Dysfunction of the intestinal mucosa is a significant pathophysiological mechanism and clinical manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, current therapies for IBD primarily focus on suppressing inflammation, and no disease-modifying treatments specifically target the epithelial barrier. Given the side effects associated with chronic immunotherapy, effective alternative therapies that promote mucosal healing are highly attractive. In this review, we examined the function of intestinal epithelial barrier function and the mechanisms of behind its disruption in IBD. We illustrated the complex process of intestinal mucosal healing and proposed therapeutic approaches to promote mucosal healing strategies in IBD. These included the application of stem cell transplantation and organ-like tissue engineering approaches to generate new intestinal tissue. All samples were screened by cluster sampling among those who underwent tests of sex hormones at Beijing Jingcheng Skin Hospital from July 2021 to June 2022. A gender stratified analysis was performed to classify acne grades I–IV. Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between age, sex hormones, ratio of androgen to estrogen and acne grades, with multinomial logistic regression to analyze the association of sex hormones with acne grades in patients with acne.Results: (1) The testosterone levels were mostly within normal reference values for both males and females with varying degrees of acne. For females, the serum follicle-stimulating hormone, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and ratio of androgen to estrogen were significantly different between acne grades. For males, there were significant differences in serum estradiol, testosterone, and ratio of androgen to estrogen across acne grades. (2) The acne grade was negatively correlated with estradiol and positively correlated with the ratio of androgen to estrogen; the female acne grade was also negatively correlated with age and progesterone, but positively correlated with follicle-stimulating hormone. (3) Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the ratio of androgen to estrogen was independently correlated with the grade of acne and that acne grade worsened as the ratio increased.Conclusion: The increase in the ratio of androgen to estrogen may aggravate the acne grade in patients with acne vulgaris.Keywords: acne vulgaris, sex hormones, testosterone, estradiol, ratio of androgen to estrogen

Training (70%) and validation (30%) sets were created by random allocation of data, and a new nomogram model was developed. The model’s discrimination and calibration were measured by calculating the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) and creating calibration charts. The performance of the nomogram model was compared with that of the Prediction for ASCVD Risk in China (China-PAR) and Framingham models by decision curve analysis. An optimal cutoff point for the risk score in the training set was computed to stratify patients.Results: In the nomogram model, the AUCs for predicting CHD at 5, 7 and 9 years in the training set were 0.706 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.649– 0.763), 0.703 (95% CI 0.655– 0.751) and 0.669 (95% CI 0.593– 0.744), respectively. The respective AUCs were 0.682 (95% CI 0.607– 0.758), 0.689 (95% CI 0.618– 0.760) and 0.664 (95% CI 0.539– 0.789) in the validation set. The calibration chart showed that the predicted events from the nomogram score were close to the observed events. Decision curve analysis indicated that the nomogram score was slightly better than the Prediction for ASCVD Risk in China (China-PAR) and Framingham models for predicting the risk of CHD in snorers with hypertension. A cutoff point was identified for being CHD-free (a nomogram score of ≤ 121), which could be helpful for the early identification of individuals at high-risk of CHD.Conclusion: The nomogram score predicts the risk probability of CHD in snorers with hypertension at 5, 7 and 9 years, and shows good capability in terms of discrimination and calibration. BTKi was administered to patients with newly diagnosed, relapsed, refractory primary PCNSL and high-risk/refractory systemic DLBCL, and the effectiveness and PFS were evaluated. Epsilon toxin (ETX), a potential agent of biological and toxic warfare, causes the death of many ruminants and threatens human health. It is crucial to understand the toxic mechanism of such a highly lethal and rapid course toxin. In this study, we detected the effects of ETX on the proteome and phosphoproteome of MDCK cells after 10 min and 30 min. A total of 44 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and 588 differentially phosphorylated proteins (DPPs) were screened in the 10 min group, while 73 DEPs and 489 DPPs were screened in the 30 min group. ETX-induced proteins and phosphorylated proteins were mainly located in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and mitochondria, and their enrichment pathways were related to transcription and translation, virus infection, and intercellular junction. Meanwhile, the protein-protein interaction network screened out several hub proteins, including SRSF1/2/6/7/11, SF3B1/2, NOP14/56, ANLN, GTPBP4, THOC2, and RRP1B. Almost all of these proteins were present in the spliceosome pathway, indicating that the spliceosome pathway is involved in ETX-induced cell death. Next, we used RNAi lentiviruses and inhibitors of several key proteins to verify whether these proteins play a critical role. The results confirmed that SRSF1, SF3B2, and THOC2 were the key proteins involved in the cytotoxic effect of ETX. In addition, we found that the common upstream kinase of these key proteins was SRPK1, and a reduction in the level of SRPK1 could also reduce ETX-induced cell death. This result was consistent with the phosphorylated proteomics analysis. In summary, our study demonstrated that ETX induces phosphorylation of SRSF1, SF3B2, THOC2, and SRPK1 proteins on the spliceosome pathway, which inhibits normal splicing of mRNA and leads to cell death.

Day-Night imaging technology that obtains full-color and infrared images has great market demands for security monitoring and autonomous driving. The current mainstream solution relies on wide-spectrum silicon photodetectors combined with Infrared Cutfilter Removal, which increases complexity and failure rate. Here, we address these challenges by employing a perovskite photodetector based on Pb-Sn alloyed single crystal with a vertical bandgap-graded structure that presents variable-spectrum responses at different biases and extends the infrared detection range close to 1100 nm. Taking advantage of the Pb-Sn gradients in mobility and built-in field, the perovskite photodetector shows a large linear dynamic range of 177 dB. In addition, the optoelectronic characteristics feature long-term operational stability over a year. We further develop an imaging module prototype without Infrared Cutfilter Removal that exhibits excellent color fidelity with RGB color differences ranging from 0.48 to 2.46 under infrared interference and provides over 26-bit grayscale resolution in infrared imaging., (© 2024. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), the most common non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), is substantially heterogeneous. Approximately 5-10% of DLBCLs express CD5, which makes CD5 + DLBCL a rare subgroup. Different studies have shown that CD5 + DLBCL patients are often older and female and have higher lactate dehydrogenase levels, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status > 1, and higher International Prognostic Index (IPI) scores. Moreover, patients often have advanced stage disease with a high incidence of central nervous system (CNS) relapse and bone marrow involvement. CD5 + DLBCL cells are more likely to express MYC, BCL-2, and MUM-1, less likely to express CD10, and most belong to the activated B-cell-like (ABC) subtype. The potential mechanisms underlying the poor prognosis of CD5 + DLBCL patients may be related to CD5-mediated B-cell receptor (BCR)-dependent and -independent pathways. The efficacy of the traditional rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) regimen is unsatisfactory in CD5 + DLBCL patients. Despite supporting evidence from retrospective studies, it is currently unclear whether dose-adjusted etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin plus rituximab (DA-EPOCH-R) can improve outcomes in this population. Several new drugs, such as Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKi), BCL-2 inhibitors, and CXCR4 antagonists, as well as immunotherapy, may help to improve the prognosis of CD5 + DLBCL patients, but additional clinical explorations are needed to determine the optimal therapeutic strategy for this disease., (© 2024. Cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) is a multiligand receptor with important roles in lipid metabolism, angiogenesis and innate immunity, and its diverse effects may depend on the binding of specific ligands in different contexts. CD36 is expressed not only on immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) but also on some hematopoietic cells. CD36 is associated with the growth, metastasis and drug resistance in some hematologic tumors, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome. Currently, some targeted therapeutic agents against CD36 have been developed, such as anti-CD36 antibodies, CD36 antagonists (small molecules) and CD36 expression inhibitors. This paper not only innovatively addresses the role of CD36 in some hematopoietic cells, such as erythrocytes, hematopoietic stem cells and platelets, but also pays special attention to the role of CD36 in the development of hematologic tumors, and suggests that CD36 may be a potential cancer therapeutic target in hematologic tumors.

The majority of rod-shaped and some filamentous plant viruses encode a cysteine-rich protein (CRP) that functions in viral virulence; however, the roles of these CRPs in viral infection remain largely unknown. Here, we used barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) as a model to investigate the essential role of its CRP in virus morphogenesis. The CRP protein γb directly interacts with BSMV coat protein (CP), the mutations either on the His-85 site in γb predicted to generate a potential CCCH motif or on the His-13 site in CP exposed to the surface of the virions abolish the zinc-binding activity and their interaction. Immunogold-labeling assays show that γb binds to the surface of rod-shaped BSMV virions in a Zn2+-dependent manner, which enhances the RNA binding activity of CP and facilitates virion assembly and stability, suggesting that the Zn2+-dependent physical association of γb with the virion is crucial for BSMV morphogenesis. Intriguingly, the tightly binding of diverse CRPs to their rod-shaped virions is a general feature employed by the members in the families Virgaviridae (excluding the genus Tobamovirus) and Benyviridae. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) become a main public health concern, and is characterized by lipid accumulation in the hepatocytes. We found that overexpression of lncRNA MEG3 significantly reduced the expression of FOXO1, ACC1, and FAS, and subsequently decreased the lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. Moreover, inhibition of lncRNA MEG3 could increase the lipid accumulation and the mRNA and protein levels of FOXO1, ACC1, and FAS. Further study showed that lncRNA MEG3 regulates the lipogenesis process by inhibiting the entry of FOXO1 into the nucleus translocation. Our study demonstrated that lncRNA MEG3 regulates de novo lipogenesis by decreasing the expression and nucleus translocation of FOXO1 in HepG2 cells, suggesting that lncRNA MEG3 could be a promising therapeutic target in lipid metabolic disorders., (© 2024. Clostridium perfringens alpha toxin (CPA), which causes yellow lamb disease in sheep and gas gangrene and food poisoning in humans, is produced by all types of C. perfringens and is the major virulence determinant of C. perfringens type A. CPA induces hemolysis in many species, including humans, murines, sheep and rabbits, through its enzymatic activity, which dissolves the cell membrane. Recent studies have shown that some pore-forming toxins cause hemolysis, which is achieved by the activation of purinergic receptors (P2). However, the relationship between P2 receptors and non-pore-forming toxin hemolysis has not been investigated. In the present study, we examined the function of P2 receptors in CPA toxin hemolysis and found that CPA-induced hemolysis was dependent on P2 receptor activation, and this was also true for Staphylococcus aureus β-Hemolysin, another non-pore-forming toxin. Furthermore, we use selective P2 receptor antagonists to demonstrate that P2X1 and P2X7 play important roles in the hemolysis of human and murine erythrocytes. In addition, we found that redox metabolism was mainly involved in CPA-induced hemolysis using metabolomic analysis. We further demonstrate that CPA activates P2 receptors and then activates NADPH oxidase through the PI3K/Akt and MEK1/ERK1 pathways, followed by the production of active oxygen to induce hemolysis. These findings contribute to our understanding of the pathological effects of CPA, clarify the relationship between P2 activation and non-pore-forming toxin-induced hemolysis, and provide new insights into CPA-induced hemolysis.

Image resolution is paramount when contouring complex anatomy, as in head and neck planning. It is notable that when diagnostic radiologists perform a computed tomography scan of the neck, they always use a small field of view because it gives the best image resolution. When planning for radiation treatment, however, it is also necessary to have a large field of view to provide a comprehensive external contour that allows for radiation dose calculation. Despite the potential of nanozymes combined with sensor arrays for discriminating multiple pesticides simultaneously, they have few practical pesticide sensing uses due to the limited performance of existing nanozymes and the complexity of their preparation. Here, agricultural waste is utilized for the facile synthesis of high-performance biochar nanozymes and the fabrication of biochar nanozyme sensor arrays. The production of autogenous N-doped biochars with abundant surface functional groups and good peroxidase-like activities is achieved with different types of algae. High-performance biochar nanozyme sensor arrays can discriminate pesticides in a concentration range from 1 to 500 μM and in real samples from soil, lake water, seawater, apples, cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes and cabbages. Furthermore, pesticides can be quantified down to 1 μM. To address electromagnetic interference (EMI) pollution in modern society, the development of ultrathin, high-performance, and highly stable EMI shielding materials is highly desired. Liquid metal (LM) based conductive materials have received enormous amounts of attention. However, the processing approach of LM/polymer composites represents great challenges due to the high surface tension and cohesive energy of LMs. In this study, we develop a universal one-step fabrication strategy to directly process composites containing LMs and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and successfully fabricate the ultrathin, flexible, and stable EMI shielding films with an average specific EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE) value of 429 dB/mm and small thickness of only 70 μm in the wide frequency range of 8.2-18 GHz. In addition, the resulting films also exhibit excellent mechanical performance and flexibility, which endow the film with the ability to withstand repeated folding, bending, and folding into complex shapes without producing cracks or fractures. Besides, the resulting films display excellent thermal conductivity with a λ of 4.90 W/(m K) and an α of 3.17 mm 2 /s. Thus, the presented approach shows great potential in fabricating advanced materials for EMI shielding applications.

To explore immune cell infiltration and PDL1 expression in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), we performed immunohistochemical staining on paraffin-embedded tumor tissues from 34 patients diagnosed with PCNSL. CD8 and CD163 positive cells were manually counted, and PDL1 expression was quantified by the H-score scoring method in the tumor center and around the tumor. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze the prognostic value of the TME. We found obvious infiltration of CD8 + CTLs and CD163 + TAMs in the TME of PCNSL patients. And PDL1 was expressed in the tumor center as well as around the tumor. Survival analysis showed that high CD8 + CTLs levels and high intratumoral PDL1 expression were significantly correlated with longer OS. High CD8 + CTLs and CD163 + TAMs levels were associated with longer PFS.

Trisiloxane ethoxylates (TSEOn) are widely used as agricultural surfactants due to their significant synergism with the active ingredients of pesticides, generally, including three typical end groups which are hydroxyl (TSEOn-H), methoxy (TSEOn-CH 3 ), and acetoxy (TSEOn-COCH 3 ), respectively. However, the potential ecotoxicological and endocrine-disrupting risks of TSEOn congeners have recently attracted ever-growing concern. Above all, there is limited research on the concentration levels of TSEOn in agroecosystems. This study, simultaneous analysis of 39 TSEOn oligomers in citrus orchard soils in China was implemented by the modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The method detection limits (MDLs) and the method quantification limits (MQLs) for TSEOn were 0.003-0.07 μg/kg and 0.01-0.20 μg/kg, respectively. The recoveries for TSEOn oligomers in soils ranged from 81 % ∼ 106 % with related standard deviations (RSDs) < 7 %. This newly developed UPLC-MS/MS method with high sensitivity and stability allows us to successfully trace the occurrence of TSEOn congeners in the citrus orchard soils from 3 provinces and 1 municipality in China. The detected concentrations of TSEOn-H oligomers in the sampled soils ranged from 0.02 to 0.288 μg/kg (dry weight). The congener profiles of TSEOn-H were dominated by TSEOn-H (n = 6- 8) in the soils. Additionally, the total concentrations of TSEOn-H congeners (ΣTSEOn-H) in the soils were in the range of 0.03 to 1.49 μg/kg. A comparison of ΣTSEOn-H distribution among the different citrus orchard soils indicated a higher level of ΣTSEOn-H in the soil samples collected from Zhejiang Province. Notably, TSEOn-CH 3 or TSEOn-COCH 3 oligomers were not detected in the tested soils. Increasing evidence showed that imidacloprid affects plants' abiotic or biotic stress tolerance. However, the effects of imidacloprid on the quality of fruits remain elusive. This work aimed to study the effects of imidacloprid applied at different growth stages on the edible quality and phenolic profile of strawberry fruit in the field experiment. For the first time, lower fruit quality was observed in the mature strawberry fruits after imidacloprid treatment at the fruit-bearing completion stage (five days after pollination). Compared to the control group, the mature strawberry fruit wights and the SCC/TA ratio declined about 18.2-30.0 % and 10.3-16.8 %, respectively. However, those attributes did not occur in the mature strawberry fruits by imidacloprid treatment at the fruit maturation stage (30 days after pollination). Among the 30 phenolic compounds, nine presented significant up-regulation or down-regulation after imidacloprid application at two different growth stages, suggesting that the application period played an essential role in evaluating the effects of imidacloprid on the quality of fruits. A significant effect on fruit quality was presented at the strawberry early growth stage treated by imidacloprid. Background: Large-scale outbreaks of scrub typhus combined with its emergence in new areas as a vector-borne rickettsiosis highlight the ongoing neglect of this disease. This study aims to explore the long-term changes and regional leading factors of scrub typhus in China, with the goal of providing valuable insights for disease prevention and control., Methods: This study utilized a Bayesian space-time hierarchical model (BSTHM) to examine the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of scrub typhus and analyze the relationship between environmental factors and scrub typhus in southern and northern China from 2006 to 2018. Additionally, a GeoDetector model was employed to assess the predominant influences of geographical and socioeconomic factors in both regions., Results: Scrub typhus exhibits a seasonal pattern, typically occurring during the summer and autumn months (June to November), with a peak in October. Geographically, the high-risk regions, or hot spots, are concentrated in the south, while the low-risk regions, or cold spots, are located in the north. Moreover, the distribution of scrub typhus is influenced by environment and socio-economic factors. In the north and south, the dominant factors are the monthly normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and temperature. An increase in NDVI per interquartile range (IQR) leads to a 7.580% decrease in scrub typhus risk in northern China, and a 19.180% increase in the southern. Similarly, of 1 IQR increase in temperature reduces the risk of scrub typhus by 10.720% in the north but increases it by 15.800% in the south. In terms of geographical and socio-economic factors, illiteracy rate and altitude are the key determinants in the respective areas, with q-values of 0.844 and 0.882., Conclusions: These results indicated that appropriate climate, environment, and social conditions would increase the risk of scrub typhus. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of hepatitis E vaccination strategies in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients., Methods: Based on the societal perspective, the cost-effectiveness of three hepatitis E vaccination strategies-vaccination without screening, screening-based vaccination, and no vaccination-among CHB patients was evaluated using a decision tree-Markov model, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated. Values for treatment costs and health utilities were estimated from a prior investigation on disease burden, and values for transition probabilities and vaccination-related costs were obtained from previous studies and government agencies. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken for assessing model uncertainties., Results: It was estimated that CHB patients superinfected with hepatitis E virus (HEV) incurred significantly longer disease course, higher economic burden, and more health loss compared to those with HEV infection alone (all p < 0.05). The ICERs of vaccination without screening and screening-based vaccination compared to no vaccination were 41,843.01 yuan/quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and 29,147.32 yuan/QALY, respectively, both lower than China's per-capita gross domestic product (GDP) in 2018. The screening-based vaccination reduced the cost and gained more QALYs than vaccination without screening. One-way sensitivity analyses revealed that vaccine price, vaccine protection rate, and decay rate of vaccine protection had the greatest impact on the cost-effectiveness analysis. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses confirmed the base-case results, and if the willingness-to-pay value reached per-capita GDP, the probability that screening-based vaccination would be cost-effective was approaching 100%., Conclusions: The disease burden in CHB patients superinfected with HEV is relatively heavy in China, and the screening-based hepatitis E vaccination strategy for CHB patients is the most cost-effective option., (© 2023 Japan Society of Hepatology.)

Eighteen surface sediment samples collected from the Rongcheng offshore area of China in 2021 were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations, sources, and pollution status. The Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and total organic carbon (TOC) distributions were similar. In contrast, the distributions of Pb and Hg were irregular, and high concentrations appeared in two or several areas. Occasional adverse effects were observed from pollution caused by Cu, Pb, and As, and none of the heavy metal concentrations exceeded the probable effect level (PEL). The Pearson's correlation coefficient, geoaccumulation index, and principal component analysis were used to distinguish the sources and assess the pollution risk of heavy metals. Hypertensive patients with snoring and elevated plasma homocysteine levels are common. When these factors are combined, the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) is high. Herein, we developed and validated an easy-to-use nomogram to predict high-risk CHD in snoring hypertensive patients with elevated plasma homocysteine.Snoring patients (n = 1,962) with hyperhomocysteinemia and hypertension were divided into training (n = 1,373, 70%) and validation (n = 589, 30%) sets. We extracted CHD predictors using multivariate Cox regression analysis, then constructed a nomogram model. Internal validation using 1,000 bootstrap resampling was performed to assess the consistency and discrimination of the predictive model using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration plots.We constructed a nomogram model with the extracted predictors, including age, waist-height ratio, smoking, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The AUCs of the training and validation cohorts at 80 months were 0.735 (95% CI: 0.678-0.792) and 0.646 (95% CI: 0.547-0.746), respectively. The consistency between the observed CHD survival and the probability of CHD survival in the training and validation sets was acceptable based on the calibration plots. A total of more than 151 points in the nomogram can be used in the identification of high-risk patients for CHD among snoring hypertensive patients with elevated plasma homocysteine.We developed a CHD risk prediction model for snoring hypertension patients with hyperhomocysteinemia. Our findings provide a useful clinical tool for the rapid identification of high-risk CHD at an early stage.

Background: The increasing number of pertussis cases worldwide over the past two decades has challenged healthcare workers, and the role of environmental factors and climate change cannot be ignored. The incidence of pertussis has increased dramatically in mainland China since 2015, developing into a serious public health problem. The association of meteorological factors on pertussis has attracted attention, but few studies have examined the impact of air pollutants on this respiratory disease., Methods: In this study, we analyzed the relationship between outdoor air pollution and the pertussis incidence. The study period was from January 2013 to December 2018, and monthly air pollutant data and the monthly incidence of patients in 31 provinces of China were collected. Distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) analysis was used to estimate the associations between six air pollutants and monthly pertussis incidence in China., Results: We found a correlation between elevated pertussis incidence and short-term high monthly CO 2 and O 3 exposure, with a 10 μg/m 3 increase in NO 2 and O 3 being significantly associated with increased pertussis incidence, with RR values of 1.78 (95% CI: 1.29-2.46) and 1.51 (95% CI: 1.16-1.97) at a lag of 0 months, respectively. Moreover, PM 2.5 and SO 2 also played key roles in the risk of pertussis surged. These associations remain significant after adjusting for long-term trend, seasonality and collinearity., Conclusions: Overall, these data reinforce the evidence of a link between incidence and climate identified in regional and local studies. These findings also further support the hypothesis that air pollution is responsible for the global resurgence of pertussis. Hidden ingredients in plant protection products (PPPs) threaten public health, food trade, and the environment. In this study, we developed a high-throughput screening method of 639 hidden ingredients in PPPs using GC-MS/MS in multiple reaction monitoring mode. Results showed that the qualitative criteria of retention time (t R ) shift and uncertainty of qualifier to quantifier ratio in the commercially available Shimadzu Smart Pesticides Database were set at < 0.17 min and < 30%, respectively, which could be used to tentatively identify compounds without standards. The limits of quantification were 0.01-0.05 mg/kg. A wide linear range of 10-1000 μg/L was observed with R 2 ≥ 0.975. Recoveries from three types of PPP formulations were 62.08%- 126.3%, with relative standard deviations < 15.7%. Finally, this method was applied to screen and quantify hidden ingredients in 91 plant protection products (PPPs) samples collected from online sales in China. Only one hidden ingredient, dimethomorph (1.6 g/kg), was detected in the polyoxin formulation (15% wettable powder). Autophagy plays an important role in plant antiviral defense. Several plant viruses are reported to encode viral suppressor of autophagy (VSA) to prevent autophagy for effective virus infection. However, whether and how other viruses, in particular DNA viruses, also encode VSAs to affect viral infection in plants is unknown. Here, we report that the C4 protein encoded by Cotton leaf curl Multan geminivirus (CLCuMuV) inhibits autophagy by binding to the autophagy negative regulator eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4A (eIF4A) to enhance the eIF4A-Autophagy-related protein 5 (ATG5) interaction. By contrast, the R54A or R54K mutation in C4 abolishes its capacity to interact with eIF4A, and neither C4R54A nor C4R54K can suppress autophagy. However, the R54 residue is not essential for C4 to interfere with transcriptional gene silencing or post-transcriptional gene silencing. Moreover, plants infected with mutated CLCuMuV-C4R54K develop less severe symptoms with decreased levels of viral DNA. These findings reveal a molecular mechanism underlying how the DNA virus CLCuMuV deploys a VSA to subdue host cellular antiviral autophagy defense and uphold viral infection in plants., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest statement. Organic agriculture is of great socioeconomic significance because it can promote the nutritional quality of horticultural crops and is environmentally friendly. However, owing to the lack of techniques for studying complex aroma-related chemical profiles, limited information is available on the influence of organic practices on the flavor quality of strawberries, one of the primary factors driving consumer preferences. Here, two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF-MS) and flavoromics analysis was employed to investigate the profiles and differences in the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of strawberries under organic (without imidacloprid) and conventional (with imidacloprid) agricultural practices. A total of 1164 VOCs, representing 23 chemical classes (e.g., aldehydes, terpenes, and furanone compounds), were detected, which is the highest number of VOCs that have ever been detected in strawberries. The sensory evaluation results indicated that there was a notable influence of imidacloprid (IMI) on the aroma of the strawberries. Principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis results suggested that the composition of volatile compounds significantly differed in the present study between the IMI-treated and non-IMI-treated groups. Furthermore, the flavor-related indicators of 25 key contributors to the differences between the two treatment groups suggested that VOC profiles can be considered an indicator for distinguishing between strawberries from different agricultural practices. Flavoromics can provide new insights into the quality of strawberries from different agricultural practices.

A kind of organosilicon intermediate was prepared using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hydroxyl silicone oil (HSO), and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA). The organosilicon modification of epoxy resin was realized by introducing a -Si-O- group into the side chain of epoxy resin by chemical grafting. The effects of organosilicon modification of epoxy resin on the mechanical properties systematically discuss its heat resistance and micromorphology. The results indicate that the curing shrinkage of the resin was decreased and the printing accuracy was improved. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the material are enhanced; the IS and elongation at break (EAB) are enhanced by 32.8 and 8.65%, respectively. The brittle fracture is changed to a ductile fracture, and the tensile strength (TS) of the material is decreased. The glass transition temperature (GTT) of the modified epoxy resin increased by 8.46 °C, and T 50% and T max increased by 1.9 and 6 °C, respectively, indicating that the heat resistance of the modified epoxy resin was improved., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. The dissolution of transition metal ions causes the notorious peeling of active substances and attenuates electrochemical capacity. Frustrated by the ceaseless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, Sisyphus of the Greek myth yearned for a treasure to be unearthed that could bolster his efforts. Inspirationally, by using ferricyanide ions (Fe(CN) 6 3- ) in an electrolyte as a driving force and taking advantage of the fast nucleation rate of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF), we successfully reversed the dissolution of Fe and Cu ions that typically occurs during cycling. The capacity retention increased from 5.7% to 99.4% at 0.5 A g -1 after 10,000 cycles, and extreme stability of 99.8% at 1 A g -1 after 40,000 cycles was achieved. Fe(CN) 6 3- enables atom-by-atom substitution during the electrochemical process, enhancing conductivity and reducing volume change. Moreover, we demonstrate that this approach is applicable to various aqueous batteries (i.e., NH 4 + , Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Al 3+ ).

Optical fiber sensors (OFSs) represent an efficient sensing solution in various structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. However, a well-defined methodology is still missing to quantify their damage detection performance, preventing their certification and full deployment in SHM. In a recent study, the authors proposed an experimental methodology to qualify distributed OFSs using the concept of probability of detection (POD). Nevertheless, POD curves require considerable testing, which is often not feasible. This study takes a step forward, presenting a model-assisted POD (MAPOD) approach for the first time applied to distributed OFSs (DOFSs). The new MAPOD framework applied to DOFSs is validated through previous experimental results, considering the mode I delamination monitoring of a double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen under quasi-static loading conditions. The results show how strain transfer, loading conditions, human factors, interrogator resolution, and noise can alter the damage detection capabilities of DOFSs. This MAPOD approach represents a tool to study the effects of varying environmental and operational conditions on SHM systems based on DOFSs and for the design optimization of the monitoring system.
