, whose international federation presented, in 2020, exclusivist rules under the argument of fair competition and protection of the physical integrity of cisgender women. A critical analysis of the foundations of these rules will be presented and the consequences of similar approaches in the sports career of trans people will be discussed. Regarding methodology, a critical document analysis on the World Rugby's rules was carried out and semi-structured interviews were conducted with people related to the sports universe in Portugal. It was observed that the elaborate rules create a hierarchy between the binary sexes and between trans people themselves, focus on limited measures of comparison such as single repetition strength, and rule out factors such as increased fat mass after transition. In the absence of the possibility of pursuing a sporting career, there was a capacity for agency and engagement in other areas that allows trans people to reach other important functions within the sports universe. Introduction. Anxiety, mood- and stress-related behaviors are regulated by sex hormones in pregnant and non-pregnant women. Very scarce information exists about the role of sex steroids in pregnant women displaying high levels of anxiety. Objective. To determine sex hormones serum levels in pregnant women exhibiting high levels of anxiety symptoms. Method. The Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS/ HAM-A) was used to assess the intensity of anxiety symptoms in third-trimester pregnant women. Two groups were included in the study, pregnant women exhibiting severe anxiety (ANX; HARS scores ≥ 25; n = 101) and healthy control subjects (CTRL; n = 40) displaying lower scores for anxiety (HARS scores ≤ 7). Estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), and testosterone (T) serum levels were measured using a standard chemiluminescent immunoassay. Bivariate and partial correlations were performed to detect significant associations between groups, clinical measures, biochemical data, and HARS scores. Results. The anxiety group (ANX) showed an increase in E2 and T serum levels (p < .001) compared to CTRL. Conversely, significantly lower P4 levels were found in the symptomatic group (p < .001) as compared to the CTRL hormone values. The P4:E2 index was significantly reduced in pregnant women with high levels of anxiety (p < .001). Negative correlations between anxiety (HARS) scores, P4 serum levels (p = .02), and P4:E2 ratio (p = .04) were found in the symptomatic group. Conversely, T serum levels displayed a positive association (p = .001) with high levels of anxiety symptoms in the same group, after adjusting our data by clinical confounders. Discussion and conclusion. Serum levels of sex-steroid hormones are altered in pregnant women exhibiting severe anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

Background: Crocodile farming aims to produce high-quality skins from captive crocodilians. Captivity usually exposes the animals to stressful conditions, resulting in increased serum corticosterone (CORT) levels that correlate negatively with those of sex hormones and reproductive success. Objective: To evaluate serum concentrations of CORT and sex hormones and their relationship in farmed Morelet's crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) during the non-breeding (NBS) and breeding (BS) seasons. Methods: The study included 59 adult crocodiles (29 females and 30 males). One blood sample was collected in NBS (n=31) and BS (n=28) from each crocodile to determine serum concentrations of CORT, estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), and testosterone (T). Crocodiles were kept in mixed-sex groups and were fed once or twice a week throughout the study. Results: In females, CORT was higher in NBS (p<0.05) but had no correlation with E2 or P4 in any season (p>0.05). In males, CORT was similar in NBS and BS (p>0.05) and had no correlation with T (p>0.5). Conclusion: The CORT levels had no effect on sex hormones. This could be explained by low CORT levels resulting from farming conditions where the animals were not exposed to severe or chronic stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Oxytocin and vasopressin share a similar chemical structure but have different functions. Both hormones are produced in different brain areas, are transported through the hypophyseal portal system, pass to the anterior hypophysis, and released to reach their target organs. These hormones also act as neuromodulators, where its receptors are found in the lateral septum, the middle amygdala, the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the brain stem. These brain structures regulate socio-sexual behaviors in vertebrates. Moreover, the oxytocinergic and the vasopressin systems are sexually different. The sexual steroids promote oxytocin release and the oxytocin receptor synthesis, as well as promoting or inhibiting vasopressin release and its receptor genetic transcription. Both neuropeptides are involved in social recognition, male-female pair bonding, aggression, and cognition. Furthermore, the disruption or malfunctioning of the oxytocin and vasopressin systems adds to the causes of some psychiatric disorders like depression, schizophrenia, autism, and borderline personality. - Abstract
The intricate relationship between sex hormones and cardiovascular health has garnered increasing attention, revealing significant implications for both disease prevention and therapeutic strategies. This literature review aims to elucidate the multifaceted roles of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in cardiovascular physiology and pathology. Estrogen is widely recognized for its protective effects on vascular function, lipid metabolism, and atherosclerosis prevention, while testosterone presents a more complex picture with both beneficial and detrimental impacts on cardiovascular risk. Progesterone, often overlooked, also plays a critical role in modulating these effects. Additionally, this review explores how sex hormones influence endothelial function, inflammatory responses, and contribute to gender differences in cardiovascular disease prevalence. The impact of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on cardiovascular health is critically examined, highlighting ongoing debates and current guidelines. Furthermore, the cardiovascular implications of gender-affirming hormone therapy in transgender individuals are discussed.

- Abstract
In 2003, the International Olympic Committee issued eligibility rules for transgender people, and since then, various sporting bodies have developed their own rules. Some federations apply rules based on self-definition of sex, while others apply rules based on the sex assigned at birth or when the sex claim was made. This article deepens the debate on the inclusion of trans people in sport through the presentation of the rugby’s case study, whose international federation presented, in 2020, exclusivist rules under the argument of fair competition and protection of the physical integrity of cisgender women. A critical analysis of the foundations of these rules will be presented and the consequences of similar approaches in the sports career of trans people will be discussed. Regarding methodology, a critical document analysis on the World Rugby’s rules was carried out and semi-structured interviews were conducted with people related to the sports universe in Portugal. It was observed that the elaborate rules create a hierarchy between the binary sexes and between trans people themselves, focus on limited measures of comparison such as single repetition strength, and rule out factors such as increased fat mass after transition. In the absence of the possibility of pursuing a sporting career, there was a capacity for agency and engagement in other areas that allows trans people to reach other important functions within the sports universe., Em 2003, o Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) emitiu regrasde elegibilidade para pessoas trans e, desde então, váriosórgãos desportivos têm vindo a elaborar as suas própriasnormas. - Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently coexists with other comorbidities, including hypogonadism. However, the association between COPD severity and hypogonadism remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate this association and compare the clinical characteristics of hypogonadal and eugonadal COPD patients., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study including men with stable COPD was performed. Hypogonadism was diagnosed based on the presence of symptoms, according to the Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males questionnaire, and a total testosterone deficit (<300ng/dL). COPD severity was classified according to the Spanish COPD guideline risk classification. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed in order to evaluate the relationship between COPD severity and hypogonadism., Results: 134 subjects were recruited. The prevalence of hypogonadism was higher in severe COPD than in mild COPD, with a prevalence ratio of 1.8 (p=0.007). An increased odds of hypogonadism was observed in severe COPD subjects (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.23-5.48, p=0.012) independent of age, body mass index, cardiovascular disease, and chronic renal failure. Hypogonadal COPD patients exhibited lower percentage levels of FVC and FEV
1 and a higher degree of dyspnea than compared to eugonadal COPD patients., Conclusion: Patients with severe COPD had a higher prevalence of hypogonadism compared to those with mild COPD. Additionally, severe COPD was identified as an independent risk factor for hypogonadism. These findings suggest that hypogonadism should be evaluated in patients with COPD, particularly in those with severe disease., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Abstract
Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the presence of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) syndrome in men and alterations in testicular echogenicity in a rural population sample., Materials and Methods: Prospective observational cohort study in which men between 45 and 75 years old from Villarta de San Juan area (Ciudad Real) were included. In order to determine the incidence of HIT, each patient was administered the AMSS test, a blood test to determine the concentration of testosterone, and a bilateral testicular ultrasound was performed., Results: 287 patients were included in the study. The diagnosis of LOH syndrome was established in 9.76% of them. 154 bilateral testicular ultrasounds were performed in which their testicular echogenicity patterns were evaluated. In 72.7% of the cases, alterations could be described in accordance with the standards proposed by the European Academy of Andrology of the year 2022. Testicular echogenicity evaluated by ultrasound demonstrated a sensitivity of 72.7%, a specificity of 78.8%, a negative predictive value of 94.5% and a positive predictive value of 36.4%, for the diagnosis of LOH., Conclusions: The determination of testicular echogenicity in patients with suspected LOH syndrome showed much greater specificity than the AMSS test and a similar negative predictive value. Based on its innocuousness and the fact that it is a relatively simple examination from a technical point of view, it could be postulated as a diagnostic tool to be taken into account in the identification of this syndrome., (Copyright © 2024 Sociedad Española de Médicos de Atención Primaria (SEMERGEN). Background: Hypogonadism is a common finding of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the prevalence of hypogonadism in COPD varies among studies. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the prevalence of hypogonadism in men with and without COPD., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 134 patients with stable COPD and 70 age-matched men with non-COPD. Hypogonadism was defined by the presence of symptoms according to the Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males questionnaire, along with total testosterone deficiency (<300ng/dL)., Results: Patients had a mean age of 68 years (SD, 6), a body mass index of 28kg/m
2 (SD, 6), and 17% were current smokers. The prevalence of hypogonadism was 41.8% in COPD men (N=56, 95%CI, 33-51) and 10.0% in non-COPD men (N=7, 95%CI, 4-20), with a prevalence ratio of 4.2 (95%CI, 2.0-8.7, p<0.001). The prevalence of low total testosterone concentrations (<300ng/dL) were significantly higher in COPD patients vs the control group (47.0% vs 15.7%, p=<0.001). In the COPD group, 89.3% of patients had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and 10.7%, hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. The prevalence of hypogonadism was higher in severe vs non-severe COPD patients (55.8% vs 35.2%; p=0.024)., Conclusions: The prevalence of hypogonadism was high and greater in COPD vs non-COPD men. This study suggests that COPD patients should be screened for hypogonadism., (Copyright © 2024 SEEN and SED. Published by Elsevier España, S.L.U. All rights reserved.)- Published

Steroids play an essential role in coordinating the activities of the hypothalamic-pitu-itary-gonad axis and their activity in controlling multiple processes, including mating and reproduction. The current study described the serum levels of testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), and cortisol in specimens older than two years of Pseudoplatystoma metaense x Leiarius marmoratus in captive conditions. Eight samplings were carried out from January to October. Nine hybrid individuals were used between males and females (4: 5, respectively), with 7 ± 2 individuals being randomly selected for each sampling. The blood samples were processed and analyzed every 40-45 days during the experimental period. The levels of T in males (0.65 ng/ml) and E2 in females (0.88 ng/ml) presented the highest peaks during the months of the most significant rainfall in the region (June -July) that triggered the beginning of the reproductive season. On the one hand, E2 levels in females are possibly associated with ovarian maturation and aromatase activity, while males showed decreases of 0.1 ng/ml from June to July; and a maximum increase of 0.7 ng/ml for October. On the other hand, cortisol levels increased towards the breeding season, being higher in females (18.8 - 25.4 ng/ml). This may indicate that despite high cortisol concentrations, steroid production was not inhibited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: precocious puberty (PP) is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics prematurely. There are different causes of PP. The objective of this article is to describe how inadvertent testosterone exposure can cause peripheral PP. Clinical case: five-year-old male with macrogenitosomia and increased growth rate (20 cm/year). Physical examination: height 135 cm (80th percentile), facial acne, and increased muscle development; in genitalia, pubarche grade II, penis length 12 cm (Tanner 5), testicles 4 cm3 (Tanner 2). Bone age of 8.5 years. In laboratory studies, it was highlighted that serum testosterone levels were 98 ng/dL (normal < 5 ng/dL). In directed questioning, the father refers to the use of gel containing testosterone for aesthetic purposes, and close contact with his children. With all this information, diagnosis of peripheral PP was concluded. The gel was suspended, observing a decrease in testosterone to 60 ng/dL at 10 days. Conclusion: testosterone-containing products used topically by parents can cause peripheral PP in children, which is characterized by virilization, with growth of external genitalia and accelerated skeletal maturation.
