Abstract

Objectives: The new daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a rare primary headache disorder. However, the underlying mechanisms of NDPH remain incompletely understood. This study aims to apply seed‐based analysis to explore the functional connectivity (FC) of brainstem nuclei in patients with NDPH using resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: The FC analysis from the region of interest (ROI) to whole brain voxels was used to investigate 29 patients with NDPH and 37 well‐matched healthy controls (HCs) with 3.0 Tesla MRI. The 76 nuclei in the brainstem atlas were defined as ROIs. Furthermore, we explored the correlations between FC and patients' clinical characteristics and neuropsychological evaluations. Results: Patients with NDPH exhibited reduced FC in multiple brainstem nuclei compared to HCs (including right inferior medullary reticular formation, right mesencephalic reticular formation, bilateral locus coeruleus, bilateral laterodorsal tegmental nucleus‐central gray of the rhombencephalon, median raphe, left medial parabrachial nucleus, periaqueductal gray, and bilateral ventral tegmental area‐parabrachial pigmented nucleus complex) and increased FC in periaqueductal gray. No significant correlations were found between the FC of these brain regions and clinical characteristics or neuropsychological evaluations after Bonferroni correction (p > 0.00016). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that patients with NDPH have abnormal FC of brainstem nuclei involved in the perception and regulation of pain and emotions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Considering the difficulties of the low signal-to-noise ratio in weak radioactive source detections, this study proposes an abandon Gaussian tails method based on the analysis of the characteristic information denoted by the full-energy peak of the gamma spectrum of a gamma-emitting radioactive source. Based on the study of the signal-to-background ratio and the statistical fluctuations in the signal of the weak radioactive source, a factor ζ, incorporating the statistical fluctuations of signal and background and the signal-to-background ratio, is suggested to characterize the sensitivity of a radioactive source detection. When ζ reaches its maximum value, the optimal counting window around the centroid of the full-energy peak can be obtained. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, comparisons between the proposed abandon Gaussian tails, the conventional full-energy counting, and other experiential methods were performed. The results show that the sensitivity can be significantly improved. Further, experiments with different intensity of radiation sources and duplicated experiments were conducted to examine the stability of the proposed method.

Abstract

For photon detection, superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) micro-calorimeters are excellent energy-resolving devices. In this study, we report our recent work in developing Ti-/Au-based TES. The Ti/Au TES devices were designed and implemented with a thickness ratio of 1:1 and different suspended structures using micromachining technology. The characteristics were evaluated and analyzed, including surface morphology, 3D deformation of suspended Ti/Au TES device structure, I–V characteristics, and low-temperature superconductivity. The results showed that the surface of Ti/Au has good homogeneity and the surface roughness of Ti/Au is significantly increased compared with the substrate. The structure of Ti/Au bilayer film significantly affects the deformation of suspended devices, but the deformation does not affect the I–V characteristics of the devices. For devices with the Ti/Au bilayer (150 – m × 150 μm) and beams (100 μ m × 25 μm), the transition temperature (T c) is 253 mK with a width of 6 mK, and the value of the temperature sensitivity α is 95.1.

29. A low-toxicity uranyl-selective-binding linear pentapeptide sequence as a potential uranium decorporation agent.

Abstract

Searching for highly selective, efficient, and low-toxicity chelating agents is central to resolving uranium contamination in vivo . Peptides composed of amino acids exhibit very low toxicity for accumulation in the human body and have been proven effective in chelating actinides within the human body. Herein, we report a rationally designed short phosphorylated peptide sequence PP-B, which exhibits high affinity and selectivity for uranyl compared to other trace elements present in the body (such as Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Co 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Zn 2+ ). The association constant for the peptide-uranyl complex is calculated to be 7.3 ×10 5 M -1 . The result of DFT calculation shows that the phosphate group binds strongly to the UO 2 2+ center, potentially accounting for the peptide's strong affinity towards UO 2 2+ . The results of in vivo uranyl decorporation assays reveal that PP-B has a much lower toxicity and a much higher decorporation efficiency than that of the clinically approved DTPA.
