The research and application of CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) have gradually emerged in China. However, the vast unconventional oil and gas resources are stored in reservoir pores ranging from several nanometers to several hundred micrometers in size. Additionally, CO2 geological sequestration involves the migration of fluids in tight caprock and target layers, which directly alters the transport and phase behavior of reservoir fluids at different scales. Micro- and nanoscale fluidics technology, with their advantages of in situ visualization, high temperature and pressure resistance, and rapid response, have become a new technical approach to investigate gas–liquid interactions in confined domains and an effective supplement to traditional core displacement experiments. The research progress of micro–nano fluidics visualization technology in various aspects, such as CO2 capture, utilization, and storage, is summarized in this paper, and the future development trends and research directions of micro–nano fluidics technology in the field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are predicted.

Wettability, as a vital tool for analyzing and describing oil flow, plays a significant role in determining oil/water relative permeability, residual oil distribution, and on–site recovery efficiency. Although the contact angle method is widely used for measuring wetting behavior, it is susceptible to the effects of surface roughness, oil–water saturation, and the distribution of mixed wetting within the range of droplet sizes. Additionally, millimeter–scale droplets fail to accurately represent the wetting distribution and the influencing factors at the micro/nano–scale. Therefore, this study presents a comprehensive investigation of the microstructure and wettability of shale samples. The characterization of the samples was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques to gain insights into their microscopic features, surface properties, and wettability. Results demonstrate the following: (1) Quartz and clay minerals tended to exhibit rough surface topography, appearing as darker areas (DA) under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is worth noting that plagioclase minerals exhibited brighter areas (BA) under SEM. (2) An increase in the content of minerals such as quartz and clay minerals was observed to decrease the surface oil wetting behavior. In contrast, plagioclase feldspar exhibited an opposite trend. (3) Based on the adhesive forces of the samples towards oil or water, a wetting index, I, was established to evaluate the wettability of shale at a microscale. The dimensionless contact angle W, obtained by normalizing the contact angle measurement, also consistently indicated oil wetting behavior. (4) By comparing the differences between I and W, it was observed that surface roughness significantly affected the behavior of water droplets. The presence of roughness impeded the contact between the solid and liquid phases, thus influencing the accuracy of the wetting results. Organic matter also plays a significant role in influencing surface wettability, and its distribution within the shale samples can lead to localized variations in wettability.

The translation of discoveries on extracellular vesicle (EV) based cancer biomarkers to personalised precision oncology requires the development of robust, sensitive and specific assays that are amenable to adoption in the clinical laboratory. Whilst a variety of elegant approaches for EV liquid biopsy have been developed, most of them remain as research prototypes due to the requirement of a high level of microfabrication and/or sophisticated instruments. Hence, this study is set to develop a simple DNA aptamer‐enabled and fluorescence polarisation‐based homogenous assay that eliminates the need to separate unbound detection ligands from the bound species for EV detection. High specificity is achieved by immobilising EVs with one set of antibodies and subsequently detecting them with a DNA aptamer targeting a distinct EV biomarker. This two‐pronged strategy ensures the removal of most, if not all, non‐EV substances in the input biofluids, including soluble proteins, protein aggregates or non‐vesicular particles, prior to quantifying biomarker‐positive EVs. A limit of detection of 5.0 × 106 EVs/mL was achieved with a linear quantification range of 5.0 × 108 to 2.0 × 1010 EVs/mL. Facilitated by a multiple parametric analysis strategy, this aptamer‐guided fluorescence polarisation assay was capable of distinguishing EVs from three different types of solid cancer cells based on quantitative differences in the levels of the same sets of biomarkers on EVs. Given the simplicity of the method and its ease of implementation in automated clinical biochemistry analysers, this assay could be exploited for future EV‐based continuous and real‐time monitoring of the emergence of new macro‐ or micro‐metastasis, cancer progression as well as the response to treatment throughout different stages of cancer management in the clinic. Many factors need to be considered in the evaluation of tight conglomerate reservoirs, including the microscopic pore-throat structure, pore connectivity, lithology, porosity, permeability, and clay mineral content. The contents and types of clay minerals reflect the mineral evolution process during the deposition of the reservoir and can reflect the reservoir’s physical properties to a certain extent. In this study, cores from the Baikouquan Formation in Mahu were used to comprehensively analyze the effects of the clay mineral content on the physical properties of a tight conglomerate reservoir, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), casting thin section observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD), interface property testing, high-pressure mercury injection, low temperature N2 adsorption, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-movable fluid saturation testing. The results revealed that differences in different lithologies lead to differences in clay mineral content and pore structure, which in turn lead to differences in porosity and permeability. The interface electrification, adsorption, and specific surface area of the reservoir are positively correlated with the clay mineral content, which is mainly affected by the smectite content. As the clay mineral content increases, the proportion of nanoscale pore throats increases, and the core becomes denser. The saturation of the movable fluid controlled by the >50 nm pore throats in the tight conglomerate ranges from 8.7% to 33.72%, with an average of 20.24%. The clay mineral content, especially the I/S (mixed layer of Illite and montmorillonite) content, is negatively correlated with the movable fluid. In general, the research results clarified the relationship between the lithology and physical properties of clay minerals and the microscopic pore structure of the tight conglomerate reservoirs in the Baikouquan Formation in the Mahu area.

High molecular polymers have been widely studied and applied in the field of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). At present, the focus of research has been changed to the design of polymer networks with unique properties such as anti-temperature and anti-salinity, good injection and so on. Supramolecular polymers have high viscoelasticity as well as excellent temperature, salt resistance and injection properties. Can supramolecular polymers become another material choice for polymer flooding to enhance oil recovery? The present review aims to systematically introduce supramolecular polymers, including its design strategy, interactions and rheological properties, and address three main concerns: (1) Why choose supramolecular polymers? (2) How do we synthesize and characterize supramolecular polymers in the field of oilfield chemistry? (3) What has been the application progress of supramolecular polymers in improving oil recovery? The introduction of a supramolecular interaction system provides a new idea for polymer flooding and opens up a new research direction to improve oil recovery. Aiming at the “reversible dynamic” supramolecular polymers, the supramolecular polymers are compared with the conventional covalent macromolecular polymer networks, and the challenges and future research directions of supramolecular polymers in EOR are discussed. Finally, the author’s viewpoints and perspectives in this emerging field are discussed.

DNA nanotechnology is often used to build various nano-structures for signaling and/or drug delivery, but it essentially suffers from several major limitations, such as a large number of DNA strands and limited targeting ligands. Moreover, there is no report on in vivo two-dimensional DNA arrays because of various technical challenges. By cross-catenating two palindromic DNA rings, herein, we demonstrate a catenane-based grid-patterned periodic DNA monolayer array ([2]GDA) capable of preferentially accumulating in tumor tissues without any targeting ligands, with a thickness equal to the double-helical DNA monolayer (nearly 2 nm). The structural flexibility of [2]GDA enabled it to fold into a spherical object in solution, favoring cellular uptake. Thus, its cellular internalization activity was comparable with that of the commercial lipofectamine 3000. Moreover, [2]GDA retained the structural integrity over 24 h incubation in biological solutions, achieving a 360-fold improvement in in vivo stability. Significantly, anticancer drug-loaded [2]GDA exhibits desirable therapeutic efficacy in tumor-bearing animals without detectable side effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
