Abstract

Identifying Galactic PeVatrons (PeV particle accelerators) from ultrahigh-energy (UHE, >100 TeV) γ -ray sources plays a crucial role in revealing the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The UHE source 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is suggested to be associated with HESS J1858+020, which may be attributed to the possible PeVatron candidate supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6−0.4 or H ii region G35.6−0.5. We perform detailed analysis on the very-high-energy and UHE γ -ray emissions toward this region with data from the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is detected with a significance of 11.6 σ above 100 TeV, indicating the presence of a PeVatron. It has an extent of ∼0 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode{x000B0}}$ 18 with a power-law (PL) spectral index of ∼2.5 at 1–25 TeV and pointlike emission with a PL spectral index of ∼3.2 above 25 TeV. Using archival CO and H i data, we identify some molecular and atomic clouds that may be associated with the TeV γ -ray emissions. Our modeling indicates that the TeV γ -ray emissions are unlikely to arise from clouds illuminated by the protons that escaped from SNR G35.6−0.4. In the scenario in which H ii region G35.6−0.5 could accelerate particles to the UHE band, the observed GeV–TeV γ -ray emission could be well explained by a hadronic model with a PL spectral index of ∼2.0 and cutoff energy of ∼450 TeV. However, an origin in an evolved pulsar wind nebula cannot be ruled out.

Abstract

To investigate the perforating characteristics of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragments against thin steel target, ballistic experiments were carried out to measure ballistic the limit velocities of fragments perforating against different thicknesses of targets. The fragments were driven by a 57 mm one-stage light gas gun to impact the thin steel target. The numerical model of Zr-based bulk metallic glass fragments perforating against thin steel target was established using Autodyn2D commercial software, and the perforating process and perforating mechanism were analyzed by numerical simulation. The semi-empirical model to predict the ballistic limit velocity was fitted. An energy model for calculating the residual velocity of a fragment was derived based on the conservation of energy. The theoretical results of the semi-empirical model and the energy model are in good agreement with experiment results and simulation results. And the energy model has good applicability without fitting the parameters for different target thicknesses.

3. Enhanced detection of African swine fever virus in samples with low viral load using digital PCR technology

Abstract

Detection of low viral load samples has long been a challenge for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control. This study aimed to compare the detection efficacy of droplet digital PCR(ddPCR) and quantitative PCR(qPCR) for African swine fever virus (ASFV) at different viral loads, with a focus on assessing the accuracy of ddPCR in detecting low viral load samples. The results revealed that ddPCR had a detection limit of 1.97 (95% CI 1.48 – 4.12) copies/reaction and was 18.99 times more sensitive than qPCR (detection limit: 37.42, 95% CI 29.56 – 69.87 copies/reaction). In the quantification of high, medium, and low viral load samples, ddPCR showed superior stability with lower intra- (2.06% – 7.58%) and inter-assay (3.83% – 7.50%) coefficients of variation than those of qPCR (intra-assay: 8.08%–29.86%; inter-assay: 9.27%–34.58%). Bland-Altman analysis indicated acceptable consistency between ddPCR and qPCR for high and medium viral load samples; however, discrepancies were observed for low viral load samples, where two samples (2/24, 8.33%) exhibited deviations beyond the acceptable range (−46.18 copies/reaction). Moreover, ddPCR demonstrated better performance in detecting ASFV in clinical samples from asymptomatic pigs and environmental samples, with qPCR showing false negative rates of 7.69% (2/26) and 27.27% (12/44), respectively. McNemar analysis revealed significant differences between the two methods (P = 0.000) for samples with a viral load

Abstract

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

Abstract

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

Abstract

The interplay between superconductivity and magnetism is an important subject in condensed matter physics. EuFe _2 As _2 -based iron pnictides could offer an interesting plateau to study their relationship that has attracted considerable attention. So far, two magnetic phase transitions were observed in EuFe _2 As _2 -based crystal, which were deemed to originate from the itinerant Fe moments (~190 K) and the localized Eu ^2+ moments (~19 K), respectively. Here, we systematically studied the heat capacity for the EuFe _2 (As $ _{1-x}$ P _x ) _2 crystals with x = 0.21 (optimally doped) and x = 0.29 (overdoped). We have found two new magnetic orders in the superconducting state (ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 K) in the optimally doped crystal. As more P was introduced into the As site, one of the magnetic orders becomes absent in the overdoped crystal. Additionally, we observed strong field and orientation dependence in heat capacity. The present findings in EuFe _2 (As $ _{1-x}$ P _x ) _2 have detected the new low-temperature magnetic orders, which may originate from the localized Eu ^2+ spins order or the spin reorientation.

Abstract

We studied the 2018 outburst of the black hole transient H 1743 − 322 with a series of Insight-HXMT, NICER, and NuSTAR observations, covering the 1–120 keV band. With our broad-band X-ray spectral modelling, we confirm that the source remained in the low/hard state throughout the month-long outburst, although it became marginally softer at peak flux. We detected Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and followed the evolution of their properties. The QPO frequency increased from ∼0.1 to ∼0.4 Hz during the rising phase of the outburst and decreased again in the decline. Continuum X-ray flux, power-law photon index, QPO frequency, and QPO root-mean-square amplitude were positively correlated. The QPO amplitude was slightly higher in the soft X-ray band (typical values of 12–16 per cent, compared with 8–10 per cent in the hard band). Our spectral-timing results shed light on the initial rising phase in the low/hard state, which has rarely been monitored with such high cadence, time resolution, and broad-band coverage. Combining spectral and timing properties, we find that ‘failed’ (hard state only) and ‘successful’ outbursts follow the same initial evolutionary track, although the former class of outburst never reaches the threshold for a transition to softer (thermally dominated) accretion regimes.

Abstract

In this paper, the higher-order localized waves for the coupled mixed derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation are investigated using generalized Darboux transformation. On the basis of seed solutions and a Lax pair, the first- and second-order localized wave solutions are derived from the Nth-order iteration formulas of generalized Darboux transformation. Then, the dynamics of the localized waves are analyzed and displayed via numerical simulation. It is found that the second-order rouge wave split into three first-order rogue waves due to the influence of the separation function. In addition, a series of novel dynamic evolution plots exhibit that rogue waves coexist with dark-bright solitons and breathers.

Abstract

All-solid-state battery (ASSB) has attracted much attention since it is a potential candidate to solve the safety issue of batteries. However, the rigid contact between the electrode and electrolyte limits the electrochemical performance of ASSB. It is therefore necessary to modify the electrode–electrolyte interface to decrease the interfacial resistance. Herein, we use the aerosol deposition (AD) method to directly deposit the electrode, Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP), on the Na3Zr2Si2PO[Formula: see text] (NZSP) electrolyte at room temperature. The electrolyte pellet coated with NVP demonstrates a negligible interfacial resistance and low total resistivity of about 1831.64 [Formula: see text] cm[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance in terms of cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge of the ASSB consisting of NVP ∣ NZSP ∣ sodium (Na) metal is also investigated.

Abstract

In this paper, the nonlinear and dual-parameter chaotic vibrations are investigated for the blisk structure with the lumped parameter model under combined the aerodynamic force and varying rotating speed. The varying rotating speed and aerodynamic force are respectively simplified to the parametric and external excitations. The nonlinear governing equations of motion for the rotating blisk are established by using Hamilton’s principle. The free vibration and mode localization phenomena are studied for the tuning and mistuning blisks. Due to the mistuning, the periodic characteristics of the blisk structure are destroyed and uniform distribution of the energy is broken. It is found that there is a positive correlation between the mistuning variable and mode localization factor to exhibit the large vibration of the blisk in a certain region. The method of multiple scales is applied to derive four-dimensional averaged equations of the blisk under 1:1 internal and principal parametric resonances. The amplitude-frequency response curves of the blisk are studied, which illustrate the influence of different parameters on the bandwidth and vibration amplitudes of the blisk. Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, waveforms and Poincare maps are depicted. The dual-parameter Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagrams of the blisk reveal the paths leading to the chaos. The influences of different parameters on the bifurcation and chaotic vibrations are analyzed. The numerical results demonstrate that the parametric and external excitations, rotating speed and damping determine the occurrence of the chaotic vibrations and paths leading to the chaotic vibrations in the blisk.

Abstract

The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 105 and 109 GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract

Higher-order localized waves for a variable-coefficient coupled Hirota equation describes the vector optical pulses in inhomogeneous optical fiber and are investigated via generalized Darboux transformation in this work. Based on its Lax pair and seed solutions, the localized wave solutions are calculated, evolution plots are constructed, and the dynamics of the obtained localized waves are analyzed through numerical simulation. It is observed that the first- and second-order localized waves interact with dark-bright solitons or breathers, and the functions α(t), β(t), and δ(t) determine the propagation shape of the localized waves. The presented results contribute to enriching the dynamics of localized waves in inhomogeneous optical fiber. Abstract

In this report, we investigated a new rare earth based one-dimensional Ising spin chain magnet~\DNG~by means of magnetization, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction measurements. Due to the crystalline electrical field splitting, the magnetic Dy ions share an Ising like ground doublet state. Owning to the local point symmetry, these Ising moments form into two canted magnetic sublattices, which were further confirmed by the angle-dependent magnetization measurement. In zero fields, two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions were found at temperatures $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=6~\rm K$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=5~\rm K$, respectively. Only part of the moments are statically ordered in this intermediate state between $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$. Powder neutron diffraction experiments at different temperatures were performed as well. An incommensurate magnetic propagation vector of $\mathbf{k_{\rm m}}=(0.5,0.4,0.5)$ was identified. The refined spin configurations through the irreducible representation analysis confirmed that these Ising spins are canted in the crystal $ab$~plane., 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Nanotwinned metals have demonstrated the capacity for concomitant high strength and ductility. However, metals with high stacking fault energies, such as aluminum (Al), have a low propensity for twin formation. Here, we show the fabrication of supersaturated solid-solution Al–Zr alloys with a high density of growth twins. Incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) are strong barriers to dislocation motion, while mobile partial dislocations promote plasticity. These deformable nanotwinned Al–Zr alloys reach a flow stress of ∼1 GPa, as demonstrated using in situ micropillar compression tests. Density functional theory calculations uncover the role Zr solute plays in the formation and deformation of the nanotwinned microstructure. This study features a strategy for incorporating ITBs and 9R phase into Al alloys for simultaneous benefits to strength and deformability.

27. A fixed-mix stochastic fractional programming method for optimizing agricultural irrigation and hydropower generation in Central Asia

Abstract

In this study, a fixed-mix stochastic fractional programming (FSFP) method is developed for balancing the water-allocation conflict between upstream hydropower generation and downstream agricultural irrigation. FSFP has advantages in dealing with ratio-objective problem under uncertainty, reflecting the dynamic and stochastic characteristics over a long-term planning context, as well as analyzing interrelationships between system efficiency and violation risk of water-allocation target. Then, FSFP is firstly applied to Tuyamuyun reservoir in the lower reach of Amu Darya River basin (Central Asia), where multiple scenarios based on different hydropower-generation targets and inflow levels are examined for identifying the complex relationship between hydropower generation and crop irrigation. Major findings and managerial insights can be summarized as: (i) with the reduction of reservoir inflow, water allocation for downstream agricultural irrigation would decrease by 30.4% once the minimum demand is satisfied, and hydropower generation should be higher priority for pursuing higher marginal benefit; (ii) with the shrinking water supply and rising hydropower-generation target, cotton planting should be firstly restrained due to its high water demand and grape planting is encouraged; (iii) under extreme water scarcity (i.e., low and very-low inflow levels), low-level hydropower generation target (i.e., α = 0.45) is desired for meeting the food requirement in the study basin; (iv) for alleviating the water shortage during dry seasons, it is recommended that water storage should be conducted in autumn and winter, and water release for crop irrigation should be implemented during spring and summer. These findings can help managers identify sustainable water-allocation schemes for agricultural irrigation and hydropower generation against water shortage, environmental destruction and energy insecurity in arid regions.

Abstract

Non-infectious inflammation has been proposed as a major contributor to epidural-related maternal fever. We hypothesized that maternal serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) count at hospital admission predict intrapartum maternal fever.A retrospective case-control study of low-risk women admitted for vaginal deliveries at a tertiary hospital in 2019. Women with a singleton pregnancy at term and a cephalic presentation who received epidural labor analgesia and developed intrapartum fever (≥38.0°C) were included. Controls matched by parity and gestational age received epidural analgesia without fever. The associations of maternal CRP level and WBC count on admission with fever were evaluated by a multivariable logistic regression analysis. The predictive performances of both markers for fever were evaluated by receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves.Overall, 687 women met the inclusion criteria and 687 served as controls. The WBC count on admission was higher in febrile than in afebrile women (8.7 vs. 8.5 × 10Maternal serum CRP and WBC at hospital admission do not predict intrapartum fever in women having epidural labor analgesia at term.
