Among biotic and abiotic stresses, the most restrictive for plant distribution is salt stress, where different concentrations might exert harmful effects on seed germination. Recently, nanomaterials were used successfully to mitigate these stresses, indicating that plants may be able to develop normally in adverse conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the germination of Persian clover seedlings under salt stress conditions. Following sown on substrate paper, seeds were tested after exposure to different concentrations of graphene oxide (0, 125, 250, or 500 mg L-1 GO), sodium chloride (0; -0.1; -0.2; -0.3, or -0.4 MPa NaCl) and/or GO + salt concomitantly, and then stored for 7 days in a germination chamber at 20°C in the presence of light. Seed germination and growth parameters of seedlings were determined. Graphene oxide demonstrated protective effect against salt stress as evident by no marked adverse effects on seed germination where GO blocked the salt-induced reduction in germination. The results obtained provide references for the safe application of nanomaterials and emphasize the significance of GO as a promising material for reducing the toxicity of salts in agriculture. Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and is characterized by a progressive deterioration in cognitive function, which typically begins with impairment in memory. Persian clover (Trifolium resupinatum) is an annual plant found in central Asia. Due to its contents (high flavonoid and isoflavones), extensive researches have been done on its therapeutic properties, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment. In this study, we investigate the neuroprotective effects of this plant on Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced AD in rats. Material and methods: This research aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of Trifolium resupinatum on the spatial learning and memory, superoxide dismutase (SOD), expressions of ß amyloid 1-42 (Aß1-42), and ß amyloid 1-40 (Aß1-40) in the hippocampus of STZ-induced Alzheimer rats. Results: Our data showed that Trifolium resupinatum extract administration for two weeks before and one week after AD induction significantly improves maze escape latency (p = 0.027, 0.001 and 0.02 in 100, 200, and 300 mg of the extract, respectively) and maze retention time (p = 0.003, 0.04 and 0.001 in 100, 200, and 300 mg of the extract, respectively). Also, the administration of this extract significantly increases the SOD levels from 1.72+0.20 to 2.31+0.45 (p = 0.009), 2.48+0.32 (p = 0.001) and 2.33+0.32 (p = 0.007) and decreases the expressions of Aß1-42) (p = 0.001 in all concentrations of the extract) and Aß1-40) (p = 0.001 in all concentrations of the extract) in the rat's hippocampus. Conclusions: This study suggests that the alcoholic extract of Trifolium resupinatum has anti-Alzheimer and neuroprotective effects on rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The non-turning or only superficial turning of soil is considered to be a gentle tillage method. Nevertheless, conventional ploughs are widely used in organic farming for crop production reasons. For the further development of reduced tillage, and up to no tillage, the effects of three cover crop species and their incorporation with different tillage intensities on nitrogen (N) dynamics, weed emergence and the yield of the subsequent main crop, oats, were examined in a repeated organic one-year trial. Sinapis alba, Trifolium resupinatum, Vicia sativa and bare fallow were tested and incorporated using (1) a plough (PL), (2) reduced tillage (RT), (3) mulching + drilling (MD) and (4) direct drilling (DD). V. sativa was the most promising cover crop in combination with RT, MD and DD. In Trial 1, the soil mineral N content and oat yields after the introduction of V. sativa were on a similar level as those in the PL treatments, and weeds were not yield-limiting there. In Trial 2, the biomass production of V. sativa was only about half of that of Trial 1 and did not offer sufficient weed control, but V. sativa was still successful in the RT treatments. In both trials, the yield differences were more pronounced between the cover crop treatments after RT than after PL. RT, therefore, was more dependent on an adequate cover crop species than PL. Persian clover (Trifolium resupinatum L.) represents an annual forage legume cultivated for forage quality and for its importance as ameliorating plant within the forage crop rotation. The researches performed on the determination of the optimal planting period at the beginning of autumn proved the existence of a direct relationship between the sum of temperatures at planting, at the beginning of winter, and the dry matter yield, respectively between the number of sprigs at the beginning of winter and the content in soluble sugars in roots. According to planting date, the dry matter yield oscillated between 1.5 t/ha in the variant planted on 20th September and 9.4 t/ha in the variant planted on 10th August.

The experimental display included a bifactorial experience, with different proportions of Trifolium resupinatum and Lolium multiflorum-based associations and different Nitrogen fertilization doses (N0, N100). The studies, performed during a 3-year period, made evident the dry matter yield, the total Nitrogen amount and the amount of transferred Nitrogen. According to association’s floristic composition, the amount of N transferred from legume species, on the whole, was between 48 and 145 kg/ha, in the variants without fertilization, and between 36 and 99 kg/ha, in the variants fertilized with N100.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Trifolium resupinatum L. (Fabaceae), known as Persian clover, ethnomedicinally used in Persian folk medicine to treat peritoneal inflammation, rheumatism, and back pain., Aim of the Study: To investigate the antineuropathic and antinociceptive activities of Trifolium resupinatum leaves essential oil (TREO) in male Wistar rats, as well as to explore the potential mechanisms of action., Materials and Methods: The antinociceptive activity of TREO and its main constituents, quercetin (Qc) was assessed using the formalin-induced paw licking test. Moreover, the potential mechanisms of antinociception were evaluated through various competitive and non-competitive antagonisms. Additionally, the antineuropathic potential was investigated using the cervical spinal cord hemi-contusion (CCS) model, and the role of phosphorylated Stat-3 was analyzed using Western blotting., Results: TREO exerted significant antinociceptive activity (P < 0.01) in both phases of the formalin-induced test; however, its effects were more pronounced in the second phase. Modulators of the NO-cGMP-K + channel pathway significantly reversed the antinociceptive activity of TREO (P < 0.05). Additionally, antagonists of TRPV1 and TRPV2, as well as CB1 and GABA A receptors, significantly reversed the antinociceptive effects of TREO (P < 0.05). In another study, both TREO and Qc significantly attenuated hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia (P < 0.01) when evaluated using the CCS-induced nociception model. Notably, TREO also reduced the expression levels of interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-2, and tumor necrosis factor alpha in CCS-induced rats (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: TREO and Qc exhibit both antinociceptive and anti-neuropathic activities. The antinociceptive effects are partially mediated through the NO-cGMP-K + channel pathways, along with the activation of TRPV, GABA, and cannabinoid receptors. Up to 75% of nitrogen (N) taken up during cauliflowers production is allocated to leaves, which are left as crop residues after harvest. The inclusion of cauliflower, cultivated alone or intercropped with legumes, in rotation schemes, is a promising tool to optimize N availability to subsequent crops. This original study assessed, for the first time in South Tyrol, Italy, the effect of removal or soil incorporation of cauliflower and clover residues on the growth and N uptake of subsequent lettuce. In 2015, cauliflower was sole-cropped or intercropped with clover, under different N regimes (N0, N1, N2, N3 = 0, 75, 150, 300 kg N ha−1). Cauliflower and clover residues were either removed or incorporated in the soil in 2016. The effects of the residual fertility left by the N fertilizer, the two cropping systems, and the crop residues were assessed on the yield and N uptake of two subsequent lettuce crops. Isotopic 15N-labeled cauliflower residues were additionally used to quantify the N contribution of cauliflower residues to lettuce growth. During the first lettuce crop, residues incorporation was the only factor increasing lettuce yields (+41%) and N uptake (+58%). The residual effect of N1 and N2 rates increased the lettuce N uptake when clover residues were incorporated. During the second lettuce crop, residues incorporation increased lettuce yields (+26%) and N uptake (+44%). On average, 64% and 35% of the lettuce N amounts, in the first and second cycles, respectively, derived from cauliflower residues, and accounted for 38% of the total N contained in cauliflower residues (214 kg N ha−1). Results from this experiment, uncommon for the examined species, demonstrate that incorporation of cauliflower and clover residues provides an excellent source of N for lettuce. Incorporating residues of the preceding cauliflower crop, alone or intercropped with clover, before establishing the lettuce crop, substantially reduce the N fertilization needs of subsequent lettuce crops.
