Abstract

Polytypism of incommensurately modulated structures was hitherto unobserved. Here, we found the phenomenon in simple halogen systems of bromine and iodine upon molecular dissociation in the solids under pressure. Single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction in laser heated diamond anvil cells pressurised up to 112 GPa revealed a number of allotropes of bromine and iodine including polytypes of Br-III{\gamma} (Fmmm(00{\gamma})s00) with {\gamma} varying within 0.18 to 0.3.

Abstract

More than thirty years ago, carbon nitrides featuring 3D frameworks of tetrahedral CN4 units were identified as one of the great aspirations of materials science, expected to have a hardness greater than or comparable to diamond. Since then, no unambiguous experimental evidence of their existence has been delivered. Here, we report the high-pressure high-temperature synthesis of the long-sought-after covalent carbon nitrides, tI14-C3N4, hP126-C3N4, and tI24-CN2, in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Their structures were solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In these solids, carbon atoms, all sp3-hybridized, and nitrogen atoms are fully saturated, forming four and three covalent bonds, respectively, leading to three-dimensional arrangements of corner-sharing CN4 tetrahedra. These carbon nitrides are ultra-incompressible, with hP126-C3N4 and tI24-CN2 even rivalling diamond's incompressibility, and superhard. These novel compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions in crystalline form and chemically stable in air. Being wide-band gap semiconductors with intriguing features in their electronic structure, they are expected to exhibit multiple exceptional functionalities besides their mechanical properties, opening new perspectives for materials science.

Abstract

Non-metal nitrides are an exciting field of chemistry, featuring a significant number of compounds that can possess outstanding material properties. This characteristic relies on maximizing the number of strong covalent bonds, with crosslinked XN6 octahedra frameworks being particularly intriguing. In this study, the phosphorus-nitrogen system was studied up to 137 GPa in laser-heated diamond anvil cells and three previously unobserved phases were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. Delta-P3N5 and PN2 were found to form at 72 and 134 GPa, respectively, and both feature dense 3D networks of the so far elusive PN6 units. The two are ultra-incompressible, having a bulk modulus of K0 = 322 GPa for delta-P3N5 and K0 = 339 GPa for PN2. Upon decompression below 7 GPa, delta-P3N5 undergoes a transformation into a novel alpha'-P3N5 solid, stable at ambient conditions, that has a unique structure type based on PN4 tetrahedra. The formation of alpha'-P3N5 underlines that a phase space otherwise inaccessible can be explored through high-pressure formed phases.

Abstract

Recent high-pressure synthesis of pentazolates and subsequent stabilization of the aromatic [N5]- anion at atmospheric pressure had an immense impact on nitrogen chemistry. Here, we present the first synthesis of an aromatic hexazine [N6]4- anion realized in high-pressure potassium nitride K9N56 at 46 and 61 GPa. The extremely complex structure of K9N56 was solved based on synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and corroborated by density functional theory calculations. This result resolves a long-standing question of the aromatic hexazine stability and the possibility of its synthesis.

Abstract

Electroreductive cross-electrophile coupling has emerged as a powerful and efficient method for constructing challenging C–C or C–X bonds, providing several advantages including highly efficient electron transfer, tunable reducing potential, direct electricity-activation of substrates and good scalability. In electroreductive cross-electrophile coupling, a high loading of a transition metal catalyst is required to facilitate the transfer of electrons from the cathode to organic halides, making it unsuitable for sensitive organic halides such as chloroformates. As a result, the electroreductive XEC of readily accessible chloroformates with alkyl halides for ester synthesis remains a largely unmet challenge. In this work, catalyst-free electrochemically driven cross-electrophile esterification of alkyl halides has been developed. A wide range of 2-phenylacetic esters which represent an important class of molecules in synthetic and medicinal chemistry are accessed from simple and cheap alkyl halides and alkyl chloroformates under mild reaction conditions. Various functional groups were well tolerated, affording up to 98% yields. This protocol would contribute a lot for the further development of electrochemically driven cross-electrophile coupling. Abstract

Here, we present the synthesis of a novel quaternary compound, iodide carbonate Na5(CO3)2I, at 18(1) and 25.1(5) GPa in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction provides accurate structural data for Na5(CO3)2I and shows that the structure of the material can be described as built of INa8 square prisms, distorted NaO6 octahedra, and trigonal planar CO32− units. Decompression experiments show that the novel iodide carbonate is recoverable in the N2 atmosphere to ambient conditions. Our ab initio calculations agree well with the experimental structural data, provide the equation of state, and shed light on the chemical bonding and electronic properties of the new compound. Abstract

With the increasing incidence of oral cancer in the world, it has become a hotspot to explore the pathogenesis and prevention of oral cancer. It has been proved there is a strong link between periodontal pathogens and oral cancer. However, the specific molecular and cellular pathogenic mechanisms remain to be further elucidated. Emerging evidence suggests that periodontal pathogens‐induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) is closely related to the progression of oral cancer. Cells undergoing EMT showed increased motility, aggressiveness and stemness, which provide a pro‐tumour environment and promote malignant metastasis of oral cancer. Plenty of studies proposed periodontal pathogens promote carcinogenesis via EMT. In the current review, we discussed the association between the development of oral cancer and periodontal pathogens, and summarized various mechanisms of EMT caused by periodontal pathogens, which are supposed to play an important role in oral cancer, to provide targets for future research in the fight against oral cancer. Abstract

A series of isostructural Ln3O2(CN3) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln3O2(CN3) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN35− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln3O2(CN3) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln3O2(CN3) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. Abstract

Hand gesture recognition is an essential Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) mechanism for users to control smart devices. While traditional device-based methods support acceptable recognition performance, the recent advance in wireless sensing could enable device-free hand gesture recognition. However, two severe limitations are serious environmental interference and high-cost hardware, which hamper wide deployment. This paper proposes the novel system TaGesture, which employs an inaudible acoustic signal to realize device-free and training-free hand gesture recognition with a commercial speaker and microphone array. We address unique technical challenges, such as proposing a novel acoustic hand-tracking-smoothing algorithm with an Interaction Multiple Model (IMM) Kalman Filter to address the issue of localization angle ambiguity, and designing a classification algorithm to realize acoustic-based hand gesture recognition without training. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to evaluate TaGesture. Results show that it can achieve a total accuracy of 97.5% for acoustic-based hand gesture recognition, and support the furthest sensing range of up to 3 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we present the synthesis of three sodium halides with unpredicted chemical compositions and structures (tP10-Na$_2$Cl$_3$, hP18-Na$_4$Cl$_5$, and hP18-Na$_4$Br$_5$), a series of isostructural cubic cP8-AX$_3$ halides (NaCl$_3$, KCl$_3$, NaBr$_3$, and KBr$_3$), and a trigonal potassium chloride (hP24-KCl$_3$). The high-pressure syntheses were realized at 41–80 GPa in diamond anvil cells laser-heated at about 2000 K. Single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) provided the first accurate structural data for the symmetric trichloride Cl3– anion in hP24-KCl3 and revealed the existence of two different types of infinite linear polyhalogen chains, [Cl]$_∞$$^{n–}$ and [Br]$_∞$$^{n–}$, in the structures of cP8-AX$_3$ compounds and in hP18-Na$_4$Cl$_5$ and hP18-Na$_4$Br$_5$. In Na$_4$Cl$_5$ and Na$_4$Br$_5$, we found unusually short, likely pressure-stabilized, contacts between sodium cations. Abstract

Physical review / B 107(1), 014103 (2023). doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.107.014103, A novel high-pressure yttrium allotrope, $hP3$-Y (space group $P6/mmm$), was synthesized in a multi-anvil press at 20 GPa and 2000 K which is recoverable to ambient conditions. Its relative stability and electronic properties were investigated using density functional theory calculations. A $hP3$-Y derivative hydride, $hP3-YHx$, with a variable hydrogen content ($x = 2.8$, 3, 2.4), was synthesized in diamond anvil cells by the direct reaction of yttrium with paraffin oil, hydrogen gas, and ammonia borane upon laser heating to ~3000 K at 51, 45 and 38 GPa, respectively. Room-temperature decompression leads to gradual reduction and eventually the complete loss of hydrogen at ambient conditions. Isostructural $hP3-NdHx$ and $hP3-GdHx$ hydrides were synthesized from Nd and Gd metals and paraffin oil, suggesting that the $hP3$-Y structure type may be common for rare-earth elements. Abstract

Simple Summary: In this paper, two new genera with two new species of Dermaptera are described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China. The discovery of these two new species enriches the comparatively meagre fossil record of Dermaptera, particularly from the Middle Jurassic. The description of Applanatiforceps angustus is another brick laid in the foundation of protodiplatyid diversity, and the new genus Ekpagloderma gracilentum highlights the diversity of cercal forms among Aglyptodermatinae and the remarkable homogeneity of the general morphology of groups within this clade. Two new genera and species of Dermaptera are described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China: Applanatiforceps angustus gen. et sp. nov. in the archidermapteran family Protodiplatyidae, and Ekpagloderma gracilentum gen et sp. nov. in the eodermapteran family Semenoviolidae. Applanatiforceps shares the typical characters of the extinct suborder Archidermaptera (e.g., pentamerous meta tarsi, filiform and multimerous cerci) and externalized ovipositor. The family identity of the Protodiplatyidae can be further distinguished by comparing this new genus with other genera of the Protodiplatyidae. As a result of its large compound eyes, tegmina without venation, body sparsely setose, legs rather short and slender, and shape of the veinless tegmina, Ekpagloderma is classified in the subfamily Aglyptodermatinae. Ekpagloderma not only has the typical features of the Aglyptodermatinae, but also exhibits a more primitive slender segmented cerci, which is different from all other genera of Eodermaptera. In fact, the diversity of Eodermaptera as known today indicates some of the challenges in understanding the suborder and whether or not it is monophyletic as historically construed, or if the separation of Turanodermaptera is justified. Abstract

Chemistry - a European journal 28(62), e202201998 (2022). doi:10.1002/chem.202201998, Non-metal nitrides are an exciting field of chemistry, featuring a significant number of compounds that can possess outstanding material properties. These properties mainly rely on maximizing the number of strong covalent bonds, with crosslinked XN$_6$ octahedra frameworks being particularly attractive. In this study, the phosphorus–nitrogen system was studied up to 137 GPa in laser-heated diamond anvil cells, and three previously unobserved phases were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. $δ$-P$_3$N$_5$ and PN$_2$ were found to form at 72 and 134 GPa, respectively, and both feature dense 3D networks of the so far elusive PN$_6$ units. The two compounds are ultra-incompressible, having a bulk modulus of $K_0$=322 GPa for $δ$-P$_3$N$_5$ and 339 GPa for PN$_2$. Upon decompression below 7 GPa, $δ$-P$_3$N$_5$ undergoes a transformation into a novel $α′$-P$_3$N$_5$ solid, stable at ambient conditions, that has a unique structure type based on PN4 tetrahedra.
