Abstract

Background. Discussion on the impact of pocket money on positive behaviors is still debated.Objective. To investigate the effect of diverse money allowance schemes on risky behaviors (smoking, alcohol, binge drinking, drug use, gambling) during adolescence.Method. 989 students aged 15 from Lombardy (Italy) reported information on money availability in the 2018 wave of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. To analyze the relationship between money availability and risky behaviors we computed odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals through unconditional multiple logistic regression models.Results. Spending more than 10(sic) weekly was associated with higher likelihood to smoke, binge drink or gamble. Receiving pocket money (rather than receiving money upon request) was related to higher likelihood to engage in risky behaviors.Conclusions. Pocket money may have a negative impact on adolescents, particularly with a substantial amount of money. More research is needed to understand why providing money only if needed may serve as a protective factor against risky behaviors.

Abstract

The present study explores the concurrent contribution to sleep problems of individual-related, family-related, and school-related factors in adolescence. Gathering from the Italian 2018 Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) data collection, we used hierarchical logistic regression on a sample of 3397 adolescents (51% females, Mage = 13.99, SD = 1.62) to explore the contribution to sleep problems of the individual (Model 1: alcohol use, smoking, screen time, physical activity), familial (Model 2: parental communication, parental support), and school-related (Model 3: peer support, schoolmates/students support, teacher support and school pressure) variables. 28.3 percent of adolescents reported having sleep difficulties. Overall, Model 3 significantly improved over Model 2 and Model 1. Data showed that increasing smoking (OR = 1.11; 95% CI: 1.03–1.20) and screen time (OR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02–1.08) were associated with sleep difficulties but not alcohol use and physical activity. Also, impaired communication with both parents and increasing parental support (OR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.78–0.90) were associated with decreased odds of sleep problems. Finally, both increases in school pressure (OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.26–1.56) and lack of student support (OR = 1.25; 95% CI: 1.10–1.42) were associated with a higher likelihood of sleep problems, while peer support and teacher support were not. Abstract

Background: Information about the adherence to scientific societies guidelines in the ‘real-world’ therapeutic management of oncological patients are lacking. This multicenter, prospective survey was aimed to improve the knowledge relative to 2017-2018 recommendations of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM). Patients and methods: Treatment-naive adult patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma were enrolled. Group A received adjuvant therapy, group B received primary chemotherapy, and group C had metastatic disease. The results on patients accrued until 31 October 2019 with a mature follow-up were presented. Results: Since July 2017, 833 eligible patients of 923 (90%) were enrolled in 44 Italian centers. The median age was 69 years (range 36-89 years; 24% >75 years); 48% were female; 93% had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (PS) score of 0 or 1; group A: 16%, group B: 30%; group C: 54%; 72% Nord, 13% Center, 15% South. In group A, guidelines adherence was 68% [95% confidence interval (CI) 59% to 76%]; 53% of patients received gemcitabine and 15% gemcitabine þ capecitabine; median CA19.9 was 29 (range 0-7300; not reported 15%); median survival was 36.4 months (95% CI 27.5-47.3 months). In group B, guidelines adherence was 96% (95% CI 92% to 98%); 55% of patients received nab-paclitaxel þ gemcitabine, 27% FOLFIRINOX, 12% gemcitabine, and 3% clinical trial; median CA19.9 was 337 (range 0-20220; not reported 9%); median survival was 18.1 months (95% CI 15.6-19.9 months). In group C, guidelines adherence was 96% (95% CI 94% to 98%); 71% of patients received nabpaclitaxel þ gemcitabine, 16% gemcitabine, 8% FOLFIRINOX, and 4% clinical trial; liver and lung metastases were reported in 76% and 23% of patients, respectively; median CA19.9 value was 760 (range 0-1374500; not reported 9%); median survival was 10.0 months (95% CI 9.1-11.1 months). Conclusions: The GARIBALDI survey shows a very high rate of adherence to guidelines and survival outcome in line with the literature. CA19.9 testing should be enhanced; nutritional and psychological counseling represent an unmet need. Enrollment to assess adherence to updated AIOM guidelines is ongoing.

Abstract

The recycling of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) via depolymerization-polymerization is here proposed and assessed for the first time. Effective depolymerization of PHB to crotonic acid through a thermolytic distillation at mild conditions (170 °C and 150 mbar), and without the need of any catalyst, gives a crotonic acid-enriched condensate (94% yield and 98% selectivity towards trans-crotonic acid) that was used without any further purification as a substrate for producing renewed PHB with a culture of Cupriavidus necator. The yield of PHB (0.6 g PHB per g of crotonic acid), final PHB content (63%), and PHB-molecular weight (1.5 MDa) confirmed the technical feasibility of this tandem approach, with a 55% overall yield. A preliminary evaluation of the energy consumption of various depolymerization approaches indicated that the thermolytic distillation consumes 20–25% less energy than previously reported methods; the energy requirement for producing crotonic acid from PHBwaste with 50% moisture has a still acceptable energy demand (4 MJ/kgcrotonic acid), comparable to the energy required for obtaining fermentable sugars (4.4 MJ/kgsugar) to be used for feeding bacteria that accumulate PHB.

9. Development of a novel biochar-made porous monolith for enhanced C1 and H 2 fermentation.

Abstract

Biochar is a carbonaceous porous material that is produced through the thermal processing of biomass under oxygen-limited environment. Nevertheless, biochar is known to be an inexpensive and sustainable raw material with a wide range of possible applications. Recently, biochar has been discovered as an efficient biological catalyst for anaerobic conversion, mainly due to its highly porous structure with micro and macro channels, which procures a viable living area for attached-grown microorganisms. Whereas it is never applied to improve the biological conversion of gas substances such as C1 (e.g., CO, CO 2 ) and H 2 , which is a promising research area with increasing commercial interest. However, considering that biological reaction is limited by the target water solubility of gas substrates, special attention is required when combining biochar for gas fermentation. The goal was to create a novel gas sparger where the biofilm grows on biochar, thus improving the interaction with the gaseous substrate. 10. Patient Experience of Integrated Care: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Study Involving People with Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases.

Abstract

Introduction: Although the patient experience of integrated care has been documented for several chronic conditions, little is known in the context of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). This study provides a first overview of the patient experience of integrated care according to the perspective of people living with RMDs in Italy., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 433 participants who reported their experiences together with the importance assigned to different attributes of integrated care. Explorative factor analysis (EFA) and non-parametric ANOVA and ANCOVA statistical tests were employed to account for the differences in the answers provided by sample subgroups., Results: Two factors (namely, "Person-centred care" and "Health service delivery") were extracted in the EFA. Participants attributed high importance to both of them. Overall positive experiences were reported only for Person-centred care. The delivery of health services instead received a poor evaluation. Significantly worse experiences were observed for women and people that were either older, unemployed, with comorbidities or lower self-reported health, or less engaged in their healthcare management., Conclusions: Italians with RMDs described integrated care as an important approach to care. However, further effort is needed to allow them to perceive an actual benefit from integrated care practices. 11. Exploring the Motivational Roots of Getting Vaccinated against COVID-19 in a Population of Vaccinated Pediatric Healthcare Professionals: Evidence from an Italian Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract

Health care professionals (HCPs) working in pediatric and perinatal settings have a strong influence on parental vaccine decision making. Furthermore, HCPs' motivations behind vaccine acceptance are associated with their likelihood of recommending vaccines to their patients. Understanding these motivations in the context of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign may aid in the development of interventions that improve pediatric practitioners' vaccine confidence and prescription. We aimed at studying the motivations affecting COVID-19 vaccination behavior among a sample of vaccinated Italian HCPs working in pediatric settings. A sample ( n = 162) of HCPs completed an online self-reported survey exploring motivations behind getting vaccinated against COVID-19. Emotions of HCPs at the moment of COVID-19 vaccination injection were also recorded to collect data about the main feelings connected to the vaccination decision-making process. Data were collected between 19 March 2021 and 21 April 2021. The most effective motivational incentives were the beliefs that vaccination helped protect vulnerable members of the community (97.5% agreement), could protect one's own health (93.7%), health authorities could be trusted (58.7%), and the vaccine had been rigorously tested (53.8%). Actual personal exposure to COVID was less important (reported importance agreement 16-24%), and the influence of news and social media was still lower (4-6%). Differences between physicians' and other HCPs' ratings were also found. Finally, emotional status at vaccination showed high ratings for positive emotions surrounding the vaccination act. This study provided additional evidence about the multifaceted motivations behind COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and showed the potential of understanding the psychosocial roots of vaccine behaviors for shaping public communication campaigns. The highly emotionally charged response obtained underscores the importance of strengthening the community feeling among HCPs.

12. Effect of biochar amendment on organic matter and dissolved organic matter composition of agricultural soils from a two-year field experiment.

Abstract

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important organic matter fraction that plays a key role in many biological and chemical processes in soil. The effect of biochar addition on the content and composition of soil organic matter (SOM) and DOM in an agricultural soil in Italy was investigated within a two-year period. UV-Vis spectroscopy and analytical pyrolysis have been applied to study complex components in DOM soil samples. Additionally, analytical pyrolysis was used to provide qualitative information of SOM at molecular level and the properties of biochar before and one year after amendment. A method was developed to quantify biochar levels by thermogravimetric analysis that enabled to identify deviations from the amendment rate. The water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) concentrations in the amended soils were significantly lower than those in the control soils, indicating that biochar decreased the leaching of DOM. DOM in treated soils was characterized by a higher aromatic character according to analytical pyrolysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Moreover, a relatively high abundance of compounds with N was observed in pyrolysates of treated soils, suggesting that biochar increased the proportion of microbial DOM.
