Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We describe how the Mordell-Weil group of rational points on a certain family of elliptic curves give rise to solutions to a conjecture of Erd\"{o}s on $3$-powerful numbers, and state a related conjecture which can be viewed as an elliptic curve analogue of the Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture.

Abstract

We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

Abstract

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. Abstract

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

The ability to use past experience to effectively guide decision-making declines in older adulthood. Such declines have been theorized to emerge from either impairments of striatal reinforcement learning systems (RL) or impairments of recurrent networks in prefrontal and parietal cortex that support working memory (WM). Distinguishing between these hypotheses has been challenging because either RL or WM could be used to facilitate successful decision-making in typical laboratory tasks. Here we investigated the neurocomputational correlates of age-related decision-making deficits using an RL-WM task to disentangle these mechanisms, a computational model to quantify them, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy to link them to their molecular bases. Our results reveal that task performance is worse in older age, in a manner best explained by working memory deficits, as might be expected if cortical recurrent networks were unable to sustain persistent activity across multiple trials. Consistent with this, we show that older adults had lower levels of prefrontal glutamate, the excitatory neurotransmitter thought to support persistent activity, compared to younger adults. Individuals with the lowest prefrontal glutamate levels displayed the greatest impairments in working memory after controlling for other anatomical and metabolic factors. Together, our results suggest that lower levels of prefrontal glutamate may contribute to failures of working memory systems and impaired decision-making in older adulthood.

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment which uses $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ beams to constrain CP-violating effects in a 3-flavor PMNS neutrino mixing model. Through $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{e}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}\to\bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance channels, T2K is sensitive to CP-violating effects in neutrino mixing. An excess of $\nu_{e}$ candidates in the $\nu$-beam mode is observed when compared to the CP conserving cases. T2K finds a best fit value of $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals and excludes CP-conserving values of $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$ of $0$ and $\pi$ at the 90% CL. $J_{\mathrm{CP}}=0$ is also excluded at 2$\sigma$ when using a flat prior in $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$, favoring negative values., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Conference proceedings for 20th Conference on Flavor Physics and CP Violation, FPCP2022

Abstract

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures. Abstract

A thorough understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering physics is crucial for the successful execution of the entire US neutrino physics program. Neutrino-nucleus interaction constitutes one of the biggest systematic uncertainties in neutrino experiments - both at intermediate energies affecting long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), as well as at low energies affecting coherent scattering neutrino program - and could well be the difference between achieving or missing discovery level precision. To this end, electron-nucleus scattering experiments provide vital information to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to be used in neutrino experiments. In this white paper, we highlight connections between electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering physics at energies ranging from 10s of MeV to a few GeV, review the status of ongoing and planned electron scattering experiments, identify gaps, and layout a path forward that benefits the neutrino community. We also highlight the systemic challenges with respect to the divide between the nuclear and high-energy physics communities and funding that presents additional hurdle in mobilizing these connections to the benefit of neutrino programs., Comment: 37 pages, contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 accesses host cells via angiotensin-converting enzyme-2, which is also affected by commonly used angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), raising concerns that ACEI or ARB exposure may portend differential COVID-19 outcomes. In parallel cohort studies of outpatient and inpatient COVID-19-diagnosed adults with hypertension, we assessed associations between antihypertensive exposure (ACEI/ARB vs. non-ACEI/ARB antihypertensives, as well as between ACEI- vs. ARB) at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis, using electronic health record data from PCORnet health systems. The primary outcomes were all-cause hospitalization or death (outpatient cohort) or all-cause death (inpatient), analyzed via Cox regression weighted by inverse probability of treatment weights. From February 2020 through December 9, 2020, 11,246 patients (3477 person-years) and 2200 patients (777 person-years) were included from 17 health systems in outpatient and inpatient cohorts, respectively. There were 1015 all-cause hospitalization or deaths in the outpatient cohort (incidence, 29.2 events per 100 person-years), with no significant difference by ACEI/ARB use (adjusted HR 1.01; 95% CI 0.88, 1.15). In the inpatient cohort, there were 218 all-cause deaths (incidence, 28.1 per 100 person-years) and ACEI/ARB exposure was associated with reduced death (adjusted HR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.57, 0.99). ACEI, versus ARB exposure, was associated with higher risk of hospitalization in the outpatient cohort, but no difference in all-cause death in either cohort. There was no evidence of effect modification across pre-specified baseline characteristics. Our results suggest ACEI and ARB exposure have no detrimental effect on hospitalizations and may reduce death among hypertensive patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

Abstract

Numerous papers have studied the problem of determining upper bounds for the number of integer points on elliptic curves of the form y 2 = x 3 − m x , and quartic curves of the form X 2 − d Y 4 = k. Bounds for the number of integer solutions to such quartic equations typically depend on both of the coefficients d , k. The purpose of this paper is to examine more closely how the number of integer points on such quartic curves seems to depend almost entirely on the number of prime factors of k. This is done by focusing in on the problem of bounding the number of squares in certain recurrence sequences. In particular, using some arithmetic on elliptic curves, it is proved that infinitely many such sequences can have four squares, but that a fifth square remains elusive after extensive computation, suggesting that an absolute bound for the number of squares is more than likely, and also suggesting that the above assertion regarding the dependence on the number of prime factors of k. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Single-center studies have shown that single photon emission computed tomography myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurement is accurate compared with MBF measured with microspheres in a porcine model, positron emission tomography, and angiography. Clinical implementation requires consistency across multiple sites. The study goal is to determine the intersite processing repeatability of single photon emission computed tomography MBF and the additional camera time required. METHODS: Five sites (Canada, Italy, Japan, Germany, and Singapore) each acquired 25 to 35 MBF studies at rest and with pharmacological stress using technetium-99m-tetrofosmin on a pinhole-collimated cadmium-zinc-telluride–based cardiac single photon emission computed tomography camera with standardized list-mode imaging and processing protocols. Patients had intermediate to high pretest probability of coronary artery disease. MBF was measured locally and at a core laboratory using commercially available software. The time a room was occupied for an MBF study was compared with that for a standard rest/stress myocardial perfusion study. With motion correction, the overall correlation in MBF between core laboratory and local site was 0.93 (range, 0.87–0.97) at rest, 0.90 (range, 0.84–0.96) at stress, and 0.84 (range, 0.70–0.92) for myocardial flow reserve. The local-to-core difference in global MBF (bias-MBF) was 5.4% (−3.8% to 14.8%; median [interquartile range]) at rest and 5.4% (−6.2% to 19.4%) at stress. Between the 5 sites, bias-MBF ranged from −1.6% to 11.0% at rest and from −1.9% to 16.3% at stress; the interquartile range in bias-MBF was between 9.3% (4.8%–14.0%) and 22.3% (−10.3% to 12.0%) at rest and between 17.0% (−11.3% to 5.6%) and 33.3% (−10.4% to 22.9%) at stress and was not significantly different between most sites. Both bias and interquartile range were like previously reported interobserver variability and less than the SD of the test-retest difference of 30%. The overall difference in myocardial flow reserve was 1.52% (−10.6% to 11.3%). There were no significant differences between with and without motion correction. The average additional acquisition time varied between sites from 44 to 79 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: The average bias-MBF and bias-MFR values were small with standard deviations substantially less than the test-retest variability. Abstract

This cohort study evaluates the association of use of a statistical model to evaluate suicide risk with improvements in evidence-based care and reductions in subsequent suicide-related behaviors in a Native American population. Key Points: Question: How well does a statistical suicide risk model perform in a Native American community-based setting? Findings: In this prognostic study of 400 Native American individuals in the White Mountain Apache Tribe's suicide surveillance and case management system, implementation of a suicide risk model and related care improved risk identification and was associated with an extended reach of care and a reduced risk of suicidal behaviors among individuals identified as at risk for suicide and/or self-harm. Meaning: The findings suggest that a statistical model to identify risk of suicide and an associated care model can be implemented in practice, but further testing is needed. Importance: There are many prognostic models of suicide risk, but few have been prospectively evaluated, and none has been developed specifically for Native American populations. Objective: To prospectively validate a statistical risk model implemented in a community setting and evaluate whether use of this model was associated with improved reach of evidence-based care and reduced subsequent suicide-related behavior among high-risk individuals. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prognostic study, done in partnership with the White Mountain Apache Tribe, used data collected by the Apache Celebrating Life program for adults aged 25 years or older identified as at risk for suicide and/or self-harm from January 1, 2017, through August 31, 2022. Data were divided into 2 cohorts: (1) individuals and suicide-related events from the period prior to suicide risk alerts being active (February 29, 2020) and (2) individuals and events from the time after alerts were activated. Main Outcomes and Measures: Aim 1 focused on a prospective validation of the risk model in cohort 1. Aim 2 compared the odds of repeated suicide-related events and the reach of brief contact interventions among high-risk cases between cohort 2 and cohort 1. Results: Across both cohorts, a total of 400 individuals identified as at risk for suicide and/or self-harm (mean [SD] age, 36.5 [10.3] years; 210 females [52.5%]) had 781 suicide-related events. Cohort 1 included 256 individuals with index events prior to active notifications. Most index events (134 [52.5%]) were for binge substance use, followed by 101 (39.6%) for suicidal ideation, 28 (11.0%) for a suicide attempt, and 10 (3.9%) for self-injury. Among these individuals, 102 (39.5%) had subsequent suicidal behaviors. In cohort 1, the majority (220 [86.3%]) were classified as low risk, and 35 individuals (13.3%) were classified as high risk for suicidal attempt or death in the 12 months after their index event. Cohort 2 included 144 individuals with index events after notifications were activated. For aim 1, those classified as high risk had a greater odds of subsequent suicide-related events compared with those classified as low risk (odds ratio [OR], 3.47; 95% CI, 1.53-7.86; P =.003; area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.65). For aim 2, which included 57 individuals classified as high risk across both cohorts, during the time when alerts were inactive, high-risk individuals were more likely to have subsequent suicidal behaviors compared with when alerts were active (OR, 9.14; 95% CI, 1.85-45.29; P =.007). Before the active alerts, only 1 of 35 (2.9%) individuals classified as high risk received a wellness check; after the alerts were activated, 11 of 22 (50.0%) individuals classified as high risk received 1 or more wellness checks. Conclusions and Relevance: This study showed that a statistical model and associated care system developed in partnership with the White Mountain Apache Tribe enhanced identification of individuals at high risk for suicide and was associated with a reduced risk for subsequent suicidal behaviors and increased reach of care. Abstract

Introduction:Opioid use disorders (OUDs) constitute a major public health issue, and we urgently need alternative methods for characterizing risk for OUD. Electronic health records (EHRs) are useful tools for understanding complex medical phenotypes but have been underutilized for OUD because of challenges related to underdiagnosis, binary diagnostic frameworks, and minimally characterized reference groups. As a first step in addressing these challenges, a new paradigm is warranted that characterizes risk for opioid prescription misuse on a continuous scale of severity, i.e., as a continuum. Methods:Across sites within the PsycheMERGE network, we extracted prescription opioid data and diagnoses that co-occur with OUD (including psychiatric and substance use disorders, pain-related diagnoses, HIV, and hepatitis C) for over 2.6 million patients across three health registries (Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Mass General Brigham, Geisinger) between 2005 and 2018. We defined three groups based on levels of opioid exposure: no prescriptions, minimal exposure, and chronic exposure and then compared the comorbidity profiles of these groups to the full registries and to those with OUD diagnostic codes. Results:Our results confirm that EHR data reflects known higher prevalence of substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, medical, and pain diagnoses in patients with OUD diagnoses and chronic opioid use. Comorbidity profiles that distinguish opioid exposure are strikingly consistent across large health systems, indicating the phenotypes described in this new quantitative framework are robust to health systems differences. Conclusion:This work indicates that EHR prescription opioid data can serve as a platform to characterize complex risk markers for OUD using existing data.

Abstract

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts. However, only the surface atoms in the NPs can participate in catalytic reactions. To maximize the atomic efficiency, the active sites can be reduced to single atoms. Generally, catalysts that have isolated metal atoms on the surface of a support are called single-atom catalysts (SACs). Many techniques have been developed and applied to probe the structures of SACs. Nevertheless, the structural characterization of SACs is still challenging as it requires the analysis of their structure and properties with atomic and sometimes even subatomic resolution. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful tool in investigating the local coordination environment of SACs since it is element-specific and can provide accurate structural information at the subatomic level (∼0.01 Å).

Abstract

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters have attracted significant interest due to their molecule-like properties. [Ag25(SR)18]−is one of the Ag nanoclusters having a unique structure similar to its Au counterpart but different from most other Ag nanoclusters. In this study, a new five-shell fitting method was developed to analyze the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of [Ag25(SR)18]−to provide more insights into its bonding properties. This new method was successfully applied to compare the bond lengths as the temperature changed from 300 to 90 K. Interestingly, the metal core of [Ag25(SR)18]−showed negative thermal expansion behavior that was not observed for Au25(SR)18. These unique bonding properties of [Ag25(SR)18]−could be related to the Ag4tetrahedral units found in the metal core, which were absent in Au25(SR)18. These new findings about its bonding properties can provide a better understanding of the structure–property relationship of [Ag25(SR)18]−. This new EXAFS analysis method could be applied to gain insights into the bonding properties of other metal nanoclusters.

Introduction:Myocardial blood flow (MBF) imaging with SPECT is possible using cardiac-specific cameras. Single-center studies have shown that SPECT MBF is accurate compared with PET MBF and angiography. Clinical implementation requires consistency of SPECT MBF measurements across multiple sites. This study is the first multi-center evaluation of the inter-site processing variability of SPECT MBF.Objective:To compare SPECT MBF obtained locally to MBF calculated at the core lab in Ottawa, Canada.Methods:Six sites (2 in Canada and one each from Japan, Singapore, Italy, and Germany) each acquired 25 rest/stress MBF studies using Tc99m-tetrofosmin (377 MBq at rest; 1060 MBq at stress) on a pinhole-collimated cadmium-zinc-telluride(CZT)-based cardiac SPECT camera. Patients had intermediate to high pre-test probability of coronary artery disease. MBF was analyzed locally and at a core lab using commercially available software. The time that a room was occupied for a MBF study was compared to that for a standard rest/stress myocardial perfusion study.Results:Preliminary results from 4 sites showed a correlation in MBF between the core lab and the local site of an average of 0.96 (range 0.95 to 0.97) at rest and 0.89 (range 0.77 to 0.96) at stress. From Bland-Altman analysis, the mean bias from zero in global MBF between local and core-lab analysis was 3.3% +/- 13.4% at rest and 3.0 % +/- 18.6% at stress. Between the 4 sites, the bias ranged from -4.1% to 9.9% at rest and from -6.3% to 12.8% at stress; the standard deviation (SD) ranged from 10.5% to 14.0% at rest and from 12.0% to 24.5% at stress. There was no significant difference between sites in the SD. The SD of the local-to-core-lab MBF differences is less than the SD of the test-retest difference of 30%, measured in a previous single-center study. The average additional time to perform a MBF study acquisition varied between sites from 45 to 76 min. This additional time includes the time needed to pharmacologically stress the patient which is normally done outside the camera room.Conclusions:This multi-center evaluation supports the feasibility of consistently measuring MBF using CZT-based cardiac SPECT cameras, as has been suggested from previous single-center studies.
