The critical rod position search has been one of the issues in the Monte Carlo (MC) reactor analysis. This paper proposes a practical and simple approach for the critical rod position search based on the neutron balance equation and the monotonic relation between the control rod absorption rate and the total rod insertion length. The proposed method was implemented in an inline manner within the McCARD, the MC reactor design code, so that the critical rod position is calculated and updated for each fission source iteration. The numerical results in a typical fast reactor problem demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method in the critical rod position search calculation. Furthermore, the cycle depletion calculation was performed to show the capability of the McCARD to simulate the rodded operation condition. By addressing the critical rod position search problem through the neutron balance approach, the applicability of the MC code in the advanced reactor design will be expanded.

One of the issues in the development of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) using transuranic (TRU) metallic fuel is the absence of criticality benchmark experiment that faithfully mocks up the nuclear characteristics of the target design for validation of the reactor core design code and its uncertainty quantification (UQ). This study aims to quantify the criticality uncertainty of a typical TRU burner with metallic fuel by using the standard upper safety limit (USL) estimation framework based on the similarity analysis of existing benchmark experiments but elaborated in two aspects:1) application of two-sided rather than one-sided tolerance interval and 2) inclusion of additional uncertainty to account for fission products and minor actinides not included in the benchmark experiments. To conduct the similarity analysis and evaluate the nuclear-data induced uncertainty, existing, well-verified computing codes were integrated, including the nuclear data sampling code SANDY, the nuclear data processing code NJOY, and the continuous-energy Monte Carlo code McCARD. Finally, using the SFR benchmark database comprising both publicly available and proprietary benchmark experiments, the criticality uncertainty of the TRU core model with metallic fuel was evaluated.

This paper presents a high performance burnable absorber named as CIMBA (Cylindrically Inserted and Mechanically Separated Burnable Absorber) for the soluble-boron-free SMR. The CIMBA is the cylindrical gadolinia inserted into the annular fuel pellets. Although the CIMBA utilizes the spatial self-shielding effect of the fuel material, a large reactivity upswing occurs when the gadolinia is depleted. To minimize the reactivity swing of the CIMBA-loaded FA, two approaches were investigated. One is controlling the spatial self-shielding effect of the CIMBA as burnup proceeds by a multi-layered structure of the CIMBA (ML-CIMBA) and the other is the mixed-loading of two different types of CIMBA (MIX-CIMBA). Both approaches show promising performances to minimize the reactivity swing, where the MIX-CIMBA is more preferable due to its simpler fabrication process. In conclusion, the MIX-CIMBA is expected to accelerate the commercialization of the CIMBA and can be used to achieve an optimal soluble-boron-free SMR core design.

KHNP had licensed Dynamic Control rod Reactivity Measurement (DCRM) method using detector current signals of PWRs in 2006. The method has been applied to all PWRs in Korea for about 15 years successfully. However, the original method was inapplicable to PWRs using low-sensitivity integral fission chamber as ex-core detectors because of their pulse pile-up and the nonlinearity of the mean-square voltage at low power region. Therefore, to overcome this disadvantage, a modified method, DCRM-EK, was developed using kinetics behavior after equilibrium condition where the pulse counts maintain the maximum value before pulse pile-up. Overall measurement, analysis procedure, and related computer codes were changed slightly to reflect the site test condition. The new method was applied to a total of 15 control rods of 1000 MWe and 1400 MWe PWRs in Korea with worths in the range of 200 pcm–1200 pcm. The results show the average difference of -0.4% and the maximum difference of 7.1% compared to the design values. Therefore, the new DCRM-EK will be applied to PWRs using low sensitivity integral fission chambers, and also can replace the original DCRM when the evaluation fails by big noises present in current or voltage signals of uncompensated/compensated ion chambers.
