Soil–structure interaction (SSI), which characterizes the dynamic interaction between a structure and its surrounding soil, is of great significance to the seismic assessment of structures. Past research endeavors have undertaken analytical, numerical, and experimental studies to gain a thorough understanding of the influences of SSI on the seismic responses of a wide array of structures, including but not limited to nuclear power plants, frame structures, bridges, and spatial structures. Thereinto, large-span spatial structures generally have much more complex configurations, and the influences of SSI may be more pronounced. To this end, this paper aims to provide a state-of-the-art review of the SSI in the seismic assessment of large-span spatial structures. It begins with the modelling of soil medium, followed by the research progress of SSI in terms of numerical simulations and experiments. Subsequently, the focus shifts towards high-lighting advancements in understanding the seismic responses of large-span spatial structures considering SSI. This paper presents the development of membrane structures in China. It begins with a historical review of the early applications of membrane structures in the country, highlighting pivotal events and engineering endeavors that contributed to the development. Subsequently, recent advancements in the realm of membrane structures in China are succinctly summarized. The past decade has witnessed notable progress in the implementation of membrane structures, particularly within expansive stadiums and indoor sports arenas. Additionally, cases exemplifying the diverse applications of membrane structures in various projects are presented. Noteworthy among these are the incorporation of membrane structures in building facades, suspended ceilings for indoor spaces, and the utilization of ETFT membrane structures. Furthermore, applications of air-supported membrane structures are explored, especially in the areas of sports facilities and environmental protections. Technical standards and specifications that have played an important guiding role in the development of membrane structures in China are introduced in the last. Finally, 8 issues for the future research and development of membrane structures are pointed out in the conclusion part. This article is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Tien Lan, widely recognized as one of the key founders and pioneers of modern spatial structures in China. In addition to his significant contributions in research and design, this paper explores Professor Lan's social initiatives and accomplishments, such as founding committees and associations related to spatial structures, organizing conferences, and contributing to the development of specifications for design and construction. In order to investigate the influence of substructures on the seismic performance of the suspen-dome structure, taking the suspen-dome roof structure of the Lanzhou Olympic sports centre complex as the prototype, a method that replaces complex concrete substructures of the prototype structure with steel substructures in shaking table tests was proposed and a scale model considering substructures was established. First, the natural frequencies of the test model were compared with the modal analysis results of the prototype structure considering the scale ratio. Then, an integral numerical model considering substructures was established using Abaqus – the results of modal analysis and dynamic time history analysis were compared with the test results. Finally, two simplified numerical models with boundary conditions of fixed bearings and three-directional hinged bearings were established. The seismic performances of simplified models and the integral model were compared. It is observed that the method of considering complex concrete substructures of the prototype structure in the shaking table test is accurate and effective. In addition, the numerical model and the modelling method are correct. Moreover, the substructure has a significant impact on the seismic performance of the suspen-dome. This article is a preface for a special issue of the International Journal of Space Structures (IJSS) dedicated to the memory of Professor Tien T. Lan, a pioneer of spatial structure in China who passed away in 2022. The special issue will consist of two parts: memory articles and technical papers. The memory articles will be written by individuals who had a close relationship with Professor Lan and will discuss his international contributions and remarkable personality. The technical papers will focus on the advances of spatial structures in China over the past two decades.
