Common latex coatings suffer from poor water resistance, which often limits their practical application. This paper reports on the preparation of polyacrylate latexes using various approaches to tune the water resistance, wettability, and surface properties of their coating films. The mutual effects of fluorinated monomer copolymerization, emulsifier type (polymerizable and general), and intra- or interparticle covalent crosslinking (due to allyl methacrylate copolymerization and a keto-hydrazide reaction, respectively) were studied. The polyacrylate latexes were synthesized through a two-step semicontinuous emulsion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and methacrylic acid as the basic monomers. The fluorinated monomer was incorporated into the second-step polymer (at a content of 30 wt.% based on the second-step monomer feeds). The water resistance, wettability, and surface properties of the coating films were evaluated with focus on the water absorption, water whitening, water contact angle, and surface topography using atomic force microscopy. It was found that highly water-resistant and hydrophobic coatings that possessed a self-healing ability were prepared, provided that the polymerizable emulsifier and the fluorinated monomer were involved in the latex synthesis, along with the intra- and interparticle covalent crosslinking., Běžné latexové nátěry trpí špatnou odolností vůči vodě, což často omezuje jejich praktické použití. Latexy byly připraveny dvoustupňovou semikontinuální emulzní polymerací 2,2,2-trifluorethylmethakrylátu, methylmethakrylátu, butylakrylátu a kyseliny methakrylové jako bazických monomerů, kde byl fluorovaný monomer kopolymerován na polymer ve druhém kroku (v obsahu 30 % hmotn. vztaženo na monomery ve druhém kroku). Byla hodnocena odolnost proti vodě, smáčivost a povrchové vlastnosti nátěrových filmů se zaměřením na absorpci vody, zbělení vodou, kontaktní úhel s vodou a topografii povrchu pomocí mikroskopie atomárních sil. Bylo zjištěno, že byly připraveny vysoce voděodolné a hydrofobní povlaky, které mají samoopravnou schopnost, za předpokladu, že se polymerizovatelný emulgátor a fluorovaný monomer podílely na syntéze latexu spolu s intra- a mezičásticovým kovalentním zesítěním.

Controlled precipitation of struvite-K is of interest in the treatment of kidney stones, for phosphorous and potassium recovery from wastewaters, and in the chemistry of magnesium phosphate cements. The effect of citric acid in the growth of struvite-K from solution has been studied at room temperature and pH = 9 under different conditions of energy of mixing and concentrations of the reactants. The time-evolution of pH during the precipitation reaction evidenced that the citric acid increased induction time and decreased the apparent growth rates of crystals. Chemical speciation analysis, measurements of citrate concentration, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that crystallization is controlled by the formation of complexes with magnesium ions in solution and adsorption of citric acid at the growing surfaces. In analogy with Ca-carbonates and Ca-phosphates, the latter process impairs formation of nuclei of critical size. Crystal habit is dictated by supersaturation conditions and selective adsorption at crystal faces in reason of their residual charge density; consequently, alteration in the crystal shape is observed, and the average size of crystals and the amount of precipitate are reduced., Řízené srážení struvitu-K je zajímavé při léčbě ledvinových kamenů, pro získávání fosforu a draslíku z odpadních vod a v chemii hořečnatých fosfátových cementů. Podobně jako u uhličitanů vápenatých a fosforečnanů vápenatých tento druhý proces narušuje tvorbu zárodků kritické velikosti. Vzhled krystalu je dán podmínkami přesycení a selektivní adsorpcí na plochách krystalů z důvodu jejich zbytkové hustoty náboje; následně je pozorována změna tvaru krystalu a průměrná velikost krystalů a množství sraženiny jsou sníženy.

Flexible polyurethane foams (FPUF) are common plastic materials used in industry or consumer goods (heat and sound insulation, washing sponges, car seats). FPUF wastes are frequently taken to landfills and incineration, which causes environmental problems. The current method of physical recycling for rebound foams seems to be efficient, however, with limited usage in the structure of mattresses or construction insulations. Disadvantages of the current chemical recycling methods of FPUF consist of the slow reaction process, high energy consumption, and production of secondary waste by-products. This article deals with the special technique of the controlled depolymerisation of the studied FPUF. FPUF was depolymerised in an ambience of non-reactive liquid at a temperature of 130 degrees C, only giving liquid products. The depolymerisation process and the final product was characterised by titration methods, Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), and Gel Permeable Chromatography (GPC). The recycled polyol (product of depolymerisation) was tested in model polyurethane adhesive formulations and evaluated for shear tensile strength on spruce wood test pieces. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Byl depolymerizován v prostředí nereaktivní kapaliny při teplotě 130 °C, přičemž vznikly pouze kapalné produkty. Depolymerizační proces a konečný produkt byly charakterizovány titračními metodami, Fourierovou transformační infračervenou spektroskopií (FT-IR), plynovou chromatografií/hmotnostní spektrometrií (GC/MS) a gelovou permeační chromatografií (GPC). Recyklovaný polyol (produkt depolymerace) byl testován v modelových formulacích polyuretanového lepidla a hodnocen na pevnost v tahu na zkušebních kusech ze smrkového dřeva.

In the context of reducing the environmental impact of cement manufacturing, magnesium phosphate cements raise interest as alternative binders in construction, for immobilization of wastes, and recycling purposes. Their use in applications is somehow limited by short setting time, brittleness and low water resistance; this calls for the use of additives. Two polymer additives were designed adopting emulsion polymerization, an environmentally friendly solution to make available polymers as water-based latex dispersions. The composites containing 5 wt% of polymer, exhibited better elastic behaviour, with up to twice the toughness of the reference sample and of a sample produced with commercial styrene butadiene rubber latex. Moreover, the additives reduced the apparent porosity, promoted phosphate crystallization, modified the size and shape of crystals, and effectively retarded the reaction, extending working time. The acrylic emulsion developing keto-hydrazide self-crosslinking reaction imparted better properties to the composite, thanks to the synergistic effect with the MPC setting reaction. All rights reserved., V kontextu snižování dopadu výroby cementu na životní prostředí nabývají na významu hořečnato-fosfátové cementy (MPC) jako alternativní pojiva ve stavebnictví, pro imobilizaci odpadů a pro účely recyklace. Jejich použití v aplikacích je limitováno krátkou dobou tuhnutí, křehkostí a nízkou voděodolností, což vyžaduje použití přísad. Byly navrženy dvě latexové disperze na vodní bázi jako polymerní aditiva připravená pomocí emulzní polymerace, což je řešení šetrné k životnímu prostředí. Kompozity obsahující 5 % hmotn. polymeru vykazovaly lepší elastické chování s až dvojnásobnou houževnatostí než referenční vzorek a vzorek vyrobený z komerčního latexu styren-butadienového kaučuku. Navíc aditiva snižovala zdánlivou poréznost, podporovala krystalizaci fosfátů, upravovala velikost a tvar krystalů a účinně zpomalovala reakci, čímž prodlužovala pracovní dobu. Akrylátový latex využívající keto-hydrazidovou samosíťující reakci propůjčil kompozitu lepší vlastnosti díky synergickému efektu s reakcí vytvrzení MPC.

Epoxy resins are characterized by excellent properties such as chemical resistance, shape stability, hardness and heat resistance, but they present low flame resistance. In this work, the synthesized derivatives, namely hexacyclohexylamino-cyclotriphosphazene (HCACTP) and novel diaminotetracyclohexylamino-cyclotriphosphazene (DTCATP), were applied as curing agents for halogen-free flame retarding epoxy materials. The thermal properties and combustion behavior of the cured epoxy resins were investigated. The obtained results revealed that the application of both derivatives significantly increased flame resistance. The epoxy resins cured with HCACTP and DTCATP exhibited lower total heat release together with lower total smoke production compared to the epoxy materials based on conventional curing agents (dipropylenetriamine and ethylenediamine). Comparing both derivatives, the HCACTP-cured epoxy resin was found to provide a higher flame resistance. The designed novel class of epoxy materials may be used for the preparation of materials with improved flame resistance properties in terms of flame spreading and smoke inhibition., Epoxidové pryskyřice se vyznačují vynikajícími vlastnostmi, jako je chemická odolnost, tvarová stálost, tvrdost a tepelná odolnost, ale vykazují nízkou ohnivzdornost. V této práci byly syntetizovány deriváty, konkrétně hexacyklohexylamino-cyklotrifosfazen (HCACTP) a nový diaminotetracyklohexylamino-cyklotrifosfazen (DTCATP), které byly použity jako tvrdidla pro bezhalogenové samozhášecí epoxidové materiály. Byly zkoumány tepelné vlastnosti a chování při hoření vytvrzených epoxidových pryskyřic. Získané výsledky ukázaly, že aplikace obou derivátů výrazně zvýšila odolnost proti hoření. Epoxidové pryskyřice vytvrzené pomocí HCACTP a DTCATP vykazovaly nižší celkové uvolňování tepla spolu s nižší celkovou produkcí kouře ve srovnání s epoxidovými materiály na bázi konvenčních vytvrzovacích činidel (dipropylentriamin a ethylendiamin). Při porovnání obou derivátů bylo zjištěno, že HCACTP-vytvrzená epoxidová pryskyřice poskytuje vyšší ohnivzdornost. Navržená nová třída epoxidových materiálů může být použita pro přípravu materiálů se zlepšenými ohnivzdornými vlastnostmi z hlediska šíření plamene a inhibice kouře.
