Abstract

In this paper, we present a large-scale evaluation probing GPT-4V's capabilities and limitations for biomedical image analysis. GPT-4V represents a breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI) for computer vision, with applications in the biomedical domain. We assess GPT-4V's performance across 16 medical imaging categories, including radiology, oncology, ophthalmology, pathology, and more. Tasks include modality recognition, anatomy localization, disease diagnosis, report generation, and lesion detection. The extensive experiments provide insights into GPT-4V's strengths and weaknesses. Results show GPT-4V's proficiency in modality and anatomy recognition but difficulty with disease diagnosis and localization. GPT-4V excels at diagnostic report generation, indicating strong image captioning skills. While promising for biomedical imaging AI, GPT-4V requires further enhancement and validation before clinical deployment. We emphasize responsible development and testing for trustworthy integration of biomedical AGI. This rigorous evaluation of GPT-4V on diverse medical images advances understanding of multimodal large language models (LLMs) and guides future work toward impactful healthcare applications.

Abstract

Visual question answering requires a system to provide an accurate natural language answer given an image and a natural language question. However, it is widely recognized that previous generic VQA methods often exhibit a tendency to memorize biases present in the training data rather than learning proper behaviors, such as grounding images before predicting answers. Therefore, these methods usually achieve high in-distribution but poor out-of-distribution performance. In recent years, various datasets and debiasing methods have been proposed to evaluate and enhance the VQA robustness, respectively. This paper provides the first comprehensive survey focused on this emerging fashion. Specifically, we first provide an overview of the development process of datasets from in-distribution and out-of-distribution perspectives. Then, we examine the evaluation metrics employed by these datasets. Thirdly, we propose a typology that presents the development process, similarities and differences, robustness comparison, and technical features of existing debiasing methods. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss the robustness of representative vision-and-language pre-training models on VQA. Finally, through a thorough review of the available literature and experimental analysis, we discuss the key areas for future research from various viewpoints., Comment: Accepted by IEEE TPAMI

6. Adaptive loose optimization for robust question answering

Abstract

Question answering methods are well-known for leveraging data bias, such as the language prior in visual question answering and the position bias in machine reading comprehension (extractive question answering). Current debiasing methods often come at the cost of significant in-distribution performance to achieve favorable out-of-distribution generalizability, while non-debiasing methods sacrifice a considerable amount of out-of-distribution performance in order to obtain high in-distribution performance. Therefore, it is challenging for them to deal with the complicated changing real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel loss function with adaptive loose optimization, which seeks to make the best of both worlds for question answering. Our main technical contribution is to reduce the loss adaptively according to the ratio between the previous and current optimization state on mini-batch training data. This loose optimization can be used to prevent non-debiasing methods from overlearning data bias while enabling debiasing methods to maintain slight bias learning. Experiments on the visual question answering datasets, including VQA v2, VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, GQA-OOD, and the extractive question answering dataset SQuAD demonstrate that our approach enables QA methods to obtain state-of-the-art in- and out-of-distribution performance in most cases. Abstract

This paper outlines the establishment of a generic cryogenic CMOS database in which key electrical parameters and transfer characteristics of the MOSFETs are quantified as functions of device size, temperature/frequency responses. Meanwhile, comprehensive device statistical study is conducted to evaluate the influence of variation and mismatch effects at low temperatures. Furthermore, by incorporating the Cryo-CMOS compact model into the process design kit (PDK), the cryogenic 4 Kb SRAM, 5-bit flash ADC and 8-bit current steering DAC are designed, and their performance is readily investigated and optimized on the EDA-compatible platform, hence laying a solid foundation for large-scale cryogenic IC design.

Abstract

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging aims at recovering hidden objects located beyond the traditional line of sight, with potential applications in areas such as security monitoring, search and rescue, and autonomous driving. Conventionally, NLOS imaging requires raster scanning of laser pulses and collecting the reflected photons from a relay wall. High-time-resolution detectors obtain the flight time of photons undergoing multiple scattering for image reconstruction. Expanding the scanning area while maintaining the sampling rate is an effective method to enhance the resolution of NLOS imaging, where an angle magnification system is commonly adopted. Compared to traditional optical components, planar optical elements such as liquid crystal, offer the advantages of high efficiency, lightweight, low cost, and ease of processing. By introducing liquid crystal with angle magnification capabilities into the NLOS imaging system, we successfully designed a large field-of-view high-resolution system for a wide scanning area and high-quality image reconstruction. Furthermore, in order to reduce the long data acquisition time, a sparse scanning method capitalizing on the correlation between measurement data to reduce the number of sampling points is thus proposed. Both the simulation and experiment results demonstrate a >20 % reduction in data acquisition time while maintaining the exact resolution.

46. Multiple Slabs and Complex Mantle Flows in the Molucca Sea Subduction Zone.

Abstract

The Molucca Sea subduction zone is unique for its active divergent double‐subducted slab located in the north of the Java and Banda subduction zones. The spatial proximity of these subduction zones would cause a complex mantle flow field. To clarify the mantle dynamics, here we present P‐wave tilting‐axis anisotropic tomography obtained by inverting a large number of local and teleseismic travel‐time data recorded at 254 seismic stations in eastern Southeast Asia. Our results suggest that the mantle structure and dynamics of the western Molucca Sea subduction zone may be remotely controlled by the Java and Banda subduction zones. Mantle convection in the big mantle wedge west of the Molucca Sea subduction zone is possibly influenced by east‐west mantle flow associated with compression of the Indo‐Australian slab as well as north‐south mantle flow related to rollback of the Indo‐Australian slab. In contrast, the eastern Molucca Sea subduction zone is virtually unaffected by other subduction zones, probably due to the ongoing slab subduction there.
