5. VR-based soundscape evaluation : auralising the sound from audio rendering, reflection modelling to source synthesis in the acoustic environment

Abstract

Soundscape has been growing as a research field associated with acoustics, urban planning, environmental psychology and other disciplines since it was first introduced in the 1960s. To assess soundscapes, subjective validation is frequently integrated with soundscape reproduction. However, the existing soundscape standards do not give clear reproduction specifications to recreate a virtual sound environment. Selecting appropriate audio rendering methods, simulating sound propagation, and synthesising non-point sound sources remain major challenges for researchers. This thesis therefore attempts to give alternative or simplified strategies to reproduce a virtual sound environment by suggesting binaural or monaural audio renderings, reflection modelling during sound propagation, and less synthesis points of non-point sources. To solve these unclear issues, a systematic review of original studies first examines the ecological validity of immersive virtual reality in soundscape evaluation. Through recording and reproducing audio-visual stimuli of sound environments, participants give their subjective responses according to the structured questionnaires. Thus, different audio rendering, reflection modelling, and source synthesis methods are validated by subjective evaluation. The results of this thesis reveal that a rational setup of VR techniques and evaluation methods will be a solid foundation for soundscape evaluation with reliable ecological validity. For soundscape audio rendering, the binaural rendering still dominates the soundscape evaluation compared with the monaural. For sound propagation with consideration of different reflection conditions, fewer orders can be employed during sound reflection to assess different kinds of sounds in outdoor sound environments through VR experiences. The VR experience combining both HMDs and Ambisonics will significantly strengthen our immersion at low orders. For non-point source synthesis, especially line sources, when adequate synthesis points reach the threshold of the minimum audible angle, human ears cannot distinguish the location of the synthesised sound sources in the horizontal plane, thus increasing immersion significantly. These minimum specifications and simplifications refine the understanding of soundscape reproduction, and the findings will be beneficial for researchers and engineers in determining appropriate audio rendering, sound propagation modelling, and non-point source synthesis strategies.

Abstract

Mixed sedimentation is mainly a phenomenon by which siliciclastic and carbonate are mixed under a similar sedimentary environment. The study of the composition of mixed rock can reflect the sedimentary environment. The mixed sediments of the Canglangpu formation in the eastern Sichuan basin are widely developed and exhibit well exploration prospects. In this study, a classification diagram of mixed sediments suitable for the Canglangpu formation was proposed by combining lithologic characteristics with logging data. Based on the observations of typical outcrop profiles, the identification of thin sections, and drilling and geological logging data, a model was established to identify the electrical responses of the mixed sedimentary rocks in the study area. The results show that (1) the Canglangpu formation can be vertically divided into two complete transgression-regression cycles with the lower part mainly consisting of sedimentary carbonate diamictite and the upper part principally composed of clastic diamictite; (2) mixed sediments in the Canglangpu formation can be divided into six classes, namely carbonate sandstone, argillaceous sandstone, sandy carbonate rock, argillaceous carbonate rock, sandy mudstone, and Carbonate mudstone; (3) the sedimentary environment of the Canglangpu formation be divided into (a) mixed sediments in the shore, which include mixed lagoon and mixed tidal flat, (b) mixed sediments in the shallow marine shelf, which includes mixed beach bar, terrigenous detrital mixed shelf, and carbonate mixed shelf; (4) a mixed shore-mixed shelf sedimentary model has been established; it says that the mixed sediments show obvious characteristics of ring-like development around underwater paleo-heights. The formation mechanism of mixed sedimentation in the eastern Sichuan basin is mainly controlled by the change of sedimentary facies belt, and the development intensity is mainly influenced by early tectonic movement and sea-level change.

23. Efficient All-Inorganic Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Enabled by Simultaneous Growth Regulation and Defect Passivation

Abstract

Metal-halide perovskites(MHPs) have attracted widespread attention as the next-generation luminescent materials due to their excellent emission characteristics, such as narrowband emission and tunable color. Compared with hybrid perovskites, all-inorganic perovskites have better thermal and chemical stability and can therefore provide the basis for high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with reasonable operating stability. However, due to the large grain size and relatively poor surface quality of inorganic perovskites, the radiation recombination efficiency is inefficient, leading to a reduced efficiency of LED devices. Here, we employed the additive [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) for a straightforward in situ reaction with three-dimensional (3-D) inorganic perovskite. 2PACz forms a covalent bond with under-coordinated lead atoms on the perovskite surface, effectively passivating surface defects and enhancing radiative recombination efficiency. Simultaneously, crystal growth was controlled to obtain high-quality inorganic perovskite thin films with a smooth surface and small grain size. This approach not only reduces trap density in the perovskite but also maintains excellent charge transport characteristics of 3-D perovskite. Consequently, we fabricated a perovskite light-emitting diode (PeLED) with a maximum brightness of 13 192 cd m−2, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 20.87%, and a half-lifetime of 479 h (at 100 cd m−2).
