The luminescent nature of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) has been intensively investigated in recent years. Plasmon-enhanced electronic Raman scattering and the radiation channels of metallic photoluminescence (PL) involving conventional carrier recombinations and emergent particle plasmons are proposed in the past few decades but largely limited to weak excitation regimes. Here, we systematically examine the PL evolution of plasmonic NPs under different excitation power levels. The spectral resonances and chromaticity of PL are investigated within and beyond the scope of geometry conservation. Results indicate the nature of PL in plasmonic NPs could be a process of graybody radiation, including one factor of plasmonic emissivity in the weak excitation regime and the other factor of blackbody radiation in the strong excitation regime. This comprehensive analysis provides a fundamental understanding of the luminescent nature of plasmonic NPs and highlights their potential applications in transient temperature detection at the nanometer scale.

Refractive index (RI) sensors play an important role in various applications including biomedical analysis and food processing industries. However, developing RI sensors with both high resolution and wide linear range remains a great challenge due to the tradeoff between quality (Q) factor and free spectral range (FSR) of resonance mode. Herein, the optical steelyard principle is presented to address this challenge by synergizing resonances from the Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity and metasurface, integrated in a hybrid configuration form on the end facet of optical fibers. Specifically, the FP resonance acting like the scale beam, offers high resolution while the plasmonic resonance acting like the weight, provides a wide linear range. Featuring asymmetric Fano spectrum due to modal coupling between these two resonances, a high Q value (~ 3829 in liquid) and a sensing resolution (figure of merit) of 2664 RIU−1 are experimentally demonstrated. Meanwhile, a wide RI sensing range (1.330–1.430 in the simulation and 1.3403–1.3757 in the experiment) is realized, corresponding to a spectral shift across several FSRs (four and two FSRs in the simulation and experiment, respectively). The proposed steelyard RI sensing strategy is promising in versatile monitoring applications, e.g., water salinity/turbidity and biomedical reaction process, and could be extended to other types of sensors calling for both high resolution and wide linear range. Water-wave diffractions caused by three-dimensional (3D) periodic rectangular blocks are analytically modeled with a Fourier modal analysis method using full-linear potential theory. The boundary conditions in the dimension of periodic extent are conjugated into the other two dimensions in terms of Toeplitz matrices. The elements of the Toeplitz matrices are the Fourier harmonics of vertical and horizontal eigenfunctions converted to special-frequency domains. This allows us to reduce the 3D model system to an ordinary two-dimensional counterpart. The boundary matchings finally lead to a general form of block centrosymmetric matrix for the rectangular topography. A fair consistency between the present results and the data from the literature validates such a Fourier modal analysis. Effects of different parameters on multiple-modal diffraction efficiencies of reflected and transmitted wave energy are computed and analyzed. A workshop was held in China in October 2023 to discuss the conservation of the Chinese giant salamander, which is currently categorized as Critically Endangered due to overexploitation and habitat loss. The workshop attendees, representing various stakeholders, agreed on several key actions, including research to resolve taxonomic issues, field surveys to protect remaining populations, and investigations into how salamander farming could benefit conservation efforts. Other actions included refining the process for releasing individuals from farms, advocating for legislative changes, studying the species' behavior and ecology, and implementing better practices to prevent the introduction and transmission of pathogens. In the past decade, the cleavage protein irisin derived from fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) in exercise-stimulated skeletal muscle has increasingly become a biomarker associated with metabolic syndrome and osteoporosis in humans. However, it is unclear how this protein facilitates muscle-adipose-bone connectivity in metabolic and skeletal homeostasis. In this study, we unexpectedly observed that the FNDC5 gene can be markedly activated during the differentiation of brown adipocytes but not white adipocytes, and that FNDC5 is specifically expressed in mouse brown adipose tissues (BATs). But unlike it in the skeletal muscles, the expression of FNDC5/irisin in BAT is promoted by cold exposure rather than exercise in mice. Analysis of promoter activity and chromatin immunoprecipitation further showed that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α and thyroid hormone receptors cooperate on the FNDC5 gene promoter to induce its transcription. We found that FNDC5/irisin stimulates the runt-related transcriptional factors RUNX1/2 via a focal adhesion kinase-dependent pathway in both bone and subcutaneous white adipose tissues. Mechanistically, focal adhesion kinase is stimulated by FNDC5/irisin and then facilitates E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase WW domain-containing protein 2 to ubiquitinate and subsequently activate RUNX1/2, culminating in the activation of osteoblast-related or thermogenesis-related genes. Interestingly, the PR domain containing protein 16 that is crucial for subcutaneous white adipose "browning" and skeletal development was found to form a complex with RUNX1/2 in a WW domain-containing protein 2-dependent manner.
